People can pick up their fresh produce from Homefields every week on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday.
BY COURTNEY MENGEL
Located on a 23-acre organic farm at 150 Letort Road, Millersville, Homefields Care Farm is a nonprofit community-supported agriculture (CSA) program that provides employment and training for disabled individuals. Hundreds of people who have a disability or other barrier to traditional employment have engaged at Homefields, where they grow organically minded produce for community shareholders. The farm is currently home to six adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Homefields’ season runs for 24 weeks, from the last week of May to the beginning of November. People can purchase shares of the harvest, which can be customized depending on the individual’s needs. Payment plans are also available.
Throughout the season, Homefields also hosts events, such as its Talks in the Field program, annual Classic Golf Tournament, and Picnic in the Fields. The Talks in the Field program connects local experts to the community on a wide range of environmental and wellness topics, including landscape design, storm water management, foraging, yoga, and native plant gardening.
Homefields’ 25th annual Classic Golf Tournament will take place on Friday, Sept. 24, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crosslands Pass, Millersville. Readers can find more information about this event at www.homefields.org/golf.
The annual Picnic in the Fields event will occur on Sunday, Sept. 26, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the farm.
“This organization is a beating heart for people who cannot stand alone and need other opportunities in life and in work,” stated Allison G. Hawthorne, vice president of the board of directors. “That’s what motivated us to brand ourselves as a care farm and what motivates me to provide opportunities where opportunities don’t exist. I’m here to give a hand.”
Homefields is interested in connecting with certified B corporations to launch its Fund a Farmer project. Fund a Farmer sponsors part-time farm hands with job coaching and other support needs. Fund a Farmer sponsorships will last from March to December and can be shared, partial, paid in one payment, biannually, quarterly, or monthly. Those interested in learning more about Fund a Farmer can contact info@homefields.org or call 717872-2012.
