Schreiber Pediatric reimagines
annual Rubber Duckie Race
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development will hold the 2024 Rubber Duckie Race and Festival on Sunday, Sept. 8, at its facility, located at 625 Community Way, Lancaster. The rain-or-shine community event will take place from 2 to 5 p.m., and it will include a
variety of family-friendly activities in addition to a new tradition that will replace the Rubber Duckie Race in the Conestoga River.
This year, the festival will incorporate several races for the first time since it began 36 years ago, including the Duckie Dash at 3 p.m., the Duckie Dash relay at 3:30 p.m. and the Duckling Dash
at 2:30 p.m. The Duckie Dash will entail a 1-mile race that is open to runners 13 years old and above. Teams of four may sign up for the Duckie Dash relay, which will include a quarter-mile run that participants will complete wearing a duckie floatie. Children ages 2 to 5 and 6 to 12 may compete in the 100-meter Duckling Dash. Participants in each race will
receive refreshments at the end of the run and 10 festival tickets. Those who sign up for the Duckie Dash will receive one entry in a prize drawing, and prizes will be given to the team that places first in the relay race. Race winners will be announced at 4 p.m. All participants who sign up before Thursday, Aug. 1, will receive a commemorative T-shirt and an

According to www.extreme weatherwatch.com, the hottest day in Lancaster County’s recorded history was Aug. 7, 1918, when the temperature peaked at a staggering 107 degrees. This record remains unbroken, but June’s heat wave battered the county with temperatures higher than anything the area has experienced in recent years. Although the extreme weather has affected every part of the county, residents of rural townships may face different hazards than others who live in the suburbs, and certain populations are more vulnerable to severe heat.
On its website, www.noaa .gov, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration states that heat is one of the primary causes of weather-related deaths in the United States, causing more than 1,000 deaths every year. NOAA also lists newborns, pregnant women, elderly persons and individuals with chronic illnesses as groups that are more susceptible to serious health issues in hot conditions. Extreme heat events have been associated with birth outcomes such as low birth weight and congenital cataracts, and young children’s bodies are not able to

Bringing the islands to the Lancaster Liederkranz
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When Lancaster Liederkranz holds its annual Parrot Fest on Saturday, July 20, don’t expect a flock of birds. Instead, the event will feature “Margaritaville at the Liederkranz,” with food, beverages and live music providing an island vibe.
“Our first Parrot Fest was held in 2008, and one of the questions we got prior to the fest was a call from a lady looking for information on what kinds of parrots we were going to have and how many,” recalled Paul Stanavage, fest chairperson.
“So of course we told her we would have Parrothead fans, not parrots, but we would be throwing an island-themed party.”
“Parrotheads” is the term for Jimmy Buffett fans, people who love Buffett’s music and the island lifestyle.
Parrot Fest will run from 5 to 11 p.m. at the Lancaster Liederkranz,
722 S. Chiques Road, Manheim.
Tropical Sunz will perform from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., followed by headlining band Jimmy and the Parrots, which will play from 7 to 11 p.m.
“They are from the New Jersey area and were a Jimmy Buffett cover band when we met them at an Oktoberfest being held at a German restaurant in center city Philly called Ludwig’s,” Stanavage recalled, adding that the experience of seeing the band at an Oktoberfest event was unusual. Stanavage and his wife run a German Schuhplattler dance group called Alpenrose, and they were hired to dance at the Oktoberfest. Due to a scheduling conflict, no German bands were available, so the cover band stepped in.
“When we got there and saw there was a Buffett band playing, we were a tad surprised, to
adapt to heat as well as most adults. The NOAA encourages individuals to practice heat safety by limiting time spent doing outdoor activities, staying hydrated and double-checking their vehicles to make sure children and pets are never left unattended inside.
There are many ways all residents of Lancaster County can practice heat safety, but some areas pose a different threat than others during periods of excessive heat. Suburban neighborhoods in Landisville, Willow Street and Millersville contain more square footage of pavement and concrete than townships that are less developed. The NOAA warns drivers that paved roads are susceptible to
deterioration and buckling from excessive heat, and asphalt can become hot enough to burn pets’ paws after it is exposed to direct sunlight. Residents of the county’s rural communities such as Buck, Refton and Marticville may beat the heat in shady forests and cool creeks, but help is less accessible to those who are separated from their neighbors by several acres of land.
Local emergency service organizations encourage community members to help make the Southern End safe by checking in on elderly neighbors and people whose homes do not have air conditioning.
“If you’re outside and you’re thirsty in that kind of heat, it’s too late,”
said Andrew Gilger, Lancaster EMS’ performance improvement officer.
“The key to avoiding heat injuries is staying ahead of it. Drink lots of water and take breaks when you know you need it.”
Forecasts predict that
slightly cooler days will arrive in upcoming weeks, but experts urge the public to keep heat safety in mind and to remain on the lookout for advisories from local weather agencies and emergency service organizations this summer.
say the least,” Stanavage said. “But, they were really good and really entertaining. They played Buffett, and we did the German traditional stuff. We all had a great time.”
Stanavage stayed in touch with the band, and when he was looking for fundraiser ideas as then-president of the Liederkranz, he thought of Jimmy and the Parrots.
“They play a little trop-rock, Zac Brown, Bob Marley with plenty of Buffett sprinkled in,” Stanavage shared. “They tell us they love playing for us because from the first song they play ‘til the end of the night, our dance floor is packed with people dancing and having fun.”
The club’s first Parrot Fest drew more than 800 people, and after a few years, the crowd had swelled to 1,500. That was just a few too many people, Stanavage said, so orga nizers have capped Parrot Fest at 1,000 tickets.
A selection of German beers will be available on tap, along with a draft margarita wine and other beverages.
“The Lancaster Liederkranz offers a great venue just off 283 outside of Mount Joy along the scenic Chiques Creek,”
Stanavage said, noting that Parrot Fest promises to be a fun evening out.
“(There is) plenty of seating, a large dance floor, two great bands, food and drink.”
Stanavage encourages people to purchase tickets early for Parrot Fest. There
is a discount for tickets purchased before Sunday, July 14. All tickets must be purchased in advance and may be purchased by searching for “Parrot Fest” on www.eventbrite.com.
Along with live music, Parrot Fest will feature food, including hot dogs, hamburgers, “Cheeseburgers in Paradise,” pork barbecue sandwiches, jerk chicken, walking tacos, hand-cut french fries and vegan hot dogs and hamburgers. Food will be served from 5 to 9 p.m.

To us, the best means producing a truly authentic, premium product. We start with happy, healthy cows who live at our American Humane Certified™ dairy and focus on top-quality ingredients that result in superior taste you can savor. While you may be seeing more and more “frozen dairy desserts” on the shelf, we still offer REAL ice cream made with less air & higher milkfat for a creamy bite every time.
Try it for yourself and we think you’ll probably agree!
