Baseball coach will retire after decades of leading the Mountville Indians
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
After more than three decades, Bob Sauders of Landisville has announced that this season will be his last time serving as the coach of the Mountville Indians youth baseball team. Players, parents and members of the local baseball community are taking a moment to thank Sauders for his unwavering dedication to the program as he closes the chapter of a long career of teaching young athletes on the sandlot.

Although Sauders has made the decision to retire, he will continue to coach the Indians this summer as they compete in the playoffs to pursue one more championship with their fearless leader.
“I didn’t realize how much I would enjoy the coaching aspect of it.”
“Sometimes you just get the sense that it’s the right time,” Sauders said. “You don’t want to hang on too long. I’m sure I’ll miss it when I get out, but you want to
Last fall, Sauders made the decision to retire, having coached the Mountville Indians since 1988. Although he had always been fond of baseball and gained some experience coaching in the instructional baseball program beforehand, Sauders said he never planned to become a coach for the Indians. Sauders stepped up to the plate when his son, Rob, became old enough to join the team, which was looking for someone to put at

Lancaster County is widely known for its large population of Amish residents and other members of the Plain community. Horses and buggies are an iconic part of the area’s distinct character, and although the Amish are especially fond of their privacy, local residents and tourists are able to observe several customs that are unique to
the modest group. But there are many Amish traditions that few people outside the Plain community are familiar with, including the topic of Beth Oberholtzer’s new book, “Amish Gardens of Lancaster County.”
Oberholtzer’s latest work explores the time-honored Amish tradition of cultivating a kitchen garden, which is maintained by the women of the household to serve a variety of
One of the five human senses, hearing is something that can be easily taken for granted. But for those who can’t hear, there’s an element of appreciation that inspires creativity, ingenuity and a manifestation of the human spirit.
Through a wealth of services and resources, the Lancaster Center of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing (LCDHH), located at 2270 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, which is a subsidiary of

purposes. The gardens are used to feed large families with a diverse range of vegetables, fruits and herbs that serve as integral parts of family recipes, many of which have been passed down through generations. The kitchen gardens are also utilized as places for members of the household to plant flowers and foster different types of artistry and creativity.
“One of the pleasures of researching this book and talking to the gardeners was learning how the gardens are really portraits of the women who create and sustain them,” Oberholtzer said. “It is how they nourish their families, a way to connect with their children, and an expression of their own creativity.”
FRESH MEAT DEPARTMENT
Oberholtzer had the idea to write “Amish Gardens of Lancaster County” while she was visiting local Amish farms and conducting
research for her previous book, “Working Horses of Lancaster County.” Oberholtzer said she noticed that each Amish home included a large garden, and she began to learn about them from the wives of the horse owners she was interviewing. “I got an inkling of their responsibilities and joys in gardening and preserving food for their families,” Oberholtzer added. “Some information I gleaned was common across most gardens, while some was unique to a particular gardener.”
Oberholtzer will discuss “Amish Gardens of Lancaster County” on Thursday, July 25, at Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster. The free event will begin at 6:30 p.m., and no registration is required to attend.

and overseen by Keystone Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services (KDHHS) of Reading, helps individuals with hearing loss learn to listen, communicate better and generally lead fuller lives.
LCDHH client services manager and language specialist Karen Pfortsch, who has been deaf since birth, was interviewed for this article with the help of sign language interpreter Kandy Reyes, KDHHS’ president.
“Deaf individuals are happy being deaf,” said Pfortsch. “We can do everything except hear. We can drive; we can work.
American Sign Language is a beautiful language. What’s important to us is our eyes and being able to see.”
At LCDHH, individuals with hearing loss and their family members are directly and indirectly connected with services like sign language interpreters, sign language education, hearing aids, speech therapy, amplifiers, closed caption video phones, doorbell signalers, smoke and fire alarms, workshops, community activities and social events.
People who are deaf or
hard of hearing also employ lip reading, facial expressions and body language as ways to receive communications, but they are more informal and learned skills that are often less accurate than sign language.
“The goal is barrier-free services and community access,” said Pfortsch. “Our goal is to empower our clients with whatever services are needed. It’s like a onestop shop. When a person comes in here, they need to discuss their needs with us. Some might be looking for a job, and we’ll connect them with employment agencies. Some people might be struggling with reading. Some people have limited language skills. Some might need to know how to get their pensions. We’ll get them connected to the right people. There are a variety of things we’ll do to get them help, and sometimes we do advocacy.”
LCDHH serves about 300 clients on a regular basis. According to numbers from a recent census, approximately 80,000 Lancaster County residents have some sort of hearing loss.
“We are only scratching the surface,” said Pfortsch.
Xiao named to dean’s honor list
Tony Xiao of Mountville was named to the dean’s honor list for the spring semester at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Xiao is enrolled in the College of Engineering.
To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must complete a minimum of 12 graded degree credits in the semester. Each university school or college sets its own GPA requirements for students to be eligible to receive the distinction.

“Some people have a mindset about deaf people from what they’ve seen on TV. They label all deaf people as ignorant. We have to work to prove ourselves because it’s considered a disability. But deaf people don’t think they’re disabled.”
KDHHS employs a total of 10 individuals, two of whom work out of the LCDHH office. LCDHH is a nonprofit that receives funding from donations, grants and fees from its interpreter services.
“We are known in the
deaf and hard of hearing community,” said Pfortsch.
“Some organizations know us, and they connect their clients with us. They’ll work with us and collaborate with us. But some people don’t know the services are available. We’re here. People are welcome to call us.”

Baseball coach from
the helm. “I guess I wasn’t paying attention and they picked me,” Sauders joked. “I didn’t realize how much I would enjoy the coaching aspect of it.”
Despite coaching for multiple decades, Sauders said he’s still learning as he wraps up his final season with the Indians. Sauders’ coaching method focuses heavily on the strategy of baseball, and his practices have often incorporated simulations of different scenarios players could find themselves in out on the diamond. “I really want to
teach players the game of baseball, not just hitting, throwing and catching,” said Sauders. “I try to push them a bit in that regard and teach them to expect the unexpected.”
Sauders credited the duration of his career to the abundant support of parents, players and other members of the youth baseball program in Mountville, as well as the encouragement from his wife, Deb. “I’ve been very fortunate. You couldn’t coach this long without that kind of support,” Sauders said.

During the month of May, customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores were invited to round up their grocery purchases to the nearest dollar to support each organization.
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, in partnership with the Giant Company, announced it will award grants to local community organizations for tree plantings across Pennsylvania, and funds will support Pick Up Pennsylva-

Planet Bee Foundation drives awareness for pollinators and the importance of bees as a pathway to STEM, conservation and innovations in agriculture. Funding raised by the Giant Company will support local beekeepers, research programs and school and community programs.
