Residents Wish For A Merry Christmas ... In July By Dayna M. Reidenouer
“SNOWTREK” VBS
Although temperatures are more like 93 degrees instead of 39, a group of Woodcrest Villa residents is thinking Christmas. The seventh annual Christmas in July school supplies drive will be held from Tuesday, July 24, through Tuesday, July 31. A kickoff celebration will be held at 7 p.m. on July 24 in Gamber Auditorium, which is located within the VIVA Centre on Woodcrest Villa’s campus, 2001 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. “We’ll have a little music, a little laughter,” co-founder Barbara Smith said of the celebration. “That’s the best part: eating homemade Christmas cookies!” The program will feature musical performances as well as group singing of carols, and resident Dee Harnish will
read a Pennsylvania Dutch translation of Clement Moore’s poem “The Night Before Christmas.” Refreshments including the cookies that Barbara mentioned - will be provided. There will also be an opportunity for attendees to order school supplies for donation to the program. Volunteer Dennis Good explained that the group has put an efficiency measure in place to improve the shopping process. As in previous years, group members will offer school supplies for residents to buy and donate. This service enables folks who are unable to shop offcampus to participate in the supplies drive. This year, however, the group will take orders for items, which Dennis will order in bulk and ship directly to the Families in Transition program. See Christmas In July pg 4

Marketing and special events coordinator Kim Craven likes to say that at the National Watch and Clock Museum, 514 Poplar St., Columbia, patrons don’t have to just visit time, they can take time home with them. That is precisely what people of all ages will have the chance to do this summer at the museum’s Makeand-Take workshops, which allow participants to design and create a clock to take home. The Make-and-Take workshops are offered from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p . m . on Mondays through Aug. 27 at the museum. A small fee is charged. Individuals may drop in and do not need to register, but large groups should make reservations in advance by calling 717-684-8261, ext. 2. Although the workshops are popular with children and families, museum admissions and gift shop manager Abby Krouse
said that the activity has also been a hit with adults who come in to make the clocks together. “People get so creative,” remarked Krouse. “I love looking at all of the things they come up with.” Participants begin by selecting a wooden base for their clock from an assortment of shapes ranging from circles and squares to dinosaurs, football helmets, and more. Next up is painting where the sky is the limit with color options and even the chance to add glitter - followed by drying. The next step is adding the battery-operated movement piece and securing it with nuts and washers before setting it to the correct time, and voila! Depending on how involved a person may decide to make the design of the clock, the project can take anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour. Preschool-age children can complete the task with some assistance from a

The process to select the next superintendent included listening to input from students, administrators, faculty, and staff members, as well as community members. An application period yielded 19 applicants. Seven prescreened, wellqualified candidates subsequently participated in personal interviews, followed by input and deliberation amongst the board
members. Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 facilitated the search process. Formal approval of Bromirski’s contract was anticipated to take place at the July 10 meeting of the school board. “The board looks forward to working with district leadership, as well as Hempfield’s dynamic staff (members) to ensure a seamless transition for district educational programming and operations, the statement read.

CASA of Lancaster County trains volunteers to be qualified, compassionate advocates to fight for and protect a child’s right to be safe, to be treated with dignity and respect, and to learn and grow in the security of a loving family. CASA volunteers meet regularly with the child and interview people in the child’s life, including social workers, attorneys, teachers, doctors, and mental health professionals. Families in Transition began more than 20 years ago in the School District of Lancaster and has since spread to incorporate 17 Lancaster County school districts. The program aims to remove barriers to education for homeless children by helping to provide school supplies, clothing, transportation to school, and other basic needs. Christmas in July accepts donations of cash in addition to school supplies; the funds have been used to purchase school uniforms and other necessities, including laundry detergent. In 2017, more than 10,000 items were donated, and financial contributions amounted to almost $4,000. Barbara noted that $500 is earmarked for the Hempfield School District, as that is where the retirement community is located. She related a conversation with her contact at the district who requested some of those funds be used for laundry detergent. The contact explained that the school nurses all have access to washers and dryers, and when children come to school in unclean clothing, the nurses are able to provide the students with a fresh set of clothing to wear while they launder the clothing. “That’s a really touching story,” Barbara remarked.
Accounts like those are why Barbara, Dennis, and others participate in Christmas in July. “It’s fun to do something with the younger generation,” remarked program co-founder Pat Smith, who is not related to Barbara. “ We have so many former school teachers, nurses, and principals who live here,” Barbara explained. “They’re so touched by this program (because they remember their own students). They like selecting things themselves if they’re mobile.” Items for the project may be placed in decorated boxes in several areas on campus. Members of the public may drop off items at the VIVA Centre, and cash contributions may be made at the center’s front desk. The school supplies requested are crayons, No. 2 pencils, colored pencils, pencil sharpeners, pink erasers, glue sticks, safety scissors, spiral notebooks, three-ring binders, three-ring notebook paper, composition books, and backpacks. Personal care items will also be accepted, including toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, socks, hairbrushes, combs, and hair picks. For more information about Christmas in July, readers may call Barbara at 717-391-3627.

empowerment of one another’s diversity, and a plan for creating a community that is sustainable. There is no cost to attend the Lunch and Learn, but registration is requested at https://ywcalancaster.org/lunch -and-learn-july. Racial Justice Institute Part II will take place from Wednesday to Friday, July 18 to 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Lancaster Theological Seminary, 555 W. James St., Lancaster. The program will follow Racial Justice Institute Part I, which took place in June. The Institute will be led by cultural bridges to justice, a national consortium of trainers. Jona Olsson and Achebe Powell are two of the facilitators who have delivered the Institute to the Lancaster community for more than 20 years. Due to the intensity and the pace of the institutes, interested participants are highly encouraged to have had prior conversations and experiences regarding oppression and racism. YWCA Lancaster and the Lancaster Theological Seminary have developed this program to equip participants with a newfound understanding of the life experiences of people of color and white people. Participants will be introduced to an anti-racist and multicultural analysis model and will leave the institute with a tangible plan of action for themselves and their change team. There is a cost to attend. To register, readers may visit https://ywcalancaster.org/rji.

Participants can enter photographs for a weekly chance to win outdoor items, such as butterfly nets, basketballs, jump ropes, sidewalk chalk, and more. The recreation commission continues to operate the Summer Playground Programs through July to welcome residents to cool off in the wading pools located in the city of Lancaster. Group Plans Data Reveal The Central Penn Business Group on Health (CPBGH) will host a Data Reveal on Wednesday, July 18, from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Lancaster Chamber, 115 E. King St., Lancaster. For the past two years, the CPBGH has focused on creating a data cohort for health care data in the region. The goal was to give its members and the broader community an independent data set outlining health care costs and relevant metrics for the region that could be used to drive change. With data now available on more than 80,000 covered lives, CPBGH will host its first data reveal with a baseline analysis of its cohort.
CPBGH will share the following categories of information with attendees: the demographics of the population represented, chronic disease prevalence, cost of care and employee cost share, as well as information on costs by provider. CPBGH will also share its path forward for access to its Community Lens view of its data and plans to work with other health care coalitions to enhance benchmarking opportunities. The public is invited to attend. There is a registration fee, and CPBGH members will receive a discount. Registration will include breakfast. To register, readers may visit www.cp bgh.org.

Hempfield High School’s communication technology students were recently awarded and recognized for their work regionally and nationally. At the regional level, the MidAtlantic National Association of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) awarded two Emmys: one for Hempfield High School’s Hempfield Happenings videos and another to senior Bailey Titter for best in arts and entertainment. Next, schools within 500 miles of Cincinnati were invited to contribute videos to the Golden Lion
Awards High School Film Festival. More than 300 videos from 76 schools across 13 states submitted entries. Seven Hempfield films were accepted, two of which were screened at Memorial Hall in downtown Cincinnati on April 29. Hempfield students and groups were then presented with awards: Jack Harrison - honorable mention in News; Julia Campbell - third place in News; and the Disabilities Partnership Television (DPTV) crew, consisting of Jack Harrison, Bailey Titter, Kayleigh Gallagher, and Joel
Pletcher - second place in Alternative for a DPTV promotion video. Students and groups also received national awards. In February, the Student Television Network’s (STN) Broadcast Excellence Award was given to Hempfield High School for Hempfield Happenings - Best in Monthly Student News - Northeast Region. STN supports, promotes, and recognizes excellence in scholastic broadcast journalism, creative video, filmmaking, and media convergence.
In April, STN awarded the following Hempfield High School students: Tusha Pham, a junior honorable mention in Sports News and second place in School News; Kayleigh Gallagher, a senior - third place in Editing at STN convention; and Lauren Dague, a junior - first place in School News. Additionally, according to Matthew Binder, communications technology instructor, Hempfield graduating seniors earned scholarships to account for approximately 40 percent of their total tuition for the following year.
