Summer concerts planned in East Petersburg

Ina move to expand its live music offerings to the public, the East Petersburg Events Committee will host two concerts this summer at East Petersburg Community Park, 6051 Pine St., East Petersburg.

On Saturday, July 15, the committee will host Sweet Sounds of Summer, a new concert offered in partnership with the Candy Factory in Lancaster. The idea for the event was inspired by several successful iterations of the East Pete Blues Fest at the community park. The show will primarily feature folk music as well as bands that will perform rock ’n’ roll songs. The event will be held from 3 to 7 p.m., and food will be able to be purchase from a variety of food trucks, including Krazy Kones, Belly’s BBQ, M’n’M Making the Bakin and Scoop Ó Dough. The East Petersburg and Landisville Lions Clubs will sell hamburgers and hot dogs.

Multiple vendors will operate stands during Sweet Sounds of

Summer, including Gems of Love and Revolution Lancaster. When selecting vendors, the events committee prioritized those that sell handmade goods and who are locally based.

Sweet Sounds of Summer will mark the first event the East Petersburg Events Committee has organized in partnership with the Candy Factory. “We’re really looking forward to this new collaboration and bringing new people into our community,” said Kristin Troop, chair of the events committee.

The second summer concert, Music in the Park, will be held on Saturday, Aug. 5, from noon to 7 p.m. Music in the Park is another new event that will be offered this year, although the planning committee has previously organized an annual concert in the first week of August. Since the August concert hasn’t been held in several years, the events committee partnered with Gochnauer’s Home Appliance Center to host the Uptown Band of Philadelphia as the

Taking a swing against poverty

More than 25 years ago, HOPE International, a Christ-centered global nonprofit that equips men and women to break the cycle of poverty for themselves and their community, gave out its first micro loan in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine. Just recently, Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, recounted the story of a Ukrainian blueberry farmer named Anastasiya. “Anastasiya decided not to let the war cause her to leave, which is a big deal,” said Rutt. “She had gotten a loan from HOPE prewar for seedlings for her blueberry farm,

and in 2022, she was able to secure a second loan for irrigation to increase her crop.” Last year, Anastasiya and her family harvested their first blueberry crop. HOPE has given out a total of $1.2 million in Ukraine since the war began.

HOPE recently surpassed $1.6 billion in micro loans with the goal of restoring dignity in families’ lives. To raise funds to reach such goals, HOPE holds a yearly golf tournament. This year’s fundraiser will take place in three locations:

Turf Valley Resort, Ellicott City, Md., at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14; Iron Valley Golf Club, Lebanon, on Friday, Sept. 15, at 7 a.m. and 1 p.m.;

headlining act. Corsair Blue Jazz Orchestra will open the show. Music in the Park will include several food vendors, such as Cabalar Meat Company, Blazin’ J’s and Simply Greek. The event will also feature a beer garden; in a

roped-off section, concert attendees who are age 21 years or older may purchase craft beer from Mad Chef Craft Brewing and Levengood of Lancaster.

“One of the reasons we built the amphitheater was to host big bands

and draw people to our park,” Troop said. “We’re hoping that the community is as excited as the events committee is to host this event right in our backyard.”

A piece of history restored

In the fall of 2022, LancasterHistory staff member Randy Harris noticed that multiple gravestones at

St. Mary’s Cemetery in Lancaster were in need of attention. The three gravestones were leaning heavily and were at risk of falling over completely without the proper attention.

Although the historic cemetery is home to many graves, these particular gravestones preserve an important piece of Lancaster’s history, as they belong to Lydia Hamilton Smith and her two sons, William and Isaac. Harris contacted the African American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania and Charles F. Snyder Funeral Homes to share his concerns about the gravesites. The organizations partnered with LancasterHistory to devise a plan to restore the burial site. Andre Dominguez, a LancasterHistory volunteer and local historian, created a conservation report for the site and worked with Mosko

Rutt emphasized that HOPE focuses on all domains, not just the material but also personal, social, and spiritual. “It’s exciting to see what God can do through what He puts in the hands of the clients we serve around the world,” he said, adding that as the war in Ukraine continues to rage, HOPE continues to offer loans in that country and pray with clients. “God is working,” said Rutt. “We see more and more people coming to Christ through interaction with our teams and the churches even through the destruction and disillusionment of the war,” he said, adding that many people who had no interest in spiritual discussions prior to the war want to pray with the HOPE team. “I believe it will have an impact on the generations to come,” he said. Rutt pointed out that before the war, 5.5% of Ukrainians lived below the poverty line. That number is now at 24%, and it is estimated that it could take a decade for the Ukrainian economy to recover.

Sarah Smith, content and media writer for HOPE International, said that the HOPE

approach offers a sustainable way to alleviate poverty and positively impact a community. “When someone takes out a loan or is saving money and starts a business, they start employing other people in the community,” she noted.

Rutt added that sustainability is the reason HOPE has always avoided simply giving handouts to those in need. “We believe we can get to a longer-lasting solution through allowing people to use the gifts that God put in our hands. We are interested in restoring dignity, not creating dependency.” To continue to make that happen, Rutt has set a goal of raising $1.5 million toward HOPE’s total budget of $36 million through the golf tournament. “It all happens through partnerships and sponsorships,” he said. “Contact us and help drive out poverty.”

Dominguez and Mosko used two 12-foot-tall cranes to lift the headstones, each of which weighed over 800 pounds. After the stones were moved aside, the cranes were used to pick up the bases, allowing the Dominguez and Mosko to dig down and level the ground with stone and marble chips. The base and headstones were then moved back to their proper place and sealed to prevent water from causing any further destabilization. Dominguez then cleaned all three of the grave markers.

Harris and Dominguez installed a commemorative marker at the gravesite following the restoration. The marker offers information on the Smith family and the significance of its role in history. Smith was a close friend of Thaddeus Stevens, and she worked as his housekeeper. The two were heavily involved in the Underground Railroad and actively worked f or the liberation of slaves during the 19th century. “There have been questions about their relationship and lots of misinformation throughout the years, including varied accounts of where (Smith) is buried,” Harris said. “This is another phase of continuing to find accurate information on two pivotal members of American histo-

LancasterHistory is currently in the design phase for a large project to create the Thaddeus Stevens and Lydia Smith Center for History and Democracy in downtown Lancaster. The building will be located on the corner of South Queen Street and Vine Street, and it will be part of the Lancaster County Convention Center. In the new installation, visitors will have a chance to learn about Lancaster’s role in the Civil War and the lives of Stevens and Smith, as well as others who were involved with abolitionist efforts. “These people were considered fringe characters with no grounding in reality. They pushed the envelope until they brought more people to their side,” Harris said. “ We want to convey the importance of these people’s lives and what it really meant to be an abolitionist and combat the horrors of slavery.”

LancasterHistory hopes to begin construction on the project by the spring of 2025. For more information, visit www.lancasterhistory.org.

Christmas in July Bazaar will feature food and fun

Head out to Mary Mother of the Church (MMOC) in Mount Joy, and you can pick up a bargain while also supporting the community.

The church, 625 Union School Road, will hold its third annual Christmas in July Bazaar on Saturday, July 15. The event will run from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

“It’s just a fun time to come in, wander around, pick up some inexpensive items and maybe win something, too,” said deacon Joe Cingle.

He encourages attendees to participate in the church’s

“Elves Fill the Shelves” initiative by bringing food items to be donated to local pantries and/or school supplies to be donated to local schools.

The Basket Bonanza will feature more than 150 themed baskets. “We have Steelers items, Christmas items, a Pepperidge Farm basket, a USA basket and lots more,” Cingle stated. Tickets will also be sold for giveaways of higher-end items, including a handmade quilt, a Nordic exercise machine and a

refurbished rocker. More than a dozen vendors and crafters will be on-site as well, selling items including succulents, jewelry, magnets, ornaments and prints. A “Made by MMOC” section will feature items created by parishoners and will include prayer blankets, drawstring bags, baby bibs, doll clothing and dish cloths. A kids’ area will be set up outside, with face

painting, a ring toss game, a scavenger hunt and more.

A chicken barbecue will be held as part of the bazaar as well, and although the deadline to purchase tickets has passed, a limited number of dinners will be available for purchase on the day of the event. Breakfast foods, including sausage biscuit sandwiches, bagels, Danishes and muffins, will be available from 7:30 to 11 a.m., and lunch will be served from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., featuring hot

dogs, hamburgers, cheeseburgers and baked goods.

The bazaar raises funds for the church but also offers a way for the congregation to connect with the community, Cingle said, adding, “Everyone is welcome, and we hope people will come to spend an hour or two shopping, eating, browsing, talking to people and just enjoying what we have to offer.”

Artists sought to create mosaic

The City of Lancaster is seeking a qualified artist or artist team for the commission of a sidewalk mosaic in a hardscaped courtyard to be located on the southeast side of the Plum Street roundabout.

The City of Lancaster Department of Public Works plans to install a permanent roundabout at the intersection of North Plum and East New streets and Park Avenue. A temporary roundabout is currently installed in its place. Construction will

begin Wednesday, Aug. 30, and will be completed by June 2024.

The roundabout will be accompanied by a variety of amenities, including vegetated curbing, street trees and other foliage, a hardscaped courtyard, street furniture, and public art in the form of a sidewalk mosaic. The city is seeking an artist to complete the 40-square-foot mosaic to be installed in the concrete of the courtyard.

The city is committed to creating opportunities for

local artists, be it through commissioned works or by facilitating learning opportunities for skill development. Artists are preferred to reside in or near Lancaster city, although non-local artists are also welcome to apply, particularly those who have experience working with emerging artists. Nonlocal artists will be asked to provide hands-on experience to one local artist throughout the artistic process.

Selection will take place using a two-phase process. A

selection committee will first review applications submitted through the request for qualification. Up to three finalists will be selected by the committee. Finalists will then be invited to complete phase two of the selection process, which will include the final design proposal. Final design proposals will be reviewed by the Public Art Advisory Board.

The deadline to submit proposals is Monday, July 17. For more details, go to www.cityoflancasterpa.gov.
