Hempfield

WA new approach to practice

hether you’re an athlete or a performer, the concept of practice seems to be a straightforward process with little room for variation. Basketball players convene to run drills as a team, and they are expected to work on their jump shots at home; orchestra members rehearse a piece of music as a group, and every instrumentalist must become familiar with the material beforehand. But some educators, including Hempfield School District’s secondary orchestra director, Nile Wilson, believe it’s not about how often you practice - it’s the way you practice.

As a requirement for the program Wilson is in at Auburn University to receive her doctorate in instrumental music education, she completed a qualitative study to examine how string musicians in high school learned a new piece of music. A few of Wilson’s goals

were to determine how students of varying achievement levels grasped the new material, how they measured their progress and what strategies they used to practice. Wilson worked with orchestra directors from three high schools and one youth orchestra to select 14 participants between ninth and 12th grades, and she interviewed each student about their process of learning a solo piece from the first time they read it to the actual performance. Wilson then divided the participants into three groups by achievement level: typical, proficient and elite performers.

“The biggest surprise was seeing how many students spent most of their time looking at the tiny details of the music, waiting until the last second to put everything back together,” Wilson said. “I’m guilty of it too, but it makes it hard to see the big picture.”

Wilson discovered the elite performers think of their music

as a whole piece early in the practice process, and she said it changed the way she rehearses with her own students. “I started to incorporate bigger sections early on and having different expectations in the beginning or middle stages of preparation,” Wilson added. Wilson first became interested in exploring the rehearsal process during the coronavirus pandemic, due to her orchestra’s inability to practice together while in-person gatherings were suspended. Wilson recalled her own experience as a student, which often involved the frustration of not knowing how to work through the assigned material. “Teachers told me I needed to practice for a certain amount of time, but not how to practice effectively,” Wilson said. “Many students don’t practice regularly because they’re overwhelmed. These are new ways of practice, and I think it’s important for teachers

to be very deliberate in teaching students how to rehearse.”

Wilson will present her research at the National Association for

Music Education’s (NAfME) Biennial Music Research and Teacher Education Conference in Atlanta, Ga., this September.

Catch the world premiere of a youth musical, “When We Climb Trees,” at the Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. The show will be performed at 2 and 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 21.

“When We Climb Trees” tells the story of a tight-knit group of friends who struggle with the

conflict between sharing real-life adventures and succumbing to the draw of gaming devices and screentime.

“This show is really about finding balance between time to play, pretend, be a kid and be with friends with the ever-present allure of screentime and gaming,” said Steven Courtney, who wrote the show. “I find it interesting to observe the youthful cast as they ‘pretend’

Rugby football is not quite like any other sport. Originating in England in the 19th century, rugby has become increasingly popular in the United States in recent years, but many Americans are still unfamiliar with the team sport. This excludes Bella Vogel of Washington Boro, a recent graduate of Cornerstone Homeschool Co-op, which operates out of Grace Baptist Church on Marietta Avenue. Vogel has an unrelenting passion for rugby. At first glance, rugby appears similar to American football;

both sports involve teams of players clashing as they attempt to carry an egg-shaped ball to the opponent’s goal post. Both sports are descendants of games commonly played in medieval Europe, but rugby is known for its intensity and matches that can turn a rugby pitch into a battlefield.

“I like how aggressive and manon-man it is,” Vogel said. “When you’re on a team, it’s like a family; you’re out on the field fighting for each other. The camaraderie is different than other sports.”

Vogel discovered her passion for team sports when she began playing soccer at the age of 5.

Cruisin’ for Cats brings cars, bikes and felines together

Cats won’t be the only source of purring at the Columbia Animal Shelter on Saturday, July 27. Expect to hear the hum of engines as well when the shelter hosts its annual Cruisin’ for Cats Car & Bike Show. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the shelter, 265 S. 10th St., Columbia.

“This is a wonderful event for all ages,” said Tammy L. Jalbert, executive director of the shelter. “There will be awesome cars, bikes, live entertainment by Tate Lehman & The Blue Chilis. We will have hamburgers, hot dogs, pulled pork and desserts for sale. And everybody has a chance to cast their vote and pick a winner in the car and bike category.”

New this year, in addition to the top 20 vote getters, the top three cars and the top three bikes will each receive a cash prize.

This is the sixth year the shelter has held the car show. While cats and cars might seem like an unusual pairing, it makes sense considering the history of the Columbia Animal Shelter, Jalbert said. “Harold and Judy McKonly founded the Kleen-Rite Car Wash over 60 years ago. Judy had a passion for animals and her lifelong dream was to build an animal shelter, so when she passed, their family created a foundation in their honor,” she explained. “It made perfect sense when we opened (the shelter) back in 2019 to have a car and bike show, and it felt like the perfect way to support their love for all things cars, bikes and animals in one event.”

People who attend the event will have the opportunity to win gift baskets and other giveaways, and all proceeds will be used to provide animal care in the shelter, including low-cost wellness clinic services, low-cost spay/neuter clin -

ics and low-cost dental services.

“It is definitely one of our major fundraising events of the year and one of my favorites,” Jalbert stated.

The shelter will be open for tours during the car and bike show, and people will be able to meet animals up for adoption.

“Come out and support a really great cause, see some awesome animals available for adoption, look at some cool cars that may just be older than you, and enjoy a day of family fun,” Jalbert said.

There is a discount to preregister a car or bike up until the day of the event. On-site registration will also be available. To register, search for “Cruisin for Cats Car & Bike Show” at www.eventbrite .com. There is no charge for spectators to attend. Rugby player

After competing on a boys’ soccer team for several years, Vogel sought a game that matched her athletic drive, and she found rugby to be a perfect fit. In the last seven years, Vogel has played on local teams via Penn Legacy and the Knightmares rugby club, which practices in the Hempfield area.”Vogel has also played on the national team The Rugby Advantage. Last December, Vogel competed as a member of the United States’ U17 rugby team in the global tournament in New Zealand. At the end of July, she will fly to the United Kingdom as a current player on the United States’ U18 team to face off against England, Wales and Scotland.

Community Foundation plans summer events

The Lancaster County Community Foundation, together with its partners, has announced Summer for Lancaster, an interactive experience celebrating the Lancaster County of today and inviting residents to imagine their shared future for tomorrow. Partners, including the City of Lancaster, Steinman Institute for Civic Engagement, and ATOMIC, have joined with the foundation with the goal of amplifying classic Lancaster city events and delivering a fresh, collaborative summer celebration for Lancaster County.

St., Lancaster. All artists are welcome to sign up, but poets will have first consideration. The event is free of charge.

Salsa Night will take place on Friday, July 26, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Binns Park. The event will feature Jasmin Pantoja, Mambojaz Dance Company, and DJ Poli. During a pop-up barbershop on Sunday, July 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ewell Plaza, The Franchise team will provide free haircuts.

In addition to the sport’s intensity, Vogel said she appreciates the values of rugby and applies what she has learned from it in other areas of her life. “You have to be respectful in rugby. Only team captains can talk to referees, and you can’t yell at them or disrespect other players,” said Vogel. Vogel and her family operate the Petal Pot Market outside of their Washington Boro home to raise funds for rugby-related expenses. Last spring, a small homeschool co-op in the Southern End asked Vogel to teach students about rugby; Vogel visited the homeschoolers once every other week to explain basic rugby skills and the rules of the game, sharing her own experience as a player and offering resources to kids who became interested in pursuing the sport further. “It was really fun,” Vogel said. “Some of them were definitely hooked, and it was exciting to see.”

Vogel will attend Life University in Georgia this fall to study exercise science and to compete on its Division I women’s rugby team, and her ultimate goal is to compete in the Olympics someday.

to bring this ‘play’ to life through their hard work yet willing spirits. Collectively, there are so many elements of teamwork, collaboration and planning to produce this playful, upbeat show with a rather serious undertone. More and more studies are showing the addictive power of devices.”

Courtney, who is the producer, songwriter and playwright of the show through Sun Hill Productions, worked in partnership with Kami Deppen of Big Dream Players, who is directing the show and served as costumer and set designer. The pair held auditions earlier this year for local youths to record the musical’s soundtrack.

“The recording of the

soundtrack demo was super fun, and it went as good as we could have hoped,” Courtney recalled. “We used the demo versions of the songs to share with the cast. After the cast selection process, we provided the soundtrack for actors to rehearse with prior to our official rehearsals. The instrumental parts of the soundtrack will be used in the live show, and the cast will sing live vocals for the performance.”

The cast of “When We Climb Trees” is primarily youths ages 10 to 16 from Lancaster and York counties.

This is the first youth musical Courtney, a singer-songwriter, has written, but he knows it won’t be his last.

“I am presently developing a new musical themed around my song ‘Steven the Pirate,’” he shared. “I’m having a blast exploring the options for the storyline. There are a few other ideas in the vault as well. I do think I’ll stay in the ‘youth musical’ lane for moving forward.”

He hopes audiences will enjoy “When We Climb Trees,” noting that it will

Make It With Wool Contest announced

All

Pennsylvania contestants

The 2024 Pennsylvania Make It With Wool Contest will take place on Saturday, Sept. 28, in the PA Preferred Banquet Hall at the Farm Show Complex, 2300 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg. Youths and adults who sew, knit, or crochet garments with wool or other animal fibers may participate. The categories will be preteens, for those ages 8 to 12; juniors, ages 13 to 16; seniors, ages 17 to 24; adults, age 25 and older; and made for others, for which the model and contestant may be any age. Ages are as of Jan. 1.

Expert judges will handle the garments and meet with the contestants. Judging will be based on the following criteria: appropriate to contestant’s lifestyle, fit and overall appearance, coordination of fabric or yarn with garment style and design, contestant’s presentation, construction quality, creativity in design and use of wool, and conveys/promotes the beauty, comfort, and versatility of wool. All fabrics or yarns used in the body of the garment must be 60% or more animal fiber. Interfacings, linings, and trims do not need to be wool.

The Pennsylvania Sheep and Wool Growers Association and other donors will provide the funding for prizes for the winners in

each category. The winners in the junior and senior categories will be eligible to compete at the National Make It With Wool Contest in Scottsdale, Ariz., in January 2025. The adult winner will submit his or her ensemble, along with a video of the contestant wearing the outfit, for judging at the national level, and one winner will be selected to attend the national contest.

The goals of the contest are to promote the beauty and versatility of wool fabrics and yarns; to encourage personal creativity in sewing, knitting, crocheting, spinning, and weaving with wool fabrics and yarns; to recognize creative skills; to help participants develop life skills, including being responsible for oneself, being a good sport, and accepting judges’ decisions; and learning about and appreciating diversity.

There is a registration fee, plus a testing fee per fabric or yarn used. Registrations are due no later than Tuesday, Sept. 3. All who register will receive a piece of wool yardage. To request the registration form and other information, contact Linda Siegel, state director, at 717-274-1197 or linda@ lebaweb.com.

To learn more about the contest, visit www.makeit withwool.com.
