The coolest kid on the block

Threeyears ago, Bernie Dufrene of Landisville was sitting on the couch and watching “Wheel of Fortune” with his 9-yearold son, Bennett. As Bernie was idly scrolling through Facebook Marketplace on his phone, he saw a listing for an ice chest that was mounted on electric wheels. Bernie jokingly made a comment about how much Bennett would love to own such a contraption, and his son darted out of the room without explanation. Thirty minutes later, Bennett returned with a two-page business plan to sell frozen desserts with the motorized cooler, and Mr. Ice Cream Kid was born.

Bernie wasn’t serious about buying the cooler when he made the remark, but he could hardly say no after Bennett returned with a plan that included prices, inventory, a schedule of work hours and a name for the business. “He put a lot of effort into it, which caught my attention,” Bernie said.

Since this was during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Bennett was faced with a few challenges as he started his business. Everyone was confined to their homes due to safety regulations, and public events were unable to be held. Bennett announced on his neighborhood’s Facebook page which days he would be selling ice cream, and his

ultimate goal is to own his own ice cream parlor, and he has his sights set on Penn State University to study business. Bennett was drawn to Penn State due to its offering a course on ice cream, which details the process of making the treat. The school also has its own creamery.

In the beginning of July, Bennett and Bernie traveled to New York City to visit the Museum of Ice Cream and several ice cream parlors. As they sampled different flavors and studied each business’s unique characteristics, Bennett took notes on things he may want to incorporate into Mr. Ice Cream Kid.

Three years later, Bennett is still slinging soft serve throughout the county. Now 12 years old, Bennett will attend Landisville Middle School in the fall, although he’s already thinking ahead to college and the future of his business. His

Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will offer a workshop on Friday, July 28, from 1 to 4 p.m. The class will be hosted by Emily Smucker-Beidler, a resident of Centerville and an art teacher at Landisville Primary Center. Smucker-Beidler will explain how to create art pieces in the early American fraktur style, as well as delve into the history of the art form. When Swiss-German immigrants first came to Pennsylvania, they didn’t bring much; often the settlers only had a few items, such as birth certificates and family Bibles. Although they didn’t have any physical mementos from their homeland, they remembered it fondly and regularly created what became known as fraktur art pieces.

HHS cheer squad posts summer camp

Hempfield High School (HHS) will hold its summer cheerleading camp on Tuesday, Aug. 1, through Thursday, Aug. 3, at LA All Stars, 2979 Old Tree Drive, Suite C, Lancaster. camp, participants will be separated by age to focus on the appropriate activities. The younger cheerers will learn basic cheerleading techniques and simple motions, while the older kids will learn chants and the HHS fight song. Many current members of the HHS cheer squad assist with the camp to prepare youngsters who are interested in competing once they reach high school. In the fall, HHS holds a youth night, where young cheerleaders are invited to perform with the squad during a football game.

squad often work with Girls on the Run to participate in its practices and to cheer on girls who are running their first 5K race. In the past, HHS cheerleaders have volunteered to perform at assisted living facility Juniper Village at Mount Joy. This year, the cheer squad is raising money to donate to the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition, which will use the funds to give care packages for those undergoing treatment and to support

breast cancer survivors.

“As a member of the squad, you’re not only learning how to be a leader. You learn how to communicate effectively with others as well as organizational and team skills,” Vogel said. “We like to not only cheer for games but for the community too.”

The HHS cheer squad will hold an alumni game on Friday, Sept. 22, at the high school stadium. For a set fee, alumni will be able to attend the game, cheer with the squad in the third quarter and

“The camp is also just to spread interest in cheerleading,” said Kayla Vogel, head coach of the program. “We show the kids things they can look forward to, and it also helps to build relationships between cheerers.”

The summer camp also assists the HHS cheer program by raising money to buy items for the upcoming season, such as mats, new poms and gifts for graduating seniors. The funds also help the cheer squad to pay for camps and competitions that require traveling costs. At the end of July, members of the cheer squad will attend the US National Cheerleaders Association camp at Shippensburg University, where they will learn new chants, cheers and band dances.

over $2,300 for the Make-AWish Foundation during Lancaster County’s ExtraGive event. In the past, he’s made donations to the local Power Packs program, which provides weekend meals for students and their families. Bennett also supports organizations that are dedicated to the protection of elephants.

“I love what I’m doing, but I had no idea that I would be where I am today,” Bennett said. “I want to expand my business and continue to help organizations that do good things right here in Lancaster.”

settlers between 1740 and 1840. It is one of the oldest forms of American folk art, it draws inspiration from illustrated manuscripts in medieval Europe. Fraktur art often depicts three core symbols from Europe: birds, hearts and tulips. However, the settlers began to incorporate aspects of their new lives in America into the art.

During the workshop, Smucker-Beidler will offer a presentation on birds that were depicted through fraktur art, many of which were native to Pennsylvania and are now extinct. Participants will compare old art pieces and analyze which parts of the environment the settlers were integrating through the images. Participants will then be able to choose from three templates of fraktur drawings, which they will trace onto Bristol board and redefine with ink pens. After the template has been traced,

participants will complete the piece with their materials of choice. Workshop attendees are invited to bring their own paints or colored pencils, but materials will also be available to purchase during the class. At the end of the workshop, each artist will be able to take home his or her finished fraktur art piece.

“Fraktur art is a great portal to understanding so many things,” Smucker-Beidler said. “These were normal, everyday people that at the end of the day just wanted to make something beautiful.” Often, fraktur artists would not even sign their names on the finished piece. Many fraktur artists were schoolteachers who gave out the artwork as a reward to students.

Kiwanis presents donation

Division 16 of Pennsylvania Kiwanis recently presented a check to Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic to support its work with children with cleft lip and other craniofacial conditions. The clinic provides all the care needed, regardless of the family’s ability to pay.

The money donated was earned through a fundraiser at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre. Kiwanis Clubs in the division sold tickets to the play “Sister Act” and also provided themed baskets for a silent auction.

Sacred Heart School alumna Kathy Alton will return to the school as its new principal.

Alton taught first grade in Manheim Central School District after her college graduation. She earned her master’s degree in education from Millersville University. Church sets children’s musical

Children and youths from Habecker Mennonite Church, 451 Habecker Church Road, Lancaster, will present a short musical in English called “We Like Sheep” on Sunday, July 23, from 3 to 4 p.m.

All are welcome. The musical is a child’s reflection on what it means to follow Jesus as the Good Shepherd. A freewill offering will be received to support the church’s children and youth ministry.

After attending college to study fine art, Smucker-Beidler was sought out by people requesting fraktur art pieces, due to the fact that few artists still create it. “I’ve fallen in love with the history of it,” Smucker-Beidler said. “It speaks to people’s basic need to make something beautiful.”
