A decorative sign displayed in the Willow Street home where Nathanael Groff lives with his parents, Tim and Jill, reads “Not lucky but blessed.” Since third grade, Nathanael has carried the nickname “Lucky,” but after surviving stage IV colorectal cancer, Nathanael understands just how blessed he truly is. Nathanael graduated from Lampeter-Strasburg High School in 2002 and served in the Navy from 2004 to 2008. After moving back to Willow Street, he worked in auto sales. In the early part of 2017, however, he began losing weight rapidly and experienced debilitating stomach pains. Finally, on June 15, 2017, Nathanael went to the emergency room. Things moved rapidly from there.

Along with the colorectal cancer diagnosis, Nathanael learned that the cancer had spread to his liver. A coloscopy bag was placed on June 19, and a month later, an abscess the size of a tennis ball was removed. Nathanael began chemotherapy in July, which continued into September. Surgery in October removed seven tumors from his liver. November saw the start of radiation therapy five days a week. Chemotherapy, radiation, and constant pain continued through January. On March 20, 2018, a rectal tumor was removed, and he began a chemotherapy regimen that will conclude in September. Currently, he is considered cancerfree, but he will receive PET and MRI scans every three months for the foreseeable future. Due to his illness, the Groffs - which include Nathanael’s younger sister,

Thanks to a grant, Lancaster Farmland Trust has incorporated water quality improvement into its farmland preservation efforts. The three-year grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation will enable the trust to focus on the combination of on-farm conservation practices with the permanent preservation of farmland. Linking these efforts is intended to ensure maximum long-term impact on water quality and allow Lancaster County to continue to be the “garden spot” of the region, said the trust’s executive director, Karen Martynick. “We believe (that) a big part of the See Farmland Preservation pg 3

Farmland Preservation from pg 1 solution to Lancaster County reaching its required Chesapeake Bay reductions and improving local water quality includes protecting our farmland and finding farmers the resources to increase their conservation practices, she commented. Lancaster Farmland Trust currently has more than 40 farmers on the waiting list for preservation. To identify the strategic farms for preservation and water quality improvement, these farms will be prioritized according to impairment of the local watershed, proximity to surface water, conservation practices already in place, and opportunities for improvement. All farms currently preserved by Lancaster Farmland Trust are enrolled in the Smart Farms program, and many are already engaged in conservation practices on their own. Because Lancaster Farmland Trust annually monitors each preserved farm, the trust’s staff members are able to track the effectiveness of conservation practices and maximize the financial investment made on each farm. Laura Brenner, communications coordinator for the trust, noted that conservation efforts utilized in Lancaster County

include streambank fencing to keep livestock out of streams and reduce farm runoff and erosion into streams, physical improvements to barns with spouting to channel rainwater into designated areas, concrete barnyards, and curbs to keep nutrients in place. Additionally, larger manure storage pits allow farmers to apply manure when it can be used by their crops, instead of when the pit is full and needs to be emptied. Lancaster Farmland Trust is an active participant in water quality efforts within Lancaster County, as well as throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The trust believes this unique approach of combining land preservation with stewardship is easily replicated in other communities throughout the Chesapeake Bay region. Through the grant period, Lancaster Farmland Trust will document the practices and findings to share with other land trusts. According to www.lancaster farmlandtrust.org, the trust works in partnership with landowners to preserve their farms and way of life for future generations - ensuring that farms will be in agricultural use forever, eliminating the threat of development, and protecting the rich, valuable soils - by

placing a conservation easement on their property. A conservation easement is a legally enforceable land preservation agreement between a landowner and the trust restricting real estate development, commercial and industrial uses, and certain other activities on a property that are mutually agreed upon by the trust and the property owner. Each easement is customized to the particular needs and future plans of each individual farm family. Mount Joy resident Dave Laughman founded Veteran Service Canines three and a half years ago as a way to connect honorably discharged veterans with service-related disabilities with their own service dog - free of charge. Those disabilities may include anything from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to traumatic brain injuries (TBI) or physical needs. “Service animals are amazing tools, said Laughman, who served in the United States Marine Corps for 12 years and on four deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. “There are a lot of veterans, including myself, who have suffered from PTSD. It’s something that’s been going on for generations. Readjusting to civilian life can be challenging at best, with unique hurdles to overcome, and Laughman said that service dogs help in numerous ways as veterans learn to establish a new normal in their lives. “Having a dog that is there to serve you 24/7 is huge, said Laughman, noting that the loyalty of a dog can be healing. Laughman also said that while many combat veterans may tend to feel paranoid about their surroundings - particularly in large crowds - service dogs can be trained to help ease some of that tension. For instance, the canines are taught to “Cover Your 6, which means they will guard the area in the six o’clock position, or to the rear, of their handler’s viewpoint and warn the handler when someone is approaching. When it comes to anxiety disorders, Laughman said that service dogs are able to break the handler’s concentration and provide a distraction. Veteran Service Canines has a training facility in York where veterans who apply and are accepted into the program then

A motorcycle ride on Aug. 11 will benefit the work of Veteran Service Canines, a veteran-founded, volunteer-run nonprofit organization that connects veterans who have service-related disabilities with their own service dog. The leadership team includes (from left) Dave Chobanoff, founder and president Dave Laughman, Sandy Reynolds, Chad Reynolds, Mike Bunch, and (not pictured) Maggi Bradley. go to meet and train their canine. Each dog receives basic training beforehand, but Laughman said from there the veteran works with a professional handler to train the dog according to whatever his or her personal needs may be. According to Laughman, an added bonus to this setup is that it provides the participating veterans with a welcomed sense of community. “You miss a lot of the camaraderie you had in the military when you get out, Laughman reflected. “By combining guys in the same setting who are at different levels, they realize they’re not alone or singled out with whatever they’re going through. The nonprofit organization works closely with the Lebanon and Coatesville VA medical centers and has connected 35 veterans with service dogs since it began. Each recipient has been a veteran from the central Pennsylvania area, but Laughman said he receives inquiries from all over the country. On Saturday, Aug. 11, the community is invited to the third annual Veteran Service Canine

During the training period, Herold receives updates concerning Woody, which she passes along to employees. One of the privileges sponsors appreciate is the honor of helping to choose a moniker for their designated pup. “We had a company contest to name him,” said Herold, who passed along the three suggestions that received the most votes to UDS. “(Because UDS staff members) don’t know what disabilities the person he is matched with will have, they consider names for how easily they can be pronounced, so his name will work with anyone who is assigned to him,” Herold said, adding that she was glad “Woody” was chosen because it reflects the company name. The Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America raised $1.3 million during its recent 24th Anniversary Ride. Funds raised directly benefit Victory Junction, a camp dedicated to providing life-changing camping experiences for children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses. The ride’s donation will support maintenance programs, building projects and camperships. For the first time since 2011, former NASCAR driver and TV racing analyst Kyle Petty brought his annual motorcycle ride back to the East Coast. On May 5, Petty embarked on 1,200-mile route, leading 225 participants from Portland, Maine, to Greensboro, N.C. Traveling through nine states in seven days, the ride included various stops and sights on its themed “Americana Tour.” Local stops included the Eden Resort in Lancaster and Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction. The ride finished with a finale celebration at Victory Junction in North Carolina. Victory Junction has served as the ride’s primary beneficiary since its establishment by Petty and his family in 2004 in honor of his late

up to 50 commands, but many dogs are reaching that goal ahead of schedule. On June 8, Woody, accompanied by UDS staff accountant Mary Langton, visited Woody’s sponsors when the corporation held a company picnic at its facility. Langton said that Woody will spend a total of 18 months working with a designated inmate. “Woody will come back to us for (his) final six months of training to refine the skills he will need to (work with) the client he is chosen (to serve),” explained Langton. Langton is pleased with Woody’s progress so far. “He is very smart, and he seems to bond quickly,” she said. As Woody lolled in the grass and employee sponsors rubbed his stomach, Langton noted, “He is not afraid of crowds.” Herold met Woody for the first time when UDS held a sponsor meet-and-greet event just before Woody left for Moshannon. “This is the first

dog sponsorship program, they were intrigued. “We said, ‘Wow, this is something we want to do,’” she shared. “It’s a win-win.” Herold explained that the employee sponsors were happy to know they are helping the inmate who is training the dog because that person receives the opportunity to become certified as a trainer and gain competence in an area. “When he comes out (of prison, the inmate) has training to (work with) service dogs. It gives him a niche skill,” said Herold. Of course, Herold is most excited about the chance Woody has to positively affect the life of a person with a disability. “He is going to be a lifeline,” said Herold. “(Woody) will affect not just the person, but their whole family, and he can give someone their life back. That gives me chills.” Herold is looking forward to the road ahead as Woody grows and learns the skills he will need to be a service dog. “Our sponsorship is for two years, and at the end we get to go to his graduation,” said Herold. “What really touches me is that it is a long

Telling others about why the FoodStock Music Festival raises funds to support area organizations that are working toward eliminating hunger is easy for Tom Hayden. As one of FoodStock’s three founders, Hayden said that he became passionate about fighting hunger 26 years ago, when the postal service held its first Stamp Out Hunger food drive. As a postal service worker, Hayden had the chance to pick up thousands of donations and deliver 12,000 pounds of food to the Ephrata Food Bank. “ We overwhelmed our local food bank with donations. This was in May, and I said, ‘This ought to last you through the year,’ and the guy said, ‘Actually, this won’t even last us past July,’” recalled Hayden. “That’s when it hit me how big the need was.” “This is a problem that flies

under the radar. Hunger has a certain stigma to it,” said Hayden, noting that although it is a widespread issue, people oftentimes do not want to admit to struggling with it. Hardworking people often still face the choice of deciding between heat for their homes or food for their families, and Hayden believes that is something everyone can pitch in to help change. Hayden, Bobby D. Jones, and Todd Fuginetti formed FoodStock, a nonprofit organization, in 2011 as a way to combine their shared passion for music and helping others. Every summer, the organization hosts the FoodStock Music Festival as a way to raise funds for area organizations working to end hunger. This year’s event will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, in the Barn and Barrel Courtyard at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, 2775

Catholic Writers Conference Set The Catholic Writers Guild (CWG) will host Catholic Writers Conference Live (CWCL) on Tuesday, July 31, to Thursday, Aug. 2, at the Lancaster Convention Center, Lancaster, in conjunction with the Catholic Marketing Network (CMN) Tradeshow. The CWCL, cele-

brating its 10th anniversary, will provide writers, artists, editors, and illustrators opportunities for networking; workshops on writing, publishing, and marketing; pitch sessions; critique sessions; and more. Attendees will have access to the CMN Tradeshow floor,

www.facebook.com/foodstock musicfestivalpa.

FoodStock always donates to the food bank in the town where the event is hosted, so the Manheim Central Food Pantry will benefit again this year. “We just want people to come out and enjoy the spirit of the event,” said Hayden. “There’s a lot of people out there in need. One circumstance - one illness, the loss of a spouse - can change it all. I think a lot of people take that for granted,” he reflected. For more details, readers may visit www.foodstockpa.org or

To purchase tickets to the FoodStock Music Festival, interested individuals may visit www.foodstockpa.org. Admission for children age 12 and under is free. Proceeds from the 2018 event will primarily benefit Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), as well as Water Street Mission and other local food banks and pantries. “ We have a main beneficiary every year, but then we break it down and choose other organizations, too,” Hayden explained.

Lebanon Road, Manheim. The music festival will include performances by Steel Radiance, Corsair Blue Jazz Orchestra, Benjamin Vo Blues Band, solo guitarist Rob Reese, and Hydroponic Philharmonic. Headlining the event at 5 p.m. will be Vinyl Groov, a Harrisburg-based band that plays everything from Motown to modern hits. “They’re an event in and of themselves,” Hayden said. “We try to keep it fresh, so we have a really eclectic mix of performers this year.” Food and beverages will be available to purchase, and a variety of arts and craft vendors from throughout central Pennsylvania will have items for attendees to browse and buy. Giveaways and silent and Chinese auctions are planned as well, with items including autographed CDs, Beatles memorabilia, a black five-piece Pearl Roadshow complete drum set, original artwork, a wedding photography package, tickets to area attractions and restaurants, and more.

Enriching Support for Them... Peace of Mind for You

La Academia: The Partnership Charter School recently dedicated its main entrance garden. The entire project was completed with a grant from the Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation’s Lowe’s Toolbox for Education Program. Ken Hammel, a member of the La Academia board of directors, was the project manager. During the development of the project, the planting bed and lawn edging were eliminated, freeing up money for plants and supplies. Advisers selected plants that were appropriate for the site and readily available from the project’s suppliers. Volunteers mulched and planted the new garden. Numerous faculty members and students from La Academia and student volunteers from Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology (TSCT) took part. The school received assistance from representatives of various companies and from Michael Gardner, masonry instructor at TSCT. A company will modify two downspouts and install two rain barrels at the end of the summer. For more information about La Academia, readers may visit www.lapcs.org, www.facebook .com/LaAcademiaThePartner shipCharterSchool or www .twitter.com/LaAcademiaPCS.

Project manager Ken Hammel (center) thanked Greg Tomlinson (far left), assistant sales manager at Tomlinson Bomberger; Adam Byler (second from left), landscape designer at RGS Associates; Maxine Walton (second from right) from Lowe’s; and Stephanie Rudy, Garden Center manager at Lowe’s on Rohrerstown Road, for their assistance. Michael Gardner (not pictured), masonry instructor at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, also assisted.

Ken Hammel, garden project manager and La Academia board of directors members, spoke during the dedication of the school’s new main entrance garden.
