The 2018 Summer Music Series at Long’s Park, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, will continue with a concert featuring Afro-Cuban All Stars on Sunday, Aug. 5. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the park’s amphitheater. Admission and parking are free. For details, visit www.longspark.org.
The 77th annual Salunga Community Picnic will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 8, at the Hempfield Fire Department Pavilion in Salunga Park, located next to the fire station, 19 W. Main St., Landisville. The event will take place rain or shine. Festivities will begin at 4:30 p.m. with a variety of games, and a penny scramble will be held at 5:30 p.m. for children age 12 and under. Everyone will be invited to sit down for an evening meal at 6 p.m. Attendees should bring their own dinners and place settings; the picnic committee will provide chips, ice cream, and beverages. A peanut scramble and a traditional cake walk will take place following the meal, and drawings for door prizes and themed baskets will be held. There is no cost to attend the picnic, but donations will be accepted to cover the costs associated with producing the event. The picnic committee would be especially appreciative of
new volunteers to help with next year’s picnic. “We have a meeting, and you get stuff to do on your own time,” said committee member Karen Haldeman, explaining what is involved. “The more volunteers we have, the less each person has to do,” added committee member Stacey Cooper. She noted that a sign-up sheet for volunteers will be available at the upcoming picnic. Folks who would like to help with this year’s picnic may show up and ask to be put to work. Haldeman and Cooper would like to see the picnic continue, as they feel it benefits the community. “You can meet your neighbors,” Haldeman suggested. “It’s like a reunion. It brings people back together again,” Cooper added. “It’s a nice event, and kids really like it.” For more information, readers may search for “Salunga Community Picnic” on Facebook.

Girls on the Run programs aim to help girls to grow individually while also working to develop team-building skills. Girls complete a 5K at the end of the program in celebration of what they have achieved.
New Curriculum Planned For Third Through Fifth Grades By Ann Mead Ash
During the spring 2018 semester, Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster boasted teams in every school district
in the county. Jennifer West, program director for GOTR Lancaster, expects about 850 girls in elementary and middle school to sign up to benefit from the program in the new school year, noting that many of those will be introduced to the new curriculum, available to girls in the third- through fifth-grade See Girls On The Run pg 2

on our website, we will not have a team there unless we find coaches,” West explained. “Don’t assume there will be a team there in the fall because there was one in the spring.” To offer more teams at more schools, West and GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson are recruiting coaches. “The coaching opportunity is one you will never forget,” stated Johnson. “(If an individual) has an interest in being a role model for girls and helping to pave the way to their futures, contact us,” she added. According to West and Johnson, coaching is an investment of less than four hours per week. Teams meet directly after school for 90-minute practices two afternoons a week, and there is a short amount of preparation time required for reading over the lesson. Head coaches must be at least 18 years of age, but assistant coaches can be in ninth through 12th grades. Individuals who are interested in coaching are asked to complete a volunteer application by clicking on the volunteer tab at http://gotrlancaster.org. Training sessions will be held for volunteer coaches.

During the remainder of the program, the team undertakes a community impact project, which gives coaches an opportunity to talk about how the individual is part of a greater world and how to make an impact. Girls who wish to take part in the fall program may do so through a lottery registration program at http://gotrlancaster.org. Lottery registration will open on Wednesday, Aug. 8. On Friday, Aug. 17, the computer lottery will choose girls at random for teams at each participating school. Following the lottery, registration will reopen and participants will be chosen on a first-come, firstserved basis until a team is full through Tuesday, Sept. 11. The first GOTR practices at area schools will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 4. According to West, girls who would like to register can find a list of teams on the previously mentioned website. “If you don’t see your school listed as a team

goal of the program is to give girls access to their inner strength by working with trained coaches in small groups. During the program, girls in elementary and middle school are encouraged to develop skills and habits they can rely on throughout life. GOTR uses physical activity coupled with specific lessons to help develop competency in areas related to social, psychological, and physical development. GOTR is not a competitive running program, but the curriculum uses running to teach life skills and promote health. The middle school program goes by the name Heart and Sole. West described the new curriculum as having the same great mission, but utilizing new activities and exercises. “The first four weeks, lessons focus on the girl herself,” explained West, who noted that participants will delve into what makes each girl a great friend or helper and discovering what she likes about herself. “They really look inward,” she said. During the second four weeks, the girls take what they

Postcard Expo from pg 1 Dede Schaeffer, who is also a charter member of the club, which was formed in 1990 at the behest of Jim Ward and Charlie Griffiths. Postcards were initially developed in the 1800s, and they were a highlight of the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893. Initially, they consisted of an image on the front and a space to write the address on the back. In 1907, the divided back was introduced. “Until then, they couldn’t write more than the address on the back, so often they wrote (in small letters) around the border on the front,” Greider explained. Postcards from that time period still exist, as do others produced in the years since. Uncountable postcards will be displayed and available for purchase at the 26th annual Postcard Exposition that the Lancaster County Postcard Club will host on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. themes of advertising, holidays, real photos, town views, and more. Prices typically range from a quarter to hundreds of dollars. Additionally, club members will exhibit boards displaying groups of cards in the subjects of Pennsylvania views, transportation, advertising, and real photos pre-1950. “You can look at the boards and get an idea of what (the subject) is all about,” Greider remarked. The expo is popular among postcard collectors, and a line usually forms at the door before the venue opens. The club also welcomes individuals who are new to the hobby. “People come in who’ve inherited cards and don’t know what to do with them,” Schaeffer related. Postcards were a form of communication heavily used before telephones became standard in homes. Recipients tended to collect the missives in albums. “(Households) had their family Bible, a photo album, and a postcard album,” Schaeffer said. “They’d sit down and look through the albums on Saturday nights.”

“After 40 years of marriage, why should care levels keep us apart?” Keeping couples together is our goal.
Both the images on the front and the text on the reverse of postcards tell stories. Schaeffer noted that club members have discovered cards bearing the signatures of famous folks, and she has personally rubbed shoulders with notable individuals who collect postcards. For club member Susan Glass, an interest in her hometown introduced her to deltiology - the word for the study and collection of postcards. “A lot of people look for views of their hometown,” Glass commented. “Once you get hooked, then you find something else to collect.” The Lancaster County Postcard Club welcomes new members, and guests may attend club meetings free of charge. A small fee will be charged for admission to the Postcard Expo. A 4-H group will sell hot and cold food and beverages. Gift certificates to be used toward the purchase of postcards at the expo will be awarded in door prize drawings throughout the day. Pamoja: An Evening In Kenya The Baba Nyumbani Children’s Performing Group (pictured) is made up of children who were once orphaned and now have found a family and a home at Horizon’s Baba Nyumbani Micro Community in Kenya. The group will perform at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church on Aug. 9.
The members of the Baba Nyumbani Children’s Performing Group will be traveling from Kitale, Kenya, to the United States for a special performance as part of “Pamoja: An Evening in Kenya” on Thursday, Aug. 9, at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. The family-friendly event, which is open to the public, is being hosted by the Burkholder Family Foundation in conjunction with Horizon: Empower the Orphaned, a Lancaster-based nonprofit organization committed to empowering orphaned children to self-sustainability through a micro community model. Admission is free; however, reservations are requested and may be completed at www.empowertheorphaned.org/ pamoja or by calling 717390-9950. Pamoja means “together” in Swahili, and the evening is designed to create a shared experience of praise, dance, and song as the 15 members of the Baba Nyumbani Children’s Performing Group take the stage.
Convoy Event Passes Goal The 29th annual Mother’s Day Truck Convoy has something to celebrate, more than even before, at the close of the event’s fundraising year. Not only did the convoy attract 539 trucks to participate in this year’s event, but the event broke its own goal by raising a total of $501,387. This record-breaking and historic total will grant the wishes of 50 children within the Susquehanna Valley community.
monthly financial investment that will help to meet a child’s food, shelter, health care, education, and wellness needs through a holistic care approach and micro community model. Sponsors receive a child profile, letters from their child, and updates on the impact of their financial support, as well as access to a personal online interface to communicate with their child and offer encouragement. According to Schneider, Horizon was founded in 2004 by a group of entrepreneurial philanthropists determined to solve the
problem of ineffective institutional orphan care. Horizon aims to empower orphaned children to long-term sustainability with the goal of permanently breaking the cycle of poverty. “Our vision is to radically transform the way orphaned children are cared for by expanding our micro community model to countries around the world,” stated Schneider. To learn more about Horizon: Empower the Orphaned and the stories of the children in the Baba Nyumbani Children’s Performing Group, readers may visit www.empowertheorphaned.org.

Christine M. Schneider of Horizon said that the group is composed of youths ranging in age from 12 to 19 from the Baba Nyumbani Micro Community. Guests will have the opportunity to hear the orphaned children’s stories of rescue, restoration, and empowerment. A catered hors d’oeuvre reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. will provide time for guests to interact with the children and to experience a bit of what life is like in the Baba Nyumbani Micro Community through virtual reality goggles. “A micro community creates an authentic family support system for children who lost their family - a place where orphaned children can experience love and support with house moms and dads to help guide them through life while they pursue their vocational or academic dreams to successful independence,” Schneider explained. The program will begin at 7:15 p.m. and conclude by 9 p.m. A freewill offering will be received to benefit Horizon: Empower the Orphaned. A matching contribution will be made for up to $50,000. Child sponsorship opportunities will also be available. Horizon’s sponsorship program allows individuals to make a

offers an alternative solution for students in kindergarten through grade six whose parents desire for their children to be at home while also benefiting from the services of a Christian school. University Model students are on campus part-time. Students in kindergarten through grade two spend two days per week on campus. Those in grades three through six are on campus three days per week. The remaining days of the week, referred to as satellite days, are spent completing teacher-directed academic activities at home
under the guidance of parents. Students’ educational experiences are also outreach oriented. Through its values and heritage, the school seeks to empower students to be confident in whom God has created them to be. LCCS has been providing a Christian education for more than 65 years in Lancaster County. Reservations are requested by visiting www.lccs.cc/openhouse. For information about enrollment, readers may contact Diane Dissmore, director of admissions, at 717-556-0711, ext. 214.

Prospective students in preschool through 12th grade and their families may attend an open house at Lancaster County Christian School (LCCS) on Thursday, Aug. 9.
The Library System was awarded a grant from Music for Everyone Foundation in the amount of $1,216 to support the acquisition of percussion instruments to enhance library programs. The musical instrument collection is available to all public youth librarians, Be Ready Rover program coordinator, and the Bookmobile staff. Libraries will host “Together We Are Music” events and other music-oriented programming for youth and families during the summer and in the future. Library programs and library outreach supports children’s learning and creative needs in giving them access to materials, like instruments, and opportunities. Using their imagination, children will learn about tempo and volume, creatively express themselves, and perform in a nonjudgmental atmosphere. The Music for Everyone Foundation is committed to supporting music as a positive impact in the community by awarding grants to schools and community groups to support music programs. For more information about the Music for Everyone program, readers may visit www.musicforeveryone.net.

LancasterHistory.org, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster, will offer a variety of programs in August. There is a cost to attend, unless otherwise noted. For more details, including tickets, readers may visit www.lancasterhistory.org or call 717-392-4633. Advance tickets are highly recommended for most programs. On Saturday, Aug. 4, the Living History at Wheatland program, “The Trans-Atlantic Cable: The Eighth Wonder of the World,” will take place. In this first-person presentation, visitors will be transported back to August 1858 as President Buchanan and family celebrate the completion of the TransAtlantic Cable. The completion of the cable connected President Buchanan in the United States with Queen Victoria in the United Kingdom, a feat that many
newspapers called the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” Presentations will be on the hour from noon to 2 p.m. and last about a half hour. A new children’s program, the Summer Storytime Series, will begin on Tuesday, Aug. 7, at 11 a.m. In conjunction with the summer exhibition, “Amending America,” the program will offer stories about civil rights, freedom, creating the U.S. Constitution, and what it means to be an American. Children will also have the opportunity to make a fun history-themed craft or activity. This program is designed for children age 3 and up, but it is ideal for elementary school children. The program is free for children with an accompanying adult. Registration is requested. A curator’s tour of the “Amending America: The Bill of Rights”
exhibit will take place at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 9. The exhibit focuses on the 14th Equal Protection Amendment and its author, Pennsylvania Congressman Thaddeus Stevens. Stevens was a vigorous advocate of public education and abolition and a supporter of the Underground Railroad. Tanger Arboretum’s Nature Series will feature “Insects” at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18. A parks naturalist will lead participants in the exploration of insects crawling, hopping, and flying about the Tanger Arboretum. Participants will learn how to attract butterflies and caterpillars. The event will take place rain or shine. The Lunchtime Lecture Series will feature “Breaking Through: The Barney Ewell Story” at noon in Ryder Hall at Friday, Aug. 24. LancasterHistory.org National
Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship recipient Jeremiah Miller will show and answer questions about his 50-minute documentary, “Breaking Through: The Barney Ewell Story.” Ewell emerged as a track and field prodigy while growing up in the city of Lancaster, earning recognition around the country, and became the fastest man in the world while running for Penn State, breaking the world record for the 50-yard dash with a time of five seconds flat. The event is free, but registration is required by Monday, Aug. 20. Go-at-Your-Own-Pace Tours of Wheatland will take place on Saturday, Aug. 25. Tour entries will begin every 15 minutes from 1 to 3 p.m. Visitors will be allowed to wander the house at their own speed, asking questions of the guides posted in the different rooms.

When an organization collects 40,000 books for a sale and endeavors to sell all those books in four days, drastic sales measures may be employed. The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS) takes on such a challenge with by-the-box discounts beginning on the third day of its annual Bookworm Frolic. On the final day, the box price will be even lower. Although LMHS provides boxes, bookworms may bring their own. “The rule is for it to count, you have to be able to lift (the box of books) yourself,” explained Joel Nofziger, LMHS director of communications, who added jokingly, “Don’t bring a refrigerator box.” This year’s LMHS Bookworm Frolic will take place at LMHS, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, from Wednesday, Aug. 15, through Saturday, Aug. 18. The Frolic will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day except for Aug. 18, when the sale will close at 4 p.m. According to Jon Weaver-Kreider, used book manager for LMHS, who is helming this year’s
sale, books that have been collected for the Frolic fit into more than 20 categories. “We have a lot of theology and religion, history and politics,” said WeaverKreider, who added that he had counted 113 boxes of children’s books. Weaver-Kreider listed cookbooks, fiction, novels, and Christian fiction among the other categories that will be well represented at the sale. A number of foreign language books in German were also donated for the Frolic. While most of the books available for purchase will be set up outside the LMHS building under a tent, the music section and new books, which will be sold at special discount prices during the sale, will be located inside. Weaver-Kreider noted that food at this year’s sale will be provided by food trucks. “On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, we will have Italian sandwiches, breakfast sandwiches, and hot dogs, and on Saturday, we will have breakfast burritos, burgers, sandwiches, saffron and jasmine rice, kabobs, and Costa Rican chicken sandwiches,” said Weaver-Kreider, who added that

the food trucks were selected for the diverse menus they offer. According to Nofziger, nothing donated for the sale will end up in the trash. “At the very end of the sale, we allow organizations to bid by category,” Nofziger explained. “On Saturday, if there’s a category an organization is interested in, they can make a bid to buy all the books in that category that do not sell, and they just have to come and collect them.” Organizations that have an interest in buying a lot of books may contact Weaver-Kreider at 717-393-9745. Items that are not purchased are recycled to raise funds for Mennonite Central Committee Relief and Development projects. A number of volunteers help make the Bookworm Frolic a success. Weaver-Kreider calculated that 20 volunteers are needed daily to help during the sale, and that about 100 volunteers are involved in the overall event. During the year, up to 30 volunteers help sort incoming book donations. The sale attracts about 4,000 visitors annually, raising up to $40,000 for the organization. All funds raised by the event become part of the general

The production will celebrate the diversity of Lancaster’s residents, exploring the variety of experiences, ideas, cultures, and beliefs that make Lancaster a dynamic place to live. Organizers are seeking lively writing and energetic performances that will consider the community in all its complexity. made of wood, cork, or foam. Each decoy must float upright and have a 12-foot string and a weight attached. There is a set fee to enter one decoy, and the fee will be lower for each entry thereafter. Individuals may enter as many decoys as they wish. An awards ceremony is planned for approximately 3 p.m. The contest will feature a division for adults and another for youths age 16 and under. The top three winners in each species for each division will receive a ribbon, and the best of show winners for Diver, Puddler, and Confidence classes will each receive an additional prize. Food vendors will sell chicken tenders, fried chicken sandwiches, french fries, snow cones, cupcakes, and more. Additionally, the “River Crossing exhibit inside the River Trails Center will be viewable for those interested in river transportation history related to canals, arks, and bridge history. Columbia Crossing manager Hope Byers described the Conejohela Flats as an area with low-lying islands and mud flats that has been designated by the National
Audubon Society as an Important Bird Area. More than 250 species of birds have been identified and seen at the flats. Water birds, wading birds, and waterfowl use the area regularly, while large flocks of tundra swans and snow geese congregate seasonally in late winter and early spring. Byers said the flats are a popular spot for water fowling and paddling. To learn more, readers may call Kneisley at 717-666-4595 or visit www.lancasterpadelta.org.

Duck hunting boats dating back to the 1940s will be on display on shore for attendees to see, and owners will share about the history the boats played in hunting the Susquehanna River. Rollover boats and bushwhack or sculling rigs will be among those on display. According to Kneisley, decoys have played a large role in the history of Lancaster and York counties as far as how the area was hunted. “Columbia has been wellversed in duck hunting for years, added Kneisley. Registration for the duck decoy contest will open at 10 a.m., and judging will begin at 11 a.m. Decoys will float in the Susquehanna River approximately 20 feet from the shoreline, where judging will be conducted. “This is a different style competition, because the birds are out into the water, explained Kneisley. “They have to judge the birds in a live situation. Carvers from Pennsylvania and several surrounding states will participate.
