Reforging Old Bonds

After leaving the Navy and parting ways, Paul and Peter each found success in their respective careers. Paul’s father worked in heating and plumbing, and after a four-year sabbatical Paul joined the field. He ran his own business and worked in plumbing for 39 years; he and his wife moved to Lancaster nine years ago. “Paul did exactly what I thought he would do,” said Peter. “He’s always been a straight shooter and a solid person.” Peter began working as a pipeline welder and attended the University of Massachusetts. An internship in Washington, D.C., led him to a career with the Department of Labor, where he worked in arbitration and mediation for 30 years. His work brought him to Virginia, where he currently lives with his “Whetherwife. you’re serving for patriotic reasons or you’re just doing it before you start your career, you learn what you can and do your time,” said Peter. “When you form a bond with someone in that context, it’s a strong one. You think about those people when you leave.” Paul concurred and said he has been hoping to reconnect with others who served on the Essex for many years. The pair recalled old stories and brought each other up to speed on the events of the many decades they spent apart, proving that some bonds are stronger than the test of time.

BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD Hempfield Field Hockey Booster Club will host a chicken barbecue at Stauffers of Kissel Hill, 301 Rohrerstown Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, Aug. 20, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Full meals will include Peters’ BBQ chicken, a baked potato, applesauce and a drink for a set price. Meals are able to be purchased on the day of the event, with cash or check payment preferred. Electronic payment will also be available. The proceeds from the barbecue will directly support the team and its activities for the upcoming season. Over the past year, the booster club assisted players with attending multiple summer camps as they honed their field hockey skills, as well as helping with various team needs. “The school athletic fund assists with certain things, but the booster club does the rest,” said Jen Landis, a member of the booster club.

It had been 53 years and 11 months since Paul last spoke to his friend and former Navy colleague Peter. “As soon as I heard his voice, I knew it was him.” Paul said. Peter was visiting Edison, N.J., Paul’s hometown, and said reachmotivatedcuriosityhimtoout.“Beingthere reminded me of Paul, and I wondered where he was and what he was up to.” said Peter. “I searched online and called a few different Paul Anselmos before I finally got ahold of him.” The two organized for Peter and his wife to come to Lancaster so Peter and Paul could reunite in person.Paul graduated high school in 1966, just as the Vietnam War was coming to a head. His mother urged him to join the Navy reserves, as he would be at risk of being drafted into the Army unless he attended college. Paul and Peter first kindled their friendship aboard the USS Essex, an aircraft carrier that they were both assigned to in the repair division during the Cold War. The pair weathered many experiences together during their service, from a Russian plane plummeting into the sea beside their vessel to anti-war protestors attempting to get them to desert while at port. “We all bunked together. It was hard not to get acquainted,” said Peter. “I remember his mother used to ship him food in care packages; the first time I ever had artichokes was when she sent him a box of them.”

“This is a picnic in the cemetery,” said Kathy Hohenadel, describing Fête en Noir. “And we ask people to dress in black if they can.” Fête en Noir is a fundraiser for the Mount Bethel Cemetery, noted Hohenadel, who is a board member of the Friends of Mount Bethel Cemetery and the cemetery itself. The event will be held on Friday, Sept. 9, at the cemetery, 700 Locust St. Entrance to the grounds will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the event will run from 6 to 9 p.m. Seating is limited for the Fête en Noir, and a discount will be available for tickets purchased through Wednesday, Aug. 31. Participants should bring their own picnic to enjoy at tables set up throughout the front half of the cemetery. “We supply tables, chairs and linens,” Hohenadel explained. “People can bring a canopy if they want to, or additional tables for their food. They can use their imagination to make the event as downhome or a chic as they want it to be.”

This is the fourth year for the Fête en Noir, and this year’s event will feature live music from Over Easy. The band performs classic party rock ’n’ roll Proceedsmusic.from the event will benefit the cemetery and will be used for maintenance and lawncare, among other expenses, Hohenadel stated. The cemetery is the final resting place for many people who played key roles in Columbia’s history. It’s full of interesting statuary and striking grave markers, she said, adding that Fête participants are encouraged to walk around and explore the grounds. “It’s just a fun time to enjoy a picnic, socialize, dance to some great music and chat with your neighbors,” she said. The Fête en Noir is sponsored by the Columbia Fraternal Association, the Foresters of America Court Susquehanna 235, the American Legion Paul Revere Leber Post 372, the Columbia Lions Club, KleenRite Corporation, Melanie B. Scheid Funeral Directors, Nikolaus & Hohenadel, Sunsnappers and Truist Bank. The Hempfield field hockey program serves to enrich students’ high school experience. Participants are coached on dedication, teamwork and sportsmanship, and the mission of the coaches is to procure a productive learning environment and improve the players’ skill sets through the lens of field hockey. “I love watching the growth of athletes on the field and in school,” said Landis. “The players don’t know each other very well at the beginning of the season, but by the end they make connections naturally as a part of the team.”

The program also works to expand the field hockey community in the area, working with beginner players during the off season to connect current and future athletes.

Landis also noted that the Lancaster-Lebanon League is expanding field hockey to the youth level, and the first Hempfield youth field hockey team will debut in the fall for children in kindergarten through sixth grade. “The youth program is an extension of the work we’ve done over the years to grow field hockey,” said Landis. “Our players help out with camps and the younger kids, and it’s a nice way for them to give back to the community.” When asked what the players’ favorite aspect of the program is, Landis said, “I think it’s two-fold: setting goals and achieving individual success as well as belonging to a team. A player might have a bad game, but if the team does well, it’s a collective success.”Theseason will kick off with a match against East Pennsboro on Wednesday, Aug. 24, and a scrimmage will be held on Saturday, Aug. 27 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Hempfield High School quad, with four teams competing tournamentstyle. The first official game of the season will be against Manheim Central on Friday, Sept. 2, at 10 a.m.

Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (Alpha-1) is a genetic (inherited) condition – it is passed from parents to their children through their genes. Alpha-1 may result in serious lung disease in adults and/or liver disease at any age. For each trait a person inherits, there are usually two genes; one gene comes from each parent. People with Alpha-1 have received two abnormal alpha-1 antitrypsin genes. One of these abnormal genes came from their mother and one from their father.  Alpha-1 is a rare disease that is even more rarely diagnosed, with over 90% of patients thought to be undiagnosed.  Alpha-1 is the #1 known genetic risk factor for COPD and may be a contributing cause for up to 3% of COPD cases in the United States.  Alpha -1 testing is recommended by ATS, CHEST, COPD foundation, WHO and GOLD.  THE MONTH OF AUGUST!
