The Black Knights Lacrosse Club and the Hempfield Girls Lacrosse Club invite members of the public to pick up their golf clubs for the second annual Hempfield Boys/Girls Lacrosse Clubs Golf Tournament on Sunday, Sept. 23, at Four Seasons Golf Course, 949 Church St., Landisville. The proceeds will be evenly divided between the athletic organizations, both of which offer competitive lacrosse for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. “Any kid in Lancaster County can join,” said Christine Rhoads, who serves as the fundraising chair for both clubs. She noted that while the members are predominantly residents of Hempfield School District, recent team members have hailed from Donegal School
District and the School District of Lancaster, as well as Saint Leo the Great Catholic School. The main season runs from March through May, with the fall season dedicated to clinics that are open to any elementary or middle school student interested in the sport. “They’re a nice way for the kids to try it out,” Rhoads commented. “It’s complementary to soccer and football for the boys and soccer and field hockey for the girls,” she added. Approximately 200 student-athletes are involved in the two clubs, and many go on to play on the Hempfield High School lacrosse teams. The clubs strive to inspire students’ interest in lacrosse and to develop players’ skills so they are competitive at the advanced level. One of the features of the Hempfield lacrosse clubs is the access to See Lacrosse Clubs pg 7

Cyclists line up to begin the 2017 Bike Millersville event. This year’s fundraiser will be held on Sept. 15, beginning at the Winter Visual and Performing Arts Center at Millersville University. By Ann Mead Ash
Clara Ames, executive director of No Longer Alone Ministries (NLAM), knows a bit about the history of the event now called Bike Millersville. “(The ride) is 19 years running, but it hasn’t always had the same name,” noted
Ames. “It used to be called the Dream Ride.” Ames added that the sponsoring organizations of the event have changed over the past two decades since the ride was first held. Bike Millersville will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Winter Visual and Performing Arts Center, See Bike Millersville pg 4
The Black Knights Lacrosse Club and the Hempfield Girls Lacrosse Club will co-host a golf tournament on Sept. 23 at Four Seasons Golf Course to raise funds for their respective programs.
Schreiber Center To Host 30th Annual Duckie Race To put a new spin on Ernie the Muppet’s classic song, “Rubber Duckie, you’re the one, who makes fundraising so much fun.” Indeed, for three decades, Schreiber Pediatric Rehab Center has centered its biggest fundraiser around the floating bath toys. Schreiber supporters may purchase tickets for the 30th annual Rubber Duckie Race, which will be held as part of a Rubber Duckie Festival on Sunday, Sept. 9, in Lancaster County Central Park, 1050 Rockford Road, Lancaster. Art Festival from pg 1 One of the two original organizers will return to help manage the 40th anniversary presentation of the Long’s Park Art Festival, slated for Labor Day weekend, Friday, Aug. 31, to Sunday, Sept. 2, at Long’s Park, Route 30 and Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. Hours will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Aug. 31 and Saturday, Sept. 1, as well as 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 2. Rick Faulkner and his late father, Dick Faulkner, were the first organizers of what is now a nationally recognized fine arts show. This year he is serving as the volunteer artistic co-director of the festival. Bonnie St. John is returning for her third year as co-director for festival operations. Rick, an artist himself stated, “The first
Art Festival in Long’s Park was held July 4, 1976, presented by the Lancaster County Bicentennial Committee.” He noted that his father co-chaired the Art and Craft subcommittee of the county organization. Rick remembers that at the time of that first festival, Morris Ressel, the Lancaster city parks director, had worked with the July 4 event and liked what he saw. He approached Dick about presenting an Art Festival with the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation as a fundraiser for the foundation, which needed a new funding source for the free summer music presentations at the amphitheater. The goal was to organize and present a nationalcaliber art and craft festival in Lancaster. The first Labor Day show in 1979 was

A total of 87 artists and craftspeople exhibited. “I had recently finished my master’s degree and was not planning to become involved with the show. I had been involved with some other craft shows during my college years,” Rick recalled. “The week before the inaugural show, my father injured his back and was not able to participate. I stepped in at the last minute to organize the artists and craftspeople. From that first year we built the show with increasing attendance of both the public and artists,” he said. New this year, a beverage garden will feature a libation crafted from a recipe by Benjamin Franklin, who among many other occupations was a pioneering printer in 1700s Philadelphia. A percentage of the sales of the beverages available in the garden will go to finishing construction at the .918 Club’s Heritage Press Education Center on the campus of Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster. “The Printers Fair is the largest of its kind on the East Coast, said Ken Kulakowsky, president of the nonprofit .918 Club, which organizes the annual event. “The fair is a wonderful way to witness history and the future at the same time. Letterpress and other forms of printing are widely popular, and examples can be seen everywhere in society. The letterpress event started in 2013 as a nod to Lancaster’s place in printing history and features vendors and suppliers of letterpress equipment, foundry type, cards, posters, broadsides, ephemera, and more. The sixth Lancaster Printers Fair will be one for the record books as new events including a world record attempt - have been added to the printing event for people of all ages that will be held in downtown Lancaster on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 14 and 15. New this year, “Printing on Penn Square will offer a number of activities from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 14 at 38 Penn Square, Lancaster. The activities will include a demonstration by nationally known itinerant printer Chris Fritton, custom coaster printing with the Heritage Press Museum, and custom T-shirt printing. Attendees may also grab a special printmakers’ beverage at a nearby restaurant and help to raise funds for the construction of the .918 Club’s Heritage Press Education Center by participating in an auction of prizes donated by local businesses. The Printers Fair will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 15. The 300 block of North Queen Street, Lancaster, will be closed to vehicular traffic for the event. Parking will be available for a flat fee in the North Queen Street parking garage. All nearby merchants will remain open for business. The street will be filled with vendors from across the region, printing demonstrations, food trucks, and live
Millersville University, 60 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville. The event will open for packet pickup at 6:30 a.m., and the ride will start at 7:30 a.m., weather permitting. The ride will be held rain or shine, but delays may be made in the case of fog or other hazardous conditions. The ride will feature 5-, 20-, and 30-mile cycling tours and 1-, 2-, and 6.5-mile walking tours throughout the greater Millersville area. Rest stops featuring fruit, water, and snack foods will be located along the routes. The stops will also offer bike support. “There are a number of area bike shops that have partnered with (volunteers from) each of the nonprofits to sponsor the rest stops, explained Ames. The organizations that have partnered to present this year’s ride include NLAM, which is an organization that offers mobile psychiatric rehabilitation services and facilitates faith-based support groups for the purpose of strengthening individuals and families touched by mental illness, and Faith Friendship Ministries of Mountville, which provides residential care and housing, along with shared independent living situations for local individuals. Another sponsor is New Hope Community Life Ministry, located in Quarryville. The organization promotes healing and abundant life through Jesus Christ. Millersville University and the school’s Cy Fritz Foundation, which supports Millersville University’s cross-country and track and field programs, are also sponsors. There is a minimum fee for cyclists and walkers to register for the ride, but participants may also fundraise for a chosen organization. “A lot of people collect sponsorships, and they ask for so much per mile, explained Ames. She added that many of those riders then combine routes, so that they can collect a per-mile amount for up to 60 miles. According to Ames, the organization wants to encourage those who cannot be present for the ride to complete it on their own by signing up at www.nlam.org. Ames added that NLAM hopes to raise $15,000 for its general budget from the ride. Gwen Didden, director of Faith Friendship Ministries, said that her goal is for 10 area residents to participate with the organization to raise $5,000 for Faith Friendship Ministries, and she added that those who
cannot participate themselves may sponsor residents of Faith Friendship who have committed to walk in the event. “We are looking for people in the community to sponsor one of our residents,â€? she said. “We have people who love to walk, but they don’t have connections in the community (to gather sponsors), so if someone would like to sponsor one of them, they can do so.â€? Those who would like to register through Faith Friendship may visit www.faithfriendship.org. Participant Jonathan Shenk said that he first got involved in NLAM after hearing a presentation at West End Mennonite Fellowship. “I found their mission compelling and decided to begin supporting the organization,â€? said Shenk, who discussed his interest in cycling with an NLAM representative. “One thing led to another, and I ended up riding in the event last year and ‌ contributing some ideas for growing the event in coming years.â€?
