Hempfield School District has announced that universal access to free school meals, which was made available for the past two school years due to the pandemic, has ended. The federal funding for the program was not renewed for the 2022-23 school year, which means only eligible families will receive free or reduced-cost meals upon successful completion of the application process for the current school year.

To be eligible for the program, a family must complete an application for every school year. Applications may be completed at any time and will be approved based on federal standards for family size and income.

Hempfield School District families wishing to apply for free and reduced-cost meals for the current school year may visit www.hempfieldsd .org/foodservices and click Apply for Free and Reduced Meals on the left side of the page.

The aforementioned website includes resources such as an overview letter, eligibility guidelines, and online and print versions of the applications with instructions. Information is also available in Spanish, and there is a link for language translation of the application. The website also includes details on school menus, SchoolCafé login information, meal prices, payment options, and nutritional information.

Questions regarding free and reduced-cost meals can be directed to the Food Services Department at 717-898-5566.

175th Anniversary Celebration Set

Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1905 Broad St., East Petersburg, will celebrate its 175th anniversary in the fall. The church was founded in 1847, and the theme of the anniversary celebration is “Great Is Thy Faithfulness.”

The kickoff for the celebration will begin on Sunday, Sept. 11. Members of the congregation will share the history and symbolism of the stained-glass windows throughout the church’s sanctuary, followed by a potluck luncheon, games, and fellowship. Most of the stained glass windows in the church were installed in 1904, and their stories will be told as a part of church services in September and October.

On Sunday, Oct. 2, Vocal Harmonix, a women’s a cappella show chorus, will perform a free concert at 3 p.m. in the church sanctuary. The group rehearses weekly at the church.

On Sunday, Oct. 23, Zion will celebrate the anniversary with a special service, featuring the participation of former pastors and organists. The Rev. Pamela Carnes, interim minister, will officiate at the service. Special music will be provided, including a hymn composed by Jim and Sara Lee Riggs titled “The Jubilee Hymn.” To culminate the day, a luncheon for church members and guests will be held at Bent Creek Country Club, 620 Bent Creek Drive, Lititz.

The Knightmares rugby team

Vogel’s family operates the Petal Pot Market to raise money for her training.

Vogel maintains a rigorous training schedule six days a week. On Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays she trains at Team Beast Mode in Lancaster, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays she practices for three hours with the Knightmares. Following her team practice, she trains further with the boys’ rugby team. To raise the funds needed to maintain her demanding training schedule, Vogel and her family operate a market outside of their home in Washington Boro called The Petal on Penn. The market sells produce grown by the family. “We do a lot of things to fundraise and keep up with her training,” said Thompson. “Bella grows and sells the produce; every penny goes straight to her and supports her training.” Vogel’s family also runs the Petal Pot Market, attending different events and sell lemonade. The Petal Pot Market has served events such as weddings and the Washington Boro Tomato Festival, and it will be present at the Conestoga Car Show on Saturday, Sept. 24. Vogel is homeschooled, and her flexible curriculum allows her to manage her intense schedule in pursuit of her ambitious goals. She is also a member of the Cornerstone Co-op, where she takes multiple classes with other homeschooled students. “Bella has aspirations to get into the Olympics in 2028 as a player on the USA Youth National Team,” said Thompson. “The goal is for her to be invited to USA rugby camp, where she would have an opportunity to prepare and qualify.” For more information or to support the Petal Pot Market, visit https://thepetal potmarket.com/.

Shcherbakova To Present Concert

On Sunday, Sept. 11, Church of the Apostles United Church of Christ will host a concert by singer-composer Kira Shcherbakova. The concert will take place at 3 p.m. in the pavilion at the church’s Rader Park on Apostles Way, 1850 Marietta Ave., Lancaster.

Shcherbakova has written songs for adults and children. She was born in Ukraine to a Jewish family, came to the United States when she was 10 years old, and became a Christian in 2010. Her goal has been to become a professional singer, and she believes God gave her a purpose, which is to sing for Christ. She hopes to encourage people to follow God’s plan for them.

There is no cost to attend. For more information, call 717-392-5718 or email office@apostlesucc.org.

Summer campers at Chesterbrook Academy Preschools recently participated in two community service projects.

Campers at Chesterbrook Academy Preschool Lancaster donated more than $350 to benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), a national childhood cancer foundation dedicated to funding research, raising awareness, supporting families and empowering everyone to help cure childhood cancer. To raise money for the foundation, campers sold lemonade and cookies to their fellow campers, their families, staff members and teachers.

Campers at Chesterbrook Academy Preschool at College Hill donated more than $100 to Lancaster County Community Foundation, which supports more than 500 local organizations and works to better the community for generations to come. To raise money for the foundation, campers held a Penny War at the school, where classrooms competed to see who could collect the most pennies.

Through both initiatives, campers learned the importance of spreading kindness and helping those in need.

For more information about Chesterbrook Academy Preschools, visit www.Chester brookAcademy.com.
