Second Annual Mountville 5K Set For Oct. 13 By Dayna M. Reidenouer

“It was a slam-bang success,” Kathi Markley said of the first Mountville 5K, which she helped to plan last year. “The weather was perfect.” A total of 120 people registered for the race, and $10,000 was raised for Save A Warrior (SAW), an organization Ronald “Jake” Clark of Mount Joy founded in order to offer first responders, active-duty military personnel, and veterans another option for dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The annual St. John’s Herr Estate (SJHE) Fall Fest, featuring an indoor yard sale and food sale, will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15. Plenty of free parking for the event will be available at the main building, located at 200 Luther Lane, Columbia. Items for sale will include household goods, dishes and glassware, seasonal and holiday decorations, plants, linens, clothing, jewelry, purses, books, CDs, lamps, picture frames, tools, and more. “There’s something for everyone,” said volunteer Ann Grubb, adding that everything will be reasonably priced. One area will feature items handmade by residents, including several knitted and crocheted creations. Food, including chicken corn soup, hot dogs, sandwiches, and beverages, will be available for purchase as well. Chicken corn soup may also be purchased by the quart for carryout. Residents will also sell

a variety of homemade baked goods, such as pies, cakes, cookies, fudge, bread, and caramel popcorn - all of which organizers say tend to be bestsellers each year. The event is sponsored by the SJHE Residents’ Council. All proceeds from Fall Fest will be donated to local nonprofit organizations like Hands Across the Street, Columbia Quick Response Service, Luthercare’s Columbia Day Care Center, Power Packs Project, and the Columbia Public Library. Residents’ Council officers include president Carolyn Livingston, vice president Bob Herr, and financial secretary Mary Miller. The Residents’ Council meets once a month, hosts social events like an annual New Year’s Eve party, and participates in various fundraisers throughout the year in addition to Fall Fest, including sales of Christmas cookies, subs, Easter candy, apple dumplings, and more. “For our size (as a retirement home) - we’re not that big - we really do a lot in the community,” Livingston noted.

The 39th annual Amos Herr Community Festival will take place on Sunday, Sept. 16, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Amos Herr Park, 1700 Nissley Road, Landisville. In the case of rain, the event will take place on Sunday, Sept. 23. The community event will feature the Landisville Lions Club Car Show, Kid’s Zone, crafts, food trucks, entertainment and free tours of the Amos Herr 1852

Homestead and Tobacco Barn. Another highlight of the day is the Lancaster Kennel Club’s events, including K-9 Search and Rescue demonstrations, disc demonstrations, a Meet the Breeds activity, and a micro-chipping service offered for a fee. Live entertainment will begin at 11 a.m. in the pavilion with a performance of the national anthem by the March Masters. A flag ceremony by the Red

Rose Veterans Honor Guard and more patriotic songs and marches will be offered until 11:45 a.m. The Bavarian Barons will perform German polkas, waltzes, marches, and folk tunes. Dancers from various groups will perform cultural dances from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Car show awards recognition will begin at approximately 3:45 p.m. More than 55 crafters and vendors will offer handmade jewelry, woodwork,

and seasonal wares. Food will be available for purchase. The Kid’s Zone will feature crafts, a bounce house, and a scavenger hunt with goodie bags and a grand prize. Admission is free. Parking donations will benefit the Landisville Lions Club service projects. “We just christened it, and we’ve been debugging it. We have to tweak (the process) so it’s honed,” said Pet Pantry executive director Melody Sanders. “We will start scheduling more appointments (after the) fall, and we’re hoping to find someone to pull it. (Once it’s fully operational), I think it will be a valuable resource for the community.” The mobile unit was designed to serve three purposes. First, the traveling veterinary facility can host feral clinics on farms or in communities where feral cats live in abundance. Spay/neuter and vaccination services will be available during those clinics. “We’re trying to get a trap-neuterrelease initiative going,” Sanders said. “We’re willing to work with communities who can get out there and trap (feral cats).” Second, the mobile unit can host vaccine clinics for family pets. It is important to ensure animals are current on protection from rabies, distemper, and other viruses. Third, the brightly colored trailer will be an eye-catching addition to promotional events. It is air-conditioned, so cats that are available for adoption will be able to rest comfortably for folks to meet inside. The open house will include self-guided tours of the Pet Pantry’s headquarters, visits with adoptable cats, a meet-andgreet with canine mascot Sasha, and refreshments. Pets are welcome to accompany their owners and pose together for fall fun pictures for a fee. A limited number of Halloween costumes will be available for pets to wear in the

photos. Additional costumes may be purchased in the fully stocked thrift shop. Folks may also buy tickets for the third annual bingo fundraiser that will be held on Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Columbus Association, 1575 New Danville Pike, Lancaster, and order their bulbs for the annual Light the Way to Meet the Need event. Bulbs may be dedicated in memory or honor of pets and people. They will be displayed at the Pet Pantry during December, and a lighting ceremony will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 6 p.m. Pictures with Santa Claus will be available for a fee from 3 to 6 p.m. that day. There is no cost to attend the open house, but attendees are asked to bring dry food for dogs and cats. “It’s our opportunity to fill our shelves with the food we need to prepare for the holiday season,” Sanders said. “We do a double distribution in November and none in December so that everyone has what they need for the holidays.” The Pet Pantry regularly distributes 5,000 pounds of pet food each month. Distributions take place in Gap and Coatesville, as well as at Water Street Mission and the Pet Pantry. The organization supplies food to rescue groups on an emergency basis. The Pet Pantry also supports more than 140 cats that are available for adoption. Most of the animals live in foster homes, but a few temporarily reside at the Pet Pantry. About 15 felines are anticipated to be present at the open house. For more information about the open house, readers may call 717-983-8878, email petpantryoflancaster@gmail.com, or visit www.petpantrylc.org.

CLC Slates Program The Circle Legacy Center (CLC) will present its Second Friday program on Friday, Sept. 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Community Mennonite Church, 328 W. Orange St., Lancaster. Attendees should enter the basement via

the last door on Concord Street. After an introduction by CLC board member Sandi Cianciulli, attendees will view the awardwinning film “What Was Ours.” For more details, visit www.circlelegacycenter.org.

As far as Torah Bontrager can tell, she is the first Amish person to graduate from an Ivy League school. Bontrager’s path to Columbia University was fraught with pain, however, and she shared her story in her memoir, “An Amish Girl in Manhattan: Escaping at Age 15, Breaking All the Rules, and Feeling Safe Again,” which was published in 2017. Bontrager’s experiences led to the formation of the Amish Heritage Foundation (AHF), which is dedicated to advocating for people inside and outside the Amish Church - what is known in non-Amish societies as “Old Order” - and making the transition smoother for those who have left or wish to leave. “We’re the only nonsectarian institution that advocates for Amish people and engages their issues and educates the general public,” Bontrager commented. “The three overarching initiatives of the foundation are education, female-driven

Among the selections Kim will perform at the Sept. 18 concert will be “Soli Deo Gloria” and Massenet’s “Meditation” from “Thais,” which is Kim’s signature piece. His selections will also include “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross,” “Banjo and Fiddle,” and “Carmen Fantasy.” Tickets to Kim’s concert are available at http://messiahsingalong.com, and purchasers may select seats from those available. Seats in the balcony will be sold at a discount, and discounts will be offered for senior citizens, military personnel, and students. Any tickets remaining on the day of the concert will be available at the door.

When violinist David Kim performs at the Calvin and Janet High Fine Art Center at Lancaster Mennonite School, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at 7:30 p.m., the event will benefit another musical presentation - the “Messiah” Sing-Along which has been held each spring and winter in Lancaster and Chester counties for more than 20 years. The “Messiah” Sing-Along is a musical event that includes no rehearsals and features volunteer singers and musicians. According to conductor Clair Leaman, the event is unique because people can just show up and sing. The piece is treated as a performance, but Leaman noted that sometimes people in the audience sing along too. The Lancaster County Sing-Along has been held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. The Chester County presentation has been held at Upper Octorara

The conference will be packed full of opportunities for attendees to explore issues related to Amish culture. Recordings of all 10 speakers and the panel discussion will be made accessible online for later reference. The keynote address by law professor Marci Hamilton on Sept. 28 will focus on children’s rights. In her book “God vs. the Gavel: The Perils of Extreme Religious Liberty,” which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, Hamilton wrote extensively about the Supreme Court case of Wisconsin vs. Yoder. The conference will also include speakers who have left other religions, a sexual assault survivor and plaintiff in a landmark Amish case, and a panel of minority entrepreneurs including those with Amish, Mennonite, Navajo, Jewish, and Muslim backgrounds. will be greeted by a display of roadside snacks that can be found throughout India, reminiscent of the teeming streets of Old Delhi or the lanes of the remote countryside. Chefs will prepare vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals with exotic spices, herbs, and roots in front of guests. South Indian fare will be featured this year as well. Just as in Italy cuisine is divided between north and south, cooking styles and dishes differ between northern and southern India. There is no cost to attend the Namaste celebration, but participation in some of the activities will have a nominal artist fee. Walk-ins are welcome, but preregistration is appreciated. Folks may email admin@ iolcpa.org with the number of individuals who will attend. For more information, readers may visit www.iolcpa.org.

Hempfield drew first blood a little Mark Ashley. “Spring-Ford is a big over one minute into the game on Suchar’s goal. Johnson doubled the lead 16 minutes into the second half. “Drew Johnson and Jake Suchar were our leading scorers last year,” said Ashley, whose 2017 squad made it all the way to the PIAA Class-AAAA state championship match. “They seem to have picked up where they left off a year ago.” Goalkeeper Tristan Green recorded the shutout. He is one of three goalies Ashley is rotating through the schedule with the others being Brady Ross and Grant Deohring. The Knights left the comforts of home but were equally dominant on defense at Chambersburg on Thursday afternoon. The Trojans’ defense was also tough, giving up only one goal on a penalty kick, which Johnson converted Photo by Don Scanlin Hempfield goalie Tristan Green makes in the 34th minute of the one of his six saves in the Black Knights’ match. “Drew got in on a 2-0 nonleague win over Spring-Ford last breakaway with a great Tuesday in Landisville.

He was able to finish it with a penalty shot. “Chambersburg is a strong offensive team,” continued the coach. “We handled it pretty well when they were pressing. Anytime you can get a shutout, you’re happy.” Recording this shutout was Ross. Hempfield wrapped up the week with a Saturday morning match at Governor Mifflin. The offense was wide awake early and reeled off 13 shots on goal in a 4-1 victory.

Pohl and Ryan Hepler scored in the first half. Johnson made it 3-0 less than four minutes into the second half. Colson Hunt came through with a last-minute goal to give the Knights the final margin of victory. Suchar, Pohl, Hepler and Brady Argall each notched an assist. For Pohl it was his third assist of the season. “Eddie is one of the returning midfielders,” Ashley remarked. “He has great vision and distributes the ball well. He was a solid player for us last year, but had a season-ending injury four or five games in.”

FOOTBALL The Knights suffered a heartbreaking defeat against non-league foe Central York on Friday night. The Panthers, on the strength of senior quarterback Cade Pribula passing for 399 yards, scored a late touchdown to top the Knights 35-31 at Landisville. The loss dropped Hempfield to 1-2 on the year with their first Section One game over the horizon at Warwick on Friday. Pribula’s pass landed in the hands of Taylor Wright Rawls in the final seconds of regulation. The scoring drive came after the Knights had taken a 31-28 lead on a Curtis Johnson field goal from 25 yards out. Hempfield had the lead early on, grabbing a 14-0 advantage in the second quarter. The Knights’ touchdowns came on a one-yard run by quarterback Colin Peters in the first quarter and Matt Heuston’s 25-yard dash in the second stanza - Johnson converted both PAT kicks. Heuston went on to lead the team in rushing. He compiled 156 yards of real estate on 32 carries. Wright-Rawls hauled in the first of his two touchdowns before intermission, catching Pribula’s 56-yard pass.

Peters, who finished with 14 completions on 19 pass attempts and 195 yards, threw the first of his two touchdown passes, finding Darien Ressler on an electrifying 63-yard score. The big play helped Ressler finish with a team-high 93 receiving yards on five receptions. Hempfield had the momentum, only to see the Panthers score 21 straight points before the end of the third period. Peters helped guide the offense to the game-tying touchdown in the fourth quarter - a 12-yard toss to Jackson Shand, who finished with four catches for 46 yards. GIRLS’ SOCCER The Black Knights got off to a 1-2 start on the season, sandwiching a 2-1 victory over Cedar Cliff between two other non-league games. All three matches were played in a span of five days. Head coach Jason Mackey feels that even though the results could have been better, his team is playing well and is on the verge of taking off. “I expect that with the number of returning starters and key additions to keep doing a great job,” Mackey said. “We just need to turn those efforts into results.” The season opener was a match at

They were able to capitalize on opportunities and we weren’t.” The teams exchanged early goals with Gabi Hollinger giving Hempfield a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute of the match. The Knights came away with a 2-1 victory thanks to goals by Deck and Hollinger and four key saves by goalie Brynn Axe. “From the start of the game we were all over them, creating numerous chances,” Mackey explained. “Their keeper came up with some great saves that kept the game close.” Saturday morning’s match at Governor Mifflin was another one-goal result. The Mustangs galloped away with a 2-1 victory with Deck providing an assist on Jessica Weinoldt’s goal for Hempfield. “We allowed an early goal on a corner kick,” said Mackey. “We responded and tied it. But they had a goal in the second half off another set piece. “I tell the girls that the difference in a game could be those set pieces,” added the coach. “We need to defend them more consistently - they’re bound to happen during the course of the game. “We haven’t had a ton of them for us on the attacking end,” he continued. “But it’s just as important

to capitalize on them when we do.” TENNIS Hempfield had a pair of L-L League matches in girls’ tennis action last week. The Conestoga Valley topped the Knights 5-2 on Tuesday followed by a non-league loss to Holidaysburg the following day. McCaskey and Hempfield battled in a Section One clash on Thursday, resulting in a 7-0 Hempfield win. Against McCaskey, the twosome of Amanda Hagino and Brighid Cantwell proved to be formidable in an 8-1 first doubles win. Tierney Cantwell teamed up with Grace Lehman on an 8-0 win while Karlin McHugh and Joanna Newton came away with an 8-3 third doubles win. Hagino won her first singles match 6-0, 6-0. Those were the results of Lehman’s second singles match and Brighid Cantwell’s win in number three singles. Tierney Cantwell won 6-1, 1-0 at fourth singles. Hempfield improved to 1-3 on the year (1-1 in league). In the Holidaysburg match, Lehman won 7-6, 3-6 10-8 while Hagino won 6-0, 6-0. Tierney Cantwell and Sarah Shaub came up short in a 6-2, 6-4 final at

Brighid and Tierney Cantwell played a tough second doubles before bowing out in an 8-5 final. That was the final score in third doubles with a tough effort by Shaub and Karlin McHugh. The Knights’ Jake Hess finished seventh with a 47. Schaffer carded a 40 while Marten and Dunn finished with scores of 41 and 42. The week opened with a 3-0 loss to Manheim Township. The Knights

As summer winds down and the weather cools off, that means that soup will be making its way back onto the dinner table. Perhaps even better news for soup fans is that an opportunity to let someone else do the stirring and simmering is on the horizon as St. James Lutheran Church in Columbia prepares for its annual autumn soup sale. This year’s soup and bake sale is set to take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, at the church, 655 S. 10th St., Columbia. Folks are invited to preorder quarts of soup by calling 717-684-5135 or 717-684-2096. The varieties of soup on the menu will be cream of crab, chicken corn, ham and bean, zesty Italian, beef barley, and vegetable beef. Attendees do not need to bring their own containers. Church member and resident chef Peg Shenberger, along with a dedicated crew of volunteers from the church, will once again prepare hundreds of quarts of soup for the community. Cream of crab and chicken corn are perennial bestsellers, but Shenberger said

Hempfield United Methodist Church (HUMC), 3050 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, will offer “Daughters of the King and Sons of the King,” monthly emotional healing, soul restoration, and prayer gatherings where men and women meet at separate times. All sessions will meet in the HUMC Prayer Room from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. Sessions for women will be held on Sundays, Sept. 16, Oct. 14, Nov. 4 and Dec. 9. Sessions for men will meet on Sundays, Sept. 30, Oct. 28, Nov. 11, and Dec. 23. The one-hour sessions, designed for those in need of wholeness, are free and open to the public. No registration is required. The sessions will include a brief learning component based on finding one’s identity as a child of Christ - not as an orphan, but an heir. Other concepts presented during the sessions include worthiness over worthlessness, forgiveness, and self-love. Core human emotional needs will be discussed, along with what happens when these needs are unmet. Teachings focus on deep soul work, and a spiritual component centers on restoration through Christ. Each session will include a healing prayer and a brief time for sharing. Brenda Coffin, HUMC minister of spiritual care and counseling, will lead the programs. Coffin is a licensed therapist, professional certified coach, and spiritual director. She earned a Masters of Social Science degree from Bryn Mawr College in clinical social work and is a graduate of the Institute for Life Coach Training. Coffin completed her two-year Certification in Formational Prayer and Inner Healing through the Institute of Formational Counseling at Ashland Theological Seminary. Coffin received a certificate in Spiritual Deepening and Contemplative Leadership through Oasis Ministries for Spiritual Development. HUMC will also offer spiritual direction sessions this fall. Spiritual direction is a God-centered, spiritual process in which participants are provided the sacred space to seek God’s presence, listen deeply to His voice and discern

14 - MERCHANDISER - Hempfield Edition - September 12, 2018

Medicare Information Sessions Planned Individuals are invited to attend an information session for the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period to receive valuable information to assist persons in making a wellinformed decision about their health and drug coverage. Medicare Advantage Plans and Part D Prescription Drug Plans are allowed to change the amounts of their plan deductibles, co-pays, and total out-of-pocket expenses, as well as their drug formularies each year, which is why Medicare strongly recommends that beneficiaries compare their current plan against other plans available for 2019. The information sessions are for people already on Medicare and enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan or Prescription Drug plan. Space is limited and registration is required. To register, readers may call Lancaster County Office of Aging at 717-299-7979, 800-801-3070, or by email aging@co.lancaster.pa.us. Sessions will take place at the following locations: Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 10:30 a.m. at Millersville Senior Center, St. Paul Lutheran Church, 222 N. George St., Millersville; Tuesday, Sept. 18, at 10 a.m. Lancaster Neighborhood Senior Center, 33 E. Farnum St., Lancaster; Monday, Sept. 24, at 10 a.m. at Lititz Senior Center, Lititz United Methodist Church, 201 E. Market St., Lititz; Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 6 p.m. at Manheim Township Library, 595 Granite Run Road, Lancaster; Thursday, Sept. 27, at 10:45 a.m. at Lancaster Recreation Senior Center, 525 Fairview Ave., Lancaster; Friday, Oct. 5, at 10:30 a.m. at Columbia Senior Center, Columbia United Methodist Church, 510 Walnut St., Columbia; and Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 10:30 a.m. at Next Gen Senior Center, 184 S. Lime St., Quarryville. The Medicare Open Enrollment

period will run from Monday, Oct. 15, through Friday, Dec. 7. Medicare beneficiaries will have the chance to get personalized help from APPRISE Medicare counselors at numerous locations during the Open Enrollment Period this year. APPRISE Counselors offer impartial assistance to Medicare beneficiaries so they can receive the most comprehensive healthcare and prescription coverage possible at the best price possible. They also screen beneficiaries to determine eligibility for several benefit programs that can help with the costs of Medicare and prescription coverage. Those who are already in a Medicare Advantage Plan or a Part D Prescription Drug Plan can make an appointment to meet with an APPRISE counselor during the Open Enrollment Period by contacting Lancaster County Office of Aging at 717-299-7979 or 800-801-3070 or emailing aging@co.lancaster.pa.us. When Amber Pavalko of Stevens signed on back in February to organize unite@night, an event that raises funds for CSF (Chiari and Syringomyelia Foundation), she had no idea what her future held. Pavalko has been fighting Chiari malformation, a syndrome that is associated with a variety of other physical problems, and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) and syringomyelia since 2013. “I saw that there wasn’t (a fundraising event for CSF) here, so I wanted to do that, said Pavalko. “That was before I needed four surgeries. Pavalko has emerged from those surgeries feeling better than she had in years, allowing her more energy to plan the unite@night Lancaster CSF Walk for 2018, set for Friday, Sept. 21, at the Kiwanis Pavilion at the Manheim Township Community Park, 209 Petersburg Road, Lancaster. Activities will begin at 6 p.m., and the walk will begin at 7:30 p.m. Pavalko has endeavored to keep this year’s event simple. The event will feature a walk and prizes and giveaways including gift cards and gift baskets. Food that will be available for purchase will include hot dogs, soft pretzels, and beverages. CSF is an organization founded to advance knowledge of Chiari, syringomyelia, and other related disorders. Chiari is generally a congenital condition in which the size of the back of the skull crowds neurological tissues. In this condition, the cerebellum can interfere with the flow of cerebrospinal fluid to flow into the spinal canal. Syringomyelia occurs when a syrinx, caused by a buildup of spinal fluid, forms in the spinal cord. This condition can stretch and damage nerve fibers. EDS is a connective tissue disorder caused by genetic changes in the tissues that stabilize and support joints and organs. The

Amber Pavalko of Stevens is organizing unite@night, an event that raises funds for CSF (Chiari and Syringomyelia Foundation), on Friday, Sept. 21, at the Kiwanis Pavilion at the Manheim Township Community Park. unite@night events are designed to provide education about Chiari and related syndromes while raising funds for research to aid those who are afflicted. Pavalko hopes to raise $5,000 with this year’s event. Pavalko has had 11 neurosurgeries, along with a number of other procedures and hospitalizations, since first being diagnosed. She said that she is now feeling the best she has been since she began experiencing symptoms after giving birth to her daughter, Addie, in 2013. “I have two shunts now, said Pavalko, who added that the unusual system was installed by Dr. Kenneth Liu, a vascular neurosurgeon now based at Hershey. The shunt system has greatly reduced the intracranial hypertension caused by having too much spinal fluid. Before Liu operated, Pavalko was experiencing a number of symptoms, including a continual headache from the pressure of the fluid. “My leg was still dragging, and my hand was shaking before I had those four surgeries, explained Pavalko. “I

couldn’t see well enough to not crash into a wall, (but) now I can see again, and I can drive short distances. Pavalko said that she is thankful for doctors like Liu who are willing to use creativity and try new technologies to treat conditions such as Chiari, EDS, and related problems. “I wouldn’t be living my life with my daughter right now if he didn’t take chances on people like me who are atypical, she said. “That’s what I am grateful for. That’s what gives me hope. Pavalko is a trained drug rehabilitation counselor, but she has not worked in her chosen field for some time. A year ago, she became involved in launching Celebrate Recovery, a cooperative effort between several New Holland churches and organizations. More information about CSF may be found at http://www.csf info.org.
