Recovery Day Lancaster, an annual family-friendly festival that celebrates recovery from addiction, will take place on Saturday, Sept. 17, at Buchanan Park, Race and Buchanan avenues, Lancaster. The day will include a variety of activities - the Walk for Recovery, children’s games and crafts, music, holistic health demonstrations, inspirational speakers, and Lancaster County’s largest Unity Circle - along with the second annual 5K Run for Recovery, a vegan meal lunch option, and the involvement of Lancaster County’s special courts for veterans and addiction treatment.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. with an opening ceremony and the traditional Unity Circle, followed by the 5K Run for Recovery, which will start at the Buchanan Park side of Franklin & Marshall College campus. A Walk for Recovery, with a shorter route, will begin at the same time.

The Lancaster County Recovery Alliance organizes the day in cooperation with the 521 Club, a Lancaster sober club. The 521 Club coordinates the event’s Recovery Rocks! Concert, where Octavia Blues Band, known for its blues rock and roll style, will be the featured attraction.

Visitors may stroll the park until 2 p.m. to visit information tables to learn about local and regional resources for addiction recovery, including support groups, treatment options, family supports, and holistic health modalities like acupuncture, therapeutic movement, massage, and yoga. Children’s games and other interactive activities will also be available.

Lunch tickets are available for purchase for an all-youcan-eat barbecue prepared by Bellys BBQ and Burritos with fixings or a boxed vegan lunch. Children under age 7 may eat for free.

Participants are welcome to bring their own picnic lunch if they wish, as well as blankets, chairs, and lawn games. This is a dog-friendly event, so dogs are also welcome.

Volunteers are still needed for the event to help with setup, registration, the Walk for Recovery, cleanup, and other tasks. Contact Karlee at karlee.shambaugh@gmail.co m to express an interest in volunteering.

To sign up to run the 5K, learn more about Recovery Day and its sponsors, or order lunch tickets, visit www. lancastercountyrecovery.com.

When you attend the Pig Iron Fest & Car Show, not only will you enjoy a day of family fun, but you’ll also be giving a nod to the region’s history.

“Many may not know, but ‘pig iron’ refers to the castiron ingots produced by the Marietta iron furnaces in the 19th century,” explained Marcus Snow, president of the Donegal Area Rotary Club, which is hosting the event. “Molten iron was poured into ingot molds, which branched off of a central vein of iron. The ingots looked like little piglets feeding off of the mother pig, and so the nickname ‘pig iron’ took hold. The early iron industry built Marietta, and the fest honors that history.”

The Pig Iron Fest & Car Show will be held on Saturday, Sept. 24, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Community Bible Church, 331 Anderson Ferry Road, Marietta. The car show is open to a wide variety of cars, Snow said, as well as motorcycles and trucks. “Most cars are classic or modified, but we have seen an uptick in newer vehicles and bikes.” The festival will feature food vendors, live music from Tim Rinard and Heath Hardin, giveaways and a kid zone. “The kid zone will include pumpkin decorating, games and a hayride,” Snow commented.

This is a new venue for the annual event, which was held for many years at the park along Furnace Road in Marietta, next to the MusselmanVesta Iron Furnace Center. “The park was redeveloped for the Northwest River Trail, and while the improvements are lovely, they prevent the area from being used for events,” Snow explained. “Simply put, the large, open spaces needed for larger events are no longer there. A move was needed to accommodate the fest’s space needs.”

The move will not dampen the event’s spirit or its focus on history, Snow said. “Even though we are separated from the furnace ruins, Rivertownes will provide a display of the furnace area along with historic photos from old Marietta,” he stated. “The Vesta building and the ruins will be open for tours throughout the day, and visitors are encouraged to visit the ruins.”

Proceeds from the event will be used to fund projects of the Donegal Area Rotary Club, including supporting local food banks, the historic furnace site, local emergency services and youth leadership programs at Donegal High School.

Snow encourages everyone to come out for the Pig Iron Fest & Car Show, noting that it promises to be a fun and memorable day. “(It’s an) amazing, family-oriented event where everyone leaves happy,” he stated. “Cars, hayrides, food, music, history - a perfect day.”

For more information on the event, visit www.donegal rotary.com. Advance registration is available for the car show for a discount, but registration will also be available at the show.

Lancaster Public Library, 125 N. Duke St., Lancaster, works to direct patrons to resources for maintaining their health and wellness. This is accomplished by partnering with local health care providers who provide library programming and disseminate information on current health topics.

Once a month, nurses from Penn State Health visit the library and offer free, walk-in health screenings. Screenings include cholesterol and blood pressure checks, as well as referrals to local health and social services. Additionally, the nursing team offers informal programming each month. Health screenings take place every second Monday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

As part of National Recovery Month, Lancaster Public Library will host identical overdose awareness and naloxone training events on Monday, Sept. 19, at noon and at 5:30 p.m. A representative from Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health will explain how to detect an opioid overdose and how to use naloxone to reverse an overdose.
