Homestead Village To Hold Three Events By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The first three weekends of October will be busy ones for the residents and staff members of Homestead Village, 1800 Marietta Ave., Lancaster. In conjunction with Lancaster ArtWalk, the second annual Homestead Village Art Fest will be held on Saturday, Oct. 6, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, Oct. 7, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Local artists will display and sell their creations. Pottery and glass-blowing demonstrations will be offered on Oct. 6. A portion of the proceeds from the sales will benefit the Homestead Village endowment fund. This year, children who receive services from Schreiber Pediatric Rehab Center, which is located next to Homestead Village, will be the special guests at Art Fest. Homestead Village
residents have volunteered at the Schreiber Center for a number of years, and inviting the young artists to participate in Art Fest is a new way to continue that relationship and to provide opportunities for youngsters to be active in artistic endeavors. “We have tried to have a component to encourage creativity in kids,” said Homestead Village director of marketing Christina Gallagher. “Last year, we had a toothpick sculpture, and everyone was invited to add a few toothpicks to it.” To showcase an educational component, Homestead Village has invited the STEM truck operated by Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology. The mobile lab travels to area schools to provide hands-on learning in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). On Oct. 7, Art Fest visitors will be able to See Homestead Village pg 10

In association with Wreaths Across America, Boy Scout Troop 64 is seeking sponsors for wreaths that will be laid on the graves of veterans interred at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery on Dec. 15. Boy Scout Troop 64 is again looking for sponsors for wreaths to be placed on veterans’ graves for the holidays. The troop’s efforts in this area started two years ago when the Scouts volunteered to place wreaths on graves at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery
(IGNC) with Wreaths Across America, a national program that acknowledges deceased veterans during the December holiday season. The mission of Wreaths Across America is simple: remember, honor, and teach. The program aims to remember the veterans who served, See Wreaths Across America pg 3

GTGH Fair from pg 1
Wreaths Across America from pg 1 honor their service and sacrifice by placing a wreath on their graves during the holiday season, and teach younger generations about the sacrifices that have been made. The IGNC has more than 38,000 graves. During the wreath-laying ceremony two years ago, members of Troop 64 watched as volunteers read each veteran’s name out loud, placed a wreath on his or her grave, and then saluted. “Standing in the cemetery, realizing all the history and sacrifice that surrounded us, was overwhelming,” recalled assistant scoutmaster Nina Evans. “After emptying all the boxes of wreaths, we noticed that some graves did not get a wreath. Wreaths are privately sponsored, meaning there are only as many wreaths as people sponsor.” Last year, Troop 64 made it a mission to find sponsors for
1,000 wreaths. While the final total was 741, that was several hundred more than expected. “We were excited and humbled by the generosity of our community,” Evans remarked. “But the cemetery was still about 8,000 wreaths short, meaning every grave was not honored with a wreath.” In order to ensure complete coverage, Boy Scout Troop 64 is again seeking wreath sponsors. Volunteers are also welcome to place wreaths during the ceremony that will be held at the cemetery on Saturday, Dec. 15, at noon. To sponsor a wreath, readers may call Evans at 717-5723448 or visit www.wreaths acrossamerica.org/pa0251p. Boy Scout Troop 64 meets at Salem United Church of Christ, 2312 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, every Tuesday at 7 p.m. Boys ages 11 to 18 are welcome to visit or join the troop.

Faith Friendship Ministries in Mountville, said that the ministry cares for low-income individuals with mental health issues in a personal care facility based on the Nehemiah Homes model that offers interdependent living experiences. More information about the organization may be found at www.faithfriendship.org. Beth Horst, who founded The Edible Classroom with Grace Julian, said that they are excited to be working with local schools to create or maintain learning gardens. “ We work to customize a program for the teachers, and everything is hands-on and experiential,” said Horst, who noted that summer programming is offered as well. “From seed to table, (the students) learn how to plant, tend, harvest, and eat the food they have grown,” said Horst. Information about can be found by visiting www.theedibleclassroom.org. GTGH founder Jenn Knepper noted that this year, the fair will be held close to Monday, Dec. 10, which is Human Rights Day. Human Rights Day was first celebrated in 1948, making 2018 the 70th anniversary of the first observance. “We will have a scavenger hunt for the children to find various declarations of the articles for human rights from among the nonprofits at the event,” said Knepper. Participants who complete the scavenger hunt will be eligible to receive a book about human rights. A staffed human rights display will offer information and provide interested parties with the opportunity to ask questions. In addition, fair-trade items and food will be available for purchase, and an educational presentation for children will be included. Lancaster Farm Sanctuary, founded by Jonina Turzi and Sarah Salluzzo, is a nonprofit micro-sanctuary created to advocate for farm animals. “We have a few acres, and we have a few ambassadors for each species,” explained Turzi. “We rescue animals, and we hold public events where humans can interact with the animals and hear their stories.” Turzi noted that the animals at the farm were rescued from abusive or neglectful situations, but they are not available for adoption. She listed two types of chickens, sheep, dairy cows, pygmy goats, a turkey, and several ducks that now live permanently at the sanctuary. More information about the organization may be found at www.lancasterfarmsanctuary.org. Brendan Stengle of Music for Everyone said that the organization has provided Lancaster with thousands of musical moments through its downtown piano program, but what is not as well known is how many grants have been given to local school districts in the dozen years Music for Everyone has existed. “Last year, we gave $112,000 in grants to 13 different school districts,” said Stengle. “As an organization, we have invested more than $1.6 million in direct support for instruments.” Stengle said that the organization is currently purchasing instruments in bulk to stretch its buying power. “Over the next five years, our goal is to repair every school-owned instrument in Lancaster County,” said Stengle. The story of Music for Everyone may be explored by visiting https://musicforeveryone.org. Gwen Didden, director of

What was once a segment of underused pavement beside the playground at Park Elementary School in Columbia has transformed into a thriving garden this year as The Edible Classroom brought students and volunteers together to plant, tend, and harvest fresh food. Grace Julian and Beth Horst, who co-founded The Edible Classroom as a nonprofit organization in March, had been facilitating student gardening programs separately at their children’s elementary schools in the Penn Manor School District for years before they heard about each other’s initiatives and connected. The 42nd annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction will be held at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21 and 22, beginning at 9 a.m. The auction, in cooperation with the Atlantic Northeast and Southern Districts of the Church of the Brethren, began in 1977 and has provided more than $15 million in disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the U.S. and internationally. Funds raised by the auction not only pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims, but also support volunteer disaster relief trips throughout the year. In the past few years, funds and volunteers from the auction have helped immediate relief efforts and long-term cleanup and rebuilding from hurricanes in Florida and Louisiana to a tornado in Campbelltown. The event will include a general auction, a children’s auction, a quilt auction, a themed basket auction, a silent auction, a heifer auction, a coin auction and two pole barn auctions. The division of nursing at Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences held its second annual Dedication of Hands ceremony on Aug. 22. All nursing students were invited to take part in the event, which stresses the significance of a nurse’s hands as symbols of the holistic care nurses provide to a patient’s mind, body and spirit. The Dedication of Hands is a new ceremony for Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences nursing students, replacing the historical tradition of capping ceremonies, during which novice students would receive
their cap prior to attending their first clinical experience and returning students would receive a stripe indicating their program year. During the ceremony, faculty members performed the washing and drying of hands, symbolically uniting faculty and students in the profession of nursing. Faculty member Kay Buchanan and Sage Olnick, Class of 2005, were set to offer keynote remarks during three sessions offered throughout the day. The legacy of nursing care was celebrated through the inclusion of two special guests. Cassie Kohr, a student in the three-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, attended with Mary Coldren Kurian, a 1936 graduate of the school, then the Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing. Now 103 years old, Mary is believed by the college to be its oldest living alumna. Kurian enjoyed a long career at Lancaster General Hospital as a nurse anesthetist, retiring in 1980.
Mary Coldren Kurian (left) displayed the class photo she received from Cassie Kohr (right) as a Christmas gift last year. The photo pictures Kurian’s 1936 class at Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing. Kurian and Kohr were special guests at Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences’ division of nursing’s second annual Dedication of Hands ceremony on Aug. 22. Kohr and Kurian met at Homestead Village in Lancaster, where Kohr works part time and Kurian has lived since 1996. While nursing education and practice have changed dramatically since Kurian entered the field, the two women have bonded over their shared devotion to

Knights’ Hockey Splits With Comets, Buckskins by Ara Grigorian
The Black Knights faced Penn Manor last Monday evening in a field hockey match between Section One rivals. The Comets, coming in unbeaten in Lancaster-Lebanon League play, scored seven times in the first half and remained unbeaten with an 8-1 victory. Hempfield goalie Alexa Pitts, with 26 saves, was resilient against an onslaught that saw 34 shots on goal. Emma DeBerdine recorded one of two hat tricks by the Comets. Gabby Pitts also added a hat trick by the midway mark of the first half, scoring 1:38 into the game and adding two more in less than 13 minutes. Keira Boensch scored the lone goal for the Knights, putting her team on the scoreboard in the second half. Pitts only faced six shots in Wednesday’s home game against Conestoga Valley. And while the offense was again a single goal Kate Ayers, scoring 5:26 into the game - it was all the Knights’ defense needed for this 1-0 win.
CROSS COUNTRY With some tremendous efforts, including third-place finishes by Delaney Minder and Jack Mieszkalski, both Hempfield cross country squads triumphed over Conestoga Valley and Manheim Township in an L-L League race held at Conestoga Valley on Tuesday. In the boys’ race, where Mieszkalski registered a time of 17:34, the Knights edged both opponents by the identical margins of 20-35. In the girls’ race it was Hempfield running past CV 20-41 and holding off Township 23-34. Minder led a quartet of Hempfield runners in that race. Her pace of 21:52 was followed by Gabriella Hollinger’s 21:55, the fifth-place time of 21:57 by Lily Williams and Bella Schwalm’s (21:58) sixth-place finish. “The girls ran with confidence and used a pack technique to break up the CV and Township teams,” explained head coach Curt Rogers. “Delaney, Gaby, Lily and Bella all finished together.” Ella Kielmeyer (22:15) gave Hempfield another top-10 finisher,
claiming 10th place. Paige Harrington (12th, 22:25), and Bronwyn Meldrum (13th, 22:33) kept the momentum in the Knights’ favor. Also placing: Grace Stringer (19th, 23:06), Isabel Smith (23rd, 23:14), Cahsia Page (31st, 23:52), Bella Hollenbach (33rd, 24:02), Hannah Graybill (34th, 24:03) and Diamond Chester (35th, 24:16). Mieszkalski’s 17:34 was the best among a pack of five Hempfield runners. The four who followed him across the finish line were Justin Rittenhouse (17:46), Evan Eshleman (18:01), David Jackson (18:04), and Derek Zeigler (18:08). “Our top runners also ran as a pack virtually the entire race,” said Rogers. “Jack really had a breakout race. Evan Eshleman and David Jackson both ran strong second halves to come in for impressive finishes. “Justin Rittenhouse and Derek Zeigler were solid,” added Rogers. Justin Thomas (17th, 18:59) and Dale Winand (18th, 19:00) along with Grayson Dague (20th, 19:05) made the top-20. Also placing was: Cole Photo by Jeremy Madea Lehman (23rd, 19:31), Casey Deck Hempfield’s Olivia Wenzel reaches to block a pass by Penn Manor’s Rylee Leakway during last Monday’s Section One contest at Hempfield.

MERCHANDISER - Hempfield Edition years and we figured they would be highly-motivated to play us,” Ashley said. Ross again came away with a shutout, this time in a match where the opposition out-shot the Knights 9-7. “They were very organized defensively and overloaded the midfield with extra numbers,” Ashley explained. “But our center midfielders Alex Garcia, Cam Graybill and Nebeyu Bekere did a great job of helping us solve the pressure and to find outlets to our attackers. It helped create scoring chances against their strong defense. “Our defense, on the other hand, and our goalkeeper Brady Ross were able to turn back CV’s pressure late in the match,” Ashley said. “Their biggest threats came in a series of five or six corner kicks and long throw-ins that were dangerous on the slippery turf. “It was our fourth shutout,” he added. The Knights ended the week with a 3-1 defeat of Section One rival Manheim Township. With two goals in the first half, Hempfield held on and improved to 6-0 on the year (2-0 league). “It was a solid win over our neighboring rival who has a very talented side with some veteran players and an improved attack led by 2017 League MVP and all-state player Andrea DiSomma,” said Ashley. In fact, DiSomma scored Township’s lone goal in the 70th minute. DiSomma and the dangerous attacking side Ashley was referring to compiled 10 shots on goal with Ross recording nine saves. Pohl scored twice for Hempfield and Jake Edmonds added a secondhalf goal while Johnson and Doehring provided assists. “Fortunately, an early goal by Eddie Pohl on a beautiful pass by Sam Doehring got us on the board first and gave us some breathing room,” Ashley explained. “This week was a big confidence boost,” he added. “Our fitness and conditioning as well as disciplined play have paid off.” GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL Hempfield improved to 4-0 on the Photo by Jeremy Madea The Black Knights’ Julia Edgar hustles to the ball during season with victories against league Hempfield’s Section One battle with visiting Penn Manor rivals Warwick and Conestoga Valley last week. In both matches, the last Monday. Knights swept their way to victory by (24th, 19:32), Parker Wolfe (25th, 19:49), Owen Jackson (26th, 19:58), Ryan French (27th, 19:59) and Will Yaeger (30th, 20:22. “Many of the runners, on both teams, lowered their times from previous races and are making improvements each time they slide on their racing shoes,” Rogers said. “This is a positive hard-working group.” BOYS’ SOCCER Hempfield stymied Cedar Crest in a Section One soccer match on Monday, limiting the Falcons to only three shots on goal while the Knights’ offense capitalized on four of its scoring opportunities in a 4-0 shutout at Landisville. Brady Ross handled all three of those Crest shots to earn another shutout. On the other side of the pitch, Ryan Hepler gave Hempfield the lead 14 minutes into the match. Jake Suchar made it 2-0 12 minutes later. Eddie Pohl, who registered his fourth assist of the season, made it
3-0 just seven minutes into the second half and Will Hessinger recorded his first goal of the season three minutes before the final whistle blew. “It’s always good to earn a win in the first league match of the season,” said head coach Mark Ashley. “We haven’t played Cedar Crest for several years due to league realignment, so we didn’t know what to expect. Our focus was to stay disciplined, stick to the game plan and execute our possession passing game with as much pace as possible.” Also contributing with assists were Ethan Keital and Cameron Graybill. The victory, which was a make-up match from an originally scheduled August 31 date, improved the Knights’ record to 4-0 (1-0 league). One day later, Drew Johnson’s goal in the 64th minute was all the Knights’ defense needed in this 1-0 win. Emma Bitner distributed 20 assists while Claire Flood came away with four blocks. In a road match against the Warriors, the Knights won 25-10, 25-17, 25-21. Lugo was the leader in kills (eight) and blocks (four). The number 11 was the leading total in assists by Bitner and digs by Cummings. Criste served up six aces. FOOTBALL Hempfield came into Friday night’s game against Warwick facing a Warrior defense that had allowed an average of only 11 points per game. The 2-1 Warriors managed to hold off the Knights in a 27-0 Section One football game at Lititz. One of the Warwick touchdowns came on a 95-yard punt return by Trey Glass, who earlier in the game hauled in a 64-yard touchdown pass from Adam Ricketts for Warwick’s first score. In what was the first Section One game of the season for both teams, Warwick improved to 3-1 overall and Hempfield fell to 1-3. Warwick had another touchdown that came on a big play. Ricketts found Hilton Michael on a 55-yarder in the fourth quarter. Other than that, the Knights’ defense held strong despite Ricketts passing for 342 yards on 15 completions. Hempfield’s Colin Peters passed for 113 yards on nine completions and two interceptions. Tanner Hess came on and completed all six pass attempts for 70 yards. Darien Ressler caught seven passes for 128 yards. Matt Heuston was the leading rusher for the Knights, racking up 59 yards on 19 carries. TENNIS Hempfield improved to 3-1 in the league (5-3 overall) with wins at Penn Manor and Cedar Crest last week. The Knights topped the Comets 4-0 on Tuesday, followed by a 4-3 victory at Cedar Crest the following afternoon. Amanda Hagino pairing up with Grace Lehman at number two doubles proved to be a winning combination as they put away Manor’s duo of Julie Ward and Audrey Jachimowicz 8-0. Hagino came back for a 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Ward at first singles. In first doubles it was Tierney

They led the Township team to a first-place finish with a score of 292, which was 40 strokes ahead of second place Penn Manor. The Knights finished with 362. Jimmy Dunn shot an 88 for Hempfield while Jake Hess (100) and Hannah Thomas (102) rounded out the top scorers on the squad. GIRLS SOCCER Hempfield opened the week with a 1-2 record and two Section One teams on its slate of games. The Knights responded by topping Cedar Crest and Manheim Township in Section One matches for their first league games of the season. The Wilson Bulldogs ended Hempfield’s week with a 1-0 Saturday morning victory at home. In that Saturday game, the Bulldogs’ Jailene DeJesus scored in the 75th minute to break a scoreless tie. The loss dropped the Knights to 3-3 overall. Meg Yoder made five saves for Hempfield. The Knights jumped out to an early lead at Cedar Crest on Kaitlin Deck’s goal 9:07 into the game. Deck also provided an assist. Fellow junior Megan Grube made it 2-0 less than nine minutes into the second half while Johanna Adams, who also had an assist, scored less than four minutes later to make it 3-0. Yoder had two saves as the Falcons actually out-shot the Knights. Adams came through 22 seconds into overtime, scoring off a feed by Deck in the Township game, helping nail down a crucial league victory. Series To Address Opioid Epidemic By Chelsea Peifer
Lancaster County Joining Forces (LCJF), in partnership with Compass Mark and Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, will present a free, three-part series addressing the opioid epidemic in Lancaster County. All sessions are free to attend and will take place on select Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Alliance Church of Elizabethtown, 425 Cloverleaf Road, Elizabethtown. The lecture series will kick off on Sept. 25 with Jack Sodak of Retreat at Lancaster County sharing on “Addiction - A Disease of the Mind and Body.” On Oct. 9, Joel Jakubowski will speak on “How to Help a Loved One Struggling With Drug Use.” The series will conclude on Oct. 23 as Deb McCoy of Compass Mark presents “How to Talk to Children About Drugs.” To register for any or all of the sessions, interested individuals may visit www.lancasterjoiningforces.org. According to Rosemary Search, health promotion specialist with Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, LCJF launched as a community collaborative in 2017 with a primary aim of supporting and coordinating countywide efforts to reduce the number of
deaths from overdoses of heroin and other opioids. LCJF brings key stakeholders and community members together to strengthen existing initiatives across all sectors, identify and address gaps in services and resources, and implement strategies for prevention, intervention, and monitoring. “Opioid-related overdose deaths constitute a serious public health concern across the United States,” stated Search. The United States federal government declared a national public health emergency in October 2017, with Pennsylvania declaring a statewide disaster emergency in January 2018. “Lancaster County is not alone in this crisis, but it displays a higher rate of drug-related overdose deaths than the nationwide average,” said Search, noting that more than 160 Lancastrians died from accidental overdose in 2017. “The opioid crisis is not a problem happening ‘somewhere else,’ nor is it limited to our nation’s cities or among certain socioeconomic populations,” Search emphasized. Lancaster County is not only well-known for things like its agriculture and natural beauty, Search noted, but also for the way that its people come together to address the needs of the
community. “Joining Forces is just the latest example - in this case bringing together dozens of organizations to develop and implement a comprehensive plan for opioid abuse prevention and help for those trapped in addiction,” said Search. LCJF strives to implement a continuum of care with an emphasis on both broad, community-based education and awareness and the promotion of healthy lifestyles, while also connecting people who are experiencing addiction to appropriate treatment and recovery support. Some of the organization’s efforts include producing and distributing more than 93,000 brochures about opioid addiction and how to get help throughout the county and working with schools. LCJF currently offers evidence-based prevention programming in 13 school districts. In the first three months of 2018, Lancaster County’s rate of overdose deaths was down 20 percent from 2017, according to Search. “Early data from April through May suggests that rate of overdose deaths continues to head downward,” said Search. “While it is too soon to say if this is a definite trend, we can say that this coordinated response to our county’s opioid
crisis exemplifies the concern and compassion we all share for the health and wellbeing of our fellow citizens.” Individuals who would like to learn more about hosting a presentation or series of presentations through LCJF may contact Sue Lackmann at 717-544-3284 or selackma@lghealth.org.

Wally Calderon, artistic director with Servant Stage Company, admits that there is an element of preconception in staging “Titanic,” the 1997 musical with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and a book by Peter Stone. “There is no surprise ending,” said Calderon of the musical that has been on his shortlist of shows for some time. Calderon loves the show because of its “character-driven depiction” of the historical events and the stories it tells that draw audience members into the story. “(Audience members grow) attached to the historical figures involved,” said Calderon. “That’s the magic of the show … the power of the story.” Calderon is working with Servant Stage executive director Jonathan Bauer to bring the show to the stage in partnership with Lancaster Bible College (LBC) at the Good Shepherd Chapel, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, for two weekends in September. “Titanic” will run on Fridays, Sept. 21 and 28, at 7 p.m.; Saturdays, Sept. 22 and 29, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and Sundays, Sept. 23 and 30, at 2 and 7 p.m. Calderon noted that the ensemble piece tells many stories rather than one story. “You are hearing every angle of the events that are happening as they’re happening,” he said. “You get a true feel for what it was like in third class and first class and among the officers and for the crew and second class … relationships between couples and what (individual) objectives and agendas are,” said Calderon. “Titanic” has been one of Bauer’s favorites as well. “(The show) swept the Tonys, (winning) best musical, score, book, orchestration,” said Bauer, who added that the show is seldom staged because of its large cast of nearly 70 and its musical requirements. “To do it justice, it has got to have a full orchestra and a minimum of 40 incredible voices,” said Bauer. The show is musically demanding, featuring about 30 musical numbers. “The music is an integral part of the storytelling,” said Calderon. “Every scene is underscored with a theme or (musical) dynamics to make the audience feel what they’re supposed to feel.” Calderon added that the opening number, which is nearly 15 minutes long, is used as an introduction. “You meet the characters. You see the classes board-

Jennifer Cavalcante is a photographer. “I (take pictures) of (wildlife), animals, and people,” explained Cavalcante, as she held a print of flowers so vividly hued the piece resembles a painting. “(This photograph) is printed on watercolor paper, and the paper makes (the colors) really pop,” she said. Cavalcante will be one of nearly 50 professional artists who will take part in the Landis Woods Outdoor Fine Art Show that will be held rain or shine on the Boettcher House Museum grounds on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. An art walk, which will feature about a dozen high school artists, will be open from noon until 3 p.m. on the day of the show. Items that artists and craftspeople will bring to sell at the show will include jewelry, mixed media, abstract art, landscapes, watercolor paintings, and more. The show is billed as a child-friendly and petfriendly event. Artist Paris Llanso, known for her distinctive paintings featuring bright colors and large amounts of oil paint sculpted with a palette knife, will showcase her work including a painting of a birch tree she refers to as her “Skittles tree” because she used all the hues of the fruity candy in the piece. Lisa Madenspacher has turned her interest from goats, which she featured at the 2017 show, to pool, with a painting of oversized brightly colored billiard balls being among the pieces she will bring to the show. “I am continually in-

Saddlebag Riders To Support Wounded Warrior Project By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Nate Brubaker recently joined the Saddlebag Riders, a team of Motorcyclists for Jesus Ministries, after reading a newspaper article about the group. “It said, ‘If you love Jesus and you love motorcycles, come on out,’” Brubaker recalled. “My wife and I will take any opportunity to meet people. She said I need to go do this, and I agreed.” Both Brubaker and his wife, Jessica, are motorcycle enthusiasts, and they have participated in several events hosted by the Saddlebag Riders. They also plan to be part of the next activity, which will be a Wounded Warrior Project fundraising ride on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 2 to 5 p.m. No rain date has been set. Check-in for the ride will open at 1:30 p.m. at Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church of
Creswell, 1165 Letort Road, Conestoga. The group of riders will depart the church at 2 p.m. and stop for ice cream at a local dairy. Road captain John Young has planned the route and will serve as the guide. “We’ll be going through rolling hills, on all small back roads. They will be twisting and winding, but it will be a leisurely ride,” he said. The ride will return to the church at about 3 p.m., where riders and other guests may enjoy a picnic of pulled pork, hot dogs, chips, and beverages in the pavilion. Folks may attend the picnic even if they do not go on the ride. No prices have been set for the ride or the meal, but donations will be accepted for the Wounded Warrior Project. “It’s a passion for a lot of us,” Saddlebag Riders secretary Gail Moore said, explaining why the team is raising money for the

Wounded Warrior Project. “A lot of motorcyclists have been in the military.” Readers are encouraged to let the team know they plan to participate in the event, but advance registration is not required. Folks are also welcome to join the group, which meets at 6 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month at Bethany Church. The Saddlebag Riders like to host events that appeal to the motorcycle community, and they also like to attend events to bridge the gap between motorcycle enthusiasts and the love of Jesus Christ. “We have a passion for motorcycles and people,” remarked team president Chuck Moore. For more information or to let the organizers know of plans to participate in the ride or picnic, readers may contact Chuck at 717224-8790 or chuckmoore903 @gmail.com.
