Students gather for Senior Sunrise

OnAug. 31 at 5:30 a.m., members of the Class of 2024 began to arrive at Hempfield High School (HHS). Classes wouldn’t start for a couple hours, and there was certainly no

football game to attend so early in the day, but groups of seniors still trickled onto the field at Georgelis Law Firm Stadium. As dawn broke, the sun illuminated the campus and the field of students as they looked ahead to their final year of high school.

This is the second year that Senior Sunrise has been held at the stadium. The event was introduced last year by members of the Class of 2023 as a way for classmates to bond with one another, reflect on their journey through high school and kick off their final year at HHS. Although

it meant students would need to sacrifice some sleep by getting out of bed extra early, the event drew a large crowd. The Class of 2024’s steering committee was inspired by the success of the first Senior Sunrise, and it decided to organize its own.

This year, many seniors volunteered to bring breakfast items to share with classmates potluck-style. The steering committee made arrangements for New Holland Coffee Co.’s food truck to offer complimentary refreshments to attendees.

committee will organize a similar event for members of the Class of 2024 to watch the sun set at the same stadium.

“Our vision for Hempfield High School is to create a school people are excited to be a part of,” said HHS principal Bill Brossman. “We have worked with our student organizations and leadership to help them to understand that this is their school, and it is what they make of it.”

“We are so proud of our seniors and all of our HHS students for getting the 2023-24 school year off to a fantastic start.”

More than 270 seniors signed up for Senior Sunrise, and it was also attended by principals, school counselors and faculty chaperones. “This was a time for the class to be together as a group. Just seniors at Hempfield,” said Bill Yoder, adviser for the steering committee. “Aside from graduation and class trips, this was one of the only times that will happen.” In May, the steering

Arts & Culture Series seeks to broaden horizons

What a mundane existence it would be if everything were the same. Not only is variety the spice of life, but also diversity makes the world go round.

In association with Lancaster Bible College, the Trust Performing Arts Center’s ninth Arts & Culture Series is marked by diversity and variety and uniqueness.

The Trust Performing Arts Center recently unveiled its 2023-24 events for the spirited Arts & Culture Series. The 14 performances are a

collection of instrumental music, singing, stage shows and art spread out over a nine-month season that coincides with Lancaster Bible College’s school year.

Ariella Hoover, the interim director of the Trust Performing Arts Center’s Art and Culture Series, said she’s eager to attend the performances. “Besides the variety, I’m a sucker for the vocal arts,” she said. “That’s why I tend towards the a capella. There’s so much collaboration involved, a lot of technique involved. I think Lancaster is in for a treat when it comes to the vocal

This year, HHS’ theme is “Raising the Bar,” which encourages students to push themselves and to exceed expectations. Brossman said the Class of 2024 raised the bar by arranging for a food truck to supply coffee, tea and fruit smoothies. “We are so proud of our seniors and all of our HHS students for getting the 2023-24 school year off to a fantastic start,” Brossman added. “We look forward to seeing all that they are able to accomplish before the sun sets on this year.”

Fixing up the fields

Last year, the Hempfield Youth Association (HYA) launched an initiative to improve the baseball fields located in the community. Establishing a regular maintenance schedule has been on the organization’s agenda for a couple years, but its board members wanted to diversify the fields in addition to making repairs. After applying for several grants, HYA received the necessary resources to begin the process of transforming sandlots into baseball diamonds.

Because HYA does not own the land that its fields are located on, the

next step of the process was to approach property owners and ask for permission to begin construction.

In August, the organization turned

its attention to the Hempfield Fire Department’s baseball field, which is located on West Main Street in Landisville. “The fire department

has been very accommodating and a great partner to us,” said Eli Cox, travel baseball coordinator for HYA. “We showed them the plans, and we were able to get to work right away.”

The organization enlisted the help of volunteers and local contractors to make several improvements, such as replacing the field’s backstop. The old backstop was beginning to lean, prompting concerns that it wouldn’t be effective in preventing baseballs from being hit onto the train tracks that run directly behind the field. The field’s shed was swapped with a larger one to allow for more storage capacity, and an additional backstop was placed for two pitching lanes. Workers are currently erecting a homerun fence around the field, and HYA estimates that the project will be finished by the end of this season.

As HYA continues its improvement of the Hempfield Fire Department field, it has started renovations at various other sandlots in the area. The organization hopes to add dugouts and homerun fences to multiple locations, and it has already re-edged a few fields that were in need of attention. In Rohrerstown, HYA restored two overgrown fields to allow its teams to hold practices and games there.

“Being on a well-kept field gives the kids more pride for where they’re playing,” Cox said. “We also want to allow the players to have unique experiences as they move through the program. Some fields have dugouts and some have homerun fences. Each one could be different.”

Once HYA completes its renovation project, it plans to obtain new fields to support its growing number of players. The organization contacted East Hempfield Township to request a development plan for a vacant proper-

ty on Nolt Road and Church Street. The township approved a plan last month, allowing HYA to apply for future grants to support the construction of multiple sports fields on the land.

HYA’s number of players is the highest it’s been since 2009, and Cox attributes the growth to the efforts of individuals in the organization to build a strong foundation for the baseball program. HYA’s intramural baseball coordinator, Tim Whitmer, has worked to establish his league, and the organization’s baseball committee recently doubled its number of members.

“We’re really excited to be doing good things for the baseball community, and we’re excited about the support we’ve received,” Cox said. For more information, search for “Hempfield Youth Association Baseball” on Facebook.

The Arts & Culture Series launched on Sept. 15 with artwork and a free concert by the recently founded Lancaster Art Song Society at the Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster. The series will conclude with a Lancaster International Piano Festival concert presented by the Elaris Duo with Xun Pan on May 4 at the Trust Performing Arts Center.

“I’m excited about the diversity, just the diversity in the types of events we have this season,” said Hoover. “It’s just got a nice flow. Some of the shows are stops on world tours; some are stops on United States tours. It’s on par with a lot of what other performing art centers do.

I think audiences should expect to be wowed, especially if they come to an event they don’t usually buy a ticket for.”

Also featured in the series will be the Alejandro Brittes Quartet on Oct. 12; an International Piano Festival concert given by Tianxu An on Oct. 28; Soul Sanctuary: Religious Spiritu-

als on Oct. 29; performances of “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” on select dates from Nov. 25 to Dec. 16; the male chorus Chanticleer on Nov. 29; a masterclass dance festival taught by a local choreographer on Jan. 13; a local choreographer’s dance festival and showcase on Jan. 13 and 14; Piercing Word’s performance of “The Gospel of Mark” on March 1 and 2; a performance by soprano Samantha Hankey on March 12; an International Piano Festival concert given by Tanya Gabrielian on March 16; and a concert by the British vocal ensemble Apollo5 on April 5.

“Not only are our spaces beautiful, it’s also excellent artists and unique artists,” said Hoover. “That just makes for a neat experience. I love being able to bring so many wonderful artists straight to the people of Lancaster. It’s about introducing people to different genres.”

For more information on the Trust Performing Arts Center’s Arts & Culture Series or to purchase event tickets, go to www.lancaster trust.com/events/.

Competition is expected to begin at 6:30 p.m., wrapping up with the Hempfield Marching Knights, under the direction of Matthew Ceresini, around 8 p.m. Awards are expected to be presented at 8:30 p.m.

Tickets will be available at the gate. There will be separate prices for adults and for students and seniors.

The Hempfield Band Booster Club will also have food concessions available, including macaroni and cheese, hot dogs and popcorn. Souvenir event programs will also be available for purchase.

All proceeds from Knight of the Bands will benefit the Hempfield Band Booster Club, which supports the Hempfield Marching Knights, Hempfield Indoor Percussion Ensemble (HIPE), Hempfield indoor color guard, JazzONE and several curricular music ensembles. The event will take place on Sunday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m.

Some of the hymns will be selected by the organists and will include special introductions, reharmonizations, and arrangements, and some hymns will be selected by the audience. Participating local organists will include John Zielinski, Jonathan Jones, Margaret Rothacker, Karl Moyer, Bill Rhoades, Greg Gehman, Margaret Marsch, and Joshua Benkendorf. The organ, rebuilt in the 1980s, was originally constructed by the famed organ builder Ernest Skinner in 1929.
