CONSERVATION CONVERSATION

Samantha was born. After learning that Samantha had the 2i version of LGMD, the Brazzos launched a foundation to promote treatments and a cure. In order to raise funds, the family, which lives in the Hempfield School District, has hosted a game night for seven years and held a golf outing for the first time last year. “When we get our cure, we’ll keep doing (the game) night for other causes,” Kelly remarked. Through the two events last year, CureLGMD2i brought in more than $50,000. That money helped the organization give a $60,000 grant to the University

The meeting will be held at the Bachman Center at Homestead Village, 633 Community Way, Lancaster. There is a fee to attend for nonmembers. Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy (LGMD) Awareness Day will be observed on Sunday, Sept. 30, and CureLGMD2i Foundation vice president Kelly Brazzo, who co-founded the organization with her husband, Keith, is excited. “It will be the first time we’re all gathering under one umbrella,” Kelly ex plained. “There are more than 30 types of LGMD, and they’re continuing to be diagnosed.” The Brazzos have gained an incredible knowledge of LGMD in the decade since their daughter

of Massachusetts medical school, which is working with humanized mouse models to test gene therapy. In the past year, Kelly traveled to the school, where she helped to create a 2i steering committee composed of researchers, pharmaceutical developers, and people with 2i from all around the world. The foundation has also given about $140,000 to a clinical trial at Kennedy Krieger. The first human trial of a myostatin inhibitor has produced no negative side effects, but positive impacts have not yet been reported, Kelly said. She added that the foundation is considering See CureLGMD2i Foundation pg 8

Taking Strides Toward A Cure

Church To Host Pet Celebration

There is not much good news when it comes to pancreatic cancer, but the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) is making strides to change that. The national patient advocacy organization has been creating hope in a comprehensive way through research, patient support, community outreach, and advocacy for a cure since it was founded in 1999. “At one time, no one really knew much about pancreatic cancer,” said Lancaster County resident Jill Snyder, whose husband, Aaron Shiley, died from the disease in December 2010. “That has changed in recent years, and today there are so many great resources.” Pancreatic cancer has surpassed breast cancer to become the third-leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States, and the five-year survival rate is still in the single digits at See PanCAN pg 4

Jill Snyder (right) has become an advocate for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network after the death of her husband, Aaron Shiley, from the disease in 2010. Fundraisers for the organization will be held in Lancaster on Oct. 4 and in Philadelphia on Nov. 3.

Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, 3131 Columbia Ave., Lancaster, will host the third annual Community Pet Celebration Day along with a Blessing of the Animals service on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. According to the Rev. Clifton D. Eshbach, pastor of Holy Spirit, the event is a time to celebrate pets and the love they give their human families. “We want to share with our neighbors a fun event that will celebrate the happiness pets provide and to give them a blessing for the coming year,” he said. Eshbach noted that more than 100 people participated in the event with their furry friends last year. The Blessing of the Animals will take place at noon. Throughout the day, animalrelated groups will provide presentations and information about their organizations. Some of the groups slated to attend the event are VisionCorps,

9 percent. Pancreatic cancer is a leading cause of cancer death largely because there are no detection tools to diagnose the disease in its early stages when surgical removal of any tumors is still possible. To improve those odds, PanCAN has launched an initiative, “The Vision of Progress: Double Pancreatic Cancer Survival by 2020,” with the goal of raising $200 million by 2020. With more funding support and focus, progress and patient outcomes can be significantly improved, organizers said. Pancreatic Cancer Month will be observed in November, and PurpleStride Philadelphia will take place on Saturday, Nov. 3, at

Memorial Hall in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia. PurpleStride walks are among the largest sources of funding for PanCAN. Locally, a community night fundraiser will be held on Thursday, Oct. 4, at Isaac’s, 1559 Manheim Pike, Lancaster. From 5 to 9 p.m., a percentage of food and beverage purchases will be donated to efforts for PanCAN. The event has been coordinated by Lancaster County resident Randi Jacobs, a pancreatic cancer survivor and captain of the team Ann’s Dream, which was named for Jacobs’ mother, who passed away from pancreatic cancer at age 74. Meal orders for takeout from the Granite Run eatery may be placed online at www.isaacsrestaurants.com using the coupon code FUND.

Those who dine in between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. are asked to present a fundraiser form to their servers. The forms may be obtained by emailing Jacobs at randistevej@ hotmail.com. Since the death of her husband, Snyder has been an active participant at PanCAN’s annual National Pancreatic Cancer Advocacy Day in Washington, D.C. Held in June, the day offers opportunities for people affected by the disease to meet with their members of Congress to request more funding for medical research. “People need to learn more about pancreatic cancer,” Snyder remarked, emphasizing the importance of clinical trials and research into treatment. “You

should be as educated as possible and learn about all available options if you or one of your family members is diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.” PanCAN maintains the most comprehensive and up-to-date database of pancreatic cancer clinical trials available in the country. The trials are necessary to determine whether new treatments developed in the laboratory will be beneficial to people living with the disease. They also give patients early access to cutting-edge treatments that can lead to progress in research, improved treatment options, and better outcomes. To learn more about pancreatic cancer, clinical trials, and support for patients and their families, readers may visit www.pancan.org.

This September, Historic Salem United Church of Christ (UCC), 324 Walnut St., Columbia, will celebrate its 215th anniversary. According to Parish Life Team members, the church dates back to Sept. 11, 1803, when the Rev. G.C. Muhlenberg, D.D., met with church members from Lancaster County and determined to build a church for the Germanspeaking people of Columbia. The building was completed in 1806, with Lutheran and Reformed congregations meeting on alternate Sundays. “Salem was chosen as a name for the church in 1821, and a formal agreement of joint ownership was drawn up between the two congregations. More details on the many changes that Historic Salem UCC went through as time progressed will be shared during tours of the church. The history tours will be among several activities happening at the church’s 215th anniversary celebration on Saturday,

Sept. 29, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The community is welcome to attend. Live musical entertainment will kick off at 11:15 a.m. with performances by Juliana Schnee, a 22-year-old singer, songwriter, and jazz artist from Lancaster County. JoeNBroz will play at 1:15 p.m. Historic Salem UCC’s music facilitator, Steve Spiese, plays guitar in the band, which is also comprised of Tim Spiese on harmonica and Joe Dilorio on drums. All three musicians rotate on vocals as well. Homemade chicken corn soup and Italian wedding soup, pork barbecue and hamburger barbecue sandwiches, hot dogs, and beverages will be available to purchase, along with a variety of homemade baked goods. Soup may also be purchased by the quart for takeout. A take-home craft project for adults is planned for 1 p.m. The history tours will be led by pastor Mark Harris at 12:45 and 2:15 p.m. Attendees may enter to win giveaways and door prizes,

including themed baskets with items from Columbia-area businesses, throughout the event. Children’s activities will include a variety of carnivalstyle games, face painting, and temporary tattoos. Nominal fees will be charged for the activities, with all proceeds from the event supporting church building improvements and mission donations. The anniversary celebration will continue with a special worship service on Sunday, Sept. 30, at 10:15 a.m.

The Parish Life Team members organizing the celebration include Harris, Hilary Smith, Julie Bigler, and Scott and Denise Bollinger. Smith’s children are at least the fourth generation in her family to attend Historic Salem UCC, as her parents and grandparents were members of the church as well. Smith said it is possible that even her greatgrandparents and other ancestors attended, too. Readers with questions are welcome to call the church at 717-684-6498.

Volleyball Wins Twice, Remains Undefeated by Ara Grigorian

The Black Knights’ 3-0 defeat of Cedar Crest in Thursday night’s Section One girls’ volleyball match at Landisville was Hempfield’s second win of the week. With the win, the Knights improved to 6-0 and to 5-0 in the Lancaster-Lebanon League. The wins came rather smoothly with scores of 25-15, 25-15 and 25-10 Kylie Ulrich brought her A-game to the court, drilling 13 kills against the Falcons, who fell to 5-3 (4-2 league). The Knights also dominated on serves, with three aces each coming courtesy of Megan Criste, Jailene Lugo and Emma Bitner, who also distributed 30 assists. Ashley Weaver led the team in blocks

with three while Gracyn Krawizcki tallied eight digs. Monday’s match at Governor Mifflin had larger margins of victory with Hempfield winning 25-12, 25-8 and 25-15. Lugo came through with eight kills and two blocks. Bitner was on fire from the service line, pouring in eight aces. She also notched 18 assists while Allison Cummings came away with 10 digs. FOOTBALL Hempfield earned a huge victory on Friday night, defeating Section One rival Cedar Crest 38-14. Senior Matt Heuston ran for four touchdowns as the Knights evened their L-L League record to 1-1 and improved to 2-3 overall.

The Knights bounced back from a 27-0 loss the previous week at the hands of Section One rival Warwick. Therefore, evening their L-L League mark was critical at this juncture. “Every victory is now huge after having lost three,” said head coach Ron Zeiber. “Every game becomes a big one and this was a victory we were happy to get.” The turning point may have been Hempfield’s final drive of the first half. All of the Falcons’ 14 points came in the second quarter - a period in which a total of 28 points were scored. The Falcons (3-2, 1-1 league) tied it on a 52-yard touchdown pass from Logan Horn to Brody Dunlop. Hempfield responded on a scoring drive that ended with Heuston’s second TD of the game - a four-yard rushing touchdown. The Falcons evened the score once more and the fans at Hempfield’s Georgis Law Firm Stadium may have been staring at a 14-14 score through the halftime festivities. “Offensively, we were able to complete long drives, keep moving the chains and taking time off the clock,” Zeiber noted. “The twominute drill, where we took it 75 yards and scored right before the

half, was a game changer. It always gives you momentum when you score just before halftime.” In that drive, the Knights scored on Darien Ressler’s touchdown reception as Colin Peters found him in the back of the end zone. The extra point by Curtis Johnson, who was 5-for-5 on the night plus a field goal, made it 21-14 Knights. “Defensively we didn’t allow a point in the second half,” Zeiber noted. “Our defense did an outstanding job. We did get beat on a couple of big plays. But we made them earn it the rest of the game. The defense kept getting the ball back for us.” Meanwhile, Heuston scored two more touchdowns in the second half, sandwiched around Johnson’s 39-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. He finished with a game-high 139 yards rushing on 26 carries. He also caught two passes for 35 yards. The passing game featured Peters completing 16 of his 22 attempts for 150 yards and the touchdown to Ressler, the Knights’ leading receiver with six catches for 45 yards. “Matt is a great athlete,” Zeiber said. “He does a little bit of everything. He has good speed and size. He catches the ball well and is a very

good lacrosse player,” continued the scoreless through two overtime coach. periods to earn a draw. GIRLS’ SOCCER Deck’s hat trick on the day included It was a big week for the Hempfield a penalty kick. The free shot gave the girls’ soccer team. The squad remained unbeaten in league play with a 2-1 victory over Penn Manor and an exciting 3-3 tie at Warwick. Hempfield improved to 4-0-1 in the L-L League. Following a 1-0 loss to Dallastown on Saturday, the Knights fell to 4-4-1 overall. Jessica Winoldt scored the go-ahead goal six minutes into the second half of the Penn Manor game. Kaitlin Deck had given Hempfield a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute of the match. In a tight Section One contest, Meg Yoder’s four saves helped Hempfield hang on. Veterans’ Assistance Posted The Pennsylvania Veterans of Foreign Wars invites veterans of all ages and from all service eras to utilize its Service Officer Network to receive free information and assistance for government benefits including VA healthcare, compensation, pension, education and dependent benefits. Surviving spouses can also use these VFW Service Officers to learn about their eligibility for VA benefits. A VFW state service officer is now available for scheduled appointments at Lititz VFW Post 1463 on Mondays from noon to 5 p.m. To make an appointment, readers may call 717-234-7927 and specify Lititz as their preferred appointment location. The service is made possible by Pennsylvania Act 66. The addition of Lititz as a VFW service officer outreach location was chosen to reduce travel time and expense for veterans living in rural areas, who might otherwise drive farther to receive assistance with a VA claim. Veterans do not have to be a VFW member to receive benefit filing assistance, but they must provide a DD-214 discharge form and possibly other information about their military service in order to enter a VA claim. Veterans requesting that the VFW becomes

involved in their claim will need to sign a form declaring the VFW as their power of attorney. Veterans who have already signed a power of attorney with another organization should either follow up with that organization or sign over their power of attorney to the VFW. Vietnam veterans should know that the VA has defined some health conditions as being “presumptive” for being caused by exposure to the defoliant Agent Orange. Veterans with these health conditions may be eligible for benefits (there are qualifying issues with each condition): AL amyloidosis, chronic B-cell leukemias, chloracne, diabetes mellitus Type 2, Hodgkin’s disease, ischemic heart disease, multiple myeloma, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Parkinson’s disease, peripheral neuropathy/ early-onset, porphyria cu- PLACE YOUR CLASSIFIED AD ONLINE AT WWW.EPCCLASSIFIEDS.COM tanea tarda, prostate cancer, respiratory cancers, and soft tissue sarcomas.
