Enjoy Ethiopian cuisine, help those in need

When Wegayhu Ketema was a child living with her grandmother in Harar, Ethiopia, she became seriously ill. An infection spread to Ketema’s ear, but there were no doctors or clinics nearby from which to seek treatment. Her grandmother’s only option was to take Ketema to the local church, where the priest tried to cure her with holy water. Ketema’s hearing was permanently damaged as a result of inadequate treatment.

Since she was 8 years old, Ketema dreamt of becoming a nurse to help her community in Harar. Inspired by her experiences growing up there, Ketema made her dream a reality by becoming a licensed nurse in 1985. She moved several times before coming to the United States in 1989. Ketema has now lived in Lancaster for almost 35 years, and she works

as a traveling nurse at facilities across the county. In 2015, she decided to turn her attention toward the many needs of the people of Harar by co-founding the nonprofit organization Siloam Ethiopia.

Through Siloam Ethiopia, Ketema helped to establish a free medical clinic in Harar, and she regularly takes trips to assist with its day-to-day operations and to deliver supplies.

Siloam Ethiopia has also completed projects near the clinic such as building wells for clean water access. Three years ago, the organization assisted with founding Emmanuel Church in Harar. “The good Lord has been so gracious to bring us to this country that has given us so much. We have to remember the people we left behind,” Ketema said.

To sustain its continuous work in Harar, Siloam Ethiopia will host a fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 7, at Ethiopian Evangelical Church,

Circle Legacy Center begins Native American program series

For the first time in more than three years, Circle Legacy Center is offering a series of programs on the second Friday of every month. The goal of the series is to educate the community on the culture, history and traditions of Native Americans, as well as to raise awareness of modern issues. Each program will be hosted from 6 to 9 p.m. at Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster, 328 W. Orange St., and participants

are encouraged to bring a food item to share during a potluck dinner. Utensils, plates and cups will be provided.

Each program will highlight a different topic that pertains to Native American communities. The series kicked off with a meeting on Sept. 8 to welcome new participants and returning members, and Circle Legacy Center shared updates about its upcoming projects and plans for the remainder of the year. The organization also provided information on See Circle Legacy pg 5

atakilt wat, a cabbage and potato stew; and kik alicha, a stew with split peas. Each dish will be served with injera, an Ethiopian flatbread. To reserve a meal for pick up, contact Ketema by calling 717-669-0930 or by emailing wmketema@gmail.com.

The proceeds from the fundraiser

will help Siloam Ethiopia to cover the clinic’s operating expenses, such as paying rent and compensating its staff. Old traditions, new generations

Every fall, schools across the country gear up for a week of activities to celebrate homecoming. Almost every school has specific traditions that are unique to its history and student body, but each one shares a common goal of boosting school spirit in a festive way. At Hempfield High School, the new generation of students is drawing inspiration from the past to celebrate the present.

For the first time in more than 20 years, the Hempfield Homecoming Parade will be held on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 10 a.m. The parade will begin on Stanley Avenue in See Homecoming pg 2

The tradition of the homecoming parade was resurrected by members of Hempfield High School’s Student Council, who first began discussing the idea before the end of the last school year. The students discovered pictures of the parade from when it was held in the ’80s, and although the school’s marching band has held a similar event in recent years, they wanted to bring back the former parade in all its glory. “We saw old pictures from the parade and thought, ‘Hey, that’s actually a really cool idea,’” said senior Avery Landis, president of Student Council at Hempfield High School. “I think the student body is really interested to see what it’s going to be like.”

The resurrection of the

parade isn’t the only way Hempfield High School will celebrate homecoming. On Thursday, Oct. 5, the annual Fall Fling will be held during the school day. The event serves as a pep rally for students, and various school clubs will offer activities. After school is dismissed, student council will host a cookout for students to attend as they wait for the start of the powderpuff game in the evening. Junior and senior girls will face off at 5 p.m. at Georgelis Law Firm Stadium, and the homecoming king will be crowned at halftime. On Friday, Oct. 6, the homecoming queen ceremony will take place at halftime during the Black Knights’ football game, which will begin at 7 p.m. The girls selected to the homecoming court are Liliana Smith, Kylie Smith, Avery Landis, Faith Siegrist and Caroline Herr. The court also includes Hunchin Rana, Stephen Pitts, Deyvid Palepale, Kena Bekere and Seth Wiggins.

“I’m just excited to see everything our students are putting together for each other,” said Hempfield High School principal Bill Brossman. “They are owning their high school experience, and as educators that’s what we want them to be about. We’re very proud of them and we’re happy to support them in their accomplishments.”

Paintings presented to police department

Charles F. Snyder Funeral Homes presented three original Tom Hermansader paintings to the Lancaster City Bureau of Police on Sept. 12.

The paintings portray the architecture of the three Lancaster City Police Stations, which were previously located on Grant Street and East Chestnut Street, and its current location on West Chestnut Street.

Due to health complications, Ketema has been unable to visit the clinic this year. Last December, she traveled to Harar with a team of volunteers to treat patients, distribute eyeglasses and assist at a local girls’ orphanage. Ketema’s husband, Demeke Getahun, visited the clinic in July. Hope.Inspire.Love. talks the talk, walks the walk

Fundraisers couldn’t generate financial resources without generous donors, and nonprofits couldn’t perform their philanthropic work without fundraisers.

Four months after presenting its Hope for Freedom Gala, Hope.Inspire.Love. will conduct the second of its two yearly fundraisers, Freedom Walk, on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Musser Park, 135 N. Lime St., Lancaster. Hope.Inspire.Love is in its eighth year of battling human trafficking and sexual exploitation, and the event is designed to raise money for the fight against human trafficking and to raise the awareness of its effects.

“Fundraising is vital. It’s the glue,” said Hope.Inspire.Love CEO and president Amy Thurston, who founded the organization with her husband, Steve. “Nonprofits rely on the community. We need their support financially. The survivors know the community is behind their healing, and we’re in the backyard of the community. I literally am sitting here every day thinking, ‘We could do so much if we had more funding.’”

The Freedom Walk is a 2mile walk carried out silently through the streets of Lancaster city, beginning and ending in Musser Park. In 2022, the walk raised $20,000 for the mission of Hope.Inspire.Love., and this year, Thurston is hoping to raise that and $5,000 more.

“We walk on the sidewalk, in single file, in silence,” said Thurston. “There’s something bold about silence. Actions don’t need words. That’s why we do it.”

“It’s a next step for people to learn about our organization,” Thurston continued. “People are walking for people who have been enslaved. It’s beautiful because we have survivors who attend. It says, ‘We’re all in this fight together. Let’s do better.’”

Founded in 2019, the Freedom Walk will have its fourth iteration this year. In 2022, some 200 individuals took part in the event. Thurston would like to see that number rise to 250 or 300 participants this time around.

Since its inception, the Freedom Walk has included live music at the park to enhance its atmosphere and a survivors’ tent for people to learn firsthand about the devastating effects of human trafficking.

“The reality is that (human trafficking) has affected all of us in the community in different ways,” said Thurston. “It takes a community to fight it. What we’ve realized is that a lot of people want to help. The Freedom Walk allows people to serve. This Freedom Walk has power.”

Hope.Inspire.Love. seeks to combat sex trafficking and sexual exploitation through trauma-informed mentorship, outreach and awareness and prevention education.

“Our (mission) isn’t a short-term relationship; it’s

a long-term solution,”

Thurston said. “We started with prevention and education. But I said, ‘We’ve got to do more.’ As we’ve evolved, we’ve added more staff. We developed our mentoring

program and our job skills training. I think we’ve grown more than we expected.”

For additional information about the Freedom Walk or to register, go to www.hope inspirelove.org/freedomwalk.

Every Child Matters, a movement that seeks to raise awareness of the abuse of Native American children in residential schools. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also referred to as Orange Shirt Day, was observed on Saturday, Sept. 30. Every year, observers of the holiday don orange clothing to represent the forced assimilation of indigenous peoples.

On Oct. 13, Circle Legacy Center will discuss Indigenous Peoples Day, which is observed by many communities on Oct. 9 instead of Columbus Day. The meeting

will feature a presentation on past and present Native American groups in Lancaster.

Circle Legacy Center’s program on Nov. 10 will offer Native American dishes for participants to enjoy as they discuss current economic, social and health issues of indigenous people. The meeting will also include a discussion on National Native American Heritage Month, which is annually designated as the month of November. On Dec. 8, Circle Legacy Center will host guest speaker Dave Costarella, who will share information on his project to help people experiencing

homelessness in Lancaster city.

Circle Legacy Center was founded in 2007 by Victoria Valentine of Millersville, who also serves as the organization’s executive director. “I started out as an environmentalist, and I was always interested in Native American culture,” Valentine said. “As I learned more about it, I had a vision to make a bridge between the community and the Native American people, not only to educate people but to raise awareness of their needs.”

Although Circle Legacy Center has no physical headquar-

ters, it remains actively involved with various local organizations. The nonprofit frequently participates in events at Blue Rock Heritage Center in Washington Boro and the Conestoga Area Historical Society. Some Circle Legacy Center board members are also active in similar groups such as the Carlisle Indian School Project, another nonprofit based in Conestoga. The project aims to build a heritage center and museum near the site of the original boarding school in Carlisle. For more information, search for “Circle Legacy Center” on Facebook.

Sample food from around the world at an International Gourmet Gala

The members of St. Peter Roman Catholic Church in Columbia come from a vast array of backgrounds and nationalities. Now they’re inviting you to sample cuisine from their countries while enjoying live music, fellowship and fun at an International Gourmet Gala. The event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 4, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the St. Peter Parish Center, Second and Union streets, Columbia.

St. Peter was once known as the “Irish Parish,” reflecting the ethnicity of its founders, who built the first church in 1828. The Potato Famine in their mother country continued to bring Irish immigrants to the United States and to Columbia for decades, where many found work on the Philadelphia-Columbia Railroad. Irish priests from St. Mary’s Church in Lancaster were sent to Columbia one Sunday a month to serve members of St. Peter. On the remaining Sundays, parishioners rode to Lancaster on horseback to attend Mass.

Waves of immigration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries brought German and Italian Catholics, followed by newcomers from all over the world, and the parish of St. Peter became a true melting pot of cultures.

“Years ago, the parish did individual nights representing different ethnicities from our church,” recalled Carole Bitts, who is helping to organize the gala. “This year, spontaneously, several people came up with the idea of doing it all in

one night.”

Sylvia Garner, who is also on the gala committee, said committee members approached people in the parish who were known for their cooking, including the family that makes Loreto’s marinara sauce and Josie McCleary, the church secretary, who makes Filipino egg rolls.

Foods from Mediterranean countries, Northern Europe, the British Isles, India, Asia, Africa, the Philippines and the Caribbean will be served. Young adults of the parish will serve the buffet style meal and lend a hand with cleanup.

The menu will include hors d’oeuvres of German soft pretzels and Mexican guacamole with chips; Italian pasta; lumpiang Shanghai Filipino egg rolls; Polish piero-

gies and kielbasa; Caribbean haricots verts aux amandes (green beans almondine); Mediterranean stuffed grape leaves and hummus; Irish colcannon; Indian naan; and Blue Smoke Soul Food. Desserts will include French petit fours and German kuchen.

Live music will be performed by Al Schultz and other musicians, featuring members of the church choir as soloists. “We’ll have music from many of the countries represented, and we’ll have room for dancing,” Bitts said. Garner envisions the social hall full of people for the gala.

“We are encouraging all community members to come, not just Catholics and not just members of our parish,” she said. “It’s going to be great food because we have some wonderful chefs in our parish.

Seating is limited for the gala, and reservations are required by Sunday, Oct. 15. For more information or to make a reservation, call the parish office at 717-684-7070.

Attendees will hear classical selections, including works by Beethoven, Mozart and Chopin, as well as pieces from Broadway shows, such as “Les Misérables,” “Kiss Me, Kate” and “Fiddler on the Roof.” Local professionals from Sight & Sound Theatres, Red Accordion Studios, Piercing Word, and Reji Woods Productions have been involved in the process, and many will perform. The nearly 80-minute program will also feature students from the academy.

The cabaret is a capstone project of academy senior Candace Mbugua. Having been a student of the academy for 12 years, Mbugua wanted to give back by raising funds for the school. Mbugua’s time and training at the academy have inspired her to pursue higher education with the goal of having a career in the performing arts.

The Lancaster Academy for the Performing Arts is in its 28th year of training students in the performing arts. Classes include choirs, orchestra, and ensembles for strings, percussion, and guitar, in addition to fine arts and theater classes. The mission of the organization is to pursue musical excellence for the glory of God and to be a

blessing to the community.

Proceeds from the cabaret will go toward new sound equipment and venue rental associated with the academy’s spring musical productions. The fundraising goal is $10,000. No tickets are required, and admission is by donation. Concessions will be available for purchase.

For more information about the Lancaster Academy for the Performing Arts or to donate, visit www.lancast eracademy.org.
