Take A (Final?) Seat At Potpie Dinner “If folks enjoy eating in, they may want to make sure they get here this time for nostalgia’s sake; the Lions are looking at making the event a takeoutonly event in the future,” said Mountville Lions Club member Eric Weaver, speaking about the annual fall potpie dinner the group will hold on Saturday, Oct. 20. “It’s been harder and harder to get helpers each year, and getting away from the dining room operation may be the only way the Lions can continue to make the event work,” Weaver explained. “Although they love the community spirit that shines when people break bread together, the number of volunteers needed to run a dining room and takeout operation is getting to be more than the club can handle.” The Lions Club will prepare and serve the meal at St. Paul’s United Methodist

Church, 100 W. Main St., Mountville. Takeout containers of potpie and coleslaw will be available at noon, and seating for the family-style dinner will begin at 3 p.m. Weaver noted that the Lions will serve potpie until it is finished, which is usually around 6 p.m. The menu will include all-you-can-eat potpie, coleslaw, pepper cabbage, peas, rolls, coffee, iced tea, and water. Separate prices for admission have been set for children and for adults and may be paid at the door. Homemade desserts, including pies and cakes, will be offered for an additional cost. Also at the event, folks may purchase brooms made locally by Amish crafters. The brooms are an artifact from when a club-supported occupational training program for blind and vision-impaired people focused on broom-making, among other skills. See Potpie Dinner pg 3

Pam Barnard collected a yellow tile printed with a Chinese character, looked at the row of similar tiles in front of her, consulted a sheet of paper at her side to see if she had any worthwhile combinations, and set it down in the discard area. “It’s quite challenging,” Barnard said of the game of mah jongg. “It requires a lot of focus. But I’m up for the Women who participated in an introductory challenge; it’s intriguing.” Barnard learned to play session on mah jongg in preparation for the mah jongg at the home of second annual Mah Jongg Madness event set Natalie Freedman, an for Oct. 21 included (from left) Carol aficionado of the rummy-like Woodman, Pam Barnard, Natalie Freedman, game and organizer of Mah Audrey Reedy, and Marie Donnelly. Heart Walk from pg 1

HEMPFIELD EDITION

More than 1,500 walkers turned out for the 2018 Lancaster Heart Walk at the Barnstormers’ home stadium in downtown Lancaster on Sept. 15. Participants raised a total of $248,000 for the American Heart Association, a voluntary organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. The fundraising total is expected to climb as additional donations are accepted until November. Before departing on the walk through the city and the Franklin & Marshall College campus, walkers had the opportunity to learn about heart health, receive free blood pressure screenings, try out the new American Heart Association blood pressure kiosk sponsored by the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation located at the stadium, learn hands-only CPR, try healthy snacks, and take photos at a photo booth. Local news anchor and master of ceremonies Susan Shapiro and Heart Walk chair Carrie Willets, president of WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital, welcomed walkers during the

beautification, cleanup, and grave marker repairs. Under the direction of conservator Robert Mosko, volunteers will be introduced to the baseline knowledge, theory, techniques, and materials that underpin gravestone preservation. Volunteers will receive free hands-on training in cleaning headstones, repair practices, and resetting fallen monuments. Enthusiasts will also be introduced to basic grave marker documentation, cleaning solutions and work practices. People of all skill levels may participate. The daily training sessions will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Oct. 22, Mosko will lead a full-day lecture and classroom instruction addressing cemetery safety, subsidence and erosion, landscape restoration and maintenance, types and styles of gravestones, weathering and deterioration processes, and condition assessments and documentation practices. On Tuesday, Oct. 23, and Oct. 24, Mosko will guide participants through the handling,

moving, and resetting of historic gravestones including basic engineering and rigging, raising and lifting sensitive markers, setting techniques, and setting materials and compounds. Assisting Mosko in the workshop will be Robert Myers from Grave Keepers, located in Jeannette. Volunteers are encouraged to bring work gloves and wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes suitable for varying weather conditions. Participants are also responsible for providing their own meals, lodging, and transportation to and from Lancaster Cemetery. Mosko has worked in more than 78 cemeteries across the country, restoring, repairing, and preserving more than 7,000 gravestones and monuments. Participants may register for one, two, or all three workshop days. For more information and to make reservations, readers may contact Jerry Smoker at jsmoker@msn.com or call 717490-2001.

opening ceremonies and introduced the Heinaman family of West Hempfield Township. Ryan and Nicole Heinaman shared the story of their 6-yearold son’s heart defect diagnosis. Ryan and Nicole expected to receive great news about their healthy baby boy during their 20week ultrasound. When doctors discovered that the baby had a two-vessel cord, they suggested that the Heinamans get more frequent ultrasounds. During an ultrasound at seven months, doctors detected something wrong with their baby’s heart and referred them for additional testing by a pediatric cardiologist. The results were inconclusive, but doctors wanted to follow up after the baby was born. Tyler Heinaman was born in June 2012 and seemed to be healthy and normal. The Heinamans followed up with the pediatric cardiologist two weeks later for testing. This time, doctors could see what was wrong with Tyler’s heart. Tyler was born with a condition called coarctation of the aorta, a narrowing of the blood vessel that carries oxygenated blood to

the rest of the body. His heart defect was severe, and he needed surgery to correct it right away. He was flown to Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del., where he received surgery five days later. Tyler will still need to be monitored by cardiologists to ensure that the surgical repairs adapt to his growing heart and body, but today he can live a normal life with no restrictions. At the Heart Walk, Tyler and his family led the walkers out of the stadium to kick off the walk. Walkers returned to the stadium to learn the winners of second annual bicycle giveaway drawing sponsored by UPMC Pinnacle, featuring 12 bikes donated by the hospital’s physicians, staff and teams. The walk was preceded by a high-energy warmup led by Wayne Mutata. Dollars raised will support heart disease and stroke research, health care quality improvement, advocacy, prevention and education. The Heart Walk is part of the American Heart Association’s Healthy For Good movement to encourage sustainable healthy lifestyle changes. For more information about the Heart Walk, readers may visit

“There was not much we could do in regards to layout.” “We used every square inch,” added LCCC member Craig Foreman of Landisville. To accommodate the expected turnout at this year’s show, the service lot has been assigned as overflow, and Mooney said club members will park their vehicles there so guests may park in the primary lot. Additionally, LCCC members will empty the showroom, which will be the site of the “ladies’ oasis” and a display of door prizes and silent auction items. The oasis will feature massages by students at the Mount Joy campus of the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center as well as several vendors. LCCC member Susanna Mooney, who is married to Clyde, related that the ven-

dors typically include a makeup supplier and other vendors of home and beauty products. The show will be held rain or shine. Clyde expressed his hope that if it rains, folks will still come out to participate in the silent auction and door prize drawing. The proceeds from the auction will help the LCCC with its support of Clare House of Lancaster and the LCCC Christmas Angels program. The club will also contribute to the Chip Miller Amyloidosis Foundation (CMAF). Miller was the cofounder of Carlisle Events, which hosts Corvettes at Carlisle; he died from amyloidosis in 2004. The LCCC regularly sells tickets for a drawing for a new Corvette at the Carlisle fete, typically resulting in about $50,000 for

Tracey Strohecker, Annie Friedrichs, and other members of the Lancaster Christian Women’s Club first heard of a Stonecroft Ministries event called Story Marks two years ago, and the women were intrigued. “Story Marks (is about) women and the stories behind their tattoos,” explained Strohecker. “It will be a one-night gallery experience featuring photographs of local women and the stories of their hearts.” On Thursday, Oct. 18, area women are invited to the Barn at Overlook Commons, 605 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to view the photos of up to 30 local women and to hear the testimonies of up to 10 women and how their tattoos are an expression of their Christian journeys. Light fare will be served. The photographs that will be displayed were taken by photographer Sally Krueger, who donated the photo sessions to the event and who will gift them to

those who volunteered to be photographed. Friedrichs said that at the heart of the event is a passion to reach young women who do not know Jesus. “This is about meeting a girl where she is and as she is with support and encouragement,” said Friedrichs. For Strohecker, the 24 months since she first heard of Story Marks has represented a personal journey that highlights a significant change in her outlook. When she first heard of Story Marks, she was skeptical of the idea. “The Lord began to work in my heart about being judgmental,” said Strohecker, who said that a sermon her pastor preached in the fall of 2017 on the subject of prejudices also affected her. “The Lord really spoke to me,” said Strohecker, who remembered Story Marks at that time. “I felt so convicted and passionate about this,” she added, noting that during a February vacation to Florida she decided to get a tattoo of two intertwining hearts and the words “Endless Love” to honor her marriage of more than 50 years. The transformation of Strohecker’s viewpoint has given her greater understanding for the reasons many women have tat-

toos. “I always thought it was about rebellion,” said Strohecker. “That was my perception. Once I understood there is a story behind them, I could see there’s a significant meaning.” One goal of the event is to convey the message that tattoos are more than skin deep. “When you put something permanently on your body, it’s not on your body, it’s on your heart,” said Friedrichs. “It’s tattooed on to who you are.” Another aim is to break down stereotypes and focus on the universal. “ We want to literally share our stories to support and encourage one another,” explained Friedrichs. “We are coming together as sisters to share the love of Christ with a sense of community.” She hopes to change perceptions in the process. “This is about women loving and needing each other (because) we were put in this world to help each other and reach out to each other,” she said. “There’s no judgment or criticism (because) we all need Jesus.” Other members of the Stonecroft Ministries Lancaster Christian Women’s Club hub who are organizing the event include Linda Johnston, Rebekah Christens-Persaud, Marlene Hall, and Joleen Yunginger.

There is a nominal cost to attend the event. Readers who would like to attend may register at https://story-marks-lancaster.eventbrite.com. Individuals who have questions about the event may call 717-701-9767.

Renee Heller is one of up to 30 women whose photographs will be on display at Story Marks, an exhibit that will explore the stories of women whose tattoos have played an important part in their spiritual lives. The event will be held on Thursday, Oct. 18, at the Barn at Overlook Commons, 605 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Mort Recognized For Philanthropy National Philanthropy Day is observed by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) to celebrate the contributions of those who are active in the philanthropic community. First held by AFP in 1986, National Philanthropy Day is now recognized by more than 250 AFP chapters across North American and internationally. Ann Myers from the Partnership for Better Health and Mary Beth Kerekes from the National Civil War Museum co-chaired the celebration on Sept. 26 to honor four people as AFP Central Pennsylvania Chapter’s National Philanthropy Day 2018 awardees. Each winner received a framed

print of the Rockville Bridge painting by David Lenker. Marion Mort, age 102, was named Philanthropist of the Year. The honor recognizes an individual with a proven record of exceptional generosity who, through direct financial support, demonstrates outstanding civic and charitable responsibility and whose generosity encourages others to take philanthropic roles in the community. Mort, founder of Lancaster Paper Supply Co., shares his success with organizations that are dedicated to making the world a better place. Mort has been a generous philanthropist, making significant contributions to Shriners Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, Elks National Foundation, Lions Club International Foundation, VisionCorps Foundation, and the Kay Masci Fund for Early Childhood Education, while also supporting programs for children who are visually impaired and disadvantaged. His wife, Louise, passed away in 2013. He has two children, along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Peg Hambrick and Jane Kohn were named Volunteer Fundraisers of the Year. The award honors

persons who demonstrate outstanding skills in coordinating and motivating groups of volunteers for fundraising projects for the benefit of charitable institutions. Hambrick, nominated by Sophie Penny, is chair of the State College Land Trust GreenBuild Project and GreenBuild Campaign. Kohn, nominated by Beth Mihmet, is chief development officer of Hospice of Central Pennsylvania and assisted with the renovation of Caroline’s

Home, a hospice residence. Janice Black was named the Professional Fundraiser of the Year. The honor recognizes a fundraising executive who practices the profession in an exemplary way. Black, president and CEO of The Foundation for Enhancing Communities (TFEC) since 1994, has created options for philanthropists to target their giving and make a stronger impact, building the assets of TFEC to nearly $84 million.

Marion Mort (second from right) was honored as Philanthropist of the Year by the Association of Fundraising Professionals at a ceremony on Sept. 26.

sessions at her home in East Hempfield Township in order to help newcomers to the game prepare for the second annual event. At a recent session, Carol Woodman coached Barnard and other women through the intricate setup and play of the game. “I’m a total addict,” Woodman admitted as she sorted tiles. “It’s never the same (game) twice, and it’s social. Like today, I get to meet all these new people.” Woodman learned to play mah jongg as a younger person, and she now uses her grandmother’s vintage set from the 1920s or ’30s. The game relies on a combination of luck and skill, and people of all skill levels are welcome at Mah Jongg Madness. There really is no age limit for playing the game, although literacy skills are important, as each year, an official list of tile combinations is published. The list for 2018 will be used at the Oct. 21 event. Mah Jongg Madness will not

be a tournament; rather, folks may play at their leisure, and there will be veteran players available to provide assistance as needed. A cost has been set for participation, and a catered lunch will be included in the fee. There will also be opportunities to win prize drawings. Proceeds from Mah Jongg Madness will benefit the scholarship fund for the Edward Freedman Congregational Retreat. On alternating years, the members of Congregation Shaarai Shomayim spend a weekend away at a Maryland retreat center for fellowship, education, and celebration. The next retreat will be held in 2019, and the scholarship fund will help to ensure that everyone interested may attend the retreat, regardless of their finances. Registration for Mah Jongg Madness is required by Monday, Oct. 15. Folks may visit https://goo.gl/Fik7sn to register or make a donation, or they may contact Freedman at natjl@aol.com or 717-618-8054.

Resurrection Catholic School, 521 E. Orange St., Lancaster, will host an open house featuring animals on Thursday, Oct. 18. In recognition of St. Francis, the public is invited to a 1 p.m. assembly called “Paws, Claws, Scales and Tails” that will teach how animals survive in the wild. Topics will include foraging, eating, swimming, escaping from predators, and defending against predators. “Fun With Our Animal Friends” will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. and will feature animal projects by students in kindergarten through third grade. Resurrection strives to create balance so children may learn, socially interact and get what they need to prepare them for success in future grades. Students are educated in the Catholic faith with daily religion classes, morning and dismissal prayers, and weekly Masses. To register for the assembly, readers may call the school at 717-392-3083.

Two more Knights were in the top-15 with Justin Thomas (12th, 19:05) and Owen Jackson (13th, 19:12). BOYS’ SOCCER There is no question that the boys’ soccer teams in Section One of the Lancaster-Lebanon League are very close in the standings and are fighting for the two playoff spots. After the first week of October, Warwick was holding a 6-2-0 record against league foes while Hempfield, Manheim Township and Conestoga Valley hold the identical record of 5-3-0. “It’s a really tight section this Photo by Mona Steinhauer year,” Hempfield head coach Mark Hempfield girls (from left) Paige Harrington, Bella Hollenback, Bronwyn Meldrum, Ella Kielmeyer and Marissa Martin run as a Ashley agreed. “We anticipated that. pack in last Tuesday’s tri-meet with Solanco and host McCaskey. Conestoga Valley and Warwick.” The Black Knights have Warwick and CV on their schedule with two more games remaining on the regular season slate. Township topped Hempfield on Tuesday night by a 2-1 score, evening the head-to-head battle though Hempfield won the first meeting 3-1. Ayden Lee scored 25 minutes into the match and Andrea DiSomma doubled that lead with a goal in the 37th minute, scoring on an assist by Colton Pierson. Hempfield did not score until the 78th minute on a penalty kick. “Drew Johnson was taken down from behind in the penalty box,” Ashley explained. “He buried the shot. “In the final seconds, we had a header that hit the crossbar and a corner, but their keeper made the saves,” Ashley added. “The flow of the game was interesting,” continued the coach. “They scored twice in the first half. We didn’t feel good about the way we played in the first half. We had gotten away from our possession passing game and how we split the field. Their keeper was also making some nice saves.” Quinn McCarty made three saves for Township while Tristen Green grabbed four saves for Hempfield. Hempfield had 18 shots on goal

and scored five goals in each half of Thursday afternoon’s home game, defeating Penn Manor 10-1. They had edged the Comets 3-2 in their meeting earlier in the season. The odd thing was that the Comets had a 1-0 lead in this game. Alex Behmer scored 13 minutes in. “We knew they had played us really tough the first time,” Ashley said. “We knew it was important to take them seriously. They haven’t won a

lot, but they’ve played in a lot of close games. “And they scored first on us,” he added. “That was the catalyst for us to get into our excellent passing and the plays that resulted in some of the best goals we’ve scored this season.” Johnson scored twice as did Cameron Graybill and Ryan Hepler, who also notched two assists. Jake Suchar, Jake Edmonds and Nebyu Bekere each added second-half goals.

MERCHANDISER - Hempfield Edition Assists came courtesy of Nicolas O’Neil, Sam Doehring, George Claxton, Ethan Keital and Suchar. “Normally, we would have gotten in some reserves in the second half,” Ashley said. “We decided to keep doing what we did in the first half and the guys continued to do a good job of executing. “When the reserves did go in in the final 30 minutes, they did a good job of continuing to shut them down,” he said. Saturday morning’s non-league game ended in a 3-0 win for the Knights. Green and Grant Doehring each made five saves in shutting out Central Dauphin while Sam Doehring scored two of Hempfield’s three firsthalf goals. Eddie Pohl had a goal and an assist while Suchar chipped in with an assist. Ashley was asked about his approach with the players in terms of addressing goal differences being a possible tiebreaker for league playoff qualification. “We probably won’t talk about it much,” he replied. “We’ll focus on doing the things we do well and as long as we do our best, those things take care of themselves. I may play more attacking players later in the game, or if we’re up 2-0 play more

defensive players to keep that goal differential.” GIRLS VOLLEYBALL The Knights posted three more wins, including a pair of L-L League matches, improving their record to 10-0 (8-0 league). The opponents were Dallastown, Penn Manor and Conestoga Valley. In the D-town match, the Knights won the opening set 26-24 and tamed the Wildcats 25-17 and 25-18 for a 3-0 win. Jailene Lugo was one of the leaders, registering 10 kills. Claire Flood led the team with five aces, two blocks and eight digs, which tied Allison Cummings for the team lead. Emma Bitner distributed 24 assists. Following decisive wins of 25-9 and 25-15, the Knights edged Penn Manor 26-24 on Tuesday night. It was the second of three 3-0 wins. Lugo was outstanding with 17 kills while Bitner put up 29 assists. Cummings added nine digs while Kylie Ulrich served up four aces and Megan Criste registered three blocks. The three sets at CV were by wider margins - 25-9, 25-12 and 25-12. Lugo delivered seven kills and two blocks. Bitner dished out 25 assists and Cummings once again tallied

eight digs. Serving a pair of aces was Gracyn Krazwicski. TENNIS At the L-L League Flight Tournament at Conestoga Valley on Friday, the Hempfield duo of Grace Lehman and Amanda Hagino did not disappoint, winning their Flight One doubles match 6-0, 6-1. Also, at Flight Two doubles, Brighid Cantwell and Tierney Cantwell advanced with an 8-1 win while Karlin McHugh and Joanna Newton advanced to the second round of the Flight Three Doubles, winning a tough 9-8 (4) set over Lancaster Country Day’s Ana Taubmann and Scarlett Taylor. In singles action, Hagino won her first match 6-0, 6-0 and triumphed by the same scores in straight sets at the quarterfinals. Lehman, meanwhile, prevailed by

the same 6-0, 6-0 scores to open her Flight Two singles competition, defeating Donegal’s Lyla Naqvi. She then advanced to the semis with a win over Eliana Shenk of Manheim Central Brighid Cantwell was a Flight Three singles winner (6-2, 6-1), going on to win the quarterfinals match 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 over a strong Kylie Armstrong of Cocalico. Tierney Cantwell moved on at Flight Four singles with a 6-1, 6-1 victory and won at the quarterfinals 7-5, 7-5. FOOTBALL In a key Section One gridiron clash, the Knights’ comeback bid fell short in the second half as the Wilson Bulldogs came away with a 26-16 victory. The Knights, who fell to 3-4 (1-2 league) had pulled to within three points in the third quar-

ter. Bulldogs quarterback Anthony Futrick threw his second touchdown pass of the game to give his team some much-needed cushion. With Manheim Township handing Warwick its first Section One loss of the year, Wilson (5-2) improved to 3-0 in league play and took sole possession of first place. Jack Wagner’s field goal in the first quarter was all the scoring in the opening period. The Bulldogs’ place kicker added another field goal in the second stanza helping his team take a 13-3 lead into the locker room. Curtis Johnson’s 20-yard field goal put the Knights on the board before halftime. Hempfield finally reached the end zone, doing so on Darien Ressler’s 20-yard TD catch from Colin Peters and again on Matt Heuston’s rushing touchdown from three yards out - both in the third period. Peters ran for 62 yards but Heuston was held to only 22 yards on 11 carries. The passing game netted only 81 yards with Peters completing eight passes. Jackson Shand caught three passes for 26 yards and Josh Kreider caught two for 32 yards. Hempfield’s final stretch of games to close out the regular season includes only Section One games against McCaskey, Penn Manor and Township. GIRLS’ SOCCER The race for Section One supremacy in girls’ soccer is also a tight battle. Hempfield ended the week at 7-0-1 (9-4-1 overall) with Conestoga Valley at 5-1-2 and in second place. The Knights’ regular season will conclude on October 10 with a match at CV. As for the week in games, the Knights topped Manheim Township

2-1 on Tuesday and handled Penn Manor 4-1 on Thursday. Gabi Hollinger’s overtime goal was a heartbreaker for Township. In a close contest, Lauren Weaver put the Knights up 1-0 14 minutes into the game and the Streaks tied it 14 minutes into the second half on Gabi Brown’s goal (Caroline Wood assist). Meg Yoder was strong and steady in goal, making six saves into overtime for the Knights. Johnna Adams had an assist for Hempfield. Against Penn Manor, the Knights scored two early goals and held on for the win. Adams opened the scoring seven minutes into the match. One minute later, Jessica Weinoldt made it 2-0. Juniors Megan Grube and Kaitlin Deck each added a second-half goal while on the defensive side Yoder made three key saves. FIELD HOCKEY It was a week in which the Black Knights scored only one goal. However, they did not lose either of the two L-L League field hockey games played. On Tuesday, they played to a scoreless draw at Conestoga Valley. Two nights later, Eden Marco’s goal early in the second half and four saves by Alex Pitts helped Hempfield top Cedar Crest 1-0. Kate Ayers provided the assist. Hempfield improved to 4-6-1 in the section and 5-9-1 overall. GOLF Sawyer Marten shot a 3-over-par 75 on the first day of competition at Briarwood East Golf Course as golfers teed it up for the District Three ClassAAA Championships on Thursday and Friday. On his second day, Marten shot an 81 and made the cut for the state eastern regional qualifiers.

The NYSB was founded in 1887 to bring attention to the early ministry of The Salvation Army in the United States. Since that time, the group, one of the nation’s oldest continuous musical ensembles, has traveled the world playing brass pieces. The band has worked with and produced numerous musical acts. Both Philip Smith, former principal trumpet of the New York

Philharmonic, and Stephen Bulla, chief arranger for the U.S. Marine Band, are counted as NYSB alumni. The band has premiered pieces from composers including Eric Ball, Erik Leidzen, and James Curnow, and it has worked with composers such as Emil Soderstrom, Wilfred Heaton, and Emmy Award-winning Bruce Broughton. Guest vocalists to sing with the NYSB have included the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, Michael W. Smith, Sara Groves, Elton John, and others. While visiting the Lancaster area, the NYSB will partake in many different community outreaches, including a free concert for the Woodcrest Villa Retirement

Community. The band will also participate in an instructional clinic and mentoring time with regional Salvation Army youths and will give one-on-one guest instruction in the fields of brass, percussion, music theory, and vocals. The public is also invited to attend a worship service led by the NYSB at The Salvation Army Lancaster Corps, 131 S. Queen St., Lancaster, on Sunday, Oct. 21, at 9:45 a.m. The Salvation Army Lancaster Corps serves thousands in the Lancaster area each year through a wide variety of services and ministries. Each Sunday a brass band of approximately 15 to 20 members led by retired Lt. Col. Albert Avery leads the worship service and is supported by a choir led by retired Maj. Charlotte Wilson. By Chelsea Peifer

The Marine Corps League of Lancaster County Detachment 294 and Auxiliary of Lancaster County will present the second annual Semper Fi 5K Run/Walk and Kids’ Chesty’s Challenge Fun Race on Saturday, Nov. 10. Runners and walkers of all ages are invited to participate in the race, which will step off promptly at 8 a.m. from Columbia High School (CHS), 901 Ironville Pike, Columbia. Race day check-in and registration will open at 6:30 a.m. Interested individuals may register at www.pretzelcitysports.com/on line-registration through Wednesday, Nov. 7. The deadline to register at a discounted rate and be guaranteed a race T-shirt is Monday, Oct. 15. Beyond that date, T-shirts will be available to registrants while supplies last. Participants will follow a route down Ironville Pike and through Columbia Borough streets to the finish line at Locust and Bank streets. Organizers describe the point-to-point course as a very fast, downhill route. Distance mile markers will be provided at every half-mile, and a water and aid station will be set up at the halfway point. Post-race festivities, as well as the Kids’ Chesty’s Challenge Fun

Race, will take place at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, located near the 5K finish line. A disc jockey will play music, and free snacks and beverages will be available to participants. A shuttle bus service will be available at Columbia Crossing to transport runners back to CHS for their vehicles after the race. Organizers will also offer a free baggage claim service so participants may check a bag or clothing item before the race that they would like to have waiting for them at the finish line. Children ages 3 to 12 may take part in the quarter-mile Chesty’s Challenge Fun Race, named after the Marine Corps’ bulldog mascot. Race-day registration will open at 7:30 a.m. at Columbia Crossing, and the run will take off at 9 a.m. Those who register online by Oct. 15 will receive a T-shirt, medal, and goodie bag. Youths who register on race day will receive a medal, and T-shirts will be available while supplies last. An awards ceremony, including time to honor and recognize veterans for their service and sacrifice, will begin at approximately 9 a.m. at Columbia Crossing. Cash prizes will be given to the overall male and female winners, as well as to the first-place masters male and

female finishers (age 50 and up). The top three finishers in various five-year age range categories will receive awards, too. Proceeds from the event will support outreach programs for veterans in the greater Lancaster County area. Mike Mastriania, commandant for the Marine Corps League of Lancaster County Detachment 294, noted that the organization offers assistance to homeless veterans of Lancaster County who have served in any branch of the military. For example, the group recently helped a Gulf War veteran and his family to secure an apartment and purchase furniture. The Marine Corps League also works with organizations such as Transitional Living Center (TLC) Lancaster and United Veterans Beacon House. Marine Corps League members provide a meal and bingo event once a month for veterans at the Lebanon Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, along with collecting clothes, books, and suitcases for individuals at both the Coatesville and Lebanon VA medical centers. Historical Society Plans Presentation The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society will sponsor a presentation about the story of African-Americans in Lancaster on Monday, Oct. 15, at 6:30 p.m. at James Street Mennonite Church, 323 W. James St., Lancaster. Dr. Leroy Hopkins will share stories about African-Americans’ role and involvement in Lancaster from the beginning of the city and county in the early 1700s through challenges faced in the 20th century, as well as the fight for civil rights. Hopkins, a Lancaster native, earned a Bachelor of Arts in German and Russian from Millersville College and a Ph.D. in Germanic languages and literatures at Harvard University. Hopkins is a professor emeritus of German at Millersville University, where he taught from 1979 to 2015. He has written and published articles on local AfricanAmerican history. Currently, Hopkins serves on the board of LancasterHistory.org and the Crispus Attucks Community Center. He is also president of the African American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania. The event is open to the public. A freewill offering will be received. The lecture is one of more than 40 Lancaster Roots 2018 events.
