Landisville PTO slates Fit Walk fundraiser

The Landisville PTO will host its annual Fit Walk fundraiser on Friday, Oct. 13. The event will occur at the quad between the Landisville Primary Center (LPC) and the Landisville Intermediate Center (LIC) on Mumma Drive in Landisville from 9:15 a.m. until the end of the school day. During the Fit Walk, parents and guardians of students at both elementary schools are invited to walk through the quad. The grades will participate in the fundraiser in 45-minute segments as the students take turns walking through the grass field between the schools. The fundraiser will also include music and entertainment provided by a DJ. Teachers and school staff members traditionally dress in costumes to walk alongside the youngsters as they cross the quad. This year, the Fit Walk fundraiser will be Minions-themed, and educators will wear clothing to resemble the fictional henchmen.

Participating students and teachers receive a unique T-shirt for the Fit Walk every year. This year, the Landisville PTO introduced a contest to allow students to submit designs for the shirt. Although each shirt must display the name of the event and the current year as well as the names of the Fit Walk’s sponsors on the back, students were encouraged to get creative to create a design for the front. Each student will receive a shirt with a color that is unique to his or her specific class; teachers will often reuse the Fit Walk shirts to keep track of their students during school assemblies and field trips throughout the year.

The Fit Walk is the Landisville PTO’s largest annual fundraiser, and it is the only event where 100% of the monetary donations benefit LPC and LIC. This year, the PTOhas set a $25,000 fundraising goal. While other elementary schools in Hempfield School District have an average of 500 students, the total number of students served by the See Fit Walk pg 3

First online fundraiser for Kingdom causes planned

Since the fall of 2022, David Kieffer, president of the FaithfulGive board, has been preparing for the organization’s first online g iving event to benefit organizations with a Christian mission that are active in Lancaster County. “We prayed and thought and designed and listened for a year,” said Kieffer of FaithfulGive’s five-member board and its organizational team. “Mostly we listened to what would serve various nonprofit leaders.”

To introduce the event, a breakfast will be held on Monday, Oct. 16,at Westminister Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, beginning at 7:30 a.m. In addition, a short celebration picnic will be held on Oct. 17 at 5 p.m. at Long’s Park. “There will be worship, celebration, and announcing prizes,”

The Amos Herr Foundation will sponsor a free lecture by Jack Brubaker at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 19, at Woodcrest Villa, 2001 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. Brubaker, a Manor Township resident who writes “The Scribbler” column, as well as articles for other local publications, will discuss the life and work of author Phebe Gibbons. Phebe is credited with popularizing Pennsylvania Dutch culturein the 19th century and subsequently laying the foundation for tourism in

Lancaster County through her book “Pennsylvania Dutch and Other Essays.”

Before Phebe published “Pennsylvania Dutch and Other Essays” in 1872, many Americans had no knowledge of Amish and Mennonite communities. The author was born in a Quaker community in Philadelphia in the early 19th century, but she came to Lancaster after marrying Joseph Gibbonsof Bird-inHand. As a member of the Quaker community, Phebe had much in common with the plain manner of living that was practiced by her

To combat the growing risk of battery fires, the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) has announced the launch of a public education campaign to encourage proper disposal of rechargeable batteries.

Kieffer pointed out that the first day of the event will not be focused on giving, although the platform will be available. “It’s really a day of prayer,” he said, noting that prayer guides will be distributed to various churches that are helping FaithfulGive to spread the word. “(The guide) will enable people to learn about the organizations and pray for them,” Kieffer said.

Kieffer said that the decision to start FaithfulGive was motivated by the many Kingdom-minded organizations located in the county. “This is really a movement of people who live locally who recognize that Lancaster has a rich heritage of biblically faithful nonprofit organizations

Fit Walk frompg 1

Landisville PTO is greater than 1,200, which results in the group’s requiring a higher budget. The high quantity of students in the area is one of the main reasons the two schools were divided between students from kindergarten to third grade and kids from fourth to sixth grade.

The proceeds from the Fit Walk will help the Landisville PTO pay for school supplies, teacher appreciation events, student awards and field trips throughout the year. This year, the organization’s budget has been slightly increased to cover the cost of several

improvements being made to the playgrounds at LPC and LIC. “For the most part, we try to cover the cost of school supplies so parents don’t have to worry about it at the beginning of the year,” said April Custer, a volunteer and executive board member of the Landisville PTO. The organizations also operates vending machines at both LPC and LIC, which are stocked with books for children to acquire as a reward for good behavior.

Celebrating the Albatwitch

He’s short, covered in hair and very elusive. He’s the Albatwitch, known as a “baby Bigfoot,” and you’ll have a chance to celebrate him at the 10th annual Albatwitch Day.

The event will be held at Columbia River Park, 41 Walnut St., from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14.

The day will feature live music, vendors, food, guest speakers and more.

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

“We’ve got some great speakers coming in,” said Rick Fisher, who is organizing the festival with Chris Vera. “We’ve got Dave Spinks from West Virginia, who has appeared on a number of TV shows, including ‘Terror in the Woods.’ We have Sean ‘The Forkchop’ Forker, who does a popular podcast called ‘Sasquatch Experience,’ and we have Matt Lake, who wrote ‘Weird Pennsylvania’ and other books. We also have Rissa Miller, who will be talking about the history of witches.”

Five bands will perform during the day - Dillweed, Travelers, Sound Method, Heroes 4 Ransom and Tang Moon - and both daytime and evening trolley rides through town will be offered.

“During the day, the tours will run every 45 minutes, so you can get tickets at the event,” Fisher said. Participants

on the daytime tours are given apples to throw into the woods, tempting the Albatwitch to reveal himself in search of his favorite snack.

Fisher recommends purchasing tickets ahead of time for the night-time haunted trolley tour rides, which sell out quickly. “When we do the ghost trolley tour, Chris and I take flashlights along, and we look to see if any of the apples were eaten,” he said.

More than 80 vendors will be featured at Albatwitch Day as well, Vera said. “What I always think of when I’m getting vendors is, ‘A husband might be a Bigfoot guy, but his wife may hate Bigfoot.’ I want to be sure she’s happy, too.” Vendors will sell items includ-

ing handmade jewelry, Halloween décor and Bigfoot crafts.

“It’s a mixture of anything and everything,” Vera said. “It’s like an off-the-wall craft show, and everything is homemade.”

Local nonprofits will have booths set up at the festival, including Rivertown Theatre Productions, Raven Ridge Wildlife Center and the Indian Steps Museum. Lancaster PA Ghostbusters will be on hand, as will Michael Mitchel from New York, who will bring his K9 Ghostbuster, a golden retriever who dresses in a Ghostbusters outfit.

Local churches, including St. Paul Episcopal and Holy Trinity, will have food stands, and several local restaurants will

have themed specials. Starview Brews will feature a special drink for the event, and Home Goodies & Coffee will sell an Albatwitch breakfast sandwich. The dungeons below the Columbia Market House, at 15 S. Third St., will be open for free tours before the festival begins, Fisher said, adding, “Come to the market, take a dungeon tour and get some breakfast before you head to the event.”

Proceeds from Albatwitch Day will benefit the Columbia Historic Preservation Society, located at 21 N. Second St. For more information or to reserve trolley tickets, visit www.albatwitchday.com or follow “Albatwitch Day” on Facebook.

Truck Convoy raises funds for Make-A-Wish

Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley announced that the 34th annual Mother’s Day Truck Convoy raised $553,838, the

second-highest total in the event’s history. The funds raised at the Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will help to grant 75% of the wishes in the

Susquehanna Valley this year.

Make-A-Wish recently hosted its annual Convoy Celebration at The Farm at Eagles Ridge, where the new top 30 and grand driver lists were announced. The top 30 drivers in this year’s convoy raised $251,738, with Michael Kindt coming in first for the third straight year.

Up until 2017, raising $1,000 was enough to qualify for the Top 30. Once raising “a grand” no longer guaranteed a Top 30 spot, the Grand Driver designation was created. Every driver that raises more than $1,000 but does not qualify in the Top 30 earns the Grand Driver title. This year, 21 drivers earned the Grand Driver title and raised $32,369.

During the 2023 Mother’s Day Truck Convoy, 395 trucks drove in the 26-mile convoy through Lancaster County and 50 Make-A-Wish kids rode along.

At the Convoy Celebration,

the convoy committee was recognized for its dedication and commitment to make the 34th annual Mother’s Day Truck Convoy a success. Also in attendance were the four Wish Kid Ambassadors whose stories were shared throughout the convoy campaign last year to inspire drivers throughout their fundraising efforts.

The 35th annual Mother’s Day Truck Convoy, will take place on Sunday, May 12, 2024, at Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction. The 2024 driver fundraising campaign will kick off on Monday, Oct. 16, at www.wishconvoy.org. Sponsorship opportunities are available for the 35th annual Mother’s Day Truck Convoy. Leather, tattoos, bikes, heart - and toys

From the outside looking in, the annual Lancaster County Toy Ride may look like just another group of bikers out for a day on the road. But it’s more than that. The event seeks to help fund Christmas gifts for children who may not otherwise receive many presents.

The 2023 Lancaster County Toy Ride will be conducted on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will begin and end at American Legion Post 34, 1388 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

A monetary donation or a donation of a toy with a set minimum value is suggested. All proceeds from the event will go to Lancaster County Toys for Tots.

“Sometimes people just see the (tattoos) and the leather,” said Jimmy Emig, the ride director and an elder for the tristate chapter of Bikers for

Sierra Club plans hike

Members of the Sierra ClubLancaster Group invite the public to join them for an easy to moderate scenic hike through the Nolde Forest at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct, 14. The hike was scheduled for last spring but was postponed because of threatening weather.

The 725-acre Nolde Forest with its Environmental Education Center, 3025 New Holland Road, Reading, features deciduous woodlands and coniferous plantations, which are laced with networks of trails that meander along streams and ponds and through diverse habitats. In addition to being treated to a scenic walk beside a stream, hikers will be able to view colorful autumn leaves, which should be at their prime.

Registration is required by visiting www.lancastersierra club.org and clicking on the event link on the calendar. For more details, call 717-575-8705 or 717-475-0586 or email SierraClubEvent@gmail.com.

Christ. “I think some bikers get labeled just by the look. But you can’t judge a book by a cover. Open the book. If you do, you’re going to see a big heart. It’s one big heart on two wheels. That’s what a real biker is.”

At 1 p.m., kickstands will go up, and the participants in the Lancaster County Toy Ride will hit the road to Columbia, Marietta, Elizabethtown and back again.

“It’s a brotherhood,” said Emig. “There is nothing bigger than when you’re riding along with another biker. You may not know his name, but you know his purpose. It’s inspiring. It’s coming together for one cause.”

That brotherhood is extensive and far-reaching. Between 500 and 1,000 bikers are expected to participate in the Lancaster County Toy Ride.

“It’s the biker community,” said Emig. “Over half of them

who come out are from the Lancaster area. It’s motorcycle clubs coming together. This is the biggest ride in our biker community. We average 80 to 100 riding events each year and this is the biggest one put together for a cause. This is the one that everyone circles on their calendars.”

Emig said that the Lancaster County chapter of Toys for Tots’ operating budget for this year is $80,000. The purpose of the ride is to help provide some of those funds.

“$80,000 is a pretty big number,” said Emig. “There’s no goal besides trying to help offset the costs for Toys for Tots. I think bikers can lead by example and show what happens when people come together. We need to start coming together.”

The Lancaster County Toy Ride was first established 25 years ago. In the past, toys and funds were donated directly to local children in hospitals or

children who were homeless. This year marks the first time that the ride has been associated with Lancaster County Toys for Tots.

“It’s almost all the time that we’re looking to help out children,” said Emig. “When we first started this, we just wanted to help local children have a good Christmas. We’re always looking for ways to help more children. We want to keep serving the community as a brotherhood.”

To donate to the Lancaster County Toy Ride, email LancasterToyRide@gmail.com or call Emig at 717-575-6338.

Amish and Mennonite neighbors; her first name even lacked the conventional “o” in “Phoebe” due to the Quakers’ belief that it was too worldly.

Phebe’s relocation to Lancaster granted her an intimate view into its residents’ culture, which she describes in her book.

In addition to being a talented author and a Quaker with many traditional values, Phebe was a progressive thinker and a scholar. She belonged to several intellectual groups and spoke with the

likes of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and John Greenleaf Whittier. Gibbons was also an abolitionist and operated an Underground Railroad station just north of Bird-in-Hand, just like her family members had for the past two generations. Phebe’s status and capability as a writer contributed to the national success of “Pennsylvania Dutch and Other Essays.” Folk life scholar Alfred Shoemaker praised the book as a fascinating account, and it helped to propel the

success of the tourism industry in Lancaster County.

In addition to his interest in the history of Lancaster County, Brubaker has a personal tie to the Gibbons family. Brubaker’s great-grandfather married Mariana Gibbons, one of Phebe’s children. Brubaker grew up reading Phebe’s diaries, and his family became the sole inheritor of all of the author’s material. The Brubakers have donated most of Phebe’s work to LancasterHistory. “For me, it’s been sort of carrying the torch for a family

that I admire greatly, even though there’s no blood relationship,” Brubaker said. Brubaker was born in Bird-inHand, on the same farm where Phebe once lived.

Brubaker frequently gives lectures throughout Lancaster County on a variety of subjects, and he was asked by the Amos Herr Foundation to present at Woodcrest Villa several years ago. After a positive reception, the foundation has asked Brubaker to return to the retirement home annually to give a lecture.

In the 1700s, Historic Ephrata Cloister was the town of Ephrata. Like any small village, it had craftsmen who wove cloth, baked bread and built houses. Ephrata also featured a printing office to produce books and a doctor to care for the sick.

These and other 18th-century activities will come to life as part of Community Day, an interactive educational program set for Friday, Oct. 20, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program is open to public and private schools, as well as homeschoolers. There will be an admission fee, with separate prices for students and for chaperones. Advance reservations are encouraged and can be made by calling the Ephrata Cloister at 717-733-6600.

Postcard club sets meeting

The Lancaster County Postcard Club will hold its October meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 16, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The evening’s program, “Harvard’s Glass Flower Models 18861939,” will be presented by

club member Betty Beck. The postcard competition will be “Famous Interiors (and the Stories Behind Them).”

The meeting is open to the public. For more information, call 717-413-6882 or follow Lancaster County Postcard Club on Facebook.

The hands-on program will offer at least a dozen different stations around the historic site, with each stop offering a 10- to 15-minute look at things such as lighting, clothing and writing in the 1700s community. Students will be free to travel in small groups with their chaperones in any order through the various interpretive stations.

A visit to the bakery will show that bread did not always come in plastic wrappers, and the carpenter will explain that that not all roof shingles are made the same. Students will also visit the doctor and the schoolhouse, where they will learn how to write on stone.

Historic Ephrata Cloister is administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission with support from the Ephrata Cloister Associates. For more information, visit www.Ephrata Cloister.org.

“A lot of people ask me, ‘What can I do? I want to get involved,’” said North Star Initiative executive director Melinda Clark. “This is the time to come and get involved. It’s also partnering together to form a community where trafficking is unimaginable, where trafficking doesn’t exist. We encourage people to find their place in the battle. It’s a massive battle, but the battle is winnable. Want to know where to start? This is it.”

Tapas is a food trend that originated in Spain and involves serving a variety of appetizers and small servings. The evening’s ambiance will be enhanced by live music.

“The food is delicious, and it’s just one of the fun aspects of the evening,” said Clark. “We’re gathering with good people over good food for a good cause. It’s a feel of friends getting together to enjoy each other’s company. ... It builds its own synergy when people connect around the cause.”

Clark is expected to address the gathering about North Star Initiative’s purpose, the work it has already accomplished and the struggles that lie ahead.

“I’ll have a chance to share North Star’s mission and vision to end trafficking and supporting those lives that have been affected by it,” said Clark. “I want to talk about how our common experiences can help the challenges our survivors face. People think it’s happening just overseas, but it’s not. It’s also happening here in Lancaster County. It’s the perfect opportunity to get an update on the state of it.”

North Star Initiative is planning for 200 people to attend Tapas Shindig. This year’s goal is to raise $200,000 for the mission, $25,000 more than was donated in 2022.

This year will mark North Star Initiative’s fifth edition of Tapas Shindig. Last year’s event was conducted at The
