Going For Gold

Local athlete Marty Zeamer Jr. has been involved with the Special Olympics for over 20 years, following a rigorous training schedule and participating in meets across the country. This year was his first time competing in nationals, and his hard work paid off; in June, he took home a bronze medal in the 50-meter freestyle relay and placed seventh in the 50-meter backstroke relay at the Special Olympics USA Games in Orlando.

Marty started swimming at the Hempfield recCenter in the fall of 2021, training there once a week and training twice a week at the Lititz recCenter with his Olympic coach, Anne Phillips. After competing in Orlando in June, he took the summer off, but will start training again soon for the beginning of the season in January. Currently, Marty is training for an upcoming powerlifting meet in Villanova.

“He’s always been athletic. Marty started out with soccer and basketball when he was young,” said Chris Zeamer, Marty’s mother. “He found

that he enjoys individual sports more than team sports, so he started swimming and powerlifting.”

Marty started swimming when he was 8 years old and competes at an event in State College each year.

“Being at nationals was on a whole other level,” Chris said. “It was the culmination of all of his training.

Marty knew he trained for it and was very excited with his medals.”

Although he found success at the competition in Orlando, Marty has no plans to stop training for the next meet. He has his sights set on mastering techniques he has yet to try, including platform diving, completing flip turns in the water and adding butterfly and breaststroke to his repertoire.

Marty lives in West Hempfield Township with his mother, Chris; father, Marty Sr.; and dog. The family also includes Marty’s brother, Joe. Marty Sr. is a powerlifting coach for the Special Olympics and works with his son for his lifting competitions.

“ We’re a very active family,” said Chris. “We go walking three times a week with our dog, Ava, and go biking on many local trails.” Aside from

competitive athletics, Marty loves country music, action movies and watching football with his family.

Three days a week, Marty works at Lighthouse Vocational Services in New Holland, an organization that provides work opportunities and community engagement programs

for those with developmental disabilities. Jobs such as assembling and packaging items are offered at the facility, and opportunities for competitive jobs are made available for participants of the program.

Getting Excited About Science

Hempfield High School will hold a STEM summit on Tuesday, Nov. 8, and Wednesday, Nov. 9, in partnership with Junior Achievement of South Central PA (JASCPA). The summit will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will provide interactive learning modules for the school’s freshmen on biology, chemistry, engineering, manufacturing, mathematics, physics, technology, STEM relay and multiple trades.

The summit relies on volunteers to run its activities; each volunteer will be assigned to one of the nine modules and will receive written instructions and a QR code for a training video.

Working in unison, the volunteers at each station will lead their assigned 30-minute activity nine times throughout the day as groups of students rotate through the stations. A STEM

Promise Players Theater Group Posts Fall Play

The Promise Players theater group will present “Life, Death and Two Strips of Bacon” for its fall play at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, on Friday to Sunday, Nov. 4 through 6, and Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 10 through 13. The Thursday and Friday shows will begin at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays will have a 2:30 p.m. matinee and a 7:30 p.m. showing and Sundays will have a 5 p.m. showing.

The play follows the story of a small town 25 years after a bus accident killed the members of the local wrestling team and rattled the community. The majority of the show takes place in the Red Rocket Diner, named after the town’s sports team, where the audience gets to know the diner’s regulars: the waitresses competing to see

who can convince a customer to order the strangest meal, the sheriff who stops in for his daily coffee and the discontented cook, Johnny, who dreams of escaping to the big city. When another tragedy strikes, the town’s residents and the regulars at the diner navigate the loss, and Johnny wrestles with his faith as he ruminates on life and death during his daily task of serving up breakfast.

The Promise Players’ board of directors met in 2019 to research potential shows but had to put its schedule on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Promise Players’ first show since the pandemic was “Smoke on the Mountain,” which was held over the summer at Rawlinsville Camp Meeting.

“‘Life, Death and Two Strips of Bacon’ is about how faith helps us through difficult circumstances,” said Lanny Mil-

BANKRUPTCY

lette, the play’s director. “(The Promise Players) felt like there was a good faith message in it, and it still has a light-hearted nature. It’s a message people need to hear.” The organization’s goal is to stage performances that speak to life issues and illustrate what it means to be a Christian in today’s world. Actors are cast from across the county, and those who are not placed in acting roles often assist behind the scenes with things such as lighting, stage production and operating the box office.

For each play, the Promise Players has sponsored a different nonprofit and donated any profits made; in the last 27 years, it has donated over

$250,000 between several organizations. “We want to make a difference in the community,” said Millette. “Not only is it a great night of entertainment, but you support a good cause.”

“Life, Death and Two Strips of Bacon” will benefit The Factory Ministries’ youth ministry in Paradise.

Tickets for the show may be purchased via donation online or at the door. There is a suggested monetary donation for adults, and attendees may also donate a can of nonperishable food for admission, which will be given to the community food bank in East Lampeter.

Create Columbia wants to make the river town a Halloween destination. The group, whose mission is to promote the arts in Columbia, will host two Halloweenthemed events on Saturday, Oct. 29, and Sunday, Oct. 30. On Oct. 29, the group will host a vendor event in the Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., from noon to 2 p.m. The event will showcase antique and vintage Halloween decorations, with a collector on hand to discuss the items and answer questions. The next day, Oct. 30, the second annual Halloween House Tour will be featured. It will run from 3 to 8 p.m. and will consist of four private homes and four public properties.

“This is not a scary tour,” said Kay Leader, a member of Create Columbia. “It’s an opportunity to see Halloween decorations and maybe get some inspiration for your own

house.”

Tour-goers may proceed through the route at their own pace and in any order. Two venues will have limited hours during the tour. Mount Bethel Cemetery, located at 700 Locust St., will offer mini tours from 3 to 6:30 p.m. and will be open for exploration until 7 p.m. Art Printing Co., 131 Locust St., will be part of the tour from 3 to 6 p.m. Both venues are also participating in the Haunted Lantern Tour, which will run concurrently to the house tour.

Additional sites on the house tour include the Columbia School of Music, the Columbia Market House and a variety of homes that will be decorated for the holiday.

Leader noted that last year’s inaugural tour was wellreceived. “I’m still getting positive feedback and still hearing good things about last year’s tour,” she stated.

Denise Brubaker, a member of Create Columbia who participated in the first tour, will again open her home this year. She and her husband, Gary, are Halloween enthusiasts who keep a downstairs room decorated for the holiday year-round.

“I like this tour, because all of the stops are different,” Denise remarked. “I don’t decorate like anyone else on the tour, and you’re going to see something

unique at each location.”

She also emphasized that even though her home was on last year’s tour, visitors will see new things this time around.

Hodge and Fahrney Lead Knights to League Title

At the L-L League Cross Country Championships held at Ephrata Middle School on Tuesday, October 18, the Hempfield boys’ squad finished atop the team standings with 37 team points. A huge part of their success was Aidan Hodge and Joe Fahrney taking second and third,

respectively, with times of 16:00.70 and 16:07.80. Colin Whitaker of Lampeter-Strasburg was the fastest runner at 15:49.

Sam Meyer (16:48.30) took ninth while 11th and 12th went to Emerson Long (16:51.6) and Sam Freedman (16:56.6).

Isaiah Hollinger came in at 16th (17:16.9) Chris Titter

(28th, 17:32.3) and Frank Christoffel (39th, 17:54.3) also finished in the top-40.

The girls’ team compiled 107 points and finished sixth in the overall team standings. Molly Siebert (20:20.9) paced the Knights with her 15thplace finish. Ella Wolfe (18th, 20:27.7) and Roz Scott (43rd, 21:29.40) were also in the top-50 while Ashley Paige (58th, 22:00.20) and Norah Rynier (63rd, 22:10.20) were exactly 10 seconds apart.

Callie Herr (22:25.80) and Leah Forry (22:26.50) finished back-to-back. Freshman Jazahlyn Lopez registered a time of 23:28.8

FOOTBALL

The Hempfield football team faced an Exeter squad basking in the luxury of large linemen, who were able to shut down the Black Knights’ usually successful running game on Friday night, October 14 at Landisville.

There were certain factors that had led to the Exeter Eagles bringing a 7-0 record into Friday night’s game - a record that included two shutouts and only allowing single-digit scoring from three other opponents out of the seven wins - a stretch of games in which the Eagles had outscored opponents 301-64.

Hempfield quarterback Jackson Landis passed for

293 yards on 23 completions, accounting for all three of his team’s touchdowns. The Eagles’ defense, however, was too much as the Black Knights fell 44-22.

“Exeter was tough against the run,” George Eager, the Knights’ head coach, said. “They are huge up front, so it was hard to find any running lanes.

“Additionally, we got away from the run early in the game because of the score,” Eager added. “We turned the ball over and got down in the first half, so we needed to score quickly.”

The Eagles’ offensive line helped Richie Karstien gain 212 yards on the ground on 32 carries. Karstien was the work horse and accounted for four of the Eagles’ touchdowns.

A field goal and a Karstien touchdown put the Eagles up 10-0.

A 27-yard pass from Landis to Andy Garcia cut the deficit to 10-7 in the second quarter. Garcia had a night to remember, catching eight passes for 120 yards.

“Our receivers stepped up,” Eager said. “For a high school team, we have several options, which can be rare. We feel confident that our guys can get open and make plays. Ideally, we want to be a balanced offense with a run/pass ratio of 50/50. But when given the chance, we aren’t afraid to throw the ball 30-plus times a game.”

Exeter pulled ahead and made it 30-7 at halftime, finishing the first-half scoring on an 89-yard interception return by Gavin Reiking.

Julian Morales and Micah Gates were both on the receiving end of Landis touchdown passes in the second half. Gates, who caught three passes for 39 yards, also topped off his TD by catching the two-point conversion.

Morales tallied five receptions for 76 yards while yet another passing target Gabe Benjamin had 53 yards on four receptions.

The Black Knights (6-2) scheduled to finish the season with two road games against Section One rivals look to have solid outings and have that carry into the

postseason.

“Down the stretch we do not have to change a thing in our approach,” said Eager. “We game plan, watch film and practice hard each week. We want to continue to do that. If we do those things and win, the [District Three] seedings will take care of themselves.”

Through and including the Exeter game, the Knights are third in the District Three Class 6A power rankingsbehind Cumberland Valley and Central York. The Eagles, incidentally, are second in the Class 5A rankings behind Solanco.

BOYS’ SOCCER

In the opening round of the L-L League playoffs, the boys’ soccer team fell to Lancaster Catholic 1-0 at Hempfield on Saturday, October 15.

The Section One champion Knights fell to the Section Four runners-up.

Despite the loss, the Knights (11-4-2) prepare to embark on the District Three Class 4A playoffs. They are second in the district power rankings.

TENNIS

On Thursday afternoon, October 12, the eighth-seeded Hempfield girls’ tennis team lost to District Three Class 3A top seed New Oxford 5-0 at the Hershey Racquet Club.

Nancy Winand and Neha Dhakal were on the short end of 6-0, 6-3 results at number two doubles. At number two singles, Alex Gregory came close in a 6-4 defeat in her first set.

The Knights fell to 11-3.

background is not required to become a volunteer, and JASCPA encourages those participating to share their personal experiences and career path insights with students. “We don’t need everyone to be a biologist or a chemist,” said Shannon Baker, vice president of program operations for JASCPA. “Often we’re able to show kids that you don’t always know what you’re doing the first time and that’s OK.”

Each day, the summit will have over 300 students par-

ticipating and will require 29 volunteers to operate it. Volunteers are provided from school faculty and members of JASCPA, as well as local residents interested in assisting. The goal of the summit is to introduce students to different aspects of STEM and multiple trades. “The activities are fun. We want kids to get involved and get excited about science,” said Baker. “It’s not a career fair, and by the end of the day, the volunteers are going to be experts on their topic.” Since volun-

teers will be present for a single day of the event, no clearances are required by the school district for volunteers, but they will be required to follow a code of conduct.

The STEM summit is one of many programs JASCPA offers for free in schools throughout Lancaster, York and Adams counties. Each program is tailored toward a specific age group and tackles a different subject. The Real Life program is a financial literacy course for 11th- and 12th-grade students that provides an opportunity to

gain experience creating budgets and navigating real-life scenarios. Another activity offered by JASCPA is the YES program, which educates middle school students on the importance of financial decisions in everyday life. JASCPA offers up to five different events per week throughout the area and requires over 3,000 volunteers each year to operate them. Come Shopping At A Church Bazaar

There is really something for everyone at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church’s bazaar, whether you’re looking for food, homemade crafts or thrift-store treasures, said Mary Ann Eshleman, bazaar organizer. The event will be held on Friday, Nov. 4, and Saturday, Nov. 5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church, 1290 River Road, Marietta.

“For food, we are doing soup and barbecue to go again this year like we did last year,” Eshleman noted. The selection of soups will include ham and bean, vegetable beef and chicken corn, along with whatever other types church members choose to make.

“We’ll have a variety to choose from,” she remarked. “We’ll also have hamburger and pork barbecue, and we always have a lot of baked goods, like

cookies, candy and snacks. The baked goods are most people’s favorite part of the bazaar. They walk in the door and head straight to them.”

Throughout the year, church members get together about once a month to make craft items for the bazaar. Items for sale will include a variety of wood crafts such as snowmen, sleds and other Christmas decorations, as well as year-round décor. “Some of our wooden items are made from repurposed wood, including pallets,” Eshleman commented, adding that items also include window frame mirrors, a bench, wall sconces and stools. Other craft items that will be featured include crocheted stuffed animals, hats, scarves and an afghan, as well as beaded jewelry, notebooks and ornaments.

A white elephant area of the bazaar will feature a little of everything, Eshleman said. “There’s usually a big section of jigsaw puzzles and books,” she said. “There’s lots of miscellaneous variety and lots of good bargains.”

Half of the proceeds from the bazaar will go toward the church’s elevator fund, and half will support outreach ministries, including the East Donegal/Conoy Area Christian Food Bank, school supplies for

local students and programs for local senior citizens.

Eshleman said the bazaar is not just a fundraiser but also a way for the church to connect with the community. “We like to give back, and we like putting on an event that promotes good fellowship,” she shared. “The bazaar also involves everybody in our congregation in some way, from making crafts to making food to helping during the event.”

Apprentices Earn Opportunity To Compete At National Event

Three ABC Keystone apprentices received top scores at the Keystone Chapter’s individual local craft competition on Oct. 1, which was held at the chapter’s state-of-the-art training facility in Manheim. This year, the competition also featured the chapter’s first-ever team competition designed to demonstrate safety along with craft interdependency and teamwork; simulate working conditions, where planning is critical to success; highlight individual leadership and workmanship skills as the project was assembled and completed; and encourage apprentices to work through problems as a team.

The top scorers will receive an allexpenses-paid trip to the upcoming ABC National Craft Competition (NCC) to be held from Wednesday, March 15, through Friday, March 17, 2023, in Kissimmee, Fla. At the NCC, they will compete against craftspeople from ABC’s 68 chapters nationwide.

The local craft competition is made possible through the support of ABC Keystone Chapter members.

The competition was open to the public and was attended by family members and friends of the apprentices as well as the members of the Keystone Chapter, which provided the competitors the opportunity to compete in an environment replicating the experience of competing at ABC’s NCC.

Competitors had to keep their focus on their craft and maintain strict attention to safety while working on projects that had been designed to test their practical and problem-solving skills.

The hands-on portion of the individ-

ual competition contributed to 75% of their total score and was judged by construction industry professionals. Individual competitors were not given details of their project build prior to the event. Ahead of the practical trade skills competition, the apprentices were required to take a written test contributing to the remaining 25% of their total score. During the written test, they proved their academic understanding and knowledge gained throughout their education program. To earn a spot at ABC Keystone’s individual local craft competition, apprentices had to rank within the top five of their trade class.

During the team competition, craft journey-level professionals worked in teams of four to complete a series of craft-specific tasks focused on electrical, plumbing, sheet metal/HVAC and carpentry in a six-hour period.

Team competitors were not required to take a written assessment. Teams were provided craft specifications and drawings no more than 24 hours before the event.

Each competitor received a Home Depot gift card for his or her participation. The first-place winner in each trade was given a Home Depot gift card and the trip to the NCC.

The individual top scorers were Richard Barnhart of Millersville, Frey Lutz Corp., in the plumbing competition; Matthew Flores of Ronks, Benchmark Construction Company Inc., in carpentry; and Evan Williams of Lancaster, Haller Enterprises, in electrical. Other apprentices who participated individually in the local competition include Brandon Anchant of East Petersburg, Benchmark Construction; Charles Miller of Elizabethtown, Wickersham Construction and Engineering Inc.; and Brett Travis of Annville, Benchmark Construction, in carpentry, as well as Cory Clites of York, Cyprium Solutions Inc., and Cayden Heiselman of Quarryville, D&T Electric, in electrical.

The team craft competition winner was Benchmark Construction. Local members of the team were carpentry apprentice Jason Birdwell from Benchmark Construction, electrical apprentice Gavin Sangrey from Meadow Valley Electric Inc., and plumbing apprentice Ryan Eberly from Flow Mechanical. Wohlsen Construction Company of Lancaster also participated in the team competition.
