Holiday shopping fair will benefit local animal shelters BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
urever Home Adoption Center will host its ninth annual Holiday Shopping Fair on Saturday, Nov. 18, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will be held at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Proceeds will benefit Furever Home and Pet Pantry of Lancaster County. More than 100 vendors will be present at the shopping fair to sell a variety of goods, such as handmade crafts, jewelry, soaps, clothing, blankets and Christmas decorations. Although the majority of the vendors are based within Lancaster County, a few merchants from Harrisburg will join the roster this year. Staff members from the Pet Pantry will sell hot food, baked goods and beverages throughout the day. The first 100 guests to arrive will
F
receive a free entry in a prize drawing, which will include items donated by the fair’s participating vendors, local businesses and individuals throughout the community. Gift cards, gift baskets and pet-related goods will be among the prizes given out during the drawing. The shopping fair was started by Tina Krueger, who volunteers at both Furever Home and Pet Pantry. When Krueger initially became involved with Furever Home, the shelter did not have anyone to manage its fundraising operations. Due to the combination of Krueger’s professional background in marketing and her love for animals, she volunteered immediately and started to plan the first shopping fair. “I felt I had good resources and connections because of my background, plus it kept me out of the shelters so I didn’t take all the animals home,” Krueger said. At first, the fair was held at Four See Shopping fair pg 5
The shopping fair will feature more than 100 vendors.

Promise Players slate fall play BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
The Promise Players theater group will offer a performance of “The One You Need” for its fall production at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, on Friday to Sunday, Nov. 3 through 5, and Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 9 through 12. The Thursday and Friday shows will be held at 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays will have a 2:30 p.m. matinee and a 7:30 p.m. show, and Sundays will have a 5 p.m. show to close the weekend. “The One You Need” is a play
written by Janette Frankford-Book, who has been a member of the Promise Players for more than 13 years. The production tells the story of Jan, a young woman who is taking care of her father after he is diagnosed with a terminal illness. As the father approaches the end of his life, his primary concern is making sure his daughter has a relationship with God. Jan opposes the faith and only wishes to have her father in her life. The play explores the subject of grief as it follows the intense dynamic between the two main characters, but it also finds room

The Country Fair and Market at Glossbrenner United Methodist Church features food and bargains, but it serves another purpose as well. “It’s about community outreach,” said Sue Kopp, a member of the Caring Hands and Hearts committee at the church. “It’s a way to connect with other people.” The church, located at 713 Church St., Mount Joy, will hold its Country Fair and Market from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4. On Friday, from 4 p.m. until sold out, a chicken potpie dinner will be available for eat-in or takeout. It will include chicken potpie, coleslaw, applesauce, a roll and butter and water, coffee or tea. “The coleslaw is homemade, and it’s so good,” said Marcia Brooks, another member of the event committee. A limited number of homemade apple dumplings, both regular and sugar-free, will be
available to purchase while supplies last as well. On Saturday, chicken corn soup, hamburger barbecue, hot dogs, chips and drinks will be sold. Free hot dogs will be available for children age 10 and under. The event will also feature a variety of baked goods made by church members. “These are very popular,” Brooks said. “You can buy a whole pie or just a slice. A lot of people come for dinner and then pick up something for dessert.” Along with pies, church members will make crisped rice treats and fudge, and a congregant from South Africa will make a milk tart. Lots of items will be available for purchase at the yard sale portion of the event, including clothing, household items, books, toys and holiday decorations. “We will also have a craft table of all handmade items by members of the congregation and friends of the church,” said committee member Kathy Binkley. explore the tie between railroads and the military,” said Elizabeth Myers, program coordinator at the Railroad Museum. “The hall is always nice and full, and the music really makes the building come alive.” The swing dance has continued to grow in popularity since the tradition was started 20 years ago. Last year, the event drew more than 200 participants, the highest number of dancers to attend the swing dance to date. For more information, visit www.rrmuseumpa.org.

Nearly a century later, the trends and styles of those who lived in the early to mid1900s remain instantly recognizable and deeply appreciated by many throughout the United States. Americans who were born in the first three decades of the 20th century are commonly referred to as the Greatest Generation, and with ample reason: This generation includes the individuals who weathered calamities like the Great Depression and fought in the Second World War. America as we know it was largely shaped by the Greatest Generation. Many people pay tribute to its members by recreating the music, dancing and fashion of their time, including the participants of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s annual swing dance. The museum, which is located on 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will host the event on Saturday, Nov. 4, from 7 to 10 p.m. Tickets are available to purchase in the museum gift shop and online at
https://tinyurl.com/ rrmswingdance. The swing dance will take place in the Rolling Stock Hall of the museum, and it will include live entertainment from Moonlighters Big Band. The Lititz-based musical group performs songs of popular big band artists such as Glenn Miller and Les Brown. Moonlighters Big Band will play music for attendees to boogie to for the duration of the evening, save for a few breaks. During each break, members of the Victrola Dance Hall will demonstrate moves that first-time swing dancers can try out when the music starts back up. Light refreshments will be available during the event. On the same weekend as the swing dance, the museum will host its Trains and Troops program during its normal operating hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 4 and from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5. Several exhibitors will set up displays to discuss American military conflicts that were heavily impacted by railroads, from the American

The Lancaster Group of the Sierra Club will host programs about water resources on Thursday, Nov. 9, and Wednesday, Nov. 15. Both presentations are free and open to the public and will begin at 7 p.m. at the Stone Independent School, 480 New Holland Ave., Lancaster. On Nov. 9, Allison Zechman, the City of Lancaster’s wastewater operations supervisor, will discuss “Wastewater Treatment.” The Nov. 15 talk will focus on “Drinking Water” and will be presented by James Rieben Jr., the City of Lancaster’s water treatment manager. The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group will offer the programs as a way to tell the story of how water goes from source to tap and then from wastewater back to the environment. A remote option for the presentations also will be available via Zoom; for more details, visit www.lancastersierraclub.org and locate the event on the calendar on the homepage. temperament, they are trained to interact with the public and spread awareness of the organization’s work in the community. For more information, visit https://ravenridgewildlife center.org. Linda Rannels, owner of Geneva Bakery, frequently partners with Raven Ridge for fundraising events. Linda’s daughter, Libby, has worked as a volunteer with the wildlife rescue for seven years. Raven Ridge rescues and rehabilitates sick or injured wild animals found throughout the community. Once the animals have recovered, the organization releases them back into the wild. Raven Ridge partners with organizations such as ORCA to locate and transport the injured wildlife to its facility. “We know how much good work they do in the community,” Linda said. “We try to help out wherever we can.” On International Vulture Day in September, Geneva Bakery made a unique vulturethemed candy to raise money for Raven Ridge. This is the third year Geneva Bakery has coordinated the annual fundraiser as as part of the ExtraGive program.

He made his debut on “American Idol,” where he was in the top seven contestants in Season 11. Dixon recently performed a special version of his newest release, “My Light,” on “The Kelly Clarkson Show.” Despite humble beginnings working at a valet parking booth, Feliz has come a long way in the music industry with his soulful pop. Feliz made his imprint on the music world by winning New Artist of the Year at the 2016 Gospel Music Association Dove Awards. His debut single, “The River,” reached No. 1 on Billboard’s NCA Chart for 12 weeks. “The River” also won the ASCAP Christian Music Song of the Year Award.

for comedic scenarios as Jan struggles to be a graceful caregiver. Frankford-Book began writing “The One You Need” more than 10 years ago, and the fall production will be the play’s first time being performed for audiences. The story is inspired by Frankford-Book’s real-life experiences; nearly two decades ago, she acted as her ill father’s caregiver until his passing. The play incorporates characters such as Jan’s brothers, a local doctor and a funeral director, who are inspired by Frankford-Book’s own brothers and the individuals who helped her navigate her father’s death. FrankfordBook will play the leading role of Jan, and she is co-directing the production with Wayne Rhinier. “Everyone can relate to this play. Everyone has suffered grief in some way,” Frankford-Book said. “It’s the story
of a father wanting only the best for his kids, even in his last moments, but it also has some hilarious characters. It’s my way of paying homage to people across Lancaster County.” Doors will open one hour before each show, and general admission seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Adults may purchase tickets for a suggested minimum donation, and children age 12 and under may purchase tickets at a discounted price. Children may also pay for admission with the donation of a canned good, which Promise Players will donate to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries’ food bank in Quarryville. To purchase tickets in advance, visit https://tinyurl.com/the1youn eed or call the church office at 717-464-2050 during its regular operating hours of Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
