GTGH hints at true meaning of holidays BY JEFF FALK

Jenn Knepper knows a good idea when she sees one. Sixteen years ago, Knepper read about a unique gift fair being staged in Harrisburg by a women’s group. She reached out to the group, and after some thought, she came to the conclusion that the concept would be something that could benefit the Lancaster County community as well. Fast forward to 2023 and the annual Gifts That Give Hope

(GTGH) alternative gift fair is alive, well and thriving. The event is known for its ability to bring nonprofits together, its unique approach to gift giving and its propensity for fostering hope. “We want people to think more about the things they buy and what goes into them,” said Knepper. “The gift fair is a connection point for people to find out about people who are working to make the world a better place. I describe it as a live version of a gift catalog, except you walk into the event. We want See Gift fair pg 3

Before the German students embarked on a long flight home on Oct. 27, the visiting group traveled to New York City. “Hempfield students gave our visitors a tour on the first day, and a lot of them came up to me and said, ‘I didn’t realize that Germans did this just like me,’” said Stephanie Henrich, a German teacher at Hempfield. “It’s eye

Craft show will benefit community outreach programs BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD

The members of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church’s Caring Hands ministry invite the public to attend the church’s first craft show fundraiser.

St. Paul’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 100 W. Main St., Mountville, will host its first-ever craft show on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fundraising event will feature more than 20 vendors, a silent auction and refreshments available to purchase; the proceeds will support the church’s various outreach initiatives throughout Mountville and its adjacent communities. After the end of World War II, much of Europe was reeling from the devastation wrought by the hostilities. Aside from the physical damage done to cities across the continent, there was a rift between different nations around the globe that was in desperate need of repair. The governments of the United States and Germany sought to bridge the gap between their countries’ cultures by creating the German American Partnership Program (GAPP). GAPP, which was officially founded in 1972, allows opportunities for schools in the United States to partner with schools in Germany. The partnered schools facilitate student exchanges; American students spend a couple weeks staying with their German counterparts, and vice versa. While studying abroad, the students have an opportunity to attend classes at their hosts’ school, take field trips to historically significant sites and embrace a new culture.

Hempfield High School joined GAPP in 1990. In 1999, the school partnered with Paul-Gerhardt-Gymnasium, located in German town of Luebben. Groups of students from both schools took turns visiting their foreign counterparts every other year until 2020, when the German class canceled its visit due to concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic. On Oct. 6, after a hiatus that lasted five years, German exchange students once again arrived in Lancaster, eager to spend the next three weeks experiencing a new culture. During their stay, the visiting students are required to attend their host’s school for 10 days. The visiting Germans attended classes with their GAPP partners, and they received a warm welcome from students and teachers alike. Certain exchange students visited preschool classrooms to learn more about early education; others received instructions on welding in the school’s workshop. Students in the communications technology class gave their guests an opportunity to

show to sustain its projects and ministries that seek to benefit the community in a number of ways. The church frequently partners with Columbia Food Bank, Samaritan’s Purse Shoe Boxes and Salvation Army, and it regularly supports Mountville Elementary School and the Mountville Fire Department. Additionally, St. Paul’s UMC allows local Boy Scout troops, addiction recovery groups and local nonprofits to use its fellowship hall for meetings and special events at no cost. The idea to organize a craft show fundraiser was introduced by church member Julie Ehrgood. Julie and her husband, Francis, reside in Washington Boro, and they began to attend services at St. Paul’s UMC two years ago. Julie and Francis are avid archers and enjoy shooting arrows in their free time, and they befriended fellow bowman Jim Cavalera while at a shooting range. Cavalera, who serves as St. Paul UMC’s pastor, invited Julie and Francis to join his congregation. W hen Julie joined St. Paul’s UMC, she immediately knew she wanted to spearhead a ministry for its members; over the past few years, she has organized dozens of galas and auctions to raise money for nonprofits across Lancaster County. Julie now helms the Caring Hands ministry: a committee within the church that offers special services to members who are experiencing health issues. Caring Hands provides meals, cards and various forms of aid to congregants with severe illnesses such as cancer. “The pastor had asked me what I could do to help the church when I was first getting ready to join,” Julie said. “I knew what I wanted to do, and I received support for the ministry right away; people volunteered immediately.” For more information, visit www.saintpaulsumc.church. scan this code for more local news townlively.com

It’s really connected to love. When I give, I always receive more in return. It’s almost like planting seeds.” Over the years, GTGH’s alternative gift fair has changed and evolved, with vendors, nonprofits and people

Nearly 40 nonprofits and a dozen marketplace vendors are expected to be there. Food trucks will be stationed outside to enhance the atmosphere. “Have you ever seen someone who has no hope?” said Gustavo Valdez, president of Kairos Ministries Guatemala, one of the participating nonprofits. “That is a person who has no future, no way out. Hope is a way to tell people that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. With hope, there’s a reason for tomorrow.” Perhaps the best ways to describe the gifts that will be available at GTGH’s fair are

“I don’t like the emphasis on materialism,” she added. “The fair redefines giving. My parents have always been minimalists. I started giving them charitable contributions as gifts even before the fair began. the play was chosen. “One of the girls had a friend who was in ‘Radium’ at L-S, and she thought the show was great. I spoke to the kids, and they were very excited. They wanted something that would be challenging and have a powerful message. Many of these kids are ‘actor’s actors,’ and they wanted to delve into character and emotion.” Bartlett noted that the venue is not a traditional stage but a black box theater, which is a more intimate performing space. “That is a very unique experience for students because normally they perform on a stage in an auditorium,” Bartlett noted. “Most kids do not have the experience of performing in a black box theater, and it’s a very intimate show. theater students have partnered with the theater group, and LBC student Allyson Hunsicker has taken on the role of co-director. According to its mission statement, the group was created for homeschooled students and their families “who desire a high-quality theater experience without having to compromise their Christian beliefs and values.” “We want to put on shows that are wholesome not only for the kids but the community and to provide quality opportunities for these homeschooled kids,” Bartlett noted. Veterinarian to open practice in Lime Spring Square The final lot at the Lime Spring Square shopping center on Rohrerstown Road in Lancaster will be developed for a rapidly growing veterinary clinic nearby, the project’s developer has announced. A groundbreaking ceremony for Pine Creek Animal Hospital at Manor was held at the new location by Lime Spring Square developer Oak Tree Development Group. Pine Creek anticipates moving to the much larger and far more functional building in March 2024. There, the clinic expects to double its staff in two years, according to veterinarian and owner Ashley Tuma. The clinic’s 6,400-squarefoot facility will be the 12th building in the 65,000-squarefoot retail center, capping an eight-year endeavor and a total investment of $22 million by Oak Tree. Lime Spring Square’s retail center at 206 Rohrerstown Road, near Columbia Avenue, is focused on providing products and services for people

who live or work in the vicinity. Pine Creek will be located behind Citadel Credit Union. Tuma has been practicing since 2008 and self-employed since 2018, when she purchased her employer, Atglen Animal Hospital, and renamed the business after the street it is on. She’s tripled the Gap practice’s revenue and quadrupled its workforce to about 35. The location has broadened its scope as well. In addition to caring for dogs and cats, it now treats exotic pets as well. Tuma added a second practice in December 2022 by purchasing the Manor Animal Hospital, 2100 Stone Mill Road, just off Millersville Road. But its 1,900 square feet only includes three exam rooms and 10 parking spaces. Nonetheless, it is adding 70 to 80 new clients a month, according to Tuma, 41, of Holtwood, a graduate of Solanco High School, University of Maryland and Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. By moving the practice just

1 mile north to Lime Spring Square, Tuma hopes the new location’s proximity to its current address will help the practice retain its client base. She believes the upgrade in facilities will do that too, as well as attract new clients. At Lime Spring Square, Pine Creek will have a building of 6,400 square feet, 10 exam rooms, 40 parking spaces and bigger spaces for surgical and

in Pennsylvania dental procedures. With the move, Tuma expects that practice to expand from two veterinarians to four or five, increasing a rise in the workforce from 18 currently to about 35. Additional doctors and staff will enable the practice to extend its hours. Though Tuma will lease the building from Oak Tree, the See Veterinarian pg 8

isits to a den st are o en depicted in media as frightening experiences, and many people view a den st’s office as the last place they would ever want to step foot. Although movies and TV shows are notorious for their hyperbolic portrayals of dental procedures, there are many real-life factors that keep a number of adults from seeking the care their teeth require. According to the Na onal Center for Health Sta s cs, only 64.1% of adults received a dental examina on or teeth cleaning in 2022. One of the most common barriers around proper dental care is the expense: Those without insurance may refrain from regular visits to avoid the risk of paying out-of- Pic: On Oct. 19, state Sen. $1.2 million. That’s a bag of loot. That’s some serious bank. That’s a loaf of bread. That’s the amount of money that HOPE International, 227 Granite Run Drive, Suite 250, Lancaster, recently raised with its 23rd annual golf outing. The Manheim Township-based nonprofit will put those dollars to good use in the form of loans, investments and assistance to financially challenged individuals and families around the globe. “We’re excited about the impact we are having,” said HOPE International founder Jeff Rutt. “That money will

impact thousands and thousands of lives. Small loans can empower families to have dignity instilled in their lives. With the families we serve, we really believe God has put each of them in our hands.” “A lot of people like to golf, and a lot of people want to impact lives around the world,” Rutt continued. “This is a vehicle. It’s a way to network together, have a great time outdoors and at the same time drive out poverty. It’s a fun way of fundraising.” The outing was conducted at three separate golf courses Iron Valley Golf Club in Lebanon, Wyncote Golf Club in Oxford and Turf Valley Golf Club in Ellicott City, Md. - in the middle of September. Some 350 players participated. “It’s small businesses who want to get involved, and they’ll send folks on their team,” said Rutt. “Sometimes the golfers may not even be aware of what the owner of their company is doing. They may not even be aware the company is involved with helping lives around the world. It’s a great way to get involved.” The 2023 version of the HOPE International golf outing raised about $200,000 more than last year’s. The event pulled in $951,444 in 2021 and raised more than

Besides the shopping center, Lime Spring Square also has 542,000-square-feet of commercial and industrial space. That commercial and industrial portion is expected to

be completed in 2025, bringing Oak Tree’s total investment in the entire Lime Spring Square development to $110 million, according to Mike O’Brien, Oak Tree president. Next to Lime Spring Square is Lime Spring Farm, another Oak Tree development, consisting of commercial, industrial and residential space.

Lancaster-based Oak Tree is among the county’s leading developers. Its other projects include redeveloping the Wilbur Chocolate factory on North Broad Street in Lititz into a mix of new uses and creating the mixed-use campus anchored by Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center on Harrisburg Pike in East Hempfield.

$625,000 the year prior. Over the years, the golf outing has collected more than $7 million in donations. “We started very small at the beginning, but we’ve been building on it,” said Rutt. “I think philanthropy in general has changed over the 23 years. It used to be, ‘We need to send our money.’ But I’ve seen a shift where the world has become smaller.” “The way (the outing) has grown is tied to the impact,” added Rutt. “If something works, the word spreads. Like, ‘Hey, I want to get behind something that’s growing.’ And with some of the people we work with, their businesses have grown.” Rutt founded HOPE International in 1997, and a year

later the organization’s first loans were dispersed in Ukraine. In 2004, Peter Greer became HOPE International’s president, and in that same year it distributed its 10,000th loan. From its founding to the current time, HOPE International has aided 2.7 million families in 24 countries around the world with $1.7 billion in loans. “In the beginning, I had no idea what I was doing,” said Rutt. “I wanted to help, but I didn’t know how to help. God knew, and we just kept taking small steps. God had bigger plans. It was exciting to see.” For additional information about HOPE International, go to www.hopeinternational .org.
