PetPantry of Lancaster County, 26 Millersville Road, Lancaster, will celebrate its 10-year anniversary with a pet food drive and open house on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 5 to 8 p.m. A complimentary shuttle service and parking will be available at Lowe’s Home Improvement, 25 Rohrerstown Road, Lancaster, to take attendees to the event. Many local food trucks will be present at the event as well as a beer garden, wine tastings, a holiday market and an opportunity to take family pictures with Santa.

During the event, Pet Pantry will light the exterior of its main building. “Each light represents a life that we have touched,” said Melody Sanders, CEO and co-founder of the organization. “(Pet Pantry) lights the way for animals in Lancaster.” After the building is lit, light refreshments will be available and tours of the building will offered as a way for Pet Pantry to educate the community on its services.

Pet Pantry will also open the doors

to its newly acquired location on Columbia Avenue on Dec. 3. The new building will serve as a dedicated trap, neuter and return clinic for cats in the local community and hold kennels for dogs in search of forever homes. Pet Pantry holds a weekly clinic to spay and neuter feral cats in the local community, often attending to 25 cats per week. The clinic

serves as a way to control the feline population and help the cats lead a healthier life. “These are the cats that show up at your house and you start feeding them. Next thing you know, you have a litter of kittens on your doorstep,” said Sanders. “This is the best way to handle it.”

Pet Pantry assists more than 285 families each month, providing them

with pet food, treats, litter, low-cost spay and neuter services and veterinary services at a reduced rate. The organization also operates a rescue that takes in animals that families are unable to care for and places nearly 500 animals in homes each year.

“Some people can’t keep their animals, even when we provide food and litter,” said Sanders. “We find homes

for these animals. A lot of people can’t afford to do it any other way.”

Pet Pantry will accept pet food donations throughout the month following the open house, and the organization requests dry food for both dogs and cats to be donated. Lights may also be purchased for the lighting ceremony. For more information, visit https://tinyurl.com/petpantrylights.

In October, Poiema Visual Arts introduced Sketch It! Sunday, a new program that partnered with multiple local churches to connect with members of the community via visual learning techniques. The organization invited churches across Pennsylvania to participate by providing the churches with drawing paper and writing utensils and encouraging them to invite members of their congregations to sketch and take notes during the service.

Blessings

The mission of Blessings of Hope is to end world hunger, and the nonprofit organization just took a step closer to that goal. The purchase of a 52,000-square-foot facility in Elizabethtown, the former home of Darrenkamp’s Market, will allow Blessings of Hope to expand its reach and impact more lives in its goal of becoming a “bridge of opportunity” to move people out of poverty.

As CEO David Lapp explained, the new location will fill a need for the organization of getting the most from the food donations it receives. “We’d been wanting to get into food processing for a while and into dehydration,” he stated. “This will allow us to use bigger amounts of fresh produce and reduce

waste.” Dehydration will also make it easier for Blessings of Hope to ship food, both locally and internationally. The organization will also begin dehydrating food on a smaller scale at its East Petersburg location on Enterprise Court later this year.

Founded in 2006, Blessings of Hope started in a three-car garage in Ephrata. Aaron Fisher, the organization’s executive director, noticed large corporations were willing to donate semitruckloads of food, but most food banks could not handle that amount of donations. After planning and strategizing for four years, while also distributing small volumes of food, the organization moved into a 1,500-square-foot warehouse, committing to packing seven banana boxes of food weekly to send to a

local pastor for distribution. In 2011, the organization filled its first semi-truckload of food and shipped it to a Native American reservation in Minnesota. As the organization grew over the years, it purchased a 44,000-squarefoot warehouse in Leola and started its first satellite location in Kentucky.

“Our mission is to take food that large corporations are getting rid of and make it available to food pantries, outreach groups, nonprofits and others who need it, sharing the love of Jesus while giving out food,” Lapp stated. The organization delivers within a 200-mile radius of central Pennsylvania, as well as to organizations in Kentucky and Tennessee and some overseas locations. “We provided food to help with the war effort in Ukraine,” Lapp remarked. “We’ve shipped to Jordan, Iraq and Haiti.” With the addition of food dehydration capabilities, the organization hopes to expand its reach

even farther, he noted.

Blessings of Hope receives f ood from more than 200 sources and serves approximately 70,000 meals a day. The organization has more than 700 partner ministries that receive food, with almost half of its operating revenue generated by these partners.

To serve its partner ministries, Blessings of Hope operates Ministry Selection Centers where items can be selected for each nonprofit ministry. The Elizabethtown location will be the second Ministry Selection Center in Pennsylvania, joining the current location in Lancaster city.

Blessings of Hope staff members are in the process of settling the sale of the Elizabethtown location, and then the organization plans to complete several months of renovations before a tentative summer or early fall of 2023 opening.

“ We wanted to share a tool to reach visual learners,” said Jeremy Miller, founder and CEO of Poiema Visual Arts.

“The activity has the potential to greatly impact creatives. For the analytical, they can take written notes, and those who don’t want to participate have nothing to worry about, as the services haven’t changed at all.” Some churches elected to participate on one specific Sunday that aligned with their schedules in October, and others participated every Sunday of the month.

Poiema Visual Arts began by sending over 200 letters that invited churches to participate, and seven churches across four different counties stepped forward to use the technique. Miller noted that one participating church expressed a desire to inte-

grate Sketch It! Sundays more frequently and asked about other creatively guided opportunities for its congregants. A member of Poiema’s board of directors, who is a pastor at a church that utilized the program, said she was pleasantly surprised at the number of church members who participated and were excited to share their artwork after the service.

“I’m a pastor myself, and we like it when people look up at us during the service, but when that person leaves with that enthusiasm and realizes that this is an option for them to continue learning, what we’ve done is create a disciple of Christ,” said Miller. Miller has a background in the arts and Christian education, and for several years he struggled to combine his passion for art with his Christian faith.

Over two decades ago, Miller taught at Lancaster Bible College and first began to dream of creating a place f or visual artists to engage with Scripture. He started laying the foundation for what he called “biblical creative theology,” as his life took him down many different paths.

Miller spent time teaching overseas, attended seminary in Virginia and briefly lived in Texas before returning to Lancaster County. As his sons grew older, Miller realized that he needed a new direction, as he would no longer

need to homeschool them. “(God) gave me permission to take that box of metaphorical dreams off of the shelf and go through them,” said Miller.

Poiema Visual Arts was officially incorporated and opened its membership program in October 2021. The organization is currently based in Strasburg but is involved with churches across the county and beyond, including areas such as Hempfield, Manheim Township and York.

State Police To

Law Enforcement Training Program

T aking part in scenarios like a traffic stop, learning about weapon safety and criminal procedure and participating in fitness training are just some of the activities that youths can experience at the Pennsylvania State Police Hill Impact Program. The free 14-week course, which is open to young men and women ages 15 through 18, will take place at the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, 175 Hersheypark Drive, Hershey, on Tuesdays from Jan. 17 through April 18, 2023, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

“(We want youths to) come through this program and to see what the Pennsylvania State Police department has to offer,” said Trooper Clint Long, program director. “They (may) gain a love for the career and want to pursue that later in life. That is our goal.”

Students who register for

the program will receive matching T-shirts and hats to wear during the classes, as well as water bottles. Each session will include physical training (PT), followed by a time of instruction and hands-on activities.

“ We introduce them to paramilitary disciplinesmarching, standing at attention and saluting. We introduce them to physical fitness and we move into our law enforcement curriculum,” Long explained. “The first 30 minutes is a military drill and PT, and then there is an hour and a half of scenario-based training.”

Scenarios may include reenacting a traffic stop or responding to a mock call. “ We make it fun and interactive. We try and let the kids do a lot of hands-on stuff in a safe way,” said Long. “They are (learning) and having fun at the same time.”

This is the third session of

the Hill Impact Program, which is named for the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, known to locals as The Hill because of its location in Hershey. The course is open to students from all geographical locations. “For the first session, we had some students who drove three hours one way to attend,” Long pointed out.

He said that the students often come away from the program realizing that law enforcement officers have chosen their career because they want to serve the community. “As troopers, we put the community above ourselves.

It’s amazing how fast they learn that and how quickly they catch on,” Long said.

The program also encourages a relationship between young people and law enforcement officers. “We have a core group of instructors that will be here every Tuesday. The kids not only are familiar with the faces, they develop a mentorship out of it as

well,” Long noted. “We urge the kids if they have questions or need anything to reach out to us. We supply them with our contact information and we have question-and-answer sessions. It’s a great way for us to have that accessibility in the community.”

Long encourages students to register as soon as possible, since space is limited and spots fill up quickly. Those who complete the course will take part in a graduation ceremony and receive a certificate. For more information about the program and to obtain an application, contact Long at ra-sprecruiter-acad@pa.gov or 717-497-4577.

Volleyball Wins Districts; Soccer Falls in States

With a great team effort, the Black Knights came back from almost insurmountable odds to defeat Downingtown West in a PIAA class 3A girls’ volleyball match at Landisville on Tuesday, November 8. The Whippets won the first two

sets, putting Hempfield in the most difficult position.

Using the positive momentum near the end of their second loss helped the Black Knights (21-1) to come up with three straight wins by scores of 25-12, 25-20 and 15-8, right when it seemed there was no escaping the

Downingtown Blob.

The Hempfield onslaught included 18 kills each by Sarah Hess and Addison Leber. Melody Butzer dished out 41 assists and 15 digs while fellow junior Kate Howard led the team in digs with 24.

Hess also helped power Hempfield back with her five blocks.

Hempfield, while seeking the state championship, had already hoisted the District Three trophy only days earlier. On Thursday, November 3, Hempfield edged Wilson for the district’s Class 3A title in an intense 3-2 victory.

Hempfield, the district’s top-seeded team, also fell behind in this match with the Bulldogs grabbing a 2514 win. Following 25-13 and 25-19 victories by the Knights, the Bulldogs pulled even with an intense 25-22 victory, setting up the tiebreaker, which went to Hempfield 15-13.

Wilson, the sixth-seeded team in the brackets, was coming off a classic battle with second-ranked Central York in the semifinals (25-19, 18-25, 25-20, 24-26, 15-13),

improving to 20-3 prior to the battle with the Black Knights.

SOCCER

The Conestoga Pioneers managed to escape unscathed as the Hempfield boys’ soccer team came close to scoring on a few chances Tuesday afternoon, November 8, at Berwyn - the Pioneers’ home turf. Conestoga’s Diego Ramirez scored in the 30th minute to give the Pioneers a 1-0 edge in this Class 4A PIAA openinground playoff match. The District One runners-up managed to hang on to that lead,

ending Hempfield’s season with a 1-0 victory.

“We played really well in the first half,” said Hempfield head coach Mark Ashley. “We had three very good opportunities. Their keeper made a nice save on one of them. We also put one just wide and one on the crossbar.

“We had real good possession,” continued the coach. “I felt that by being able to move the ball and by us keeping the ball, it kept them from attacking - minimizing their chances.”

Defending PIAA Class 4A champion Conestoga (18-4) earned a spot in the state quarterfinals. The Black Knights (14-5-1) would have faced Lancaster-Lebanon League rival Warwick a fourth time this season, including the two regular-season meetings and a District Three playoff win, had they been able to get past the Pioneers.

The goal by Ramirez had enough of a curve on it to sneak into the corner of the net - beyond the reach of goalie Tate Roth.

“They had several long throwin’s into the box,” Ashley noted. “Their score was a clearance that bounced just at the top of the 18. Their guy was able to volley it just inside the post.”

Pioneers’ goalie Ryan Carella registered four saves in the shutout. Roth grabbed five saves for the Knights.

The Black Knights were coming off a tough loss in the District Three 4A title game at Eagle View Middle School in Mechanicsburg where they

faced the district’s top seed Central Dauphin for the championship on Saturday, November 5. Hempfield was awarded a penalty kick with eight minutes left in regulation. Devin Schmitt converted on the opportunity, giving the Knights a late 1-0 lead.

“It felt like we were going to close that game out,” Ashley said. “It gave us a boost of energy. We thought this was going to be it - we were going to get our district championship.”

In perhaps the most unlikely circumstance, the Rams tied the score when a free kick was saved by Roth but was put back in with under 10 seconds to go by Central Dauphin’s Konstantinos Bouboukas for the equalizer.

“A foul was called at the top of the 18,” Ashley explained. “The referee stopped the clock because the ball was kicked away.”

Roth did make a save on that last-ditch effort by the Rams “Tate was able to make a great save,” Ashley said. “But

their player ran to it and basically bicycled it toward the goal.”

The Rams and Knights played scoreless overtime periods until Central Dauphin finally claimed the district trophy by winning the penalty shootout 4-2 over the Knights.

Both goalkeepers saved the first penalty shot in the penalty shootout round.

“It was probably the toughest loss of my coaching career,” Ashley added.

Summing up the season, Ashley spoke about the senior leadership as well as the general “team-first” attitude by the Black Knights.

“A lot of veteran seniors helped carry us,” he commented. “Those guys will be missed. But they’re leaving a good legacy

“This was a very resilient group, who battled back from adversity,” he said of the 2022 squad. “We won 3-3 early in the season after being down 2-0 to Dallastown. It showed me they were able to overcome challenges. That was something that was huge for us in the playoffs.

“ We were very proud of the boys,” Ashley added. “They stayed committed to the team. Everyone played as a unit.”

CROSS COUNTRY

The Hempfield boys’ team finished fifth in the PIAA Class 3A cross country championship race on Saturday, November 5 at the Parkview course in Hershey.

North Allegheny’s squad finished atop the team standings with 85 points followed by

LaSalle, Penncrest and North Penn, which registered 192 points. Hempfield finished fifth with 198 team points.

Aidan Hodge concluded his high school cross country career by earning a medal at states. The senior secured sixth place with his pace at 16:19.20. Joseph Fahrney was also impressive, earning 43rd place at 17:13.50. Not far behind was sophomore Sam Meyer (51st, 17:20.90)

Also helping Hempfield finish strong was Isaiah Hollinger (17:55.60). Juniors Emerson Long (18:11.50) and Sam Freedman (18:43.00) were also in the top-200 as was senior Chris Titter (18:45.10)

In the girls’ race, Ella Wolfe claimed 66th place at 20:52.70.

Feeding The Hungry

“Nothing makes me happier than to see our clients,” said Danielle Peters, director of the Columbia Food Bank, “ but when someone says, ‘You’re not going to see me coming in here anymore,’ that’s music to my ears. Most people don’t want to lose a client, but for us, that means they are back on their feet.”

The Columbia Food Bank has been operating out of St. Paul Episcopal Church, 340 Locust St., for decades. “It started as an outreach of the church. The ladies did a hot lunch program over 40 years ago,” Peters stated. “Very shortly after starting that, they realized something a little more was needed.” The food bank began under the umbrella of the church, but in 2014, it became its own nonprofit organization, renting the space in the church’s parish hall.

“ We are not government supported at all,” said Peters. “ We depend on the kindness of the community to operate. We get donations from businesses, organizations and individuals.” Groups including the Boy Scouts, who donate items collected through Scouting for Food, help to keep the shelves stocked with nonperishable

items. The food bank relies on financial donations to provide ground beef, hot dogs, cheese, butter and eggs.

“ We also get donations of breads and sweets from Giant and Weis,” Peters commented. “We try to focus on healthy food, but every now and then, you need a cookie.”

Potential clients need to show one form of ID to receive food, and anyone in Columbia, Mountville, West Hempfield or Manor Township is eligible to use the food bank. If someone from another area comes in, though, Peters won’t turn him or her away.

“If you walk through those doors, you are going to walk out with groceries,” she shared, adding that if someone is from outside the service area, she will direct them to their closest food bank for future visits. The food bank staff and volunteers also provide information upon request about other community resources, such as health care or employment services.

Peters credits her co-director, Suzanne Ollar, with keeping track of the food bank’s numbers. From January through October of this year, the organization distributed more than 62,000 pounds of food, feeding 795 households and 1,863 individuals.

In the episode, the team of students highlighted several nonprofits and community organizations in Lancaster County, as well as last year’s ExtraGive event. They interviewed organizations such as Impact Missions, Columbia Food Bank, Lancaster EMS, Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, Horizon Initiative and Clare House.

Each student in the Hempfield Happenings crew is a member of the Communications Technology (CommTech) program at Hempfield, taught by Matthew Binder. “The goal of the classes is to turn students from media con-

sumers to media producers,” Binder said. There are several different classes that each target a different type of media, including graphic design, marketing and social media. Before students participate in Hempfield Happenings, they take part in producing daily announcements for the school to prepare them for a higher level of television production.

Hempfield Happenings first came to the school in the late ’90s and was a breakthrough in program offerings at the time. With the advent of accessible online streaming platforms like YouTube, the program is able to reach a wider audience today. Each episode airs on the local TV station, Comcast cable network channel 66, and is published to the Hempfield Happenings YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/user /HempfieldHappenings.

“When it comes to any kind of video we submit, the students have the final say,” said Binder. “I believe strongly in a student-run program, and we set a precedent for an open forum.”

Clients can visit the food bank once a month, where they are given bags of food based on household size, along with toiletries such as soap, toothpaste or toilet paper.

“There is such a need for this right now,” Peters said. “Rent is through the roof. Gas prices are high. Most of the people who come to us are working. They are just trying to feed their families.”

Peters said the success of the food bank is due to the commitment of her volunteers and the generosity of the community. “I hate hearing the numbers of how much food we’ve given out, because when I hear them, I start to panic that we won’t have enough,” Peters said, but she finds comfort in the miracle of the loaves and the fishes, noting, “We have never had to turn anyone away.”

The Columbia Food Bank is open from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. It is located at the rear of the church. For more information, call 717449-5101.
