Mychal’s Message Slates Two Performances Due to popular demand in its previous four years, consistently selling out the theater for its one-night engagements, the fifth annual “Wish” production hosted by nonprofit organization Mychal’s Message has added a second performance. Dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the show will start at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9, and Monday, Dec. 10, at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre, 510 Centerville Road, Lancaster. This year’s show has been conceived, written, choreographed, and performed entirely by volunteer youths. It features 36 performers from kindergarten to college who have been rehearsing since September. Past audience members have remarked about the professional quality of the production by these children and teenagers whose collective experience includes performances at American Music Theatre, Sight & Sound, Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre,
and the Fulton Theatre, among many others. “Wish” is far more than just dinner and a show. As the performers relate, the production is a chance to bring Christmas wishes to children who might not otherwise have them. “It helps poor people by giving them hope and love from Jesus,” said 8-yearold Allegra Essis, a student at Saint Leo the Great School, noting that Jesus’ birth is celebrated on Christmas. “Being part of the ‘Wish’ program has made me want to reach out to those who are less fortunate,” said Cate Chadwick, 14, a student at Conestoga Valley High School and one of eight lead dancers in this year’s show. “(It also gives) me more opportunity to do what I love dance and perform with friends.” Everly Foster, 13, a student at Camp Hill Middle School, travels a moderate distance to be part of “Wish” but said
she would not miss it. “Being part of ‘ Wish’ means celebrating the true meaning of Christmas,” she said. In the upcoming presentation, Everly has a solo in “The Little Drummer Boy,” as well as a duet, “Isle of Hope,” that she
predicted will be a tear-jerker for the audience. Everly said she enjoys being at “Wish” rehearsals. “When I’m with my ‘Wish’ family, it reminds me of what is important in life,” she remarked. See Mychal’s Message pg 6
Irish music will be presented at the Ware Center during “Irish Christmas in America” on Wednesday, Nov. 28. The performance will also include Irish old-style dancing.
UPCOMING MEETING
Lancaster Christian Women’s Club will meet at noon on Wednesday, Dec. 5, at Bent Creek Country Club, 620 Bent Creek Drive, Lititz. Doris Ortman will speak on “Riding Through Life With Laughter and Tears.” Attendees will share their favorite holiday ornament and memory. All women are invited. There is a cost to attend. For reservations, call Pat at 717-951-0773.
Area youths will present the fifth annual “Wish” production to benefit Mychal’s Message on Dec. 9 and 10 at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre.

“Rock the Church Lights Up Christmas” will be presented on Friday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 501 E. Orange St., Lancaster. The event will feature local musician Liz Fulmer, the ensembles from St. Anthony of Padua and San Juan Bautista churches, and Resurrection Catholic School’s student choir, the Singing Saints. The concert will be the fourth iteration of the event featuring music groups from city churches.
Fulmer, worship and pastoral assistant at Grandview United Methodist Church, grew up Catholic and her love of music came early. She has released three CDs. The St. Anthony group plays a wide spectrum of music, from chants to up-tempo, contemporary gospel music. The San Juan Bautista musicians blend English and Spanish hymns and contemporary Christian pieces. Rock the Church was named in
2015, its inaugural year, when Resurrection Catholic School’s theme was “Resurrection Rocks.” The event will be free, though
donations may be offered. For more information, readers may call 717-392-3083 or visit www.rcspa.org.

“We organize events and fundraisers that support our local and foreign missions and support the church and our local community,” said committee member Lori Gee. “The other thing you can identify these women as is the best cooks in Washington Boro, and I don’t live in Washington Boro,” Wolf said with a laugh. The committee members, along with other members of the church, will focus their talents on preparing baked goods, soups, and other foods for the church’s annual Christmas bazaar. The event will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the kitchen will offer breakfast sandwiches, hot dogs, beef barbecue, grilled cheese sandwiches, and freshly fried cinnamon breadsticks. Soup varieties will include chicken corn, beef vegetable, French onion, and tomato prepared following a recipe from a Civil War-era cookbook. The soups may be purchased in small quantities or in quarts. Preorders for quarts of soup will be appreciated, and folks may contact committee member Tabetha Young at 717-341-7783 or jty@embarqmail.com to place orders. The baked goods table is slated to include buckeye candy, sweet breads, pies, cookies, fudge, and more. “You never know what people will bring,” observed committee member Petra King. The bazaar itself will look a bit different than it has in previous years. “We’re trying something new this year,” committee member Diana Boswa remarked. “Rather than asking people to donate things (to sell), we’re bringing in vendors.” The vendors will sell crafts, jewelry, cookware and other kitchen supplies, clothing,
books, totes, and handbags. There will also be a white elephant table. Santa Claus will visit the bazaar from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. He will pose for photos and give children candy canes and small gifts. Proceeds from the bazaar will go to the congregation’s general missions efforts. The community is also invited to attend the Washington Boro UMC’s Advent festival on Saturday, Nov. 24, at 5 p.m. Originally, the festival was started as a celebration while church members worked together to decorate the sanctuary and other parts of the building for Christmas. Now that a church member has claimed that task, all that remains of the festival is the celebration. Thus, on Nov. 24, festival attendees may partake of a baked potato bar and make a Christmas craft. There is no charge to attend, but folks are asked to register by calling the church at 717-684-9309 or emailing Wolf at pastorwashingtonboroumc@comcast.net. Other holiday events on the congregation’s calendar include a children’s Christmas cantata on Sunday, Dec. 9, at 10:30 a.m.; Christmas caroling at area homes and health care facilities on Sunday, Dec. 16, at a time to be announced; and a Christmas Eve service at 5 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 24. All are welcome to participate. Folks may also attend Sunday school at 9:15 a.m. and worship services at 8:15 and 10:30 a.m. A nursery is available. “We have a lot of fun when we do stuff. We’re a fun and friendly church,” Boswa said. “We’re small, but when there’s a need, we pull together to meet that need.” To learn more about the church, readers may visit www.washingtonboroumc.com.

LancasterHistory.org’s Yuletide at Wheatland will run through Saturday, Dec. 29. Attendees will tour the presidential mansion, located at 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster, and learn about the multi-layered history of the house and its occupants, as well as how Christmas celebrations changed over the course of 60 years in America. Tours will be available Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. During Yuletide at Wheatland, visitors will learn about three distinct eras in the mansion’s history through three festively decorated period rooms: the 1860s, 1880s, and 1920s. These period rooms will take visitors from the year 1860, when President Buchanan celebrated a modest Presbyterian Christmas at Wheatland, into the late Victorian era, when Buchanan’s niece Harriet Lane Johnston owned the house and would have celebrated a classic Dickens-style Christmas with her family, to 1920, when Wheatland was occupied by George B. Willson and his family and served as a space to celebrate a festive ’20s Christmas reflective of the early 20th-century consumer culture in America. Tickets will be discounted for children ages 6 to 13. Admission is free for children
age 5 and under with the purchase of an adult admission. In addition to Yuletide at Wheatland, LancasterHistory.org will offer a special evening event, Tours and Tinsel, on Tuesdays, Dec. 11 and 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely tour of Wheatland at their own pace, along with refreshments. Live music will be provided by The Tuck Ryan Band on Dec. 11 and Temple Avenue on Dec. 18. Separate tickets are required. Free Holiday Story Times will be offered on Saturdays, Dec. 1 to 29, at 11 a.m. Children will be introduced to historical themes and read a holiday book aloud. After the reading, children will be invited to stay for a holiday activity or craft inspired by the day’s theme or book. The program is designed for children ages 4 through 9, but all children are welcome. There is no cost to attend, but those interested are required to make advance reservations. Tickets for Yuletide at Wheatland, Tours and Tinsel, and Holiday Story Times are available at www.lancasterhistory.org or by calling 717-392-4633. Advance tickets are strongly recommended for all programs, as walk-in space is not guaranteed.

Tommy originally came to the museum for a summer camp in 2013. While there, he met senior astronomy educator Mike “Cosmic Mike Smith, who led the campers through a program titled “Cosmic Mike’s Mission to the Red Planet, which focused on NASA’s Curiosity Rover. It was this encounter that sparked Tommy’s interest in Mars and has led to him creating a planetarium show. He plans to pursue a career in aerospace engineering.

Beards for Brothers will benefit from a fundraiser during the month of November. Local police departments and first responders in Lancaster County will join to raise funds. The campaign was started by Officer Bill Watt, who heads up the East Hempfield Police Department K-9 program. Each year, officers select a first responder or organization from the community who is currently battling cancer or provides care to those battling cancer. This year, the campaign will raise money for Officer Wendell Metzler of the New Holland Borough Police Department, a 25-year veteran of law enforcement, a longtime volunteer and an emergency medical technician. In June, it was discovered he had stage IV melanoma. Metzler has undergone numerous radiation treatments and is currently receiving aggressive immunotherapy treatments to battle the disease. Metzler has been unable to serve his community, and the cost of treatment is significant.
Throughout November, Faulkner Chevrolet staff members will also grow out their facial hair and collect funds through the program’s GoFundMe page. The goal is to make a sizeable donation and join members of Akron Borough, Columbia Borough, East Cocalico Township, East Hempfield Township, Elizabethtown Borough, Lititz Borough, Lancaster City, Manheim Borough, Manor Township, Millersville University, New Holland Borough, Southern Regional, Strasburg Borough, West Hempfield Township, West Lampeter Township, and Quarryville Borough police departments, along with Lancaster County Park Rangers andvolunteer firefighters, EMS, and dispatchers from throughout Lancaster County, to raise funds for Metzler and his family. For more details, readers may contact Eileen Culp at 717-723-5240 or eculp@faulknerchevrolet.com. To make a donation, readers may visit www.gofundme.com/beards-for -brothers-2018.

Mychal’s Message from pg 1 Working in partnership with the Lancaster Office for Displaced Families, Mychal’s Message selects local families to receive a full-course Christmas dinner and gifts for their children on the morning of Christmas Eve. Each child receives one item they have said they would most like to receive on Christmas. At the top of this year’s wish list are Nerf toys, Lego sets, board games, and jewelry-making kits. All funds raised from “Wish’” ticket sales directly benefit the selected families and children. Tickets are required to attend the dinner and the show and may be purchased by calling the box office at 717-898-1900 or visiting www.dutchapple.com and clicking
on “Special Events.” Mychal’s Message was founded by Shannon Hickey Lapp in 2002 when she was 11 years old. Her simple idea to collect socks for the homeless grew into a ministry that aims to meet the needs of the homeless and poor. To date, Mychal’s Message has distributed more than 500,000 new items to men, women, and children including coats and blankets, diapers and toiletries, sleeping mats and pillows, hats and gloves, toys and teddy bears, underwear and socks, and more. For more information, readers may find Mychal’s Message on Facebook or visit www.mychalsmessage.org.

Landisville Middle School English language arts teacher Scott Feifer has been recognized with an award for his Writing Circles program by the Juvenile Detention Centers and Alternative Programs (JDCAP) Association. The program had been nominated for JDCAP’s Ongoing Program of the Year Award in Pennsylvania. Feifer has been volunteering his services at the Lancaster County Youth Intervention Center for 15 years and spends an estimated three to six hours each week at the intervention facility offering his programs to residents in both detention and shelter, making sure he gets to
meet with each on-level group. According to Lancaster County Youth Intervention Center program director Bryan Hubbard, Feifer is known for his ability to bring out the best in others. Through the Writing Circles program, Feifer aims to inspire residents to express their feelings, thoughts, and emotions and to begin to process difficult issues. During one of his sessions with the residents, Feifer led them through the reading of Walt W hitman’s poem “Miracles and they then used the poem to create their own collaborative “Miracles poem.
