Holiday Shoppe will highlight student-run businesses
VOL XXXIX • NO 33
The human element of history BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
n Friday, Dec. 1, the Holiday Shoppe will return to the Franklin Gymnasium at Hempfield High School, 200 Stanley Ave., Landisville. From 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., various cash-only stands will vend holiday items and treats in the gym, and the stands will highlight the efforts of multiple classes in the Hempfield School District.
O
Students will sell a wide variety of items, including food, holiday decorations and handmade crafts. For each stand, every aspect of the business process is handled by the students; the young entrepreneurs are responsible for the creation of their products, logistical planning, marketing and managing transactions at their stands for the event. Although the groups of kids are supervised by teachers throughout the process, they are given the freedom and authority to create the business. Participating students will range from those in elementary school to seniors at Hempfield High School. This is the eighth year Hempfield
Hempfield High School students (from left) James Geiger, Malorie Bitts and Kyle McIntosh will operate businesses alongside other young vendors at the Holiday Shoppe.
High School has hosted the Holiday Shoppe, which features 20 businesses in total. The event sees a high
number of patrons every year, including staff members from schools across the district and
individuals who are looking to support the young merchants and get some Christmas shopping done See Holiday Shoppe pg 4

By day, Eric Schubert of Lancaster is a forensic genealogist. By night, the 22-year-old is still conducting research and working on genealogy, but in a different way. Schubert has been fascinated by the subject since he was 9 years old, and his passion stems from one thing: the human element. “Someone might walk past a building and have no idea of its history,” Schubert said. “But you can write a 20-page narrative on the life of someone who lived there and what they did to shed some light on their life and give context to the present day.” Schubert, who is originally from southern New Jersey, graduated from Elizabethtown College in May after studying public history. Schubert first visited Lancaster as a child to see his older brother, who attended the same college. As Schubert spent more time in the area to attend his brother’s track meets and other school events, he said he fell in love with Lancaster and its history. Although many of Schubert’s family members assumed his college application for Elizabethtown was inspired by his brother’s choice, he primarily attributed it to his fondness and familiarity of the area. A few months ago, Schubert moved into the North Prince

sponsorships. Troop 64 then resolved to make sure every veteran’s grave got a wreath. Since the second year the troop became involved at Indiantown Gap, the cemetery has had enough wreaths for every veteran’s grave. Five years ago, the troop decided to bring Wreaths Across America to several local cemeteries where the Scouts were already placing flags for Memorial Day. These locations are the church cemeteries at Landisville Mennonite, Salunga Mennonite, Salem United Church of Christ (UCC) in Rohrerstown,
Landisville Reformed, Zion Historical, Salunga Brethren, and Conestoga United Methodist Church as well as Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens. Troop 64’s goal is to honor all veterans in these cemeteries with a wreath, and the Scouts hope to expand their efforts to additional local cemeteries, as well. Wreaths Across America’s mission is to remember, honor and teach. The organization memorializes veterans by saying their names, placing wreaths on their graves, cleaning their graves and saluting the veterans, and Wyatt Wharton displayed one of the wreaths honoring veterans.

Street Historic District in downtown Lancaster city, and there are few places that are better suited for a man of his interests. The rich history of the city ensures that Schubert doesn’t have to look very hard to further his quest to explore pieces of individual human history that may otherwise be forgotten. After Schubert moved into his apartment, he immediately began to look into his new neighborhood’s history. He discovered old documents and layouts of his residence, and in the process he learned that many of the buildings on his street are former tobacco warehouses. Schubert also found an old insurance map that revealed the existence of a bakery next door to his apartment, which was unmentioned in other documents. Much of Schubert’s time was spent digging through the work of the historians who officially designated his district as historic in 1989. “When you look into old paperwork, you can bring new context to it,” Schubert said. “There is so much context around me that I had no idea about until I moved in and started researching. It’s the little things.”
The Lancaster Creative Factory, located at the rear of 580 S. Prince St., Lancaster, will host its annual holiday sale on Friday, Nov. 24, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, Nov. 25, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Offered for sale will be pottery, glass, jewelry and wood items. Off-street parking will be available. For more information, visit www.lancaster creativefactory.org or call 717-676-0600.
Giant to donate Thanksgiving turkeys Eric Schubert gives a presentation at a historic preservation event at Elizabethtown College in April.
Using the historic district’s official documentation, old insurance records and miscellaneous files, Schubert is continuing to weave a complete narrative together to share with others. Schubert remains involved with Elizabethtown College’s research in other historic towns such as Marietta, and he plans to keep an eye out for more projects that could uncover the secret history tucked away on dusty shelves.
The Giant Company has announced that it will donate a record number of 15,000 Thanksgiving turkeys to food banks and community partners in the Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia communities it serves. Turkeys will be donated to nearly 40 local food banks and community partners. Giant Company team members will once again volunteer at food banks packing hunger relief boxes and organizing and restocking shelves in advance of the busy holiday

Local residents attend National Acolyte Festival
Holiday Shoppe from pg 1
Fifteen acolytes from five parishes in the Lancaster Convocation attended the National Acolyte Festival on Oct. 7. Along with their respective clergy, vergers and parents, as well as a few grandparents, the acolytes traveled to the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., to participate in the festival and a grand procession. The event was the first National Acolyte Festival since 2019, when the festivities went on hiatus due to COVID-19. The cathedral was filled with more than 500 acolytes from across the country and included groups from various denominations. After the procession, which included

Some customers travel from as far as Harrisburg to purchase goods at the event. “It’s a neat opportunity for a lot of these students who move from building to building; they get to see old classmates and teachers from previous years,” said Ann Jurgensen, a learning support paraeducator at the high school. Jurgensen has been assisting students as they prepare for the event. In each group, some students prefer to manage a specific area of their business model. James Geiger, a freshman, said he looks forward to the hands-on side of things, such as selling his product to his stand’s visitors and operating the cash register. “I like working with the customers and meeting new people,” added Geiger, who has participated in the Holiday Shoppe since he was in seventh grade. The young salesman has been working on decorative wall art to sell on Dec. 1. Eleventh-grader Malorie Bitts will participate in the event as part of Knights of the Red Tablet and Hempfield

acolytes, clergy and vergers from every parish in attendance, attendees enjoyed worship, music, prayer, a message and Communion. Attendees then had opportunities to explore various workshops, including Now and Forever Windows Activities, Liturgical Streamer Making and the
Magnet Makers. Bitts’ products will include handmade magnets with unique themes such as sports teams and aquatic animals, as well as a “honey to-do list.” The checklist is designed to be given to the customers’ significant others to express certain things the recipient can do for him or her. “My favorite part of the Holiday Shoppe is seeing how many people have come to support us,” Bitts said. Senior Kyle McIntosh said he loves to visit his fellow students’ stand to buy Christmas gifts, but he also enjoys running his own stand. McIntosh will sell hot dogs, coffee, hot chocolate and doughnuts during the event in addition to decorated coasters. “I like everything, but especially making hot dogs and meeting people,” McIntosh said. The proceeds of each stand will support students’ field trips, school supplies and special classroom events. So drop in to the Holiday Shoppe this year, where you can finish your Christmas shopping and support a few young entrepreneurs.

The youth choir will entertain at St. Peter Catholic Church’s Christmas Bazaar.
St. Peter Catholic Church has held the bazaar for more than 30 years, Storm said. It is sponsored by the Parish Council of Catholic Women, with assistance from the men of the parish. Proceeds benefit a variety of organizations, including Our Lady of the Angels School, the Madonna Plan, A Woman’s Concern and
Water for Life. “The bazaar is far enough ahead of Christmas that people can find something for people on their Christmas list, whether it’s something handmade or something from the white reindeer stand,” Storm said. “People come back to the bazaar year after year, and they always enjoy it.”

The members of St. Peter Catholic Church are a creative bunch, whether it’s cooking or crafting, and the public gets to benefit from that. The church will hold its annual Christmas Bazaar on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Dec. 3, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Parish Center at Second and Union streets, Columbia. “We have some excellent seamstresses and crafters in our parish,” noted Claire Storm, who is helping to organize the bazaar. “We will have a variety of handmade items and themed gift baskets, and we’ll have a white reindeer table, with new or slightly used things for sale.” On Sunday, a full-course baked penne with meatballs
dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The dinner may be enjoyed on-site or taken to go. Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance at the church office. “The meal will be created by some of the Italian families in our parish, so it will be good, authentic, Italian food,” Storm said, noting that members of the Loreto family, famous locally for their “gravy” or pasta sauce, are among the parishioners. “I know people will enjoy this meal.” A variety of baked goods made by members of the congregation will also be available for purchase. Beginning at noon on Sunday, the youth choir, under the direction of Carole Bitts, will entertain. People will be encouraged to sing along to Christmas carols.

If a rechargeable battery becomes damaged, it can cause a chemical reaction that creates a spark or explosion. Rechargeable batteries in the waste stream are prone to damage due to the impact from equipment and machinery during the waste management process. Fires in garbage

Tenfold announced the completion of a renovation project of a multi-unit city property, funded through a partnership with a private donor, Dr. Frank D. Carano. The project resulted in four additional housing units for low-income renters in Lancaster city. Tenfold purchased the property in 2005 with a
vision to renovate it and turn it into affordable housing units. This vision was brought to fruition when Carano offered to fund the renovation. Tenfold continues to seek creative solutions to address the housing affordability crisis in Lancaster County and the surrounding area.
