he National Honor Society chapter at Dayspring Christian Academy, 120 College Ave., Mountville, will once again partner with the Mountville Lions Club to arrange its annual food drive on Friday, Dec. 8, from 8 a.m. to noon. The drive will be held at Mountville Church of the Brethren, 60 Clay St., Mountville, and all of its donations will benefit the Columbia Food Bank. During the drive, a truck provided by local real estate agent Craig Hartranft will be stationed in the parking lot. Students in Dayspring’s chapter of the National Honor Society and members of the Lions Club will work together to fill the truck with donations until the end of the drive, and they will also assist local residents with unloading their cars when dropping off goods. This is the third year that the school has partnered with the Lions Club for the drive, which obtained more than 1,700 donations last year. Every year, Dayspring students are encouraged to support the drive through various incentives. Classes

that secure an average of four donations per student are rewarded with a special dress day later in the year, when the kids are permitted to wear casual clothing in place of their standard uniforms. The class with the highest average of donated items is traditionally thanked with a pizza party. “In years past, we have had amazing success,” said Jayden Yon, president of the Dayspring’s chapter of the National Honor Society. “I am excited to see how both the Mountville community and the Dayspring community come together this year to bless the Columbia Food Bank.” The food drive was first held in 2021 after Lions Club member Jeff Weinman suggested the partnership to Dayspring. The student side of the initial drive was manned by the school’s student government, but the endeavor was taken over by students in the National Honor See Dayspring pg 4

Red Rose sets winter holiday ice skating recital BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD

As winter rolls around each year, food banks and community outreach programs across the country are often met with a stark increase in the demand for their services. While the holiday season is a time of celebration for many, the cold weather and additional expenses that accompany this time of year can prove challenging for others. To combat this seasonal challenge, Water Street Mission launched its

annual food drive on Nov. 1, and the organization is once again calling on Lancaster County residents to band together in support of their neighbors. “We already started to see an increase in demand for our programs in September, and we’re expecting another influx as the months get colder,” said Matt Clement, director of marketing for Water Street Mission. “We didn’t quite meet our goal last year, but we’re thankful that we got close. In September, Circle Legacy Center reintroduced its monthly programs for the first time in multiple years. The organization was founded in 2007 by Victoria Valentine of Millersville with the primary goal of educating the local community on

the culture and history of Native Americans, in addition to drawing attention to the modern concerns they face. Although Circle Legacy Center has no official headquarters, it often partners with organizations such as Blue Rock Heritage Center in Washington Boro and the Conestoga Area

Historical Society. The nonprofit’s regular programs are open to the public, and they are held on the second Friday of each month at Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster, 328 W. Orange St., Lancaster. Although each of the program’s meetings have always highlighted a specific issue that relates to Native American communities, Valentine decided to shift the upcoming session to focus on helping those who are experiencing homelessness in the city. On Friday, Dec. 8, from 6:30 to 9 p.m., Circle Legacy Center will host Dave Costarella at Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster. Costarella will share information about two programs he has created to support those struggling with housing in the area. Costarella created the first program, My People on the Streets, eight years ago to provide homeless Lancastrians with supplies such as food and warm clothing. Costarella created the program after he heard someone was handing out sandwiches at Binns Park downtown. “I never knew how

many folks were there who were in need,” Costarella said. “I saw the need, enjoyed the people, and I just wanted to make sure they knew someone out there loved them.” In April, Costarella partnered with Lancaster County Food Hub to create a second program, Hands Up Partners. Through the collaboration, the nonprofit organization raises money that Costarella uses to provide people without housing with a weekly stipend; in exchange, the recipients join him in cleaning projects at local parks and community areas. “The program has helped a lot of participants find jobs by acting as a stepping stone,” said Costarella. Valentine and Costarella met several years ago through their shared passion for community service. The program on Dec. 8 will be Circle Legacy Center’s first official collaboration with Costarella, but he has worked with Valentine on various projects in the past to advocate for Lancaster County’s homeless population. Valentine recently contacted the city council to raise awareness for issues such as a lack of public

City officials have since placed a portable bathroom in the parking lot of an emergency shelter on North Prince Street, which is maintained by participants in the Hands Up Partners program. “We’re all very concerned about our homeless neighbors living on the streets, especially with winter

medalist, has been coaching the youngest skaters as they prepare for the show. Dressed as Santa’s reindeer, the tiny tots will perform a number alongside Scudner for the show. “They’ve been practicing the choreography for the past four weeks during their lessons,” Scudner said. “They’re really excited to show off the skills they’ve been learning to their families.” The Learn to Skate program has continued to grow and maintain a high retention rate since its return earlier this year, and its popularity served as the catalyst for Red Rose to organize a holiday recital. Each skater was given an opportunity to participate at no extra cost to allow as many new skaters to show the skills they’ve been sharpening on the ice. “Some of my top skaters stepped on the ice for the first time in April,” Scudner said. “People keep coming back because they love it, and we’re so happy to bring it back to the Lancaster community. Each of the 40 participants in the recital is a member of either Red Rose or its Learn to Skate program, which the club revived in April after a hiatus caused by the COVID19 pandemic. The program offers ice skating classes at Regency Ice Rink that are open to adults as well as children age 3 or older. The classes focus on teaching new skaters the fundamentals of the sport through a curriculum that is supplied by Learn to Skate USA. As a result of the program’s accessibility across a wide range of age groups and skill levels, the recital will include adult skaters as well as performers as young as 3 years old. Some of the performers laced up their skates for the first time as recently as November. The show will include two group numbers, in addition to various solo showcases and duets. Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, will present John Rutter’s “Gloria” on Sunday, Dec. 10, at 6 p.m. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. The performance will include adult and children’s choirs, soloists, players of brass instruments, and readers. Rutter grew up living over the Globe pub in London. As a young chorister at Highgate School in the 1960s, he took part in the first recording of Benjamin Britten’s “War Requiem.” Rutter later founded his own choir, the Cambridge Singers, which has recorded a plethora of sacred repertoire, including his own works, under his personal label, Collegium Records. “Gloria” is a musical setting of the Gloria portion of the Mass in Latin and was composed by Rutter in 1974. The text is structured in three sections, and the music is scored for choir, brass, percussion, and organ. This dramatic backdrop the carols - will showcase Scriptures - the lessons - read at various intervals throughout the evening, a Christmas tradition of “Lessons and Carols” observed each year. These passages from the Bible lead listeners through the Christmas story. The first movement declares “Gloria in excelsis Deo!” (Glory to God in the highest), which the angels shared with shepherds according to Luke 2. The
