Santa in the Park will return to the East Petersburg Borough building, 6051 Pine St., East Petersburg, on Saturday, Dec. 10, from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. The holiday event will be free to attend and include a variety of family-friendly activities for community residents.

Parents will have an opportunity to take family pictures with Santa and a festive backdrop, which will include a life-size reindeer model. A photographer will be available to take pictures of families for a set fee. Children will also be able to partake in sweet treats from Mrs. Claus’s Kitchen, which will offer holiday cookies and hot chocolate provided by Geneva Bakery Cafe for free.

Santa in the Park will include a model train table and dollhouse display. Each car in the train set is sponsored by a local business, which it is then modeled after. The

dollhouse display will feature festive decorations along with dolls and miniatures dressed up in holiday attire. At the reindeer food bar, children will have an opportunity to assemble treats for Santa’s reindeer, with supplies provided by Wee Care Day School. The event is run primarily by volunteers; students from Hempfield High School’s Anchor Club will assist with the Santa photo opportunity and reindeer food station.

This year is the first time that Santa in the Park will be held since before the COVID-19 pandemic, as the borough stopped hosting the event due to safety concerns. The tradition itself began around seven years ago as part of the borough’s effort to introduce more familyfriendly community events. “Our goal is to provide free events and safe places for families in the community to meet their neighbors and talk with friends,” said Kristin Troop, chairperson of the East Petersburg events committee. “The

best aspect of all of our events is the opportunities they provide for people to have fun and be a part of.”

Santa in the Park is one event in the East Petersburg Day series that the borough organizes each year. The series begins with a car show in May and ends in December, featuring an event each month in between. The events include yard sales, barbecues, movie nights, fireworks, parades, carnival rides and the annual Blues Fest. “Each year we look to expand on events to make them more family friendly. It’s a great way to know people in the community, and a lot of kids that participate in these events often return as volunteers,” said Troop.

The events committee works closely with the borough to coordinate events, clean parks and manage the equipment needed for the event. Troop noted that the committee has plans to diversify East Petersburg’s park attractions and will add more events in the near future.

“We take care of the Earth, and it takes care of us,” said Grace Julian, co-founder of The Edible Classroom, an organization that seeks to bring the world of gardening into classrooms across the county. “We focus on the goodness of our engagement with the Earth.”

The Edible Classroom has a three-pronged mission: to cultivate

academic achievement, healthy lifestyles and environmental stewardship, which it accomplishes in a variety of ways with the garden as its backdrop. The organization partners with schools to provide lessons during the school day, resources for teachers and students and afterschool programs, and currently it works with 15 schools in Lancaster County.

In the spring, summer, and fall seasons, The Edible Classroom offers schools 40-minute curriculum-based lessons, where students are able to get their hands on the process of growing and harvesting produce directly. If a school has an existing garden, students can immediately begin planting, tending, and harvesting crops, with the goal of enjoying the fruits of their labor and learning along the way. “We come into schools as a partner organization to do whatever they determine,” said Julian. “This can include many different things depending on the school.”

There’s no doubt Blayre Wright is a great baker. In fact, some might say the owner of Flouretta Sweet in Manheim is scary good. So good, in fact, that she won Food Network’s “Halloween Baking Championship” on Oct. 31.

“I was over-the-moon proud,” Wright said of winning the competition that pitted her against 11 other bakers in a series of challenges. “I certainly did not walk into this experience expecting to get as far as I did, let alone win the See Baker pg 3

Beginning in March, students start preparing the soil and planting the crops, which they maintain through the end of the school year in May. By the beginning of summer, most crops are ready for students to harvest and eat. Over the summer season, the organization offers programs for students to continue their work as gardeners.

In the fall, The Edible Classroom begins a 10-week period alongside the start of the school year, where students can enjoy the many types of produce that thrive until the beginning of November. During the winter months, the organization takes a break from its regular education programs to develop new curricula, which change yearly. The basic principles of each curriculum remain the same, but each one has a different focus and plant material.

Beth Horst and Julian planted the seeds for The Edible Classroom several years ago, after they created gardens at their kids’ respective elementary schools. “We saw the benefit in the community of having an on-site field trip that the whole school could visit. As parent volunteers, we realized we didn’t want to keep it at only two schools,” said Julian. The Edible Classroom bloomed in 2017, when it was incorporated as a nonprofit

organization.

As Horst and Julian developed the nonprofit and partnered with more schools, they realized the benefit of not only serving elementary students during the school day but offering opportunities for students of all ages across different school districts. Volunteer opportunities, learning experiences for agriculture and science students and projects such as constructing garden beds and facilities are some of the ways students can become involved with The Edible Classroom.

entire competition.” Instead, Wright noted, she concentrated on doing her best. “My goal from the start was to prove to my clients, community, family, friends and myself that I was well-rounded and could do more than cakes, and I really feel like I did that.”

A 2009 graduate of Hempfield High School, Wright grew up in Landisville but attended church at Salem United Methodist Church in Manheim for most of her childhood. She and her husband moved to Manheim in 2019. Wright also graduated from The Culinary Institute of America with a bachelor’s degree in baking and pastry arts management. Her business, Flouretta Sweet, has been open for five years. It’s named after her grandmothers - Flora and Loretta. Wright specializes in whimsically modern wedding cakes and miniature desserts, created in a private studio attached to her home. Her clientele is primarily engaged couples, and she also offers private baking lessons.

Food Network associates reached out to Wright after seeing her work on Instagram, and they invited the baker to try out for the show. Her audition included several rounds of interviews as well as the creation and presentation of dessert items. “I was thrilled when I received the call to be on the show,” she said.

Although Wright had participated in cake decorating competitions in the past, she had never been on TV, and the show was her first time competing in a multi-episode, multi-challenge competition. She said her favorite part of the show, which filmed in Tennessee over a few weeks this past spring, was meeting her castmates. “You would think that being on a competition show, people would be very cutthroat,” she remarked. “Instead, the cast was extremely supportive of each other. We became a family.” The hardest part of the competition, she said, was managing the pressure and stress. “Competing took a lot of mental stamina, both in the kitchen and offscreen too,” she stated, noting that most of the competitors also own businesses, so they had to focus for the show and make sure things were running

smoothly back home.

Of the challenges she faced and the creations she made on the show, Wright said her favorite was a black wedding cake she made for

the finale. “Wedding cakes are my thing, and I love making spooky, moody cakes, so this was right up my alley,” she recalled.

When she’s not baking, Wright enjoys shopping, eating baked goods she didn’t have to make and

playing with her cats, Poppy and Persimmon. She also loves to take trips to Disney, adding, “I’m a huge Disney parks nerd.”

As she demonstrated on the “Halloween Baking Championship,” Wright is a natural in the kitchen. “I love that baking requires attention to detail, but can also provide an extremely freeing, creative outlet,” she said. “And you end up with a delicious treat at the end of the process … hopefully!”
