OnDec. 2, Dayspring Christian Academy, 120 College Ave., Mountville, combined forces with the Mountville Lions Club to organize a food drive in support of the Columbia Food Bank. This is the second year that the school has

held a drive with the Lions Club, and the drive acquired more than 1,700 donations.

The food drive began when Jeff Weinman, a member of the Mountville Lions Club, contacted the school to pitch the idea last year. The Dayspring student government assisted with the drive for

the first year, but when its members were unable to help organize it this year, the students in NHS stepped in to lend a hand.

“It worked out beautifully,” said Donna Hurley, director of curriculum and instruction at Dayspring and an adviser of its NHS chapter. “We had one year behind us, so we had

some clues as to what goals to set and what strategies to use.” The students at Dayspring were given a special incentive to reach a certain number of donations. If a class met the donation goal, it would earn a special dress day when its students could shirk their regular uniforms and wear other clothes to school.

“W hen it comes to fighting, you have to deal with what opportunities present themselves,” said Christian Carr of Landisville. “I like to display my ability to control and submit the people I fight.” Carr’s 2-0 professional record consisting of two grappling submissions substantiates his claim.

Carr began wrestling at the age of 4 in Penn Manor School District and switched to Hempfield a few years later. As a young child, he attended a co-op at Grace Baptist

Church and transferred to PA Cyber School; his flexible schedule as a homeschooler granted him the ability to focus on wrestling. Carr began training at Gracie 717 in Lancaster at the age of 14, and although MMA fighters can’t compete in Pennsylvania until they are at least 18 years of age, he consistently honed his skills at the gym as well as wrestling for Hempfield High School.

Carr soon after expanded his skill set to include jiu-jitsu and kickboxing and began fighting as an amateur once he was able. Over the course of his amateur career, Carr fought six times and only lost once, becoming the No. 1 ranked featherweight fighter in Pennsylvania. He made his professional debut in August and fought again on Nov. 19, winning both matches and maintaining an undefeated pro record.

Carr is contracted with Maverick MMA, a regional promotion circuit based in the Poconos, and his final fight with his current contract is anticipated to be held in March. At the beginning of their professional careers, fighters often work through the ranks of a regional circuit in order to advance to an international circuit like the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Fighters in the amateur circuit are limited by a set of rules dictating which techniques a fighter can use during a round, so Carr is relieved to be competing as a professional and to be able to utilize his entire arsenal. “As a wrestler, some of the rules (in the amateur circuit) inhibited me,” Carr said. “Moving to pro, I can fight with a more well-rounded style and have more weapons to work with.” Carr won both of his professional bouts by finishing his

opponent with a rear naked choke, and he exhibited his own signature finish, the “Strictly Business Choke,” during his most recent fight.

“I enjoy striking, but if I knock someone out, it was by accident before I could submit them with a choke,” said Carr.

Carr hopes to build his cre-

dentials and refine his coaching system; he would like to open his own gym someday. In addition to Gracie 717, Carr trains at other locations in the area and is in no hurry to move out of Lancaster. “I’m open to going out there and making the best of it, no matter what that is,” said Carr.

On Oct. 22, Lancasterbased music group The Jess Zimmerman Band won the Album of the Year award at the eighth annual Josie Music Awards in Nashville. The band’s album “Breathe” garnered the award in the country rock and Southern rock category, and the band itself was also nominated for awards in four other categories: Music Video of the Year, Entertainer of the Year, Fan’s Choice Award and Rock Vocalist of the Year. The Jess Zimmerman Band comprises frontwoman Jess Heitz, guitarist Joe Barszowski, bassist John Knobler and drummer Joe Mattis, and has concerts scheduled for the spring in Holtwood and Millersville.

The awards ceremony was hosted at the Grand Ole Opry, a nationally known American country music venue that has been in operation for almost a century. “I was blown away that we were nominated in five categories,” Heitz said. “To win Album of the Year in such an iconic place was incredible.”

Each year, the Josie Music Awards recognize specifically independent artists, meaning they aren’t signed to a record

label, so they handle things like recording, producing, touring and marketing themselves. Although well-traveled in the Lancaster and greater Pennsylvania country music scene, The Jess Zimmerman Band’s success as an independent group has also taken it across the East Coast, Midwest and South.

“When it comes to ‘Breathe,’ the album itself was a monumental step for us as a band,” Heitz said. “It was also a big step for me emotionally and physically.” The Jess Zimmerman Band independently released “Breathe” in May 2021, following a flurry of recording sessions. The band members stayed in Nashville for five days, during which they recorded and mixed each of the 11 songs on the record. “It was a lot of work from start to finish. Sometimes we would be at the studio from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. working on these songs,” Heitz said. “Breathe” is The Jess Zimmerman Band’s first full-length album.

Heitz grew up on a dairy farm in Ephrata and currently lives in Mount Joy with her husband. Her musical career began at a young age; she would perform at local fairs, talent shows, church services and school events growing up.

“Everyone has a dream when it comes to music, but if I were able to go back and tell my younger self that it would be flourishing, I don’t think she’d believe me,” said Heitz.

The Jess Zimmerman Band has multiple shows in Lancaster approaching after the new year: on Friday, Jan. 13, the group will perform at Phantom Power, 121 W. Frederick St., Millersville; on Friday, Feb. 10, it will take the stage at Mickey’s Black Box, 101 Rock Lititz Blvd., Lititz;

and on Friday, March 24, it will perform at Southern Lancaster County Farmer-Sportsmen’s Association, 573 Hilldale Road, Holtwood. “There’s an amazing music scene in central Pennsylvania, and we hope to connect with people all over, too,” Heitz said. “Our biggest goal is to reach and impact people in whatever way we can. That’s what ‘Breathe’ was for me.”

Students at Dayspring banded together to prepare for the drive by holding class competitions, handing out flyers and contacting churches and businesses in the area to elicit support. Each member of Dayspring’s NHS chapter was assigned a different task, such as writing thank you notes, coordinating where boxes were collected, acquiring enough boxes for the donations and acquiring permissions from school leadership. “It was incredible to see (the students) coordinate all of the little logistical pieces of running a food drive,” Hurley said. When the day of the drive arrived, the Lions Club parked a moving truck across from the school, and students filed out of their classrooms to proudly carry boxes of goods to be delivered to the food bank. Boxes were filled to the brim with nonperishable goods such as canned vegetables, fruits, soup, meats, jars of peanut butter, pasta sauce and boxed cereal.

Next year, the school hopes to organize another drive and

apply what its organizers have learned from operating the event two years in a row.

Although the Lions Club is spearheading the event, Hurley and members of NHS want to connect with more organizations in the area to enlist their help with plan-
