How To Select

THE

RIGHT CARPETING

Although some individuals enjoy the look and feel of hardwood flooring, there are plenty of others who prefer to have soft and luxurious carpeting underfoot. Selecting the right carpeting for a particular room and purpose can be daunting, however, since there are an abundance of available colors and materials. According to the Carpet and Rug Institute, carpeting is an added safety measure that makes play areas safer, potentially lessening the severity of an injury in the event of a fall. This is why carpeting is often preferred in children’s rooms and play areas. There are other advantages to carpeting as well. It can help insulate rooms, both in the summer and winter months. It can also be easier on feet than a hard floor, and few materials absorb sound better than carpet. Choosing the right carpeting for a room comes down to identifying the kind of foot traffic you expect in your home and which carpeting options most suit your needs.

Don’t overlook padding. Padding can make the difference in the way carpeting feels and how long it lasts. The thickest or most expensive padding is not necessarily the best or the best-suited for your home. However, it is wise to pick a pad that matches the type of carpeting you are selecting. You may be able to go with a thinner pad in low-traffic rooms and under dense carpeting like Berber. In high-traffic rooms, choose thicker, more durable padding. Padding prevents carpet backing and fibers from coming apart over a duration of time, so if you are spending a lot on the carpet, it pays to invest in a padding that will hold up well and extend the life of your carpet. Recognize the type of carpeting that best suits your needs. There are many different types of carpeting, though they will not all be the perfect match for your home. For example, plush and Saxony carpets are better in low-traffic areas. These carpets may show footprints, vacuum tracks and dirt. Berber, meanwhile, is more flat and dense, making it highly effective at masking stains and tracks. Textured carpets like frieze are cut from fibers of different heights, so they mask stains and are also softer on the feet than Berbers. An entryway or a den may be better off carpeted in a dense carpeting, while a bedroom may be fine and luxurious with plush carpeting. Carpeting may come in stain-resistant varieties or low-maintenance options. These are generally best in homes with pets and children. However, you may be able to save money by opting out of special treatments to resist stains and simply investing in a steam vacuum instead. Choose color wisely. Choosing a color comes down to preference and how much the room will be used. Although light, neutral colors are often preferred because they work well in just about any room, lighter-colored carpets will show stains much more easily than other carpet colors. Textured, multicolored carpets are preferable to hide stains and can look just as elegant as solid-colored carpeting.

home appeal [4] Early Spring 2014

Much in the way paint colors are chosen, carpeting colors come down to personal Selecting the preference. Drama may right carpeting be created with bold for a particular colors that draw the room and purpose eye down. But for can be daunting those homeowners who want the carpet since there are to fade into the an abundance of background instead available colors of upstaging decor, and materials. neutral colors are better.

CUSTOM LOG HOMES

Hire a good installer. There are many beautiful carpets available, but unless you choose a reliable installer and store, you may end up paying more or receiving subpar service. Poll friends and family members for recommendations that can help you narrow down options. Then, be sure to have any stores you are considering price out materials separate from installation so you can make more accurate price comparisons. Also, you do not necessarily need to use an installer provided by the carpet store. You can shop around to find a separate installer or even do the work yourself. Carpeting can make a fine addition to the interior of your house and make it feel more comfortable and inviting. Remember to take your time when selecting among options, though, as your decision will have long-lasting effects and will influence the atmosphere of your home.

Increase Storage Cozy, quaint homes attract many home buyers and renters. Be it a cottage-style house or a studio apartment, smaller living spaces often involve getting creative with storage. People live in smaller homes for a variety of reasons. Some choose to live in a smaller home so they can be right in the thick of things in a city or urban center. Others scale back on living space in an effort to save money. But storage space in small quarters is often at a premium, and thinking creatively is a necessity to keep the home tidy and items out of view. Rainy or chilly days are the perfect times to tackle indoor organization projects. When the outdoors is not beckoning, you can devote all of your attention to addressing storage issues in your home. To begin, take inventory of what you have, going through your possessions and determining what can stay and what can go. Part with anything you have not used in quite some time. The next step is to sort items and get organized. Then you can find a place for everything. For example, if you have a dozen bath towels but only one sauce pot, you will need to find more room for linens than kitchen cookware. You may need to borrow space from one area of the home to give to another area. The following are some additional tips to increase space in an otherwise cramped home: Add shelves. Increase cabinet and closet space by adding shelves into them. This may double or even triple the amount of usable space, especially if you customize the shelving to fit storage containers. You can then use the individual containers to store everything from shoes to craft items. Opt for dual-purpose furniture. Benches with lids that lift up and sofas that convert into guest beds are just a few of the many ways you can keep a small home neat and increase storage space. An ottoman is a great place to store extra blankets and linens, while a trunk or crate with a sturdy top can be used in lieu of a traditional coffee table to keep books or board games. Think vertically. When floor space is at a premium, you may need to look up for storage. Frequently used pots and pans can be hung from a decorative rack in your kitchen. Use magnets on jars to store a spice rack on the wall near the stove. Racks above cabinets or on doors can be used to store everything from shoes to jewelry and toiletries. A series of shelves can be installed next to a washing machine to keep laundry supplies organized. Shelving in children’s rooms can store lesserused toys or collectibles away from the floor. Empty walls are valuable real estate in a small home, and tall bookshelves can house a number of different items. Take advantage of oddly shaped crevices. If you have space under a staircase or a spot by a dormer or in an attic eave, use the space to store items. You may need to get creative, such as adding a door and small

closet into the staircase, but such spaces make practical storage areas and add character to a home. Use see-through storage containers. Many people find that plastic storage bins are neater and more stackable than boxes. See-through bins enable you to quickly find items so that you are not searching around the house for lost belongings and creating a bigger mess along the way. Clear storage containers work in the refrigerator, too. You can more easily spot leftovers, and uniform stacking containers free up more room for bulkier items. Make use of space beneath your bed. There likely is ample room to store more things than just dust bunnies beneath your bed. A bed frame with built-in drawers is the perfect place to keep bed linens and out-of-season clothes. Beds can even be raised on blocks to create more space underneath for storing rolling plastic containers or seldom-used suitcases. Opt for an armoire. Armoires are not exclusive to bedrooms. Armoires can be used in dining spaces or in dens to store items out of sight. An armoire can also be used for electronics when retrofitted with a hole for any plugs. Consider placing a television inside or adding a pull-out shelf as a laptop desk. They also make convenient places to store any excess office items, as the doors can be closed to maintain a tidier overall environment. Improve storage in the bathroom. Try to choose a vanity that has under-the-sink storage so you will have a place to store toiletries. Home improvement centers sell cabinets and étagères that can be placed above the toilet tank as a storage space for additional bathroom items. In the shower, hang a second tensionloaded shower curtain rod on the inside of the shower enclosure to be used to hold bags of kids’ bath toys and other bath items, keeping them easily accessible and off the ledges of the tub. When you think creatively, you can maximize storage space in homes of all sizes.

Restoring Your P

After A Long W

One of the best things about the dawn of spring and the return of warmer weather is the chance to get out of the house and get some fresh air. For homeowners, this is also the perfect opportunity to assess any damage the previous months did to yards and to develop a plan to restore properties. Don’t jump the gun. The first warm day might seem like a great time to get out in the yard and get your hands dirty, but it is best to wait until the grass has completely dried out before getting to work. Raking on wet grass increases the

risk of tearing out patches, which can cause bald spots and the growth of weeds. In addition, stepping on the grass while the ground is still wet can compact the soil, which can slow drainage and block the lawn’s roots from breathing. Patience should prevail with regard to mowing the lawn as well. A lawn’s roots will not start to grow until the average everyday temperature routinely reaches 40˚ F, so mowing too early is both unnecessary and potentially harmful to the lawn. When the temperatures regularly reach 50˚ F, then homeowners will likely start to see their lawns growing. Remove debris that is piled up. Debris has a tendency to infest a yard over the course of the winter months. Fallen branches, stones and even trash can accumulate in a yard, putting those who spend time in the yard at risk of injury once the warm weather returns. For instance, bits of twigs and pebbles that are blown across the yard during a windy winter can become embedded in the yard, making the yard less of a haven and more of a hazard. Once the grass is dry enough to walk on, walk around the property and remove any debris that has piled up.

Mowing the lawn too early in the spring is both unnecessary and potentially harmful to the lawn.

“We Provide Prompt Service”

Employ a pre-emergent weed killer. Homeowners who routinely spend their summers agonizing over weeds should consider applying a pre-emergent weed killer around the beginning of spring. It is important to do so around the end of March or early April, when the weeds have not yet had a chance to grow. When applying, follow the dosage instructions provided by the product’s manufacturer. Such instructions often recommend a second application right before summer begins. Remove thatch. Once the grass has dried, you can begin to remove thatch that has built up over the winter. Thatch is potentially very harmful to soil, blocking sunlight, air and moisture the soil needs to ensure a lawn looks lush and healthy. Thatch removal does not necessarily need to be an annual task. If thatch buildup is insignificant, then it can be done every other year. Be sure to use a dethatching rake to make the job easier. Aerate, particularly if the yard is a heavy traffic area. If your yard transforms into a child’s wonderland upon the arrival of spring and summer, you might want to revive the soil by aerating. When the yard gets heavy usage, it is easy for soil to become compacted, which makes it hard for air and water to reach the roots. That can eventually make for a less-than-appealing lawn. So, if your yard is the place to be come the warmer months, aerate in the spring to loosen the soil and make it easier for the lawn to thrive in the months ahead.

HARDWOOD FLOORS:

it’s all about

TEXTURE

Experts in the hardwood flooring industry are seeing a major shift in the way consumers are now choosing their floors, as color is no longer king. Texture has emerged as the new “color” when it comes to the driving force behind wood flooring selections. The latest handscraped and distressed hardwood floors are good examples of how popular textures have become with discerning wood flooring consumers. Adding both tactile and visual elements, texture stimulates more of the senses. Many homeowners are now looking to feature the distressed look of barn wood, prominent knots, or the natural sculptural and undulating lines of boards planed the old-fashioned way. To keep up with the demand for this growing texture trend in hardwood floors, manufacturers have developed new hardwood series featuring sought-after elements. Some collections feature hardwood floors that capture the essence of a well-worn floor. The flooring comes in a variety

of shades and replicates the unique charm of wood that has seen it all and lived to tell the tale. Flooring that is handscraped is finished with a handsanded feel. This can give a floor a different texture or a more traditional appearance where eye-catching knots add character. A rustic scrape will result in a more “distressed” look and is an ideal choice for an active family. A more sculpted floor with minor surface interruption is considered “classic” and fits perfectly in a contemporary decor. Homeowners installing new flooring or updating the look of a room now have a variety of different hardwood offerings to choose from. Before starting a project, individuals should take the time to research options and consider selecting a floor that complements the appearance and decorative aspects of their home.
