Storage space is often a coveted commodity. Apartment dwellers seek out more closet space, homeowners may desire more acreage, and even children may want more space for their toys and belongings. The purchase of a storage shed could alleviate some clutter issues and move items outdoors -- creating more space where it is needed. Household garages are no longer as popular for storing vehicles. Instead, garages are used to store the extra items that do not fit inside the home. Many people even turn to self-storage units for extra storage space. According to the Self Storage Association, it has been the fastest-growing segment of the commercial real estate industry for the last 30 years and is considered to be recession-proof. Garden storage sheds present another place where individuals can keep items out of sight but easily accessible. Many homeowners think about a shed purchase to keep outdoor lawn and garden essentials in their own

place. A locked garden shed can be a safe place in which to store sharp tools, fuel and some chemical products. The process of purchasing a shed is not as simple as finding the least or most expensive type on the market. There are other factors that come into play when selecting a shed.

When choosing a pool, several decisions present themselves, including whether to purchase an above-ground pool or an in-ground one. Choosing between an above-ground pool or an in-ground one requires forethought. There are a number of factors that set these pool styles apart, and homeowners should carefully weigh the options before breaking ground.

Expense

Cost is a major factor when undergoing a home renovation, including adding a swimming pool. Because of the work involved for excavation and essentially building the pool from below the ground and up, in-ground pools will generally be more expensive than above-ground ones. Homeowners can expect to pay between $10,000 to $25,000 for an in-ground pool, depending on the pool’s size and features. On the other hand, above-ground pools may

range from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand. There are also above-ground pool kits that install relatively quickly, or there may be inflatable options.

Ease of Installation

For some, above-ground pools can be a do-it-yourself project. With the help of a few friends, it is possible to set up a pool in a weekend. In-ground pools, however, are a professional undertaking. The labor involved is often what makes this type of pool more expensive. Homeowners who want a quick set-up may prefer an above-ground model.

Depth and Size

Individuals looking for an Olympic-size swimming pool at a depth of 8 feet or more will have to choose an in-ground pool. These pools can be customized into different sizes and shapes and greater depths. On the other hand, aboveground pools are usually manufactured according to set size and depth limits. They are also generally round or oval and cannot be custom shapes. A person may be able to get a pool up to 5 feet deep, and that is the limit.

It is easier for children to wander into a pool that is at ground-level, which could give above-ground pools a slight safety advantage. But above-ground pools that are built with a deck surrounding them are not necessarily safer. No one should be allowed to play around the pool or swim unattended. Keeping careful watch can prevent injuries or death.

Property Taxes

In some areas of the country, the installation of an in-ground pool is considered a permanent modification and can

increase property taxes. An above-ground pool can be removed, and is therefore not a permanent change. Property taxes may remain unaffected. Before installing a pool, homeowners should check with the municipal office to see if permits are needed and what the regulations regarding pools may be. Electrical wiring, pool placement and water fill-up may have to be worked on to avoid fines. A pool can be a welcome addition to the yard. Depending on price range and amenities desired, the choice will have to be made between above-ground and in-ground styles.

Many question if chlorinated pool water poses any ill effects on the grass in the backyard. In addition to splash-out of water during fun times in the pool, water will also be tracked across the lawn from children and adults exiting the pool or will flood the grass when it is necessary to clean and "backwash" the filter. Will you be left with a dried-out patch of chlorine-burnt lawn? Probably not. Healthy chlorine levels in a pool are kept so that the pool water is generally on par with the chlorine levels contained in regular tap water. You would not hesitate to turn on the hose to water your lawn, so you should not be overly concerned about pool water, particularly if you are stringent about maintaining the proper pH levels and chlorine levels. Also, soil can withstand chlorine at high acid levels and is pretty resilient about self-correcting. Furthermore, grass blades are selective about which nutrients they absorb, so excess chlorine likely will not penetrate them. Chlorine also dissipates in the sun. Therefore, while the levels may be elevated upon just hitting the grass, over a short while the chlorine will essentially be used up and pose no additional threat. Some people have actually said that watering your lawn with pool water can be an eco-friendly way of curbing water usage. Therefore, it may be safely used on lawns and most flowering plants. It is unadvisable to water vegetable gardens with pool water because of any trace levels of other chemicals that may be found in the pool water. Homeowners who are still concerned about exposing their lawns to pool water can create a buffer zone around the pool. In-ground pools are traditionally bordered by concrete or patio blocks. Place stone or mulch around the perimeter of an above-ground pool to catch any splashes and to create a barrier between the pool and the lawn. Also, direct backwashed water through a long tube and have it flow to an area away from the lawn.

Shopping For A Grill To Match Your Barbecue Needs

Before you venture to your local grill store in search of a new barbecue, here are a few things to consider.

What is your favorite grilled food?

If hamburgers, hot dogs and the occasional steak are as far as you get, there is a wide range of basic gas and charcoal grills to choose from. If, however, you are cooking a variety of meals and you do not want to be running in and out of the kitchen, a more elaborate setup might be better suited. A number of burners will give you more precise heat control, while side burners and rotisserie capability make it easy to impress your guests.

How many people are you grilling for?

The cooking surface on grills can range from 250- to 1,000-square-inches. Small, space-conscious grills designed for condo living and empty nesters make preparing a meal for four to six people easy enough, but for more than that you will have to get creative. Grilling for between four and eight people and occasional crowds of 12, you should have 500 square inches or more. If you are preparing a feast on a regular basis, look for a grill that is equipped with two separate cooking surfaces (typically a larger cookbox at 725 square inches and smaller at 275 square inches). In addition to the cooking surface, look for the depth of the cookbox, allowing you to put a turkey or large roast on the grill.

What are the burners like?

Check out the burners and understand what they are made of and how they are shaped. Dual Tube-style burners, and 'H'- or '8'-shaped burners, offer the most even heat distribution. Is there something covering the burners to protect them and to dissipate the heat? (This is typically called the heat medium.) Briquettes and lava rock are

antiquated heat media; most new grills have stainless or porcelain-coated steel vaporizers. They are reliable, durable, and easy to look after. It is important that they protect the burner from food residue, promote even heating, and do not have flat spots for grease to pool and flare up. A welldesigned grill will have a stainless or porcelain-coated steel "wave-shaped" vaporizer completely covering the burners. The vaporization of food drippings creates that authentic barbecue flavor most people covet, so this is an important feature.

What are the cooking grids made of?

You will need: a sturdy bristle brush, grill cleaner, toothpicks, soap and water, and a venturi brush.

Step 1

Remove all the cooking grids, grates and burners and use a sturdy bristle brush to remove the buildup of grease on the inside of the oven. Using a grill cleaner, scrub the inside and outside of the oven and then rinse with water. Never use oven cleaner on your grill. It is corrosive and can damage the other components.

Step 2

Inspect the burners, making sure there are no holes rusted through any of the components. If there are, it is time for a replacement. Clean out any clogged burner ports using a toothpick, being careful not to damage the ports. Check all igniter contacts to ensure they are not corroded or loose, and remove any debris from the electrode. Next, clean out the burner venturi tubes using a venturi brush. It is very important to keep these tubes clean. Spiders love to make nests in these tubes, creating blockages that can cause serious damage.

Step 3

Examine the heat medium. If you have a heat plate, remove any grease buildup and make sure there are no holes rusted through. If you have briquettes, make sure they are not crumbling and the pores are not clogged with grease.

Step 4

Check the cooking grids and make sure no welds are broken, and brush off any stuck-on residue. If you have cast iron cooking grids, season them with oil to help keep food from sticking and help prevent rust.

How to maintain fresh-cut flowers Fresh flowers serve many purposes. A bouquet of flowers can be a gift on a special holiday or birthday. Some people apologize with flowers, while others use flowers to convey feelings of love or appreciation. Many people like to display fresh-cut flowers in their homes because their beauty can brighten the mood indoors. Others plant rows and rows of flowers in a garden with the express purpose of cutting them and bringing them into the home. While outdoor flowers can remain beautiful and bountiful outside, once they are cut, there is a limited amount of time before they begin to wilt and wither. But there are ways to prolong the life of cut flowers to enjoy their beauty as long as possible. r Cut correctly. Creating a large enough surface area on the stem for the uptake of water is essential. That is why florists recommend cutting the stem on a slant to expose more area to the water. r Place flowers in water immediately. Some people advocate cutting the stems while they are actually submerged in water. However, you will probably be fine if you simply re-cut the stems on flowers you brought inside and immediately put them in a vase of water. The key is not to let the tip of the stem dry out or close up with an air bubble, sap or other substances, preventing the uptake of water. Be sure to use lukewarm water so as not to shock the blooms. r Remove leaves. Take off the leaves of the plant that would end up underwater in the vase. Exposure to the water could cause the leaves to rot and fall off, creating algae or sludge in the vase water. It also may breed extra bacteria or attract small insects to the water. However, do not to remove the thorns from roses, as this tends to shorten their shelf life. r Choose young flowers. Mature flowers may have peaked and begun to make room for a new round of blooms, so try to choose young buds or blooms that just opened so that you will have an opportunity to enjoy them longer. r Create a viable water atmosphere. Once a fresh flower is cut and a stem is placed in water, bacteria and fungi can start to grow almost immediately. These microscopic organisms can clog the small tubes inside the stem that suck up water for nourishment. Many florists send home a packet of water additive to alleviate some problems in the indoor environment. The packet will contain a biocide that kills bacteria and fungi. There will be an acidifier as well as sugar. The acidifier makes the water more acidic to allow better absorption of water up the stem. The sugar is a food source for the flowers. Homeowners who cut flowers from their gardens can purchase these additives or create their own variations from items around the house. It has been said that adding a penny to the water will kill the microorganisms because copper is a fungicide. An aspirin can make the water more acidic. You can also try small amounts of bleach, lemon-lime soda or even antiseptic mouthwash. r Keep flowers away from ... Do not place cut flowers next to fruit, which gives off gases as it ripens, causing flowers to age faster. Also, keep the flowers away from direct sunlight and try to keep them in a cool place. r Change the water. Keep on top of water maintenance by changing it at least every 2 to 3 days to maintain good water health. Be sure to replace the additives each time you change the water.
