BRICKERVILLE HOUSE History The Brickerville House is on the list of Historic Buildings in Lancaster. Built by John and Barbara Bricker in 1753, it was located on the main road from Philadelphia to Harrisburg. The original portion of this house served as a stagecoach stop and tavern over the years. We’re not sure if George Washington ever ate, drank or slept here but it’s a sure bet that Peter Grubb, Baron Von Stiegel and other early American Patriots did! Other points of local history: • Two miles west on Rt. 322 is the Hopewell Forge Mansion built by Peter Grubb, the original ironmaster of the colonies. • Several more miles west on Rt. 322 is Cornwall Furnace where the same Peter Grubb established the original ore mines in the states. • Seven miles East on Rt. 322 is the Ephrata Cloister. Many a wounded soldier from the

Continental Army was nursed back to health here after the Battle of Brandywine. • One mile North on Rt. 501 is Elizabeth Furnace where Baron Von Stiegel was ironmaster until he decided to venture into glass making. He then moved his operations a few miles West to Manheim. • Five miles South on Rt. 501 is the quaint and beautiful Historic Town of Lititz, founded by the Moravian religious community in 1756. HOME SWEET HOME AWAY FROM HOME Lancaster County's Walnut Lawn Bed & Breakfast Offers Comfortable Accomodations & Tasty Treats To Visitors

Nestled in the heart of Lancaster County, Walnut Lawn Bed & Breakfast offers visitors simplistic charm and peaceful scenery that allow guests to feel as if they are coming home. Owner Beth Holloway noted that the home was built in 1909 by a Mennonite family, so it features beautiful original chestnut woodwork and grand pocket doors, as well as an expansive wrap-around porch. “(The house) is not fancy or overly ornate, but it brings you back to an era when homes were built to stand the tests of time,” Holloway comments. Additional features include an original barn and carriage house complete with rippled-glass windows, hay loft doors, and weather vanes. Guests will notice a focus on the two most important features of a bed-and-breakfast establishment: the bed and the breakfast. Walnut Lawn offers four rooms, each appointed with luxury linens and comfortable beds. After a peaceful night’s rest, guests are greeted in the morning by

a three-course family-style country breakfast. “Breakfast is different each day, but it always ends with a sweet dessert,” Holloway shares, adding that her special cake version of shoefly pie, the gooey, molasses-laden Pennsylvania Dutch treat, is a favorite of many guests. (Check out the recipe on page 38.) After the hearty breakfast, guests will be ready to start a day full of Lancaster County adventures. “There is so much to do in Lancaster County all year long,” Holloway says. Amish farms come to life with activity in the spring, as fields are being planted, and the summer offers an abundance of fresh produce, culminating with the apple and pumpkin harvest in the autumn. Lancaster is a popular destination during the holiday season, as well, thanks to many outlet shopping venues. Special attractions of note for Walnut Lawn guests are the Strasburg Rail Road and the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum, which are located just 4 miles from the

bed-and-breakfast. Visitors may ride the historic Strasburg Rail Road through the countryside and stop at the local station where President Abraham Lincoln stopped and gave a short speech in 1861. The museum houses an impressive collection of locomotives and train cars dating back to the beginning of rail travel in the U.S. “Both sites are wonderful stops (for guests), whether train enthusiasts or not,” Holloway notes. Lancaster County also offers a rich diversity of dining options, from famous smorgasbords and family restaurants to innovative fine dining choices in the downtown area in Lancaster city. Visitors can also take in a show at one of Lancaster’s premier entertainment venues, such as the historic Fulton Theatre or Sight & Sound Theatres, where larger-than-life Bible stories take the stage. After an exciting day in Lancaster County, Walnut Lawn guests will feel pampered by the bed-and-breakfast’s generous accommodations, including a queen or king bed, modern private bathrooms, flat-screen televisions with more than 60 cable stations, comfortable sitting areas, signature robes, plush towels, and seasonal personal air conditioners. The Demuth Museum. Born in Lancaster at the end of the 19th century, Charles Demuth studied and painted in Philadelphia, New York, Provincetown, Paris, and Bermuda. He was part of the avant garde scene while studying in Paris; however, most of his work was accomplished in his King Street, Lancaster County, home. His wellknown work “My Egypt (1927)” was inspired by grain elevators that dotted the burgeoning industrial landscape in Lancaster. Though plagued by illness his entire life, Demuth managed to produce more than 1,000 works of art. An impressive sample is available to view at The Demuth Museum, located in what was once the artist’s home and studio. 120 E. King St., Lancaster 717-299-9940, information@demuth.org www.demuth.org

My Favorite Room… Dallas and Pam Fritz have owned B.F. Hiestand House Bed & Breakfast in Marietta for 17 years. Pam’s favorite spot in the house is the Susquehanna Room, a guest room on the second floor that was named for the nearby Susquehanna River. “There is a queen Shaker-style cherry four-poster bed, and the room faces the Susquehanna River,” notes Pam. “We also have some Civil War memorabilia in this guest room.” The room’s private bathroom is also special. “The private bathroom for the Susquehanna Room was the original bathroom in our home,” Pam explains. “There is a beautiful stained glass window and hand-painted French tile from the early 1900s in the bathroom.” Preserving the charm and history of the room was important to the Fritzes. “It had a claw foot, side-fill tub with hand-held shower, but the plumber was having a hard time finding parts when we needed to repair it,” Pam relates. “We replaced it with a steam/rain forest spa shower that was able to sit right on top of the antique tile, and none of the historic tile was disturbed.” B.F. Hiestand House Bed & Breakfast 722 E. Market St., Marietta 717-426-8415 innkeeper@bfhiestandhouse.com www.bfhiestandhouse.com “George Washington slept here. Well, maybe not … but I did, as did many of my ancestors,” says Audrey St. Clair, owner/operator of The Cooper’s Inn in Lititz. Audrey and Dane St. Clair have owned the inn for 11 years, but Audrey’s ties to the property run much deeper than that. “I am the sixth generation to live on this land and the fourth generation to inhabit this house,” she explains. Audrey’s favorite spot in the house is The Morris Room, which is named after her grandfather, Morris Irvin. The room features exposed beams in the ceiling, and the floors are the original, random-width wood planks. Like the rest of the bed-and-breakfast, the room reflects 1800s Pennsylvania German décor. “I’m especially fond of this bedroom as it was mine when I was growing up,” Audrey says. Audrey isn’t the only member of her family with a special connection to the room. “My grandparents modestly raised 10 children here on the farm. At a recent Irvin family reunion my husband and I hosted, we opened the doors to all my relatives,” Audrey recalls. “My one elderly cousin toured the house. He shared many childhood memories as he entered each room, but his face lit up as we entered The Morris Room. ‘This,’ he said, ‘is the room I was born in.’” The Cooper’s Inn 537 Hackman Road, Lititz 717-490-4860 thecoopersinn@aol.com www.thecoopersinnbb.com

We asked several area innkeepers to highlight one special space in their inn or bed-and-breakfast. Here’s what they told us about their favorite room: Brandy and Theodore, innkeepers at Lancaster’s The Hollinger House Bed & Breakfast, which has been owned by Guy Martin for three years, point to the library as their favorite space in the house. “Our friend Linda, who made The Hollinger House what it is today, was a woman with amazing vision. When she first walked into this empty room, she knew it was supposed to be a library,” the innkeepers explain, noting that Linda had a direct influence on every part of the design of the room – from helping to design the custom, built-in bookshelves to commissioning the ceiling mural painted by her friend Freiman Stoltzfus, a local artist. The library’s shelves are stocked with a variety of books, including classics, modern favorites, photography collections, and cookbooks. Also adorning the shelves are unique items including tea sets and a collection of handpainted Christmas ornaments from the artist who created the room’s mural. The innkeepers note, “Sitting down with a cup of coffee and a great book, looking up at the ceiling – it is such a peaceful, relaxing experience.” The attached powder room features an antique pocket door. “Linda filled the shelves with books and trinkets from her own collection and those of her friends,” note Brandy and Theodore. “The collaboration between Linda, her incredible vision, and the love and help of her friends lies at the heart of everything The Hollinger House stands for. That’s what makes this room so special to us.” The Hollinger House Bed & Breakfast 2336 Hollinger Road, Lancaster 717-490-6902 thehollingerhouse@gmail.com www.thehollingerhouse.com

Beth Holloway, who has owned Walnut Lawn Bed & Breakfast in Lampeter for two and a half years, singles out The Four Seasons guest room as her favorite space in the bed-and-breakfast. The room’s name was inspired by the paintings displayed on its walls, which are by local artists and depict Amish and Mennonite life in Lancaster throughout the four seasons. The room features a queen-size canopy bed covered by a handmade Amish quilt with red and white tones. “The pale blue walls add an Americana feel to the room,” explains Beth. “While it is a small room, the charm is abundant.” Beth notes that The Four Seasons room is the most popular guest room in the house due to its en suite bathroom. “Guests open the grand, expansive chestnut doors and go up the two stairs to step into the bathroom,” Beth says, noting that the room previously served a different purpose. “The bathroom was originally a utility room that held the giant cistern tanks that collected the rain water from the roof,” she explains. “The tanks are gone, but the history behind the doors still exists.” Walnut Lawn Bed & Breakfast 1027 Village Road, Lancaster 717-464-1382 URWelcome@WalnutLawn.com www.walnutlawn.com
