Fundraiser will benefit local park, fire company
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDThe Strasburg Community Parks Foundation has partnered with the Strasburg Fire Company to organize the first Bingo, Baskets & Beef BBQ fundraiser on Saturday, March 9, at the fire hall, located at 203 W. Franklin St., Strasburg. Tickets will be available to purchase when doors open at 4:30 p.m., and the first game of bingo will begin at 6 p.m.
The fundraiser will include 10 standard rounds of bingo with cash prizes and three games with special prizes. Volunteers from the Strasburg Community Parks Foundation will coordinate bingo matches and sell tickets for a prize drawing for a gift basket throughout the evening. Members of the Strasburg Fire Company will sell beef barbecue sandwiches, hot dogs, beverages and desserts.
The proceeds from ticket sales will support the Strasburg Community Parks Foundation, and funds raised by food sales will benefit the Strasburg Fire Company. In the past, the two organizations have worked together to offer an annual car show in July. Last year, the date of the car show was moved to October to avoid the hot weather, but the event was compromised by heavy rain.
Since the car show served as one of the largest fundraisers for both the Strasburg Community Parks Foundation and the Strasburg Fire Company, the two groups decided to replace it with a new community event. “We hope that this event will raise muchneeded funds for the park. We were very disappointed when our car show this past October was literally a washout,” said Barbara Rathbone-Frank, a board member of the Strasburg Community
Parks Foundation.
The Strasburg Community Parks Foundation will use the proceeds from the bingo event to maintain Strasburg Community Park on Precision Avenue. Although other local parks contain recreational features such as baseball fields and playgrounds, Strasburg Community Park primarily contains quiet walking trails and designated areas for native plants and wildlife. “Our concept for the park was to have plants that grew all over Pennsylvania many years ago, before agriculture changed the landscape,”
said Rathbone-Frank. “We want people to see what the region is supposed to look like. The park is a haven for small mammals and birds.” Every summer, the foundation offers free community concerts at the park.
The Strasburg Community Parks Foundation relies on donations from the community to cover the maintenance costs for the park, as it does not receive funding from any municipality or local government.

The play is set in a mythical world that is an amalgamation of multiple fairy tales, featuring familiar characters such as Cinderella, the Three Pigs and Pinocchio. The story’s protagonist, a misanthropic ogre named Shrek, dwells in a peaceful sanctuary deep in the swamp.
Shrek’s solitude is interrupted by a group of fantastical characters who have been displaced from their homes by the cruel Lord Farquaad. The unsociable ogre reluctantly agrees to face Lord Farquaad and reclaim their homes in a quest that takes him to faraway lands, where he encounters an unusual cast of magical creatures

and a mysterious princess named Fiona.
“Much like the film, ‘Shrek the Musical’ is a hysterical comedy with great music. People are going to want the soundtrack after seeing the show,” said Kevin Ditzler, the play’s director. “But it also has a bit of heart to it in the way it has you look at others who you feel are different.”
Cast members are working hard to prepare for opening night during rehearsals. LSHS senior Talia Hall and many other students have embraced their roles by studying the characters they will bring to life on stage. “Fiona has a proper princess side, but she’s also quirky, and she has her own spunk,” Hall said of her character. “This is my first lead role, and it’s been great stepping into the part.”
Freshman Trenton Brenaman and senior Kole Lawrence, who will play Donkey and Lord Farquaad, respectively, have had to overcome a few key challenges while rehearsing. “This role really pushes me out of my comfort zone a bit,” Brenaman said. “I’m learning how Donkey cracks jokes and getting the comedic timing right.”
“Lord Farquaad is typically played on his knees, which has been fun but also a big challenge,” Lawrence said. “I had to get very durable knee pads.”
Senior Aiden Flory, who will play the lead role of Shrek, said cast members have enjoyed making the familiar fairy tale their own. “I think the audience will enjoy seeing Shrek in a different light,” Flory added. “It’s very close to the movie, but many people will be experiencing the story off of the movie screen for the first time.”

Pujol has about 100 students, who perform community shows at libraries, schools, retirement communities and more throughout the year.
“We decided to do something above and beyond that,” she said of the impetus to start the performance troupe, which she describes as “mini Riverdance.”
At the Elizabethtown performance, dancers from the Baltimore branch of Doherty Petri will join Lancaster students on stage, and Pujol said the show will feature some impressive talent.

Pujol grew up in a family of Irish dancers. Her grandmother was a champion Irish dancer from Ireland. “I have always loved Irish dance,” she said. “It’s
exciting to see how much interest in it has grown.”
She emphasized that audiences are in for an entertaining show that may offer a peek at what’s to come for some of the performers.

Friends to display artwork at Ware Center
In honor of Women’s History Month, the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, will host an exhibit of artworks by Millersville University (MU) alumnae Kerry Sacco and Ann Thomas in the Regitz Gallery. The exhibit, “Connections and Pathways,” will open with a reception on Frist Friday, March 1, from 6 to 8 p.m., during which visitors may meet the artists and view the collection.
In this exhibition, Sacco and Thomas interpret the complexity of nature and celebrate 40 years of friendship through connections and pathways to the landscape of their worlds.
Both artists graduated with art degrees from MU, but their initial path did not follow the painting route. Sacco pursued graduate studies in lithography at MU and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
During that time, she began to appreciate works by the Pennsylvania Impressionists, which led to further studies of oil painting. Her landscapes in the upcoming exhibition focus on wellknown local subjects, and the artworks are notable for their composition, color, and brushwork.
Upon graduating from MU, Thomas focused on architecture, interior design, and other entrepreneurial pursuits. A decade ago, after raising two daughters, she embraced the one medium that had eluded her: oil painting. Primarily self-taught, she creates landscapes that explore the beauty that surrounds her home in Hunterdon County, N.J., and in Bucks County.
The exhibition will be on view through Friday, March 29. The gallery is open daily. For more information, call 717-871-7814.
“Anastasia” from pg 2
the Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, with a dinner theater at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 1. The show will also be performed at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 8; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, March 2 and 9; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, March 3 and 10.
The show is based on the animated film released in 1997. It is a musical version of the legend of the Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia, played by Amanda Lewis as an adult and Violet Bartlett as a child. According to the story, Anastasia may have escaped and survived when her family was executed by revolutionaries in 1918. When young woman named Anya (Lewis) with amnesia seeks to discover her past, she is persuaded by two con artists - Dmitry, played by Ric Weaver, and Vlad Popov, played by Josh Glacken, who hope to benefit from Anya’s resemblance to Anastasia by passing her off as the Grand Duchess to her paternal grandmother, Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna, played by Joy Schaeffer.
“Anastasia” will include a segment of “Swan Lake” with dancers from Citylight Dance Theatre on pointe
and Anna Riley dancing the part of Odette.
DePaul referred to the story as historical fiction. “It has been proven Anastasia did not survive,” she noted, adding that she was intrigued by the show’s connection to history. “We tend to enjoy doing shows that are rooted in literature and history (because) the stories are so human and deep,” DePaul explained, adding that the message of hope in the show was also appealing. “(Audience members) find themselves on a journey and process and who she comes to be on the other side is inspiring,” she said. “I hope (attendees) leave with a sense of
Foundation announces planned leadership transition
United Disabilities Services (UDS) Foundation has announced a planned leadership transition effective Jan. 1. The transition is part of a strategic move to ensure the continued success and sustainability of the organization.
After 14 years of service, Judy Naylor has assumed the role of president.
In this capacity, Naylor will oversee key business objectives aligned with the UDS Foundation’s strategic program operational success. Her leadership has been instrumental in steering the company through change, growth, and innovation.
Naylor has contributed to the strategic planning and succession planning processes, playing a crucial role in developing strategic deployment practices across the organization. Her efforts have focused on maintaining key metrics for successful business
operations and driving results-oriented actions intended to position UDS Foundation as a state and field leader.
The current CEO, William Kepner, will continue to lead the organization, with a heightened focus on nonprofit management solutions (NPMS), development, advocacy, strategic partnerships, potential acquisitions, and relationship building with key government officials and stakeholders.
This strategic transition aims to secure the organization’s future by ensuring a seamless change in leadership and maintaining the continuity of strong leadership for the UDS Foundation. It allows Naylor to integrate the organization into the next phase of Community HealthChoices (CHC) in January 2025.

hope,” she said. “We need hope and magic.”
The more than 25 musical numbers in “Anastasia” include solos and showstoppers that put the entire cast of 30 on stage. DePaul said that standout songs include “In My Dreams,” “Learn to Do It,” and “Once Upon a December,” with the final song being among the most catchy.
DePaul said she has been challenged by the best ways to utilize all the cast members using only the Cavod stage. Set designers Shana Baloche and Dom Deriso have come to the rescue by designing and building
platforms to accommodate the cast. “They have come up with this really cool idea of building arches we can go in and out of and use to create different places and time,” said DePaul, who added that the lead character will delve into her childhood memories as part of the plotline. DePaul praised members of the cast and crew, saying, “They are so creative and collaborative, and they are excited to do a show that is so newly available.”

Preschool opens registration
Sacred Heart Preschool, 235 Nevin St., Lancaster, is accepting registrations for the 2024-25 school year.
The school offers Tuesday and Thursday classes for 3-year-olds and a variety of class scheduling options for 4-year-olds.
Lessons are geared to children’s natural curiosity and sense of wonder, and offer opportunities for them to gather information through all of their senses.
The students paint on the ceiling like Michelangelo, form clay pinch pots like the Native Americans, and create stained “glass” art like Louis Tiffany. They
also experiment with finger paints, modeling compound, and glue. Mad Lab days are filled with science experiments that fizz, pop, erupt, and change color. Through a variety of dramatic play opportunities, the students practice social interactions and the conversations of being kind, compassionate friends. They are taught that a values-based community that consistently treats both adults and children with respect is integral to the definition of school.
The curriculum at Sacred Heart Preschool strives not
only to prepare students for the specific academic skills of kindergarten, but also to prepare their minds and hearts to embrace curiosity and to love learning. Children play with letters and sounds, as surprise visitors from Alphabetland lead surprise excursions, and along the way, the students learn to sound out words. Movement is a planned element of learning. For example, to build a phonics understanding of the letter R, children make their bodies into the shape of an R, draw an R in the sand, and make a “rrr” sound like revving the engine of
a racecar while they run around the gym. As part of playing with toys, the students count the toys, sort them, compare quantities and make graphs. Songs are used to help children remember lessons.
Sacred Heart Preschool’s philosophy of education is to embrace the essence of little children - their inquisitiveness, their wiggles, their messes, their noise, and their wonder.
For more information, visit www.sacredheart schlanc.org/preschool or contact Sheryl Krahulik at skrahulik@sacred heartsch.org.
Students invited to enter art contest
The Shapiro Administration invites all firstthrough sixth-grade students in Pennsylvania to enter the 2024 Lyme Art Contest by creating a short video or poster focusing on the theme “Protect. Check. Remove.” The annual contest aims to help students, Scout troops, and community youth programs learn how to prevent Lyme disease by educating them about ticks, including where these creatures live, how to prevent bites, and how to remove ticks that do bite.
Officials from the
Departments of Health (DOH), Education (PDE), Environmental Protection (DEP), and Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) encourage young students to participate in the contest and help raise awareness of Lyme disease.
The deadline for entries is 5 p.m. on Friday, March 15. Contest information can be found at http:// tinyurl.com/Tickborne DiseaseArtContest24.
Finalists will be notified by mail and will be invited to an award ceremony at the state Capitol in May.
In 2023, nine winners were recognized at a ceremony with representatives from DOH, PDE, and DCNR.
Pennsylvania has one of the highest annual counts of Lyme disease cases in the nation. Ticks are usually found in shrubs, weeds, leaf litter, and tall grasses, but can be found anywhere there is grass. When exploring outside, it is important to take the proper steps to lower one’s risk of getting bitten; these steps include covering exposed skin, wearing light colors
to help detect ticks, and using an EPA-approved insect repellent. Use permethrin spray on shoes, clothes, and gear as an added protection before spending time outdoors.
After being outside, people should check themselves and their children and pets thoroughly for ticks and remove any that they find. Then, people should shower to help remove any ticks they may have missed. Clothes may be put in the dryer on high heat to help kill any ticks that might still be stuck to the clothes.

Landis Valley to offer Winter Institute
After a five-year hiatus, the Landis Valley Institute, a series of in-depth traditional craft classes, lectures, and field trips, has returned with a new logo and format.
The Winter Institute will take place from Friday to Sunday, March 22 to 24, and will offer eight classes and a behind-the-scenes Landis Valley tour. Classes will vary in length from one to three days.
Participants may learn to graft a fruit tree, make redware ornaments with sgraffito or slip decorations, learn the history and technique of theorem painting and create an artwork, or cook over an open hearth in a one-day class. They may weave a wool drying basket, complete a blacksmithing project, or learn about the technique and history of tape weaving in a two-day class. A threeday workshop will explore how fleece becomes fabric.
Proceeds will benefit the museum. There is a discount for Landis Valley Associates members. To learn more, visit www .landisvalleymuseum.org/ winter-institute-2024/.
Presentation to focus on the Four Chaplains
The Military Oral History Club of Lancaster County will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 27, at 7 p.m. at VFW Post 2435, 401 Manor St., Columbia. The meeting is open to the public.
The speaker will be Lou Lavetan, a board member of the Four Chaplains’ Memorial of York County. He will present the story of the four chaplains who perished on the USAT Dorchester on Feb. 3, 1943. The ship was torpedoed by a German submarine off Newfoundland in the North Atlantic. Of the 902 men aboard the ship, only 230 were rescued. Among those who perished were four chaplains of different faiths who gave up their life vests to others when the supply ran out.
