Strasburg Heritage Society will hold Secret Garden Tour
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDThe Strasburg Heritage Society’s Secret Garden Tour will return to Strasburg from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 8, and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 9. Discounted tickets are available to purchase online and at various shops in Strasburg until Thursday, June 6, including Speckled Hen and Main Street Antiques. Additional tickets will be available on the day of the event at Strasburg Presbyterian Church, 101 S. Decatur St.
Each ticket holder may attend one or both days of the tour, which will be held rain or shine. Upon picking up a ticket, tourists will receive a list of all locations included in the tour, and they may visit the locations in any order. Owners of the featured gardens will be present to point out the qualities that make their
property unique and to answer tourists’ questions.
This year’s Secret Garden Tour will include nine private gardens throughout Strasburg, as well as the community park. The Heritage Society revealed that the garden at Gonder Mansion, located on West Main Street, will also be included in the tour.
The Queen Anne-style estate was built by Benjamin Gonder in the early 20th century, and it features elaborate Victorian-era architecture and a large garden.
“Anyone in the Strasburg area who wishes to share a garden with the community are welcome to be in the tour,” said Heather Reynolds, who co-chairs the event with Anna Ranck. “It’s a lot of fun, and it’s a neat opportunity to bring people into our community.”
The proceeds of the Secret Garden Tour will benefit the

Attendees will have an opportunity to bid on various artworks created by the prolific Mountville artist, and proceeds from the auction will benefit the Lancaster Museum of Art, the Demuth Foundation and the Ware Center at Millersville University. A reception will start at
5 p.m., and a preview will take place on Wednesday, June 5, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
This is the second time Ron Ettelman has organized an auction for his work. The first auction was held in 2021 after he and his wife, Virginia, closed their custom frame shop and art gallery, Dream Framer and the Ron Ettelman Gallery, in Mountville. Ron and Virginia operated the business for 47 years. After closing the doors to Dream Framer, Ron needed to move his large collection in a short

Strasburg Heritage Society. Founded in 1972, the organization’s mission is to cultivate what it calls Strasburg’s primary assets, including the authenticity of its historic town and cultural heritage. The group uses the acronym PEAR to define the four key elements of its mission: preservation of historic buildings and documents, education of local residents on the advantages of preserving the past, development of an appreciation for the area’s culture and restoration of historic buildings. The Strasburg Heritage Society recently revamped its logo to feature a pear tree, one of the many fruits traditionally grown in Strasburg.

Veritas Community posts sermon series
The Veritas Community will launch a new sermon series titled “????” on Sunday, June 2. The congregation gathers every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. on the second floor of HUB 450, 450 N. Prince St. Lancaster. The event begins with 15 minutes of fellowship time.
In the Bible’s accounts of Jesus’ three-year earthly ministry, Jesus asked 307 questions, was asked 183, and only directly answered three of the questions he was asked. In preparation for the sermon series, leaders at the Veritas Community polled their congregation to find out what questions attendees wanted to explore.
The questions will include “If someone lives a good life full of love, grace, and kingdom values, but has never heard of Jesus, what happens to them when they die?” based on Romans 2:12-16 on June 2; “What does it mean in today’s political climate and world situation to, according to Psalm 122:6, ‘Pray for the peace of Jerusalem?’” based on Psalm 122:6-9 and Joshua 5:13-15 on June 9; and “Tongues: What are they?” based on Acts 2:1-4 and 1 Corinthians 14:1-25 on June 16.
On June 23 and 30, the sermons will focus on atonement theories. The first week will
feature the following topics and Scriptures: penal substitutionary atonement theory, Romans 3:21-26; ransom atonement theory, Matthew 20:20-28; and moral influence atonement theory, 1 Peter 2:22. The second week will feature the following topics and Scriptures: Christus victor, Colossians 1:13-14 and 2:1315; satisfaction atonement theory, Hebrews 9:22; and

Art auction
period of time; the auction allowed him to find homes for his artworks quickly, in addition to raising funds for local art museums. Ron, who is now 80 years old, decided to hold another auction this year to help him relocate his creations and support the art community in Lancaster.
“I’m calling it a ‘one-man auction,’ which I thought would be a goofy, fun thing to call it,” Ron said. “This year’s situation is almost identical to the first auction. For the first one, I thought, ‘What am I going to do now that the shop is closed?’ This one is ‘I’m 80 now. What am I going to do with all this stuff?’”
Ron describes his work as spontaneous, and he said no two
pieces are the same. The auction will include items made over the course of Ron’s 60-year-long career, and many of the artworks will come to the sale from a recent exhibit at the Lancaster Museum of Art titled “Visions from the World of Ron Ettelman.”
Ron will donate half of all
proceeds from the auction to the local art community. Twenty-five percent of the profits will be split between the Lancaster Museum of Art and the Demuth Foundation, and 25% will be given to Millersville University to support creative programs and events at the Ware Center on the school’s campus.

Classical guitar concert planned
Award-winning classical guitarist Andrew Oswinkle will be featured in a 30-minute concert on First Friday, June 7, at 8 p.m. at First Reformed Church, 40 E. Orange St., Lancaster. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m.
The program will include selections from Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1, “Vals” Opus 8 No. 4 by Agustin Barrios, “Asturias” by the Spanish composer Isaac Albeniz, and Oswinkle’s own arrangement of the hymn “Be Thou My Vision.”
Oswinkle was born and raised in Baltimore and received his master’s degree in guitar performance and pedagogy from the Conservatory of the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University. While there, he was selected to represent his studio in Peabody’s Friday Noon concert series and had many masterclasses with renowned guitarists such as Andrew Zohn, Allan Neave, and Sergio Assad. After his first year of study at Pea-
body, Oswinkle began participating in competitions throughout the region and setting up his own concerts locally. In 2019, he placed third in the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Competition and placed as a semifinalist in his first-ever appearance in the Appalachian GuitarFest Solo Guitar Competition. Since then, he has continued competing, receiving second place at the 2022 Southern Guitar Competition and advancing to the semifinals in many other competitions.
Since graduating, Oswinkle has been a teacher and regular performer in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C., areas. He continues to study with prominent guitarists and attend festivals and competitions. He also brings music into the local community by playing for local events, schools, and nontraditional venues.

County, and its representatives were accompanied by several adoptable dogs on opening night. The event raised more than $800 for the foundation. We Love Our Pets’ opening night was sponsored by Metro Pet Vet, an animal hospital based in Lancaster city.
Every year, art teachers in school districts such as Conestoga Valley, Warwick, Penn Manor, Solanco and many others partner with Mulberry Art Studios to incorporate the We Love Our Pets show in their curric-
ulum. Students are able to submit artwork made in class for a chance to be featured in the exhibit.
Three artists received awards for pieces entered in the show: the youth People’s Choice award was given to Jinx Canfield of Ephrata for the painting “Eloise,” Violet van der Meij of Lancaster earned Best in Show in the youth category for her piece “Space Aussie,” and Jen van der Meij of Lancaster received the Best in Show and People’s Choice awards for her paintings “Colonel Sanders” and “Jessie,” respectively.
“I enjoy sculpture and drawing but I didn’t have the patience to work with acrylic on canvas when I was younger, so I’m not as experienced with it yet,” said 16-year-old Canfield. who used acrylic paint to make “Eloise.” “Eloise, the pup, developed some recent health issues limiting her time here with us, so this is going to end up as a sort of memorial and remembrance piece.”
Violet, who is Jen’s 11-year-old daughter, said she decided to paint an Australian Shepherd as it is her
favorite breed. “I enjoy all mediums of art, but I went with watercolor and ink because it was a progression from some of the pieces I submitted last year,” Violet added. “I allowed myself to use more imagination this year by putting my Aussie into a space environment.”
“I enjoyed watching Violet be more comfortable with exploring this year, and I love how her pieces turned out,” Jen said. “She’s a talented young lady, and I loved sharing this experience with her.”
Jen’s paintings incorporated gold leaf, a technique that she had never experimented with before.
“Jessie” depicts Jen’s childhood pet donkey, and “Colonel Sanders” portrays a cat owned by Jen’s close friends. “For ‘Jessie,’ I wanted my love of donkeys to be represented with an over-the-top background, flooding the entire piece with gold leaf before painting over it with acrylic,” Jen said. “For ‘Colonel Sanders,’ I used gold leaf as a much more subtle accent, but I exaggerated the colors of his fur to add some interest. I made him larger than life to represent how loved he is by his owners.”
