Lampeter-Strasburg

The legacy of the Strasburg Wavers

It’s impossible to know what’s going on in a stranger’s life.

Whether you’re commuting to work, making a trip to the grocery store or simply walking down the sidewalk in your neighborhood, you’re bound to pass several people who you’ve never met before. The strangers we pass every day have a unique story and their own struggles that everyone else is unaware of, and you never know how much you can

impact someone’s life by extending a single act of kindness. Tony Thomas and Randy Schamber, locally known as the Strasburg Wavers, are a perfect example of how a small act of kindness can make a big difference.

For two years, Thomas and Schamber sat together near the intersection of Strasburg Pike and Lincoln Highway. The two men shared a mission to put a smile on strangers’ faces, which they accomplished by smiling and waving as cars passed by. While the gesture may seem small, it sent ripples through the community and earned them the title of the Strasburg Wavers. In addition to individuals in the area, the Strasburg Wavers became noticed by local businesses such as Joe On The Go Coffee Co. Roughly one year ago, the mobile cafe visited Thomas to give him a free coffee and speak with him for a few minutes, declaring that with Thomas

and Joe On The Go at the top and bottom of the Southern End, 5 miles of road were covered with kindness.

Thomas and Schamber forged a close bond with each other through their quest of kindness, spreading their contagious smiles as a team until Thomas passed away on June 17. Schamber and many community members

shared posts online mourning Thomas’ death and honoring his legacy of spreading joy, and Joe On The Go donated 10% of all sales for one week to Thomas’ family to help cover funeral expenses. “We’ve never met anyone who lived out our mission of spreading kindness more so than Tony,” the business said in a Facebook post. “Tony blessed

thousands of drivers every day with a huge smile and a waving hand.”

Although Schamber and Thomas sat together for two years, Schamber became ill for several months, requiring him to move his chair to a shady spot farther away from the intersection. Many community members only noticed Thomas during this

The American Red Cross estimates that roughly 99% of the population is eligible to donate blood, but only 3% of Americans regularly donate. Although blood drives are frequently held across the United States, many potential donors are unaware of how simple the process of giving blood truly is and how many lives it could save. Kathryn Davis, a resident of Willow Street and recent graduate of Lampeter-Strasburg High School, is spearheading a movement to show the community how almost anyone can become a hero by donating blood.

PhlebotomyFam began as a community service initiative Davis created as a contestant in the Miss Lancaster County scholarship pageant. Each candidate is required to design a service project as part of the competition, and Davis said she chose to raise awareness of donating blood due to the impact it’s had in her life. Davis’ mother, Jozlyn Grodski, frequently donated blood while Davis was growing up; Grodski and Davis would often make their trips to the blood bank into a fun outing that included getting lunch and visiting a nail salon together. Davis was also inspired to create PhlebotomyFam due to seeing the importance of blood transfusions firsthand after a car accident in 2021. While riding in a bus with 31 others on the way home from a youth group retreat, the driver experienced a stroke and

Community Foundation plans summer events

The Lancaster County Community Foundation, together with its partners, has announced Summer for Lancaster, an interactive experience celebrating the Lancaster County of today and inviting residents to imagine their shared future for tomorrow. Partners, including the City of Lancaster, Steinman Institute for Civic Engagement, and ATOMIC, have joined with

the foundation with the goal of amplifying classic Lancaster city events and delivering a fresh, collaborative summer celebration for Lancaster County. In 2024, the Lancaster County Community Foundation is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Summer for Lancaster invites all county residents to experience a new kind of collaboration and imagine what is possible for the next 100 years.

Upcoming activities will include a community dance party on Friday, July 19, from 8 to 9 p.m. at Binns Park, 120 N. Queen St., Lancaster. JW Spurlock will lead a line dance. There is no charge to participate.

The New Holland Band will perform in concert on Sunday, July 21, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Binns Park. The program will include marches, Broadway and movie classics, overtures, and patriotic tunes. The New Holland Band has been performing in Lancaster and the See Events pg

lost control of the vehicle.

Davis and a few other students only sustained minor injuries, but several other passengers would not have survived the crash without the blood transfusions they received while recovering in a hospital.

“My main goal is to save lives. I encourage other people to donate blood because it only takes a few minutes, and it makes such a big difference,” said Davis. “There’s a huge lack of awareness in the community right now of this awesome superpower that most of the population has.”

Davis said she spreads her message by introducing the topic of blood donation into everyday conversations with friends and family. PhlebotomyFam is a platform

Davis uses to reach a wider audience by maintaining social media accounts to highlight local blood drives, fun facts and general information about giving blood.

“What I really appreciate about (PhlebotomyFam) is that it isn’t trying to start new blood drives all the time,” Grodski said. “We’ve noticed the issue isn’t that there aren’t enough blood drives; it’s about making sure every slot is filled.”

eral Health (LGH) and the American Red Cross to not only highlight blood drives, but to make people aware of donation centers such as LGH that receive donations year-round. Grodski added that according to the American Red Cross, the national blood shortage would be solved if 1% more of the population donated blood. Davis is currently using PhlebotomyFam to highlight the annual blood drive held in memory of Lampeter-Strasburg alumnus Ryan Smith. The event will take place from noon to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 13, at First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg, 101 S. Decatur St. To learn more, search “PhlebotomyFam” on Facebook or Instagram.

time, leading some drivers to believe Thomas was the sole Strasburg Waver.

In the weeks following Thomas’ death, several drivers accused Schamber of trying to take Thomas’ place. “It was and still is difficult to look at Tony’s chair without shedding some tears,” Shamber wrote in a Facebook post. “I will continue to sit and wave when I’m able to do so.”

A group of local residents will gather with Schamber

on Friday, July 26, to honor Thomas’ memory and sit in solidarity with the remaining Strasburg Waver.

Program to focus on African American burial grounds

Historic Rock Ford will host a presentation, “Exploring the Traditions and Features of Pennsylvania’s Historic African American Burial Grounds,” on Saturday, July 27, at 2 p.m. The program will take place in the Langmuir Education Room located on the first floor of the Rock Ford Barn, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster.

Over the last two decades, the presenter, Steven Burg, has had the opportunity to visit and study many of Pennsylvania’s historic African American cemeteries and burial grounds. To date, more than 150 burial grounds have been identified across the state that were created primarily by or for the burial of people of

color. These sites represent unique spaces reflecting the culture, traditions, and histories of local African American communities. In his presentation, Burg will explore traditions and features of these African American cemeteries and explain why he believes it is important that these places be documented, appreciated, and preserved.

Burg is a professor of history at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania, where he specializes in public history and historic preservation. He received his bachelor’s degree in history from Colgate University and his master’s and doctoral degrees in United States history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. For more than two decades, he has been researching African American cemeteries and burial grounds across Pennsylvania and working with grassroots organizations to document and preserve those sites. He is currently the secretary of Pennsylvania Hallowed Grounds, a statewide organization

Burg’s presentation is a complement to Historic Rock Ford’s 2024 Focus Exhibit “A Time to Mourn: Death and Mourning in Pennsylvania 1750-1820” in the John J. Snyder Jr. Gallery.

Get to know your neighbor at upcoming fundraiser for SNM

Britain Hill Venue & Vineyard, 790 N. Little Britain Road, Quarryville, will host its annual fundraiser for Solanco Neighborhood Ministries (SNM) from 5 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31. The rain-or-shine event will highlight SNM’s efforts to serve the community, and it will feature live entertainment, auctions and various food trucks. Admission to the fundraiser will be free, but attendees are encouraged to register online in advance at https://tinyurl .com/SNMbritainhill24. Food and beverages will be available to purchase from food trucks such as 22BBQ and Italian Oven on Wheels, and Penny’s Ice Cream will vend frozen desserts during the fundraiser. The event will also include a silent auction as well as a live auction for the first time this year. Attendees will have an opportunity to bid on a variety of items and experiences, including tickets to the Fulton Theatre, an antique quilt, two vouchers for a glassblowing class and a sailing activity on Chesapeake Bay.

Britain Hill first hosted the annual fundraiser shortly after the coronavirus pandemic, when SNM’s executive director, Teresa Dolan, proposed a collaboration for a new event called “Do You Know Your Neighbor?” The goal of the event was to give members of the public insight on different types of programs SNM offers the Southern End, which comprise more than its food bank in Quarryville. During the first fundraiser at Britain Hill, SNM representatives set up stations to highlight specific areas of focus, including rent and utility assistance, and initiatives to distribute gas cards, diapers and school supplies to local families.

“This event not only brings awareness of what services (SNM) has to offer, but it’s proved to be a great fundraiser for them,” said Debbie Helm, the owner of Britain Hill. Since founding the venue in 2017, Helm and her husband, Ken, have frequently organized events to give local nonprofits a platform and amplify their impact in the community.

Representatives from SNM will be present to

share information on the nonprofit’s many programs and to accept donations from supporters. Donations and the proceeds from both auctions will help SNM cover its operational costs and program expenses, as well as help the organization fund a new initiative to combat housing insecurity across Lancaster County. “We’re definitely seeing an uptick in the number of people facing issues with housing,” said Christal Pritchard,

SNM’s housing resource advocate. “Our goal is to holistically address the problem through a program that helps individuals get out of a cycle of homelessness.” Pritchard added that SNM is in the early stages of designing the program, but it hopes to build relationships with landlords and to offer budgeting plans as part of the new initiative. For more information about SNM, visit https:// solanconeighborhood ministries.org.

Riverboat tours planned

Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA) will offer riverboat tours on Thursdays to Sundays through October. Excursions will embark from the dock at SNHA’s Zimmerman Center for Heritage, 1706 Long Level Road, Wrightsville, and travel the Lake Clarke region of the Susquehanna River while tour guides share stories of the river’s history and heritage.

River Discovery Tours are a one-hour excursion for 22 passengers. The program explores the scenic Susquehanna River landscape, wildlife, and history through stories of the past and present.

Themed boat tours also offer a one-hour themed

excursion for 22 passengers. The tours are available at special times throughout the season and highlight heritage stories not covered in the regular River Discovery Tours. Topics include the Civil War, native peoples, wildlife, and the supernatural.

Sunset Cruises are oneand-a-half-hour sunset tours for 14 passengers. People may learn stories of the river and enjoy scenic views. They may bring their own snacks and beverages.

All tours will be conducted aboard the Chief Uncas electric boat. The vessel was built in 1912 so that Adolphus Busch, co-founder of the American beer company bearing his name, could

enjoy cruises at his summer estate on Otsego Lake in Cooperstown, N.Y., the headwaters of the Susquehanna River. SNHA purchased the Chief Uncas in 2021 and transported the boat to Pennsylvania. Donors for the project included Ann Barshinger of Lancaster and Doug Hoke and George and Bambi Long of York. Additional grant support was provided from the National Park Service and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation & Natural Resources’ Heritage Areas Program. Brookfield Renewable Energy also contributed.
