Lions Club slates veterans’ concert
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
The Strasburg Lions Club will hold the 32nd annual veterans’ concert on Sunday, Aug. 4. The free show will begin at 7 p.m. on the lawn of the Strasburg Borough Office, 145 Precision Ave., Strasburg. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for outdoor seating. In the event of rain, the show will be moved to the Strasburg Fire Station, 203 Franklin St., Strasburg.
The concert will entail a performance from the Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band, which traditionally features a selection of patriotic songs to honor Americans who have served in the armed forces. The Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band will also play various popular tunes during the concert.
The primary goal of the event is to recognize and show the community’s appreciation for its members who are currently
serving in the military or who have served in the past. The Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band will perform a song representing each branch of the United States’ military, as well as “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Every year, veterans in the audience are asked to stand when their respective branch’s song is played to be recognized for their service.
“There are a lot of summer concerts in the area that tend to feature more modern music and genres like folk and rock ’n’ roll,” said Bruce Ryder, a member of the Strasburg Lions Club and Strasburg Borough’s mayor. “This is a little more traditional, and we always get a pretty good turnout of veterans who might want to hear something that’s different from many other shows.”
The Strasburg Lions Club sponsors and organizes the annual veterans’ concert, which was created by the late Donnie Bachman. Bachman partnered with members of a local VFW

Compass Mark wants to be an ideological lightning rod and a guiding light in the community. The nonprofit approaches its mission through three guiding principles - “follow the science,” “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” and “the sooner the better.”
The ultimate goal is to manage and curb addiction or control
the behavioral part of it that can be controlled.
“Compass Mark can help you get to where you want to go in life; we can keep you on the right path,” said Teri Miller-Landon, Compass Mark’s director of programs. “There’s so much science out there on what leads kids to addiction. We’re not preaching abstinence. We’re trying to delay use as much as possible. We’re teaching them to make other

Headquartered at 1891 Santa Barbara Drive, Suite 104, Lancaster, Compass Mark attempts to reach children in kindergarten through grade 12 before alcohol, drugs and gambling do. The veterans’ concert is one of many projects the Strasburg Lions Club is involved with in the local community. The organization sustains its service projects via frequent fundraising events and through partnerships with local organizations. The Lions Club often works with organizations such as the Strasburg Rail Road and the Strasburg-Heisler Library, which make donations to the club. In exchange, the Lions Club provides volunteers to help with staffing the organizations’ events. Members of the Lions Club also frequently oversee various service projects that the organization funds with the proceeds from its events and partnerships.

“Before I came here, I didn’t know what prevention was,” said Tim Steffen, director of development and communications at Compass Mark. “We want to make clear how prevention works. We’re actually saving lives. For every dollar spent on prevention, you’re saving $18 in the future. You’re saving taxpayers by nipping it in the bud.”
Some of the factors that put kids at risk for addiction include low commitment toward school, parental atti -
“For kids 13 or younger who use any kind of substance, they have a 70% chance to develop an addiction in seven years,” said Miller-Landon. “We use data to know what’s going on in our community. It’s things we need to target as we design our programs. It’s much, much easier to prevent bad habits from starting than to try and change them. That’s much of the thinking. Sometimes substance abuse can lead to contact with the criminal justice system and a criminal record.”
Overseen by a board of directors, Compass Mark employs 20 full-time workers and about 20 part-time
staff members, all trained to deliver the curriculum.
“A lot of people are skeptical about prevention,” said Miller-Landon. “But prevention works. It’s about talking to kids often and talking to kids early. When kids are younger, they’re sponges. They just soak it in. They’re at an age when they still think (adults) know what they’re talking about.”
Compass Mark was founded in 1966 as the National Council for Alcoholism, Lancaster County. Then the organization’s scope was broadened in the 1970s and ’80s to include a focus on preventing illegal drug use, and later gambling.
“We’ve evolved with the community,” said Steffen. For additional information on Compass Mark, go to www.compassmark.org.

The texts purport to be from Pennsylvania Turnpike Toll Services and center around urgent requests to settle unpaid tolls; the texts claim that the recipient will be charged an additional amount if an overdue balance is not paid. Similar scams have recently been reported by toll agencies across the country.

The service will include performances by the Willow Bells Six, a handbell choir from Willow Valley, and a choir made up of St. Michael members and friends who will sing part of a hymn in German. The service will feature the reed organ that was used for decades to support the Sunday liturgy.
The first Lutherans arrived in the area in 1720, and the first ministerial services are recorded to have started in 1730. The congregation met in a log building for many years until it laid the cornerstone for a new building in Strasburg in 1806. Although the building has been modified over the years, the original pews and other artifacts are still at the church. In 1998 the congregation dedicated a pipe organ which it built over an eight-year period. It has three manuals, 26 ranks and 1,593 pipes. A 2009 addition made the building handicapped-accessible.
The sanctuary is air conditioned, and parking is available.

A 654-page medical textbook used in China, “A Comprehensive Guide to Geriatric Rehabilitation, 3rd Edition,” has significant roots in Lancaster County. More than a dozen medical providers connected to the county wrote 25% of the book’s chapters. Combined, these practitioners have
provided care to hundreds of thousands of southcentral Pennsylvania residents.
Dr. Tim Kauffman, a native of Lancaster County, was the lead editor of this internationally acclaimed book. After graduating from McCaskey High School, Gettysburg College, the University of Pennsylvania, and the
Medical College of Virginia and serving in the Army, he started his physical therapy office in Lancaster in 1981.
Dr. Michael Moran, professor emeritus from Misericordia University, Dallas, Pa., was a co-editor of the text. He lives in Lancaster.
Dr. Ron Scott, another co-editor, was the director of the physical therapy program at Lebanon Valley College.
Dr. John Barr, the fourth co-editor, is a professor emeritus from St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa. Both he and Scott sent students to Lancaster to train at Kauffman Physical Therapy.
Contributors from Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health include Dr. Christine Stabler, medical director of women’s health for Lancaster General Hospital, as well as Dr. M. Clive Perry, who works in radiology.
Dr. Beth Kauffman, who now treats patients at HARTZ Physical Therapy, and Ben Kauffman, physical therapy assistant, wrote about aquatic (water) therapy. They studied in China years ago. Beth is a board-certified geriatric clinical specialist, and she and Tim teach a “Better Bones, Better Balance” class at the Grandview and St. Matthew Lutheran churches. The classes are open to the public.
Dr. Michelle Bolton teaches at the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center (CTC) and provides physical therapy instruction online to patients and students.
Rich Mower, physical therapist assistant, was a professor at Central Penn College and now gives individual instruction in strength training, fitness ,and health in Lancaster.
Mary Ann Wharton, who holds a Master of Science in physical therapy, retired from St. Francis University, Loretto, and now resides in Lancaster County. Additionally, she is involved in professional organizations in Pennsylvania and nationally.
Dr. Christi Stewart treated patients at Geriatric Associates, Lancaster General Hospital, but has relocated to Roanoke, Va., where she continues providing geriatric and palliative care.
Dr. Emily Germain-Lee, formerly at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore and now at UConn Health, Farmington, Conn., spent time in her
formative years in Lancaster with her parents.
Similarly, Dr. Kristin Von Nieda grew up locally, attending Ephrata High School and Millersville University. Von Nieda taught at Arcadia University, Glenside.
“A Comprehensive Guide to Geriatric Rehabilitation, 3rd Edition” represents the combined wisdom of 95 contributors from 12 countries. Dr. Hao Liu chose this book to be translated to
Chinese because he thought it is the best text about geriatric rehabilitation. Liu is the director of the physical therapy program at Louisiana State University in New Orleans. The release of the book was delayed because of the pandemic. The Chinese version was copyrighted in 2023, with copies released in America this year. The second edition was translated into Portuguese and is used around the world.
Reading of new play set
The Lancaster Dramatists’ Platform will present a reading of “The Onboarding Testimonial,” a new play by award-winning playwright Bruce Walsh, on Saturday, July 27. The event will take place at 11 a.m. at the Franklin & Marshall College Philadelphia Alumni Writers House, 633 College Ave., Lancaster. It is co-sponsored by Creative Works of Lancaster.
The play, set in 2070, features a corporate human resources department that discovers that none of the current staff members is capable of creating personal statements without AI assistance. The department seeks to hire an elderly millennial to help.
Since Walsh received his Master of Fine Arts in playwriting from Indiana University Bloomington in 2017, his plays have been produced across the country, winning the Heideman Award, the Kennedy Center’s Gary Garrison National Ten Minute Play Award, and the Maxim Mazumdar New Play Competition. Previously, he was a longtime arts reporter for the Philadelphia Metro and City Paper. He currently teaches literature, creative writing, and theater at Messiah University and Elizabethtown College. Walsh has been selected as a 2025 William Inge Center playwright in residence, giving him the opportunity to live in Inge’s boyhood home for five weeks.
The reading is free and open to the public, with donations accepted to help cover expenses. For more information, email lancasterdramatists@gmail .com or visit www.lancaster dramatists.org.
The Lancaster Dramatists’ Platform was formed in 2005 and has presented many plays by various members, several of which have been developed into fully staged productions. The group meets biweekly to read and discuss new work, as well as to plan and rehearse public readings, giving playwrights a chance to hear their words performed by actors in front of an audience. More information is available at the aforementioned website or by emailing the previously

Although Joyfully Made Fellowship regularly organizes fundraising events throughout the year, this is the first time the group will hold an event that incorporates a car wash, a barbecue and a bake sale. The event is being coordinated by Celeste Esposito and her husband, Eric, whose daughter Bella has attended Joyfully Made Fellowship programs for the last nine years. Eric, who has culinary experience preparing food for weddings and other events in the past, will prepare the food for the barbecue portion of the fundraiser. Additional food will be available to purchase during the event, including items such as hot dogs, beverages and cookies. Several parents and caregivers of Joyfully Made Fellowship members will sell coffee and a variety of homemade baked goods, including brownies and pastries.
Celeste said she decided to help organize the new fundraiser to assist Joyfully Made Fellowship’s founder, Tami Shaub. In addition to managing the ministry’s programs and activities, Shaub organizes events such as the annual talent show. After seeing the value of Shaub’s programs firsthand as the par-
ents of a longtime participant, Celeste and Eric said they wished to express their gratitude to Shaub while helping her sustain the group. “(Shaub) goes above and beyond for this ministry. She’s a wonderful lady, and the students personally love her,” added Celeste. “It’s truly a wonderful thing for our students to be able to go somewhere they feel comfortable. Everybody in the group is really caring and understanding.”
Another goal of the new fundraiser is to help Joyfully Made Fellowship cover its operating costs and utility expenses for the facility that it hosts its activities in. The group previously met at Wesley Church in Quarryville, and it transitioned to its cur-
rent location on Mt. Hope Road last year.
“We hope people in the community come check (the fundraiser) out, even if they just stop by to say hi to everyone,” Celeste said. “They’re all a bunch of really caring individuals who love getting together, singing and sharing a meal.”

Exhibit to feature items from the ocean
The North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster, recently opened an exhibit titled “Shallow Seas.”
The exhibit showcases specimens of sea life, shells, and plants from the more than 250,000 objects in the North Museum’s collection. These items depict life that is present in the Caribbean Sea, the coastal Atlantic Ocean, and the Arctic Ocean, and how each has developed traits to survive and sometimes thrive in its environment. The exhibit includes items that have not been displayed since the 1960s, and it is the first exhibit to be fully curated from North Museum’s collections.
Visitors may lend their creative touch to a collaborative artwork project by coloring pictures of underwater life and adding them to a depiction of a coral reef.
The exhibit is self-directed through signage and bold graphics, which are presented in both English and Spanish. “Shallow Seas” will remain a main exhibit of the North Museum through May 31, 2025.
Now in its 72nd year, the North Museum impacts thousands of local students and their families annually through its education initiatives in the museum, in the community, and at home. Programs include field trips, early childhood education programs, summer camps, STEM Sisters, the Science and Engineering Fair for middle and high school students, and many other programs designed to create access to free and reducedcost STEM learning opportunities and to strengthen the foundation of youths in the Lancaster community and beyond.
