With sirens blaring and lights flashing, a parade on July 15 celebrated LampeterStrasburg’s softball teams’ state championship victory. Escorted by police cars, fire trucks and other vehicles, the team along with parents, friends, administrators, youth groups and others, wound their way through the community, starting at the Strasburg Railroad and ending at Martin Mylin Middle School. Coaches, school administrators and government officials spoke in front of the crowd after the parade. Words like hard-working, humble, respectful, and amazing were just a few repeated by the various speakers.
The Pioneers came from behind to defeat Armstrong 10-7 on June 18 at Penn State University. It was the second state title for the seniors who rose to the top in 2018. In 2019 the team again reached the finals but settled for second place and, of course, last year the pandemic prevented a season. So, in three seasons, the Pioneers played in three state finals. The senior class finished with an 81-8 record overall. The squad was 30-1 with 29 consecutive wins this season. They scored 328 runs on 128 hits, which included 33 homers, and gave up 58 runs.
“Wow, what a run. What we did was amazing,” said head coach Gene Charles also pointing out that, in addition to winning the state crown, the team won their section title, the Lancaster-Lebanon League title and Districts.
The Pioneers are Champions. They won with class and made those around them proud to be a part of their accomplishments. They leave behind a legacy and have set a bar of excellence for others to follow. And hopefully, if those youngsters were paying attention, they’ll say ‘I want to be like that.’

Hess noted that she hopes the event will change how attendees and viewers see their own stories. “Annual Storytelling Night helps people recognize the incredible gift of our stories,” she said. “It honors everyday lived experiences of people in our communities.” She added that the event is a step toward the LMHS vision of “a world where people reflect on their own stories and learn to value the stories of others across boundaries.”

Although educational goals, skill building and job attainment are always on the forefront for adult learners entering our program, skilling up after the pandemic takes on a whole new meaning and will be an important step for many workers who lost their jobs during COVID-19 restrictions. For some, it will mean improving basic literacy in reading, math, or English. For others, it will mean career exploration and sharpening skills to move into postsecondary education or training.
The Success Centers in Lancaster and Lebanon counties are places where adults can get the support they need to build skills so that they can transform their lives, sustain their families and strengthen their communities.*
What skills and knowledge do you have to share with an adult student to help them reach their goals?

Alexa Glatch was awarded the wildcard for this year’s tournament.
Many of the world’s current and potential future stars will compete in the event. The players will compete in singles and doubles for a purse of $100,000 - the largest in the tournament’s 14-year history.
Dozens of alumni from the event have gone on to achieve successful professional careers, including Elise Mertens, Jessica Pegula, Madison Brengle, and Jennifer Brady. Brady is representing the U.S. at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
A program that Pipkin would like to introduce to the tournament this year is “Serving Up Aces.” Pipkin plans to contact about 70 to 80 sponsors, asking them to donate $1 for every ace that will be hit during the tournament. “All of the money from this will go to the Hempfield Area Food Pantry, which serves about 350 families within the Hempfield School District,” said Pipkin.
This year’s wildcard was awarded to pro tennis player Alexa Glatch from Newport Beach, Calif. Glatch has been playing tennis since she was 5 years old and went professional at the age of 15. “It’s been a long journey, lots of ups and downs,” said Glatch. “I feel so fortunate to get to do what I love, and I can’t thank Wilson enough for the opportunity to play in the tournament as the wildcard.”
Glatch noted that there will be many great players and a strong field - emphasizing that it may be the strongest field that the tournament has ever had.
Those interested in volunteering or sponsoring the event may contact Pipkin at wpipkin@hempfieldrec.com or 717-471-8286. For more information about the tournament, visit https://bit.ly/kosertennis.
