LS Golfers Upend MT For L-L League Crown
BY MONA STEINHAUER
There’s a new champ in town. Lampeter-Strasburg’s golf team, fresh off their second straight undefeated section championship, ended Manheim Township’s 11-year reign atop the Lancaster-Lebanon League leaderboard, claiming the team title by a single stroke, 308-309.
The Streaks have won 21 titles overall since 1972. This is Lampeter’s first.
Ben Wilson shot a team-best 74 and the fifth lowest score of the day. Co-captains Matt Wilson and Gehrig Harsh along with Morgan Smith all finished at 78 and accounted for the 308 total.
Jason Long (90) and Isaiah Parido (92) also competed.
TENNIS
The girls’ tennis team ran its winning streak to five straight with a 7-0 shutout over visiting Solanco on Sept. 24 and a 6-1 result at Cocalico three days later. That run ended with a 5-0 loss to Manheim Township (11-0) last Wednesday.
Ryan and Kylie Gerhardt, Laura Leaman and Lindsey Steele and Maddie Snyder and Katie Finn all posted 8-1 victories over Solanco.
Ryan Gerhardt went on to post a shutout at No. 1 singles while K. Gerhardt, Leaman and Steele provided the sweep with 6-1, 6-1 wins at No. 2 through 4, respectively.
Cocalico proved to be more of a challenge. The Gerhardt’s’ won 8-4 while Leaman and Snyder won 8-3. Cocalico took the third doubles for their only point in the match.
R. Gerhardt, K. Gerhardt, Leaman and Snyder all won in straight sets. Leaman worked the tightest match of the day, winning 7-6, 6-3.
BOYS’ SOCCER
After suffering losses to Manheim Township (4-0 Sept. 25) and Elizabethtown (2-1 Sept. 28) the boys’ soccer team sits at 0-6 in Section Two. That record, however, includes six losses determined by a single goal, and two of those were to section leader Elizabethtown.
That was obvious by last Tuesday’s one goal loss to the visiting Bears. Celebrating their seniors, L-S found itself in a scoreless first half only to see the Bears pull out the hard-fought win.
Jack Filius, with an unassisted goal, prevented the shutout.
Two days later, Section Two leader Ephrata (6-1-4) escaped with a 1-0 win on a goal in the 72nd minute.

GIRLS’ SOCCER
After that lopsided loss to Township, the Pioneers have gained traction, winning four straight, including three in four days. They held off Warwick 1-0 in overtime on Sept. 24, turned around and blanked Susquehannock 3-0 the following morning and then, last Monday got the best of Elizabethtown 2-1. Molly Bucher’s header off a corner kick by Tona Harnish in the extra period pushed L-S past the Warriors. Chloe Bucher’s two goal effort fueled Lampeter’s win over Susquehannock. Jenna Daveler also found the back of the net.
L-S last Wednesday night section leader Ephrata prevailed in a tight 1-0 final.
“It’s a challenge to play four games in six days with two of them being huge section games,” Lebo stated.
VOLLEYBALL
The volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss to Ephrata on Sept. 23 and then dropped a 3-1 result at Cocalico on Sept. 28, running their record to 2-4. In tournament action on the 25th they blanked Upper Dauphin but lost to Eastern York in five sets.
FIELD HOCKEY
The field hockey team scored six goals over four games but came away without a single win over the last week. They opened with a 3-2 overtime loss against Manheim Central on the 23rd and six days later dropped a second OT result, this one 4-3 at Elizabethtown. L-S held a 3-2 lead over the Bears with one quarter left but couldn’t deny the hosts who got a pair of goals from Regan Flory, including the game-winner.
Marissa Rice put L-S on the board in the first while Rowan Kimmel and Maggie Swarr scored third quarter goals. Brooke Zuber recorded nine saves.
Against the Barons, both teams found the back of the net in the second and fourth quarters but needed OT to determine the outcome. Rice and Ally Raub were the goal scorers with Tori Heiserman adding two assists.
In non-league play Saturday against Oley Valley, the Pioneers put in a solid effort in a 1-0 loss against a powerhouse Single A school. “Coming in they had scored over 50 goals and had only given up two,” noted head coach Katrina Swarr. “To hold them to one goal was encouraging.”
At home last Monday, LS took a 1-0 lead against Ephrata on Kimmel’s first quarter goal, but it wasn’t enough. The Mounts slowly gained momentum, taking advantage of Pioneer miscues to forge ahead 3-1. Two strokes and a handful of cards made for an interesting game. Zuber did deny one of those strokes.

FOOTBALL
On Northern Lebanon’s grass field Friday, Sept. 24, Lampeter’s senior quarterback Berkeley Wagner rushed for 126 yards and two touchdowns and threw for two more scores as the Pioneers ran away with a 42-2 victory, their fourth straight.
L-S scored on its first possession, a Wagner one-yard keeper that capped a nine-play drive.
In the second quarter, Jonathan Mellinger returned an interception 23 yards for a 14-0 lead.
The Vikings followed with a safety, but the visitors shrugged that off when Wagner found Austin Cole with a 27-yard scoring strike to push the lead to 28-2 at the break. Wagner completed 9-of-11 passes, with Drexton Frank hauling in five, for 155 yards and rushed for another 126 to pace the offense. Carson Coleman added 48 rushing yards and Hildenbrand chipped in with 35.
Mellinger scored on a four-yard TD run early in the third and Wagner raced from 32-yards out to cap the scoring.
Defensively, Julian Lopez and Jackson Heeter both recorded seven solo tackles.
