Connor Hamilton of Strasburg was among the record 34 cadets at University of North Georgia, Dahlonega, Ga., who earned distinguished military student (DMS) status for the 2021-22 academic year. The cadets were honored Sept. 25 at the DMS banquet and Sept. 26 at the DMS review.

To be selected, a cadet must be in the upper half of the academic class, the upper third of the ROTC class, and the upper third of UNG’s Order of Merit List, established by the professor of military science. Additionally, cadets are chosen on the basis of interest and aptitude for military service and outstanding qualities of leadership and high moral character as demonstrated by participation and achievement in campus, civic, and military activities.

Treasury Warns Of Text Message Scam

The Pennsylvania Treasury has advised state residents that scammers are using fraudulent text messages to target recipients of unemployment compensation benefits, potentially including normal unemployment compensation (UC), Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA), and Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC).

One message inaccurately tells recipients that their state-issued ReliaCard account has been temporarily frozen. The message then encourages recipients to clink on a link to verify their identity and card status. Individuals should not click on the link. Neither the Pennsylvania Treasury nor the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry ever embed a link in a text message. Any text that includes a link and claims to be from these agencies should not be trusted.

Individuals should note that it is important to never provide any personally identifiable information, user IDs, or passwords unless they initiated the conversation by contacting the agency directly.

A copy of the full news release from the Pennsylvania Treasury Department is available at www.patreasury.gov by clicking on Newsroom and then the Scam Alert article.

Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer programs to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person fee, and activities will take place at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. Additionally, registration and payment are required by noon on the business day before the event unless otherwise stated. To register, call 717-295-2055 or visit www.lancastercounty parks.org and click on Online Program Registration.

Daisy Girl Scouts: Math in Nature will take place on Saturday, Dec. 4. Three separate programs will be offered for Daisy Girl Scouts age 5 and older in the new badge series. Shapes in Nature will run from 9 to 10:15 a.m., followed by Numbers in Nature from 10:45 a.m. to noon and then Design With Nature from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. Attendees should bring a water bottle, a nut-free snack, and/or lunch (if registering for all three programs).

Introduction to Compass Skills for people of all ages will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 4. Participants will learn about compass use and integrate pace to complete practice courses in the Environmental Center vicinity. Attendees should dress for the weather and for walking on woodland trails and mowed fields.

Munchkin Science: Animals in Winter will be offered to children ages 3 to 5 from 1 to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 7. Participants will learn about the various ways animals survive winter’s freezing temperatures. A naturalist will lead a walk to find signs of animals still active during the winter.

Homeschool Wednesday: Monarch Migration will take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 8. The winter homeschool class for students ages 8 to 12 will study monarch migration. Participants should wear old clothing and plan for indoor and outdoor activity. Children under age 8 may attend if accompanying older siblings.

Jump Into STEM: Painting With Nature, for 3- to 5-yearolds, has been set for Thursday, Dec. 9, from 10 to 11 a.m. Preschool scientists will learn about different parts of evergreen plants, enjoy an interactive presentation, and experiment with using various evergreens as paintbrushes. All supplies will be provided.

Full Moon Scavenger Hunt, for people of all ages, will take place on Dec. 9 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Participants will have free range of the woods and fields surrounding the Environmental Center as they attempt to find all items on the provided scavenger hunt list by the light of the full moon.
