Expo To Provide Youths Venue To Show, Sell Livestock By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The Old Line Youth Livestock Expo will be held on Aug. 22 to 24 to give young people, such as (from left) Madelyn Tedesco, Alex Tedesco, Waylon Kready with Mischief, Kolton Youndt with Diesel, and Kayden Youndt, an opportunity to exhibit and sell their market animals.

Like it has with so many other events, the coronavirus has disrupted fair season. For some people, that simply means fewer milkshakes consumed or carnival games enjoyed. However, for the youths who raise animals to exhibit and subsequently sell, the cancellation of fairs means a significant loss of income. “Most of the livestock had been bought before COVID. These kids have all this money wrapped up in these animals,” said cattleman Jevin Kready, who noted that because specific finish weights are required, livestock must be sold within the timeframes set at the time of purchase. The Kready family has years of experience in raising, showing, and selling livestock. As a 4-H and FFA member,

Biking The Road: Tips For Safe Riding Beautiful weather typically coincides with an increase of bicyclists on the roads. For some riders, cycling is a form of transportation. For others, it is a mode of relaxation and recreation. For everyone, however, safety is paramount. Lancaster Bicycle Club safety director John Mullineaux listed two overarching principles for safe riding: wear a helmet and behave like a vehicle.

Lancaster Bicycle Club safety director John Mullineaux encourages cyclists to wear helmets and behave like vehicles to be safe on the road.

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) requires anyone under the age of 12 to wear a helmet, whether they are operating the bicycle or participating as a passenger on a bike or a bike-pulled trailer. PennDOT does not mandate helmets for riders age 12 and older, but it strongly recommends that everyone wears a helmet. Mullineaux agreed, saying, “Wear a helmet. They do help an enormous amount. I’m 70 years old, and I wear a helmet every time I ride.” Although helmets are regulated for children, the age at which youngsters may ride on the road is not. Instead, that privilege depends on the training and the skill level of the individual rider. Some area school districts provide education to middlegrade students to encourage them to ride bicycles to school. Regardless of age, behaving like a vehicle while riding a bicycle might not be intuitive, but it is worth practicing. According to Mullineaux, in Pennsylvania, cyclists have the right to ride wherever they think it is safe to do so, with the exclusion of riding against traffic. See Bike Safety pg 3

winter and had not yet filled it. Following the Elizabethtown Fair exhibition guidelines, only youths living in Columbia, Donegal, Elizabethtown, Hempfield, Manheim Central, Middletown, Lower Dauphin, Hershey, and Palmyra school districts will be eligible to participate in the Old Line Youth Livestock Expo. Market steers and dairy beef cattle will be judged on Saturday, Aug. 22; market goats and market lambs on Sunday, Aug. 23; and market hogs on Monday, Aug. 24. The event will be closed to spectators. Only exhibitors and parents or guardians will be allowed to attend. “We will be able to do social distancing because we’re just having animals,” Jevin said. “We won’t have livestock here overnight (for exhibitors to attend to).” See Livestock Expo pg 3

Local Author Offers Publishing Advice By Dayna M. Reidenouer

When it comes to publishing a book, there are primarily two ways to go: traditional or independent. Former Quarryville resident Lindsay Bandy opted to follow the traditional route for her historical novel, “Nemesis and the Swan,” which will be released in October. Lindsay first realized that she wanted to become a published author while an English major at Millersville University in the mid-2000s. As a teenager, Lindsay had used poetry as a way to process her emotions, but when she began to pursue publication, she discovered that it is difficult to get poetry published. Instead, she started writing her first historical novel. “I had no idea what I was doing, but it was really fun for me,” Lindsay recalled. After graduating, Lindsay married Clay Bandy and subsequently had two daughters. Lindsay became intimately acquainted with children’s literature by reading to her girls. As the children grew, Lindsay wrote poetry with them, and she began thinking again about publishing. See Local Author pg 2

Lindsay Bandy is the new youth services coordinator for the Manheim Community Library. The former Quarryville resident is the co-regional adviser of the Eastern Pennsylvania Region of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and is publishing her first book this fall.

Jevin began showing beef cattle in middle school, occasionally raising some pigs as well, and he has been in charge of the livestock show at the Manheim Farm Show for a number of years. Jevin’s wife, Courtney, currently shows animals at local fairs, and their oldest child, Waylon, first entered the show ring at age 5. Waylon, who will turn 8 this month, has exhibited goats and pigs, and he wants to add a steer next year. Jevin and a friend, sheep exhibitor Adam Zurin, had joked about hosting a livestock show, but when the Elizabethtown Fair was canceled, they got serious. Jevin, Adam, and about five other people created Old Line Youth Livestock Expo, named for the road the Kreadys’ back driveway meets. The Kreadys’ farm was an ideal place to host the event as they built a barn over the

it. “You get a lot of rejections, and you have to be stubborn. You have to be hard on yourself,” Lindsay remarked. “People who do it have revised and revised. It’s a long process.” - Don’t be fooled: Picture books have fewer words and pages than novels, but that doesn’t make them a breeze to complete. “The words themselves can be easier, but finding a niche and getting those words to work as a 32-page illustrated book can be harder,” Lindsay said, pointing out that the printing process constrains book size. Authors need to have a unique idea and then consider page turns, what words will be on what pages, the intended reading level, and how illustrations will fit. - Be flexible. “Publishers don’t want you to illustrate your own work unless you’re a professional illustrator. You don’t choose,” Lindsay said. “The same works with novels. I try to at least try (the suggested edits) first. Sometimes people can push you to make something better.” Lindsay recently accepted the role of youth services coordinator at Manheim Community Library, and Clay is working in sales for an agricultural publication, so the Bandys have moved to Brownstown to shorten their respective commutes. Lindsay is excited about her new role. “I love working with kids, sharing books with them, and finding books they love,” she said. Currently, the library’s Summer Reading Program is entirely online, but Lindsay is anticipating in-person activities. She would like to offer writing workshops for children and teenagers so they can be creative in a supportive environment. “I would like to see programs that pair up kids with other members of the community - older adults, teenagers with tutoring - to get some intergenerational stuff going on,” she added. Interested individuals may contact Lindsay by visiting www.LindsayBandyBooks.com.

With a new interest in children’s literature, Lindsay found the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) and joined a critique group. She sold several poems to Highlights for Children magazine and volunteered to act as blogmaster for the Eastern Pennsylvania Region of SCBWI. She was later appointed co-regional adviser. Lindsay and her team plan two big conferences for writers every year: one in the spring at the Highlights Foundation retreat center and another in the fall in Philadelphia. Lindsay recommends that aspiring authors attend conferences like those, especially when representatives of major publishing houses participate. “It’s a really nice way to get professional feedback on your work and make personal connections that might get you somewhere,” Lindsay said. The educational opportunities afforded by conferences are also valuable, she asserted. “You meet other people in all different stages of the process. The peer connections are definitely awesome,” Lindsay reflected. “Before I joined SCBWI, I had no idea of what I was doing in publishing. They gave me all the resources to get from where I was to where I wanted to be.” For Lindsay, “getting there” meant pursuing the traditional publishing route. She wanted the support of a publisher, which independently published authors do not have. Lindsay’s publisher is helping to publicize her book, so the marketing does not rest solely on her shoulders. For authors who are seeking traditional publishing, Lindsay offered advice gleaned from personal experience and years of SCBWI membership: - Don’t send your manuscript to everybody. “Agents are looking for specific things,” Lindsay said. “Research the agents and editors who are interested in what you have.” - Get a lot of feedback and polish your book before you submit

MERCHANDISER - Manheim Central Edition -

way), in order for them to pass you, they must do a clean pass. Mullineaux related that he once encountered a person at a safety presentation who was upset that cyclists were taking up part of a lane while ascending a hill. He asked the individual how they would have behaved if the cyclist had instead been a piece of heavy equipment, emphasizing that it is important to give cyclists the same respect. On one-way streets, Mullineaux regularly rides in the middle of a lane because vehicles can safely pass him in the adjacent lane. For single-lane roundabouts, which have been slowly cropping up in Lancaster County, cyclists should take the lane. Motorists may have to spend a few extra seconds getting through the roundabout, but it is worth it to ensure everyone’s safety. To make left-hand turns on a two-way street, Mullineaux said that he gets close to the double yellow lines as soon as it is safe

to do so and signals a turn. “If a car comes up behind me (and also plans to turn), they have to wait for me, he remarked. Bicycle lanes are a prominent feature on some Lancaster city streets. On Walnut Street, most of the bike lane is against the sidewalk and protected from the left lane of traffic by a row of parking spaces. Anyone seated on the left side of parked vehicles must look to the lane behind their vehicle to ensure they do not open their doors into a cyclist’s path. Mullineaux shared that driver’s education courses are now teaching the Dutch Reach to open doors. Popularized by the Netherlands, where bicycles outnumber residents, the Dutch Reach is so named because a seated individual crosses their body with their opposite hand to open their car door. Doing so turns the individual’s body so it is more likely they see the lane toward the rear of the vehicle and thus spot any approaching cyclists.

Livestock Expo from pg 1 buyers who choose to send their purchases to market, and butcher shops are lined up for those who would like to keep the meat or donate it to a local food bank. “We are very thankful for the businesses that have stepped up, Jevin said, adding that more than 50 have contributed to the production of the expo. That has made it possible to purchase insurance, pay judges, and create prizes. Additional sponsorships are available, and businesses are welcome to participate in the auction. For sponsorship information, readers may email Greg Musser at oldlineyouthexpo@gmail.com. Does Jevin see the expo becoming an annual event? “Oh,

I hope not, he said. Old Line Youth Livestock Expo has received its official nonprofit status, and Jevin hopes to keep the organization going, but not in place of local fairs. This year’s event is just to meet an immediate need. “I like helping the kids out, and I want events for the kids. If ever there’s a tough time, we can do fundraisers to help. We can possibly provide seed money for projects, he said. “If we get more money, we will give more money out. It’ll go back to the kids. For more information about the Old Line Youth Livestock Ex po, readers may visit www.facebook.com/OldLine YouthExpo.

On rural routes, cyclists may encounter horse-drawn carriages. Bicycles are almost always faster, although Mullineaux said he has been known to draft behind a buggy in the presence of a tailwind. To safely pass a horsedrawn vehicle, cyclists may ride close to the center line, making sure no drivers are coming toward them. Then, once they are well past the horse, riders may return to their original position on the road. “I sometimes wave (when passing), especially if there are kids in the back, Mullineaux said. He offered a word of caution about sharing the road with horse-drawn conveyances, noting, “If you’re not paying attention, it’s easy to come upon a buggy unawares. The Lancaster Bicycle Club offers educational resources and training on bike safety. “Always ride with traffic. Always, Mullineaux stressed. Pedestrians walk against traffic because they can quickly move to the side of the road when encountering oncoming vehicles. “If you’re riding a bicycle, you don’t have time to get over when you see a car coming toward you, Mullineaux said. When Mullineaux learned to ride on the road, he was taught to put his wheels on the white fog line or stay as far to the edge of the road surface in the absence of the line. However, he later learned that doing so makes cyclists less visible to automobile drivers, it makes it tempting for drivers to try to squeeze by a bicycle, and there is nowhere to go if an animal runs in front of the bike or the road contains an obstacle. “I like the shoulder, but if you don’t have a shoulder to ride on, the next safest place is to have your wheels in the same place as the right-hand tires of an automobile, Mullineaux said. “(That

This year, however, because of the coronavirus pandemic, the event has been scaled down and will be held virtually from Tuesday, Sept. 1, through Tuesday, Sept. 15. “This is our 26th year, and we’ve held it in different places over the years because it has grown exponentially,” said Coco Minardi, donor relations manager. “The first auction we had was in an outdoor area at a fire company. We made $1,800. Last year we raised $877,000. It is the backbone of our fundraising operation here at hospice.” Items featured at the auction are donated by the community. “Typically, we will start collecting auction items the day after the auction for the following year,” Minardi explained. “We have a wonderful generous sponsor who has a warehouse space and they donate that. Sometimes we get high-end items like jewelry and original artwork, and those are stored in a secure location at hospice.”

Hours: Mon.-Fri. 8-7; Sat. 8-4

A variety of items, including quilts, jewelry and sports memorabilia, will be offered as part of a Hospice & Community Care virtual auction to be held from Sept. 1 through 15.

Discussions about the fate of the 2020 auction began in March soon after the stay-athome order was issued. “ We went out to a remote working location on March 17 and we talked about this incessantly from that time until (now),” said Minardi. “We raise nearly $1 million, so it was not an easy decision to make. People have been coming for years and we did not want to give up on that.” On June 10, the decision was made to hold the auction virtually. This year, the auction will feature about 1,000 items. “We will auction off higher-end items quilts, artwork, jewelry, vacation getaways, gift baskets and sports memorabilia,” Minardi said. “We are in the process of photographing those items and building the website.” As part of the process, people will be able to visit the website, click on the items they are interested in and then bid on them. “People will (have time) to peruse and get comfortable with this format. Some are digitally native, but we tend to serve an older population and we want to give them time to warm up (to the process),” she said. “We will have a mailing that has step-by-step instructions.” People will be simultaneously bidding online. “You will get a notification that you have been outbid and you will have the option to bid again,” said

Minardi. “All you do is click a button. You don’t have to go back in and register. You just say ‘yes’ or ‘no.’” The auction will close on Sept. 15. and whoever has the highest bid will win the item. “We will notify the winners on Sept. 16 if they won or lost the items,” Minardi said, noting that people will be asked to pick up their items at HCC in Lancaster. New items, quilts and sports memorabilia donations are being accepted at Hospice & Community Care, 685 Good Drive, Lancaster, by appointment only. Readers may call the Development Office at 717295-3900 to schedule a dropoff appointment. All proceeds from the virtual auction and donations from corporate sponsors will benefit HCC, a nonprofit hospice provider serving patients and families at end of life since 1980. In 2019, the organization provided hospice, palliative and supportive care for nearly 7,000 patients and families. Nearly 9,000 adults, teenagers and children received grief support from the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss. Currently, the center’s support programs are being held virtually. Readers may visit www.hospicecommunity.org for more information. For more information about the auction, readers may visit www.LaborDayAuction.org or call 717-295-3900.

Mount Hope Prepares For 40th Faire Season staff training. A “Safety Care” booklet defining the safety protocols will be posted at www.parenfaire.com to help guests prepare for their visit. With capacity restrictions limiting daily attendance to a fraction of recent audiences, guests entering the front gates to this unique season will enjoy an experience similar to those of the early Faire years. Attendance will be set to the mandate to encourage social distancing and provide a safe experience for everyone. All tickets for the 2020 Faire season must be purchased in advance and will be for specific dates. No day-of gate tickets will be sold. Patrons who previously

purchased 2020 Faire tickets must exchange them for the date-specific tickets through the designated box office form. The Faire will continue its dogfriendly status throughout the season with a special dog ticket available for advance purchase following receipt of necessary online forms and waivers. As always, service dogs, as defined by the ADA, are welcome without advance arrangements. To best prepare for the approaching Faire season and, under the governor’s new directives of July 16, it is necessary to cancel the 2020 dates for Flavorfest, the PA Brewer’s Festival and Celtic Fling. Wineries, breweries, craft ven-

dors and performers are unable to participate because of restrictions prohibiting sampling, lack of staff and product, and the inability to reach the festival site due to travel restrictions. Guests who purchased or exchanged tickets for the canceled events can request a refund or an exchange of their event tickets for a 2020 date-specific Faire reservation ticket at w w w. p a r e n f a i r e . c o m / b u y tickets.html. The deadline for requests is Monday, Aug. 31. Mount Hope Estate & Winery, home of the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, is located on Route 72, a half-mile south of Pennsylvania Turnpike Exit 266.

Schreiber Plans Softball Weekend has been lowered to $300 per team. The fundraising minimum for the marathon is remaining at $300 per team. There will be a men’s division and a co-ed division (five vs. five, following ASA rules) for the tournament. Each player must sign a waiver to play. For more information and the waiver or to register, readers may visit www.schreiber pediatric.org and look under

Special Events. Prizes will be given to individual players who reach the prize fundraising levels. Schreiber has received a matching grant from the Stabler Foundation. For the next year, every donation that is given to Schreiber will be doubled, up to $250,000. Every dollar a team raises for the Softball Weekend will be matched by the Stabler Foundation.

Inns, bed-and-breakfasts and boutique hotels across the country have recently launched an “Inn to Inn virtual garden tour. Forty-two inns have pulled together to create a set of e-books that can be downloaded for free inspiration, a virtual pick-me-up or an in-person discount. Arranged as a trio and dividing the participating inns into three regions, each book tells the story of the various gardens with hundreds of links to visuals and discounts. The regions include Northeast; Southern; and West, Midwest and Abroad, which includes Canada and Italy. A list local of properties participating in the Inn to Inn garden tour in the Northeast region are Wild Wisteria Bed and Breakfast,

The most recent and largest funders are the Lancaster County Housing and Redevelopment Authority, the City of Lancaster, and the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act of 2020. To donate to the program, readers may visit www.tabornet.org.

Baby boomers preparing for the future, caregivers considering alternatives for loved ones, and seniors who want to be aware of their living and care options are invited to take part in the 50plus Living virtual open house, which will be held online from Saturday, Aug. 15, through Monday, Aug. 31, at www.50pluslivingvirtualopen house.com. Participation in the virtual open house is free. Due to COVID-19 concerns, some 50-plus living campuses and agencies are not permitted to participate in live events, and some potential residents and clients are fearful of venturing out. Hosted by OLP Events, the 50plus Living virtual open house will enable interested individuals to virtually visit mature living communities and service providers online from the comfort of their home or office.

Consumers considering their housing options will be able to browse the virtual open house, which showcases local housing, home care, and hospice organizations. Prospective residents and community and agency representatives from all over central Pennsylvania can log in and out of the event at will to share information and interact virtually. Throughout the 17-day online event, guests can learn about living and care options, connect with multiple living communities or care providers, view videos and/or photos of campuses, ask questions and have them answered on a personal basis, gain knowledge in order to make informed decisions, and make an appointment for an in-person tour when convenient. For more information on the 50plus Living virtual open house, readers may contact OLP Events at 717-285-1350.

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted economic and housing security in the past few months, but help is available through the Eviction Prevention Network (EPN). EPN is made up of 13 community benefit organizations throughout Lancaster County and will serve the entirety of Lancaster city and the county. It will aid households that are at risk of losing their homes through eviction due to changes in income due to COVID-19. Both renters and landlords can participate in the program, with a primary focus on households below 80% of the area median income, which is $63,600 annually. To start the process of getting help, households can call 2-1-1 and be assessed for eligibility. Eligible households can then partici-

The collaboration between WellSpan and Capital BlueCross brings together the payer and the provider by making data that is typically available to a provider also available to the payer to enable better clinical collaboration of the patient’s care needs. A new report from the BlueCross BlueShield Association found a greater number of women are entering pregnancy with pre-existing conditions, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity. The report noted the number of women experiencing both pregnancy and childbirth complications increased by 31.5% from 2014 to 2018. Capital BlueCross and WellSpan Health recently announced a collaboration that gives pregnant women access to a convenient remote-monitoring application for prenatal care, which are designed to improve outcomes for mothers and babies. The organizations are offering expectant mothers who are WellSpan patients and Capital BlueCross members access to Babyscripts, a mobile app that allows them to have access to crucial prenatal health information throughout pregnancy through weekly tasks, resources, and tracking. The program allows expectant mothers to share health data, such as weight and blood pressure, with doctors and advanced practice providers in real time through internet-connected devices provided to the patient. Using this service, WellSpan providers can quickly and remotely identify warning signs, such as critical changes in blood pressure, that indicate the mother and the baby may

Coin Auction Will Help Support MCC The Pennsylvania Relief Sale, which supports the work of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), is an institution in the state. Held yearly at the Pennsylvania Farm Show building in Harrisburg, the event has been known to feature close to 400 handcrafted quilts, wall hangings, and comforters, along with opportunities to shop for handmade items and gifts and to bid on unique items during the Country Auction, Silent Auction, and Children’s Auction. The event is also known for homemade food and family-friendly activities. This year, however, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the auction was canceled. Steven Stoltzfus of Leola, who has long been involved with the relief sale, along with a group of volunteers wanted to help make up for some of the funds lost due to the cancellation. “We’re holding just the coin auction, reported Stoltzfus. A variety of donated coins have been gathered to be sold at an auction that will be both live and online at the same time. The live auction will be held at the Bareville Fire Hall, 211 E. Main St., Leola, on Friday, Aug. 14, beginning at 5 p.m. At the same time, the auction will be held online through https://hibid.com. The auction preview will be held beginning at 4 p.m. The complexities of handling online bidding and live bidding

simultaneously will be addressed by having two auctioneers working in conjunction with each other. “The way this works, there will be an auctioneer bid calling with people in the audience, and, in addition, there will be a clerk sitting nearby with the computer, explained Stoltzfus. Pre-bids may be placed online, with lots closing live at 5 p.m. “If someone puts in a pre-bid, that is the starting bid. When we are auctioning a particular lot live, a person can be on the computer to enter live bids. Both internet bids and floor bids will be announced. “The clerk will report bids coming in by computer to the live auctioneer, said Stoltzfus, who noted that the bidding link will be posted at https://pareliefsale.org. Lead coins in the auction will be a 1904 $2.50 gold piece, a 1997 American Eagle $5 gold coin, a one-tenth ounce gold piece, and a one-quarter ounce gold piece. A 10-ounce silver bar and an 1884-CC Morgan dollar will be sold, as will a 1925 Stone Mountain half dollar and 1923 Monroe/Adams centennial half dollar. An 1866 three-cent piece will go up for bids as well. “We will also have a nice selection of 2013 and 2020 Silver Eagles, said Stoltzfus. In addition to the coin auction, a food fundraiser will be held at the Bareville Fire Company on Aug. 14, beginning at 4 p.m. It will include wings, french fries, and a beverage sold as a

Central Pennsylvania Food Bank Receives Grant The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank announced on July 20 that it is receiving a donation of $125,000 from Sheetz For the Kidz, a charitable organization driven by the employees of Sheetz Inc. to help provide hunger relief to children in 27 counties throughout central Pennsylvania through the food bank’s youth programs. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank helps to provide more than 2.5 million meals annually to children in need through its network of local agency partners, including food pantries, soup kitchens and meal programs. Since March, demand for the food bank’s services has increased more than 40% as families face financial uncertainty in the wake of the COVID19 crisis. In addition, many children throughout central Pennsylvania receive free or reducedprice lunches and breakfasts during the school year. With schools shut down since March due to COVID-19, many children have lost access to these meals. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, a member of the Feeding America network, is one of 27 food banks to receive this funding from Sheetz For the Kidz. The grant will enable the food bank to continue to provide healthy, nutritious meals to children in need. Since the start of the COVID19 crisis in March, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has distributed more than 28 million pounds of food to those in need in the 27 counties it serves. It is currently serving more than 175,000 individuals per month, including children, seniors and veterans. That is an increase from the 135,000 per month who relied on the food bank prior to March. As a regional convenience store, Sheetz is committed to helping to fight childhood hunger in the communities in which it resides. Through its program Madeto-Share, Sheetz is rescuing food from its 600 stores and donating it to Feeding America member food banks located in its six-state footprint. To learn more about the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, readers may visit www.central pafoodbank.org.
