Baron Elementary School kindergartner Makenna Linder fought a battle with a rare form of cancer when she was 3 years old, and now at age 6 she is battling another form of the disease. On Friday, Jan. 17, her classmates, school, and community are planning to rally around her in a tremendous show of support through a #PinkOutForMakenna. Makenna’s teacher, Julie Reed, wanted to make sure her student felt an abundance of love from her 21 classmates as she began undergoing chemotherapy treatment. Reed also wanted to find a way to support Makenna’s family - which includes parents Matthew and Amanda and brother Bradyn, a fifth-grader through both the financial and emotional tolls of the process. In 2017, Makenna was diagnosed with a Stage II
Wilms tumor that necessitated the removal of a kidney. “Her right kidney was so enlarged that it was pushing on her left kidney, relayed Amanda. Amanda explained that once Makenna had the kidney removed, she was deemed cancer-free. Makenna underwent 18 weeks of chemotherapy treatments that were considered preventative, and she returned to Penn State Children’s Hospital for follow-up appointments every three months for the following year. “She bounced back pretty quickly, shared Amanda. “She dreaded (the check-ups) at first, but then she was healthy so it was just something she got used to. By the end of February 2019, Makenna was cleared to go six months before her next check-up. In November 2019, the doctors discovered that Makenna’s body had another rare form of cancer: rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), or as Amanda said, “We just call it rhabda. Makenna began receiving chemotherapy treatments See Makenna pg 3
A #PinkOutForMakenna will take place on Jan. 17, when students in the Manheim Central School District and everyone in the surrounding communities are invited to wear pink in a show of support for Baron Elementary School kindergartner Makenna Linder. Makenna is currently undergoing treatment for her second battle with cancer.

Each lamb will be sheared at home and at the Farm Show in addition to getting washed and blow-dried to make it look its best. “I’m very competitive, so I like the challenge of getting them ready,” said Eric. He earned Reserve Champion Market Hog at the 2017 Pennsylvania Farm Show. With Eric and Tyler being so close in age, they often end up competing in the same division - which naturally intensifies the competition. Collectively, the family has achieved a lengthy list of accolades at local fairs, including Champion Market Hog and Reserve Champion Lightweight Market Hog at the 2017 Manheim Farm Show, Reserve Champion Market Hog at the 2017 Ephrata Fair, Reserve Champion Market Hog at the 2017 Elizabethtown Fair, and Grand Champion Market Hog at the 2016 Elizabethtown Fair. “It’s fun showing the animals,” remarked Tyler. “You work a while, and you get to show what you accomplished. Cameron St., Harrisburg. Admission is free; however, there is a parking fee in all Farm Show Complex-operated lots. Among the more than 6,000 animals that will be part of this year’s Farm Show are several lambs, pigs, and rabbits that have been raised and cared for by the Zimmerman brothers at the family’s farmette in rural Manheim. Tyler, 16, and Eric, 15 - now in their sixth and fifth years, respectively, of participating in the statewide competition will each be entering one lamb and one pig. Ten-year-old Drew will enter a lamb and a pig, along with three rabbits. Transporting all of those animals to the Farm Show Complex in time for their competitions will take three trips. “It’s going to be an all-nighter,” said the boys’ mother, Tracy Zimmerman, with a laugh. But that driving time, plus all of the unseen effort leading up to it, is more than worth it for Tracy and her husband, Ryan Zimmerman, who hope to develop and instill a lifelong hard work ethic in their sons through projects like this. “It teaches them responsibility,” noted Ryan. “And commitment and follow-through,” added Tracy. Ryan and Tracy met in FFA when they were attending Manheim Central High School (MCHS). Now Tyler and Eric are involved in FFA at MCHS, and all three boys participate in 4-H. The brothers wake up early every morning to feed and tend to their animals and return in the evening to make sure each animal has fresh water and food. Eric explained that exercising the animals is another important part of the routine to build muscle and to prepare for the main event. “That way they aren’t as anxious in the show,” noted Eric. In addition to being judged for livestock show class awards at the Farm Show, each contestant is judged on showmanship. Eric, Tyler, and Drew spend hours guiding the animals at home to ensure the animals are ready for the show ring. They practice in various environments and employ tactics like playing a radio so that the animals are not as overwhelmed by all the noise that will sur-

STACEY W. BETTS Manheim Central High School boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will wear pink shirts at one of their respective January games, and Reed said plans are in the works to hopefully have spectators participate in pink outs for Makenna at those games, too. Pink T-shirts printed with the hashtag #PinkOutForMakenna are for sale at Prussian Street Arcade, 49 N. Main St., Manheim. Reed, Makenna, and Amanda have been making bright pink earrings and poofy JoJo bows, which will also be available for purchase at Prussian Street Arcade. Proceeds from the sales of shirts, earrings, and bows will support the Linder family. “When Makenna got sick, we found out that a common ground we have is crafts. She and her mom and grandma love to craft, and so do I,” shared Reed. Picking out materials for the earrings and bows provides a welcome distraction for Makenna as she is undergoing treatment. Reed even relayed a story of how when she was talking to Makenna after one of her rounds of treatment, she said, “Yup, I feel better. It’s See Makenna pg 4

Makenna from pg 1 on Dec. 10 that will continue for 42 weeks. Knowing Makenna loves the color pink, Reed decided to orchestrate a “Pink Out” in her classroom, where each of the students would wear pink on the same day to visibly show Makenna that they are standing with her. The concept mimics the traditional White Out that occurs at a Penn State football game each season, when every spectator dresses in white. “As soon as we found out Makenna was sick again, we thought it would be neat to do something special for her,” shared Reed. “The Pink Out for Makenna started out as just something for our classroom, but then it got approved to be K-12, and from there we started reaching out to local businesses and it just grew.” The entire community is invited to rally around Makenna and her family on Jan. 17 by wearing pink. Students in the Manheim Central School District are encouraged to wear pink, and Makenna will be Zoomconferenced in for a school assembly that day to see the wave of pink firsthand. Members of the Manheim Borough Police Department will also be pinking out and plan to deputize Makenna. Players on the

Jessica Kinsey, a board member with GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster, wants families with children who have Down syndrome and other disabilities to know that a support system is available. “I would have loved to have had this once we had our prenatal diagnosis,” said Kinsey. “We want to educate (the community by providing) more information (for families).” A huge step in raising awareness of the positive impact people with Down syndrome and other disabilities can have will take place on Saturday, Jan. 11, when GiGi’s Playhouse, a Down Syndrome Achievement Center, will open at 2503 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. An open house to celebrate the grand opening will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Although the open house is a drop-in event, Jen Voshell, who is also a board member, said that specific activities are planned. Self-guided tours of the facility, which includes a large room, two small rooms, a kitchen, and a family room, will be available from 1 to 2 p.m. At 2 p.m., Nancy Gianni, who founded GiGi’s Playhouse in 2002 and named it for her daughter GiGi, will speak, as will GiGi’s Playhouse president Kim King. “Some of our families will talk about what GiGi’s Lancaster means to them,” said Voshell. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be
held, and refreshments will be served. Gianni, who founded GiGi’s in Chicago, was inspired to start the program after holding a support group meeting for families of children with Down syndrome in a room made available in a local hospital. “She took it upon herself to create GiGi’s Playhouse,” said Voshell. “She became well known and was able to help other communities open their own playhouses.” GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster is the 47th playhouse to open in the United States. “GiGi’s differs because everything we offer is free to families,” said Kinsey, who listed therapeutic services, such as speech, physical, occupational, and social services among the playhouse’s offerings. “All family members are welcome and encouraged to stay,” she stated, adding, “It’s not therapy just for our individuals with Down syndrome, it’s (a model) for what you can do in-home.” Kinsey also noted that GiGi’s Playhouse is inclusive. “It’s not just for individuals with Down syndrome,” she said. Kinsey noted that support is available for individuals of all ages. “GiGi’s is a lifetime commitment to families. We help from prenatal diagnosis through adulthood,” she explained. “There will be fitness classes,” stated Kinsey. The center hopes to offer young

This year’s Lancaster Collaboration of Night to Shine will be held from 5:45 to 10 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, in Olympic Hall at Spooky Nook Sports, while hundreds of other events are hosted simultaneously by volunteers at sites around the world. People age 14 and older with special needs are invited to attend and may register at www.gbclancaster.org/night2shine by Sunday, Jan. 26. Admission is free. The Lancaster Collaboration originally hosted Night to Shine at Grace Baptist Church of Lancaster before relocating to Manheim Brethren in Christ Church last year. jecting 370 guests for 2020. Donations are still needed to support Night to Shine. “One hundred dollars covers one guest and their buddy, plus all of the activities that we offer,” Ketchum said. Guests will be greeted by friendly paparazzi - ranging from photographers to local mascots - surrounding a red carpet entrance. Formal doormen will direct attendees to a registration area where they will meet a volunteer buddy whom they will be paired with for the evening. Hair and makeup and shoe shining services will be offered, too. Following a seated formal dinner, guests will have the chance to dance, sing karaoke on stage, pose in a photo booth, play cornhole, win door prizes, get treats from the ice cream parlor and coffee station, and take limousine rides complete with sparkling cider and other goodies to add to the thrill. Upon their return to the building, guests will receive a crown and sash as their name is announced on the red carpet. All guests will receive a printed photo of themselves on the red carpet and a goodie bag of snacks and other fun items donated by local businesses. A parent and caregiver respite lounge will also be provided. “The impact that it makes is tremendous. Night to Shine is so special not only

Training from pg 1 YWCA Lancaster will host the Racial Equity Institute, Part I (REI-I), formerly the Racial Justice Institute, at its offices, 110 N. Lime St., Lancaster, from Friday to Sunday, Jan. 17 to 19. This intensive two-and-a-half-day workshop represents YWCA Lancaster’s core social justice training program. It aims to give participants a common understanding of racism and related concepts. YWCA Lancaster views REI-I as a foundation for working toward dismantling institutional and systemic racism. YWCA Lancaster intends that participants leave the Racial Equity Institute experience equipped with a better understanding of the separate work, experiences, and responsibilities of people of color and white people. Workshop enrollees are introduced to a fundamental anti-racist, multicultural model that can lead to a tangible plan of action for
for the guests but for their families, too,” stated Ketchum. “Parents and caretakers get to see their child dressed up and given the royal treatment for one night. So many of the parents come up to me and the other volunteers that night in tears, thanking us for doing it.” “This is the only time that a lot of the parents will get to see their kids dressed up like this. A lot of these guests will never get to have their own wedding or go to a gala or an event that’s just for them,” continued Ketchum. “This is something showing them that we value them and God values them.” More than 550 volunteers contributed to the success of the 2019 event, and organizers are seeking volunteers to help in a number of ways for 2020. Interested individuals may learn more and sign up at www.gbclancaster.org/night2shine. Donations may also be made at that website. adults and adults a program called GiGi University to provide career training or life skills. The classes encourage education, socialization, and ways to help individuals be more independent. Four types of classes are scheduled for the next several months at GiGi’s. “Classes will consist of LMNOP, which stands for Language, Music, and Our Peeps,” said Voshell, who noted that the class, which is for children age 3 and under, will focus on developing language and social skills through play. Destination Discovery will be a class for people of all ages that focuses on social skills, physical skills, and school skills, such as colors. Fantastic Friends is a program for individuals age 18 and up. “It’s a time to hang out and build relationships,” said Voshell. GiGi Fit is a young adult exercise and healthy lifestyle class. Christine Hewitt said that GiGi’s grew out of a group called Celebrate Down Syndrome, which had been in existence in Lancaster for many years. The group decided to change the name to GiGi’s Playhouse in 2016. Since that time, the organization has been hosting galas, fundraisers, and gettogethers, such as Pancakes and Pajamas, which is held near the holidays, to raise funds to open the playhouse. More information about GiGi’s Playhouse may be found by visiting www.gigisplay house.org/lancaster or searching for “GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster” on Facebook. Tree Recycling from pg 1 County residents can participate in an environmentally friendly way to dispose of their Christmas trees by dropping them at the mulching site at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster, between dawn and dusk through Friday, Jan. 31. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags, and hardware, including nails in the trunk. The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. There is a three-tree limit per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations. There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will benefit the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the county park system. Moss, a former professor at Franklin & Marshall College and a founding member of the Lancaster Environmental Action Federation (LEAF), worked to promote the conservation of natural resources for the improvement of the environment of Lancaster County’s public parks and open spaces. In 2000, LEAF donated funds to the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation for the creation of the nursery in memory of Moss. According to park officials, residents drop off about 1,500 Christmas trees each year, which produce 22 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas, as well as many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to residents on a first-come, first-served basis after Tuesday, Jan. 7, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home. For more information about the Christmas tree mulching program, residents may call the park office at 717-2998215 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. To learn more about the Lancaster County Park System, readers may visit www.lancastercountyparks.org. Pictured on front: Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation employees grind Christmas trees into free mulch for public pickup. Trees will be accepted at the mulching site at Lancaster County Central Park through Friday, Jan. 31.
