The Great Create Seeks Crafters eeling crafty? Head out to Horst Arts, 17 N. Main St., Manheim, on Saturday, Jan. 9, for The Great Create. The event will begin at 3 p.m. “The Great Create is an arts and crafts competition,” said Jason Horst, owner of Horst Arts. “It’s a little bit like ‘The Great British Baking Show’ but with crafts.” The competition will include three rounds, which will increase in complexity. “The first round doesn’t involve a lot of skill,” Horst said, noting that he didn’t want to reveal too many details ahead of time. “It gets trickier with each round. The second round is more technically challenging. You will follow written instructions and interpret them in your own way. It’s more of a design challenge, and while you’re doing that, you’ll learn about the history of Manheim and some of its notable characters.” For the third round, participants will make something to take home.
F
“In the last round, you’ll create something beautiful that you can bring home and hang on your wall,” Horst said. “Basically, the first round is about crafting, the second round is about design, and the third round is about being artistic.” Unlike other reality competitions, no one will be eliminated during the event, but winners will be declared for each round as well as an overall winner. While this event is for individual competitors, Horst said groups or organizations can reserve times for special events like this one in the future. “This would be a lot of fun for an office party or a bridal shower,” he noted. “For this event on (Jan. 9), you’ll be competing against strangers, so it’s a great way to get to know people. It’s a fun activity and lets you get creative.” Horst held a similar event last year, but this will be first time The Great Create is being held in the business’s new location, which opened in 2020.
Museum Offers E-Learning Classes BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Like many places, Winters Heritage House Museum had to adapt to changes this past year. When the pandemic forced the site to temporarily close its doors at 47 E. High St. in Elizabethtown, it also opened an opportunity. “With nobody coming into the museum, we wanted to have a way for our staff to keep contributing to our mission, and we came up with ideas that could all be done virtually,” said Nancy Landis, museum director. Horst Arts invites crafters to compete in The Great Create, to be held Saturday, Jan. 9, at 3 p.m.
Francesco’s Pizza Has New Owners Francesco’s Pizza & Italian Restaurant, 30 S. Main St., Manheim, has been purchased by sisters Rita and Sara Amato. The Amatos’ parents emigrated to the United States from Carini, Sicily, in the 1980s. Sicily is a small island known for its culture, traditions, beaches, and food. The Amato family opened pizzerias, and Rita and Sara grew up on the love for family-crafted Italian recipes, at early ages beginning to help in the restaurants, taking orders and trying new recipes.
As young adults, the Amato sisters attended college. Rita studied Spanish education, and Sara majored in supply chain management. However, the women wanted to continue the family tradition, so after earning master’s degrees, they purchased Francesco’s Pizza. Rita
and Sara’s goal is to incorporate their passion for food, tradition, and customer service while serving the community of Manheim. Francesco’s Pizza & Italian Restaurant offers quality, authentic Italian food, with a menu that has been updated to include Amato See Francesco’s Pizza pg 2

Museum from pg 1
Nancy Landis, director of the Winters Heritage House Museum, gets assistance from Orville the lamb when teaching a lesson on how milk becomes butter.
The museum launched a series of e-learning courses with topics including crafts, recipes and science lessons. “We sat down as a staff and started brainstorming ideas of things we thought would be fun for people to do,” Landis noted. “These are all things people did to entertain themselves in the days before TV.” Topics are geared toward children but can be adapted for adults as well, she said. “ We have a lesson on scherenschnitte, which is German scissors cutting. You can download patterns and print them out,” she
explained. “We have a unit on embroidery. Kids love this. I don’t think a lot of people realize how much kids love to sew.” Other crafts include a print-and-fold Conestoga wagon and packhorse train. “Many people don’t realize how important packhorse trains were to early transportation,” Landis stated. “These lessons give people an opportunity to learn as they are being entertained.” Recipes in the e-learning series include everything from homemade ice cream to Irish shortbread. “We came up with recipes
that kids can help with,” Landis said. “Kids were definitely in our minds when we were coming up with topics. Most of the recipes are very simple, and we taste-tested everything.” History and science lessons in the series include videos that explain things like how soap was invented and what happens when oil and water mix. “We have a lesson on butter churning, which shows what happens to cream when you churn butter and the science behind what’s happening,” Landis remarked. Plans are in the works for more e-learning lessons in the next few months, she noted. In addition to the e-learning series, on its website the museum offers a virtual tour of four murals throughout Elizabethtown. Shifting to an online presence took some patience, Landis said, but it has had a silver lining. “ We had so much fun developing these lessons,” she explained. “It was a challenge for us, but it was great to do something different like this.” For more information on the e-learning series, readers may visit www.elizabeth townhistory.org/ e-learning.html.
County Certified Wildlife-Friendly The Lancaster Conservancy recently announced that Lancaster County is now a certified National Wildlife Federation (NWF) Community Wildlife Habitat. This certification shows Lancaster’s commitment to be a healthier, greener, and more wildlife-friendly county by creating wildlife habitat throughout its communities while also educating and engaging residents. The Lancaster Conservancy’s Community Wildlife Habitat initiative is a volunteer led effort that works with local property owners and organizations to encourage planting native plants, trees, and gardens that reduce stormwater runoff while providing habitat and food for wildlife and pollinators. The NWF has certified more than 568 sites, including yards, schools, businesses, community gardens, parks, and places of worship. Each of these sites provides the four basic elements that all wildlife need to thrive -
additional initiatives focused specifically on creating habitat for wildlife at schools and places of worship. Encouraging community members to create native habitat is also one of the primary goals of the Conservancy’s annual Lancaster Water Week slated to take place for its fourth year from Friday, June 4, through Saturday, June 12, 2021. Removing invasive plants, planting natives, and reimagining lawns are critical steps toward saving pollinators, cleaning the water, and enhancing livability in communities for the long term. Readers who would like to have a Community Wildlife Habitat Steward schedule a visit to assess their site may contact Ferich at lferich@lancaster conservancy.org. To learn more and get started gardening for wildlife, readers may visit www.lancaster conservancy.org/ habitat.

Linda Ferich, who spearheaded this initiative for the last three years, was recently notified that Lancaster County now has enough certified sites for the county to qualify as the first in the state of Pennsylvania with this designation. With a critical mass of certified gardens, the goal is to create corridors for wildlife to thrive. Ferich personally visited and advised well over 300 property owners over the past three years. Ferich, Allison Zechman, and Margie Hall also led Habitat Steward trainings where 40 community volunteers were taught to identify non-native and invasive plants, analyze gardens and sites, and implement other sustainable landscaping practices. Fraktur Workshop Slated Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society will offer an online workshop on the Pennsylvanian German folk art of fraktur on Saturday, Jan. 23, to 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. The workshop will guide attendees through painting a fraktur with traditional colors and designs and creating a grain-painted frame to display their work. No experience is necessary. Lynn Janelle Sommer will guide the fraktur painting segment. Fraktur is a form of storytelling using watercolor and ink that celebrates life events and usually incorporates treasured spiritual mottos, verses, or poetry. Jim King will demonstrate the grain painting process. King learned the process by restoring
antique blanket chests using traditional oil or vinegar glazes. There is a fee, and participants must also purchase a few supplies on their own before the class. After registering at http://bit.ly/ FrakturFrame, people will receive a Zoom link and a list of recommended supplies. The historical society will mail participants the design on watercolor paper as well as the frame. Any questions may be directed to Michael Bodner at operations@lmhs.org or 717-393-9745. The historical society’s vision is diverse communities connecting across boundaries by knowing and valuing their own and one another’s stories of life, faith, cultures, and histories.

Great Create from pg 1 “If you enjoy watching reality competition shows, why not try your hand at being in one?” he remarked. “There won’t be cameras, of course, but you can compete against other people and show off your skills. It’s going to be a little bit stressful for people, but that’s the fun of it. We want to hit all types of people for this, from the crafter to the person who is more precise with their art to those who truly have artistic flair. Some will excel, some will struggle, but everyone will have fun.” To register for The Great Create, readers may visit https://horstarts.com/events /the-great-create/.
