Lifecycles Riders To Embark On Trans Am Challenge Ride Library Posts Program Slate
By Chelsea Peifer
This summer, six young men from Lancaster County - ranging in age from 15 to 19 - will be flying to the West Coast to take on a 3,820-mile, 63-day bicycle ride from Oregon to Maine. The Trans Am Extreme Challenge Ride is a new undertaking for each of the riders and for Lifecycles, a nonprofit mentoring program committed to building young men and women of character through bicycling adventures. Retired United States Air Force Col. Lee DeRemer developed the vision for Lifecycles after seeing a transformation of sorts in his nephews after they had conquered a bicycle trip through Montana and Wyoming together. DeRemer had planned that adventure after his nephews lost their father to cancer as a way to spend time together and provide some of the male leadership they were See Lifecycles pg 3

LBC To Present “Ruth” Musical Building Resilience Through Trauma-Informed Practices By Ann Mead Ash
When David Felty, executive producer, considered bringing the Sight and Sound Theatres original production of “Ruth” to the Lancaster Bible College (LBC) stage, he felt the show, based on one of only two books of the Bible dedicated to the story of a woman, should have a female perspective. With that in mind, he brought in Heather Grayberg to direct and choreograph, along with an allfemale creative team that includes Leslie Talley and Gabrielle Hines as assistant directors, Kendra Bigley as music director, Katie Moser as set designer, and women overseeing costumes and props. See “Ruth” pg 2

Preparing for their roles in the Lancaster Bible College production of “Ruth” are (from left) Kayla Valesquez, understudy for the role of Naomi; Samantha Ingram, who will play Naomi; and Delaney Bigley, who is alternating with Kristin Hurdleston in the role of Ruth. The show will play in the college’s Good Shepherd Chapel on weekends from Jan. 24 through Feb. 2.
The About Child Trauma (ACT) Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Mount Joy, offers traumainformed training to organizations and professionals with the goal of helping children to heal from the effects of early trauma. Executive director Lark Eshleman, MLS, MS, Ph.D., who specializes in the field of trauma and attachment, wants people to know that they can all have a hand in fostering resilience - the antidote to child trauma. “What we know is that relationships are key, and one caring adult can change a person’s life,” stated Eshleman. “That person doesn’t need to live with them but needs to be consistent and safe. To be that person for a child in need is a gift beyond measure.” See ACT pg 4
Lark Eshleman serves as executive director of the About Child Trauma Foundation and is one of several professionals in the organization who is available to present Pennsylvania Department of Educationapproved Act 48 trauma-informed courses that cover topics including emotional trauma, complex trauma, trauma and sensory processing disorder, and mindfulness.

The trailer for the film “LIKE - A Documentary About the Impact of Social Media on Our Lives and the Effects of Technology on the Brain” ends with the daunting question, “Are you using technology or is it using you?” Girls on the Run (GOTR) of LancasterLebanon hopes to start a conversation around that question when the organization presents the film on Friday, Jan. 31, at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The event is free to members of the public age 10 and up. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and the film will be shown at 7 p.m. Sarah Yohe, development director with GOTR, said that the subject of the film is especially pertinent. “We know that technology is a really relevant topic for our girls and our entire community,” said Yohe. “This documentary really digs
into the addiction piece of technology. It talks about how we spend a lot of time connected and feeling more disconnected than ever.” GOTR programs combine running with an interactive curriculum designed to promote good choices for a lifetime of selfrespect and healthy living. Yohe noted that the face-to-face time is important in the current cultural environment. “We get our girls together twice a week for 10 weeks to make real live personal connections,” she said. The curriculum teaches life skills and strategies to help build confidence and character. A 2016 study found that a majority of the girls who completed the program learned to resolve conflict, help others, and manage emotions. To enhance the discussion, the screening will be followed by a panel discussion and the opportunity for the audience to ask questions. The panel will consist of a child psychologist, a Millersville University communications major, a technology expert, a local pediatrician, and a local school administrator. GOTR board members Katie Sandoe
and pay attention to ways that they disconnect from technology. “We will give them tips on how to scale back technology usage, and we will ask them to start using technology for good (reasons and purposes),” said Yohe. Advice may include turning off notifications or changing a screen to grayscale. There is no charge to attend the event, but those who would like to see the film are asked to register by visiting www.eventbrite.com and searching for “LIKE” in Lancaster. Readers who wish to learn more about GOTR Lancaster-Lebanon may visit www.gotrlancaster.org.
and Robin Sarrat will serve as moderators. The presentation will not end with the panel discussion, however. GOTR has partnered with the Lancaster County Community Foundation on the event, and May Renner of the foundation will close the evening with a visioning exercise. The film trailer features a number of people, many of them young women, talking about their connection to technology. One admits to having an unhealthy relationship with her phone, while another states that her parents say she is addicted to her phone. Evidence that technology usage affects the same parts of the brain that respond when a person falls in love is presented. “The documentary discusses how much of our time we spend connected to a device,” said Yohe, who noted that calls to action for audience members will be part of the discussion. “We would like them to walk away continuing the conversation,” said Yohe, who added that presenters will suggest that those who viewed the film work to limit screen time

than the one at Sight and Sound. “We have to make the show attainable, so the text and staging can be tricky as far as conveying the story, but I think it will feel more intimate,” said Grayberg. “Theater is a vehicle for us to feel emotions and learn things and discover
things within ourselves,” noted Grayberg. To be sure “Ruth” fills these roles for the audience, Grayberg is focusing on the heart of the tale. “This bond between these two women is beautiful,” she said. “We are stripping the story See “Ruth” pg 3

“Ruth” will be staged on Fridays, Jan. 24 and 31, at 7 p.m.; on Saturdays, Jan. 25 and Feb. 1, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and on Sundays, Jan. 26 and Feb. 2, at 2 p.m. All shows will be held in the Good Shepherd Chapel at LBC, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster. Kristin Hurdleston and Delaney Bigley are double cast in the titular role, and Ruth’s mother-in-law, Naomi, is played by Samantha Ingram. The pair find themselves poor widows when Naomi’s husband, Elimelech, played by Richard
Thomas, dies and her sons are killed. With only faith in God and each other, Naomi and Ruth set off on a journey that leads to a lesson about finding God’s plans when one’s own have failed. But “Ruth” is also a love story about the kinsman Boaz, played by Bryson Buffington, who rescues the women from their plight when he falls in love with the title character. Brianna Brady will serve as the narrator, an otherworldly being who will at one point interact with the characters. While Grayberg is excited about the production, being the first to stage the show outside Sight and Sound comes with challenges. “It feels like we are workshopping a brand-new show,” she said, noting that the stage at the Good Shepherd Chapel is somewhat smaller

The ride will provide ample opportunity for each of the boys to apply Lifecycles’ motto: “Do hard things.” The riders will set out from Sunset Beach, Ore., in June and finish out in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Four adult riders will accompany the youths, and a support and gear (SAG) van driven by two adults will follow the group. Continental breakfasts, lunches prepared by the SAG volunteers, and dinners at restaurants will fuel the riders as they tackle approximately 150,000 feet of climbing - a total equivalent to more than five times the height of Mount Everest. So it is with good reason that when Monny was asked what he believes the most challenging part of the trip will be, he responded, “The hills. I’m not looking forward to the hills.”

recording of the show and wrote the score for a 26-piece orchestra. Songs that Grayberg believes will stand out include “I Will Go Where You Go,” and “By My Side,” which are sung by Ruth and Naomi together. She also pointed to a solo by Boaz called “Taking Your Chances.” As a choreographer, Grayberg said

As she deals with the challenges of bringing a big show to a smaller stage, Grayberg wants audiences to focus on the message of the show. “I hope audiences see this as a story of redemption and faithfulness and see that God works things out for good,” she said. now missing in their lives. The joy and growth that trip yielded was something DeRemer believed could be replicated on a larger scale. Today, volunteers from Lifecycles lead weekly rides for teenage boys in Landisville, Marietta, and New Holland and for girls in Lititz. More than 80 riders participated in the 2019 season, and more than 160 riders have been a part of Lifecycles since the program began in 2015. A free meal is served, and bicycles, helmets, and shirts are supplied for all participants. Interested individuals are encouraged to sign up ahead of time at www.lifecyclesteam.org if they would like to join a ride. Walk-ins are welcome too. Additionally, Lifecycles organizes annual summer challenge rides for participants. The inaugural challenge ride consisted of nine teenagers and seven adult guides pedaling 290 miles to Niagara Falls. As the organization has grown, so have the challenges, with different trips being planned for riders of various ability levels.

Training for the Trans Am ride will not only include lots of bicycling for the boys but weekly gym nights led by a personal trainer to cover cross-training. Micah’s mom, Melinda Clark, said that she is grateful for the avenue that Lifecycles has already provided to reinforce positive character traits and for the opportunity this trip will give to the boys to enhance decision-making and risk assessment skills. Albert Vega, AJ’s father and the leader of the New Holland Lifecycles site, is looking forward to hearing his son’s stories. “We have a lot of great conversations after our rides just in the local area,” said Albert. “I’m excited for him to see the country from a different perspective.” Each participant has been tasked with raising $2,000 of the approximately $6,000 per person trip cost to cover food, lodging, and travel expenses. Postal Service Shares ACT from pg 1 Snow Removal Tips Winter is in full swing in Pennsylvania, accompanied by freezing temperatures, snow, and ice. The U.S. Postal Service asks customers to help letter carriers deliver mail safely by clearing snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs, porches, street approach, and mailboxes. Delivery service may be delayed or curtailed whenever streets or walkways present hazardous conditions for letter carriers or when snow is plowed against mailboxes. Delivery of curtailed mail will be attempted the next delivery day. To do their part to keep letter carriers safe and to help them continue to offer consistent delivery service, customers should heed the following tips: All customers should keep their mailbox or mail slot free of ice and snow. This includes the approach to and exit from the area, as well as sufficient space on both sides of curbside mailboxes. Customers receiving door delivery should ensure their sidewalks, steps, and porches are clear.
Customers receiving curbside or rural delivery should remove snow piles, such as those left by snow plows, to keep access to their mailboxes clear for letter carriers. Customers should keep in mind that painted porches and steps are particularly hazardous. While salting or rubber-backed mats help make them less slippery, customers should still clear the snow before a letter carrier arrives with the mail. In hazardous situations when delivery is suspended, customers should contact local postal officials to discuss ways to eliminate the hazard. Residents and businesses with blue collection boxes near their property are asked to keep them clear of snow and ice as well. According to the U.S. Postal Service, slips, trips, and falls are the leading cause of accidents among letter carriers. In addition to endangering the safety of the carrier, injuries to a letter carrier - or any visitor to a home - can result in costly liabilities to homeowners.
According to Eshleman, a 1998 study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) demonstrated how traumatic childhood events can be the root cause of many social, emotional, and cognitive impairments that contribute to an increase in high-risk health behaviors, chronic health conditions, emotional and behavioral dysfunction, and early death. Examples of ACEs are physical, emotional, or sexual abuse; physical or emotional neglect; and forms of household dysfunction such as divorce, mental illness, substance abuse, a parent being treated violently, and having an incarcerated relative. “The more adverse childhood experiences you have, the more in danger of certain physical, psychological, emotional, and behavioral issues (you are),” summarized Eshleman. In 2019, trauma-informed education became mandatory for staff at all Pennsylvania public schools with the passing of Senate Bill 144. The new legislation acknowledged that ACEs have a potentially long-term effect on a child’s functioning and well-being and implemented requisite training to help school board members, administrators, and faculty members to identify the signs
and symptoms of trauma in students. Eshleman, who was named to the state’s Trauma Informed Practices in Schools Workgroup, and other professionals from the ACT Foundation lead workshops for educators, parents, representatives of professional agencies, and others who are interested. In the fall of 2019, Eshleman led a trauma-informed training for the non-teaching staff at Donegal School District, and plans are underway for a series of interactive parenting workshops in February at the Milanof-Schock Library in Mount Joy. “Behaviors are often not what they seem,” stated Eshleman, who has worked as a children’s librarian, school psychologist, and principal and has served overseas with children traumatized in the war in the Balkans. Eshleman explained that implementing a trauma-informed approach as an educator or other person who works with children and youths involves asking questions about the root cause of an individual’s behavior. Depending on the answer, more questions must be asked to determine how the adult can best work with the child to address the behavior. Eshleman encourages adults to stay positive and openminded in their interactions with others. Anyone interested in partnering with the ACT Foundation or in hosting one of the organization’s courses is welcome to See ACT pg 5

slipping away, but the Barons dug deep, tied the score and found a way to get the win. “There were no excuses, just get it done,” Fisher said. “That’s what we hope to continue for the rest of the season. In my five years coaching, this is the most team-oriented team I’ve had.” Central has only had three home games this year, but home or away, the Barons have played competitively and kept the score close in most games. Fisher said he needed some of the younger guys on the team to step up with scoring. They came together faster than he thought, winning that fourth game of the year against Warwick. The Barons led 12-8 after the first quarter and 21-20 at halftime. Tied at 35-35 after three quarters, the Trojans outscored Manheim 18-6 in the final frame to secure a 53-41 victory. Central did well in the 200 medley relay, taking first with a 2:02.84. The team consisted of Ethan Harner, Finn Schmidhuber, Wyatt Kupres and Max Gehman, who also won the 500 free (22:71). Barons’ swim coach Heather Fittery said Faulhaber, Redcay and Kaylin Jury had a good meet for the girls and Gehman, Kupres and Colton Faulhaber stood out for the boys. “The relays were both close, but we were able to pull them both out with good times,” Fittery said. Rollers Tournament Dec. 21 at Leisure Lanes. Because of family commitments, Sides was missing a few varsity bowlers and called up two junior varsity players in Catey Sides, a junior and the coach’s daughter, and Josh Shaw, a sophomore. Sides rolled a 199 and Shaw a 168. Henry was the top Baron bowler at the tourney with a 607 triple. Manheim finished about 20th, Sides said, and did not advance in the tournament that had about 44 teams. Overall he said his squad performed well. WRESTLING Billy Chamberlain couldn’t have asked for a better start to his season. The Manheim coach has a 4-0 record - wins against Cedar Crest, Lebanon, Ephrata and Cocalico and a tournament title - despite having eight freshman or sophomores in the starting lineup. “We’re extremely young,” said
Chamberlain, whose squad won the Donegal tournament Dec. 20 by one point over Cocalico. “I can see growth in the room every day. It is nice to see the kids coming along.” On Thursday, Jan. 2 the Barons cruised to a 72-25 triumph over the Mountaineers in Ephrata. There were six forfeits by Ephrata, so the match went fast - like 24 minutes. The Barons made quick work of the Mounts in the seven matches that did take place. Brett Barbush, Ryland Fittery, Will Betancourt and Dakoda Thomas all earned falls. Brandon Kheuangthirath pinned a wrestler who beat him the last two years. “He’s a senior who is wrestling tough,” Chamberlain said. “It is really nice to see him beat a kid who beat him in the past. It’s his senior year and things are starting to click for him.” The Barons earned a big win against Cocalico on Saturday, Jan. 4, beating the Eagles 42-36. Senior Maliki Rivera sealed the match with his win at 170 pounds. Highlights included Bryce Dombach gaining a pin at 152 pounds in his first varsity match of the year. Manheim also got falls from Braxton Keiffer (106) and Conner Zeamer (145). In the Donegal Holiday Tournament Championship, 12 Baron wrestlers took places. Keiffer and Betancourt won titles at 106 and 132, respectively. Zeamer and Barbush were runners-up. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL With at least four strong ball handlers, outside shooters and an inside presence, the Barons are built for a long post season run. Their winning formula was on display Friday, Jan. 3 in a key home game against Lampeter-Strasburg. The Barons used their quickness to take away the Pioneers’ 3-point shooting, size and length to rebound and got just enough scoring to pull away for a 37-28 triumph in a showdown of Section Four’s top teams. The win keeps the Barons in first place. “It is huge. It is awesome,” Barons’ coach Tyson Hayes said. “We have a long season to go and what we are really happy about is we Photo by Mona Steinhauer have not hit our ceiling yet. We still Manheim’s Wyatt Becker scores over the Pioneers’ Isaiah Parido think we can get a little bit more out during the Barons’ 47-36 loss in last Friday’s Section Three game of this team, in terms of execution. at Lampeter-Strasburg.
“We did a great job guarding the 3-point line. We stressed that, to run them off the 3-point line and make them a driving team, and we did a really good job with that.” Hayes, a first-year coach at Central, was an assistant at Annville-Cleona and a former head coach at New Covenant, inherits a hungry team that took a lot of lumps last year. This season game appears to have slowed down for this Baron squad that now has some experience. Manheim took a 9-4 lead after the first quarter against L-S and led 20-13 at halftime. Freshman Maddie Knier dominated the action, scoring 14 the Barons’ 20 first-half points, while also grabbing six rebounds and a block in the first half. Trailing 13-11 with 3:33 remaining in the second quarter, the Barons went on a 7-0 run with Knier scoring all seven points, giving Manheim an 18-13 lead. Kassidy Michael, who finished with 10 points, scored five of the Barons’ seven third-quarter points and added five more to close out the fourth. With a comfortable lead, Hayes had the Barons spread the floor, using his ball-handlers to drive to the hoop for layups or kick out for open 3-pointers. Knier and a host of Barons limited L-S to one shot by controlling the rebounds and the Barons were never really threatened. Manheim had 28-13 edge in rebounds for the game. “We emphasis that, and its always one of our keys, rebounding and don’t foul,” Hayes said. “Those are our two keys, and if we do that, we are good, especially against a team that shoots a lot of threes, because that leads to long rebounds and fast breaks.” Knier led all scorers with 18 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks, including a block and rebound with 3:55 left in the fourth when L-S was trying to mount a comeback and trailed by seven. The Barons did not fare as well Saturday night, Jan. 4, losing at West York to Eastern York 40-38 in the Lady Bulldog Classic. Michael paced the Barons with 14 points and Knier added 13. Manheim has a 3-2 league record and are 8-4 overall.

East Coast supporters generated nearly 30,000 of those comforters for MCC’s ministries. During The Great Winter Warm-up events, volunteers are invited to help knot comforters as they celebrate MCC’s centennial. Participants will work together to combine handmade comforter tops, warm

Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) will kick off its 100-year anniversary celebration in 2020 by bringing together volunteers to make 6,500 comforters on one day - Saturday, Jan. 18 - during an event known as The Great Winter Warm-up. Locally, the MCC East Coast office has set an additional goal of collecting 5,000 comforters during January, so events are scheduled before and after Jan. 18. The region has many MCC supporters who donate comforters throughout the year, including members of the Plain community, which spurred the added challenge.
