LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster, has announced its upcoming hours and a program.

LancasterHistory will be closed to the public through Monday, Jan. 16. All operations will reopen for the 2023 season on Tuesday, Jan. 17. LancasterHistory will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. with tours of Wheatland from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Research Center will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The first Regional History Colloquium of 2023 will be held on Thursday, Jan. 26. Doors will open and the reception will begin at 5 p.m. The lecture will start at 5:30 p.m., and it will also be streamed via Zoom. The program is sponsored by The Civil War Museum of Philadelphia.

Towson University professor Andrew Diemer will discuss his latest book, “Vigilance: The Life of William Still, Father of the Underground Railroad.” William Still was born free in New Jersey, the youngest son of parents who had escaped from slavery. In the decades leading up to the Civil War, Still organized an abolitionist network that aided hundreds of freedom seekers who passed through Pennsylvania. He then published the stories of these freedom seekers.

Copies of the book will be available for purchase in the museum store while supplies last. Diemer will be available to sign copies of his book starting at 5 p.m.

This program is free and open to the public. In-person attendance requires advance registration in order to guarantee a seat. Due to capacity restrictions, tickets may not be available at the door. Virtual attendance requires advance registration in order to receive the Zoom link.

To register, visit www.lancast erhistory.org or call 717-3924633. Registration will close online on Jan. 26 at 5:30 p.m. The online version of this program will also be recorded and uploaded to LancasterHistory’s YouTube channel after the event.

Prior to Jan. 26, those who plan to attend should confirm the location of this event as it may change due to community health concerns or weather conditions. LancasterHistory will notify ticketholders of any change in date or venue, such as a change to an onlineonly program. Attendees should also consult LancasterHistory’s Health & Safety Protocols prior to attending any lecture in person for the most up-to-date information on the organization’s practices and policies.
