Shining A Light On An Old-Fashioned Art Form 3-D printer has opened up a whole new world for Will Haggans. The Manheim man purchased the device recently and began experimenting with what he could do. “I started looking into cool things to make,” he said, noting that his daughter Trinity helped him come up with ideas. “ We made some 2020 ornaments. We made a trophy of toilet paper.” Then Haggans hit on an idea that combined an old-fashioned art form with modern-day technology. He began making lithophanes, etched artwork made from translucent material. When a light source is placed behind the lithophane, the artwork is illuminated. Unlike traditional portraits or engravings, a lithophane presents a 3-D image. “Lithophanes go way back into the 1700s,” he explained. “They were originally engraved in porcelain.” After learning that he could use his 3-D printer to make lithophanes, Haggans produced a few

and offered them for sale on Facebook, using photographs provided by customers. “We just did this to see if anyone would be interested,” he stated. “The response was amazing. We had so much interest, we added a second 3-D printer and we’re looking into getting a third.” Haggans, whose day job is working as a network analyst for Penn State Health, said he’d never made and sold anything like lithophanes before this. It takes him between 10 and 15 hours to make each one, and each one also presents its own challenges. “No two are the same,” he explained. “There is a lot of trial and error involved. You have to recalibrate the printer between each project and adjust it every time. In the beginning, we did have a couple of total failures.” Haggans, who also gets help from his wife, Joyce, and his other daughter, Cayla, is considering selling the lithophanes at craft shows or possibly taking the 3-D printer on the road. Will Haggans of Manheim poses with some of the lithophanes he’s made with his 3-D printer.

Police Departments Encourage Blood Donation East Hempfield Township Police Department (PD) has participated in the Bleed Blue Challenge since the initiative’s inception. “We want to support Penn Medicine LG Health in its quest to get donations, especially in a pandemic year,” explained Lt. Jen Brubaker. “The blood stays local. It’s a way to give back to the community.” The Bleed Blue Challenge is a program of the Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health (LG Health) Blood Donor Center and is running from Jan. 4 to Friday, Jan. 29. During the initiative, participating police departments are encouraging members of their staffs and their communities to give blood at LG Health blood drives and at the center, 2104 Harrisburg Pike, Suite 202, Lancaster. Blood donor recruiter Anita Blizzard introduced the Bleed Blue Challenge with four PDs two years ago. It has grown to include 15 PDs this year: Manheim Township, East Hempfield, East Lampeter, Columbia Borough, Millersville Borough, Millersville University, Lancaster City, Lititz Borough, West Hempfield, Northwest Regional, Mount Joy Borough, Pequea Township, Quarryville Borough, Strasburg Borough, and Pennsylvania State Police, Troop J. A total of 80 units were received during the challenge in 2020, with Millersville University PD receiving credit and a plaque for the most donors. LG Health aims to keep 200 units in stock at all times, Blizzard noted. “What they did last year was really good. With more police stations involved, you’d assume that you’d do even better (this year),” she said. Brubaker and other police officers planned to donate blood during the Bleed Blue Blood Drive on National Law
Enforcement Day, Jan. 7. “Our first responders and police are great leaders in caring for our community. This effort is one more contribution they are willing to make,” said LG Health director of laboratory operations Brian Stambaugh. To participate in the Bleed Blue Challenge, individuals may make an appointment by visiting http://lancaster generalhealth.org/lgh/our -services/blood-bank/about -us/blood-drives.aspx or by
calling 717-544-0170, option 1. Donors must be age 16 or older, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health, have no history of hepatitis, and not have received tattoos or body piercings within the last three months. Individuals should be well hydrated and have eaten a substantial amount within four hours before donating. Those who have had COVID-19 may donate if it has been at least 28 days since diagnosis and they have
no symptoms. Blizzard noted that COVID-19 is not spread through blood, but the donor center wants to reduce risk of infecting staff members and other donors. All potential donors will receive a thermal screening and be asked a series of questions. Everyone must wear a mask. Masks will be provided for those who do not have them. Readers who have questions or concerns may call the blood donor center at 717544-0170, option 2.
Lithophanes from pg 1 “ We’re looking into the idea of doing demonstrations on how the machine works,” he said. Along with lithophanes, Haggans is working on expanding his offerings to include items engraved with lasers. “We’ve been working on all types of engraved things,” he noted. “ We’ve been experimenting with laser etching glass and wood.”
No matter what he’s making, Haggans said he’s enjoying getting creative with his family, and he’s happy to bring back an art form that’s centuries old. “It’s just something fun to do,” he stated. “People seem to really like it.” For more information or to order a lithophane, readers may contact Haggans through Facebook or may email him at whaggans @me.com.

“Less Snore, More Cuddle” Are you having trouble sleeping in 2021? If so, please... Take This Reader’s Quiz: 1. Do you snore at night, or sleep with someone who does? 2. Do you wake up with pain in your back or neck? 3. Do you share a bed with someone who wants a firmer or softer mattress than you? 4. Do you wish you could wake up more refreshed and full of energy? If you answered “Yes” twice or more, this story is for you.
Introducing “Less Snore, More Cuddle™” Sleep Systems The only sleep systems that provide a Cuddle Zone in the middle, while raising or lowering head or feet sections. This solves common health problems for couples who sleep together. Here are some of the healthy benefits:
The Snoring Solution Did you know that astronauts don’t snore in space? Snoring is made worse by gravity’s effect on the throat, which narrows the airway. For this reason, snoring can be cured by sleeping in zero gravity -- or on an adjustable Cuddle Zone sleep system to elevate you head.
Stop Compromising Your Sleep If you wish you half of the bed was firmer or softer, a Cuddle Zone system can help. With “His & Her” custom-fit technology, you get a firmness that’s just right for each of you, you keep the Cuddle Zone.
Back and Neck Pain, Gone Sleeping without pain requires body support and spinal alignment. Unlike “firm or soft” mattresses, Cuddle Zone systems support the spine and neck with 2 to 4 comfort layers.
More Energy, More Life Cuddle Zone systems help give you deep, restorative sleep. Your muscles repair and grow, and your brain flushes out toxins. You wake up refreshed and energized.
Budget Bed or Sleep System? Why visit a local store when you can shop online? Because we don’t sell budget beds. We offer sleep systems, combining mattress, adjustable base and pillow. Each fitted to your needs. You can even experience any sleep system in our Dream Room. No website does that.
And those “unbiased” mattress review websites? They’re often owned by huge, private equity firms. But we’re not a faceless company. We’re locally owned in Lancaster. When you shop here, you support the community.
Now Explore Your Options At Gardner’s Mattress & More, we’ve curated over 24 Cuddle Zone sleep systems for you to see in person, 7 days a week. Private appointments are available. People enjoy our shopping experience, in part because there’s no sales pressure ever. And we have over 200 verified stories of customer delight for your review. The Lancaster Conservancy recently announced that Lancaster County is now a certified National Wildlife Federation (NWF) Community Wildlife Habitat. This certification shows Lancaster’s commitment to be a healthier, greener, and more wildlife-friendly county by creating wildlife habitat throughout its communities while also educating and engaging residents. The Lancaster Conservancy’s Community Wildlife Habitat initiative is a volunteer led effort that works with local property owners and organizations to encourage planting native plants, trees, and gardens that reduce stormwater runoff while providing habitat and food for wildlife and pollinators. The NWF has certified more than 568 sites, including yards,
schools, businesses, community gardens, parks, and places of worship. Each of these sites provides the four basic elements that all wildlife need to thrive food, water, cover, and places to raise young - while integrating sustainable gardening and landscaping practices. Linda Ferich, who spearheaded this initiative for the last three years, was recently notified that Lancaster County now has enough certified sites for the county to qualify as the first in the state of Pennsylvania with this designation. With a critical mass of certified gardens, the goal is to create corridors for wildlife to thrive. Ferich personally visited and advised well over 300 property owners over the past three years. Ferich,
Allison Zechman, and Margie Hall also led Habitat Steward trainings where 40 community volunteers were taught to identify nonnative and invasive plants, analyze gardens and sites, and implement other sustainable landscaping practices. In recent years, the group of volunteers also launched additional initiatives focused specifically on creating habitat for wildlife at schools and places of worship. Encouraging community members to create native habitat is also one of the primary goals of the Conservancy’s annual Lancaster Water Week slated to take place for its fourth year from Friday, June 4, through Saturday, June 12, 2021. Removing invasive plants, planting natives, and reimagining lawns are
critical steps toward saving pollinators, cleaning the water, and enhancing livability in communities for the long term. Readers who would like to have a Community Wildlife Habitat Steward schedule a visit to assess their site may contact Ferich at lferich@lancasterconservan cy.org. To learn more and get started gardening for wildlife, readers may visit www.lancasterconservancy .org/habitat.

To date, he is the first and only African American elected as a Lancaster County commissioner.
The breakfast, which is a fundraiser for the Crispus Attucks Community Center (CACC), will feature Danielle Woods of WGAL-TV as master of ceremonies. Food Bank from pg 1 “fighting hunger, improving lives, strengthening communities.” The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is headquartered in Harrisburg with a second location in Williamsport. It serves 27 counties throughout central Pennsylvania through a network of more than 1,000 partner agencies and programs. More than 60% of the clients the food bank serves are working families with children.
