As Pilot Club of Central Pennsylvania founder Lisa Palmquist welcomed everyone in attendance at the club’s luncheon for caregivers on Jan. 11, she shared that the event was “a bit of a dream come true for her. Palmquist worked as an instructional support teacher in the Hempfield School District for 26 years and spent many summers serving as a camp nurse at Aaron’s Acres, which offers summer camps for children and young adults with special needs. These experiences and others helped Palmquist to develop a deep sense of appreciation for parents and caregivers. “To be in their shoes 24/7 - it is just amazing what they do, remarked Palmquist. “They need to remember to take care of themselves first, and that’s the message that I wanted to get across (at the luncheon): You need to take care See Caregivers pg 5

people to come out and talk with the artists to learn more about how their art is created and consider purchasing some local art for their homes or businesses.” “Our restaurants will be creating artistic specials, and our retail shops will be open,” noted Schell. “It’s a great reason to come downtown and see what’s available in Mount Joy.” According to Schell, most of the artists are from a 10-mile radius of Mount Joy. All artwork is original in design and concept and created by the participating artist; mass-produced and imported items are not permitted. Schell came up with the idea for a Festival of the Arts in Mount Joy after receiving a tremendous response from artists interested in displaying work in the MSMJ large display window when that opportunity was made available. The

2004, when village leaders invited volunteers to help with community rebuilding efforts. The greatest concentration of Rama is a group of 1,400 people who reside on a povertystricken island almost forgotten by the mainland. The World Health Organization reports that malnutrition is increasing each year for Rama children. They face widespread malnutrition, inadequate water and sewage systems, and sporadic public health measures. One of the Rama Cay Villagers whose life has been touched by FIA is Pete. Pete used to live in a 10-by-10-foot thatched-roof hut with his common-law wife, four children, and many extended family members. His days alternated between binge drinking and trying to fish and subsistence farm his small plot of depleted soil. When FIA workers invited Pete to learn trade skills, he jumped at the opportunity. For the past eight years, Pete has worked alongside FIA’s volunteer teams to dig wells, install boat docks, construct a pedestrian bridge, and clear land for a community playground and laundry/shower house. The masonry, carpentry, and construction skills Pete learned eventually enabled him to make his own clay bricks and build a new house for his family to move to the mainland. Pete also began attending ongoing Bible classes led by FIA volunteers. Pete’s story is just one example of the thousands of lives impacted through the efforts of FIA. In 2019, more than 70 workers from Pennsylvania traveled with FIA to impact more than 250,000 destitute people in six remote locations around the globe. Thanks to the generosity of local businesses, churches, and individual donors, in 2019 FIA brought clean water to more than 14,000 West Africans through well-drilling efforts; provided medical, dental, and vision assistance to more than 1,200 Bolivians along the Amazon River through the El Misionero riverboat ministry; and taught life and trade skills and God’s word to hundreds of students from Papua New Guinea, Nicaragua, Vanuatu, and Moldova through educational sponsorship efforts. The organization also impacted more than 215,000 villagers from remote bush regions of Brazil and Bolivia through the 24/7 broadcasts of Christian teaching and music on Inspiracion’s radio; provided more than 4,000 inmates in Papua New Guinea with water, biscuits, and prison ministry; and assisted nearly 150 Rama Cay through community transformation efforts in Nicaragua. Volunteers are welcome to sign up for trips in 2020.

The inaugural event in 2019 drew approximately 400 people - a number Schell hopes to see doubled this time. Approximately 40 caregivers from throughout Lancaster County attended the lunch at Salem United Methodist Church in Manheim, the majority of whom are parents, grandparents, or guardians of children with special needs and abilities. Pilot Club members served lunch and dessert and gave goodie bags prepared for each person in attendance as a small memento to thank them for what they do.

New York resident and mother of three Faith Clarke spoke to the group on “Radical Self-Care.” Clarke is the author of “Parenting Like a Ninja: An Autism Mom’s Guide to Professional Productivity” and a national speaker on the need for self-care for parents of special needs children. As Clarke shared her own journey with those gathered, she also invited them to answer the question: “What do you crave?” After hearing responses like alone time, forgiveness, and understanding, Clarke presented another interactive statement: “Even though I have experienced (fill in the blank), I have learned (fill in the blank).” “Even though you are craving these things, you are also massively improving and I want you to have a statement to affirm these things,” encouraged Clarke. Pilot Club of Central Pennsylvania member Karen Beck noted that serving caregivers and providing pick-me-ups for caregivers is one of the key tenets of Pilot International, which has chapters throughout the nation. Brain safety and fitness is another focus of service for club members, along with fostering youth leadership and development in local high schools through the facilitation of Anchor Clubs. In addition to service projects and special events, Pilot Club of Central Pennsylvania members meet regularly on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the third-floor conference room of the Lancaster General Health Suburban Pavilion, 2100 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. When Lancaster Bible College (LBC) graduated more than 160 students on Dec. 13, 2019, Tracey Jones, who had earned her doctorate in leadership, was among them. Jones, daughter of Charlie “Tremendous” Jones and his wife, Gloria, is no stranger to LBC, but she was not an alumna … until now. “I have been a trustee of the school since 2010,” explained Tracey, who noted that she returned to Pennyslvania in 2008 when her father passed. She met Dr. Peter Teague and became involved in the capital campaign for the Teague Learning Commons, where the library named for her parents is located, and worked with development and fundraising for the Charles Frey Academic Center. “It was near and dear to my father and mother to support the school and scholarships,” said Tracey, who also took over her father’s publishing and speaking business when she came back to the area. Tracey went to Word of Life Bible Institute in Pottersville, N.Y., for a year after graduating from high school. She then attended Houghton College in Houghton, N.Y., for a year before earning an associate degree at the New Mexico Military Institute. She received an appointment to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. She finished with a Bachelor of Science, graduating as a commissioned officer and working on fighter jets. She served in the first Gulf War and the Bosnian War, and she lived in England, Italy, Germany, and Turkey. She followed her service career by working for Applied Materials in Austin, Texas, while she earned a Master of Business

Administration in global management from the University of Phoenix. When LBC instituted its doctoral program, Tracey decided to earn her doctorate. She entered the program at the end of August in 2015. Unfortunately, the timing was tumultuous. “I had just been through a shift with the business and lost my older brother,” recalled Tracey. “I came into it really broken.” Rather than becoming discouraged, Tracey found solace in her studies. “The dissertation program was a source of inspiration and encouragement and camaraderie,” said Tracey. “When you’re hurting as a leader (and) you talk to other leaders, and they say, ‘Keep the faith. We’re going through (this too),’ it

is a sense of great comfort.” Tracey’s dissertation was titled “Leader Emergence in an Organizational Crisis - A Case Study of Follower SelfEfficacy.” “Self-efficacy (means) motivation,” explained Tracey, who, as part of her research, studied a merger that almost did not occur. “In the merger, 90% of what went wrong could have been seen with due diligence,” she said, adding that she had a revelation about halfway through the program. “(I realized that) if you don’t have self-motivated followers, (it doesn’t matter) if you’re the greatest leader in the world,” she said. “Leadership is a dance. I learned that leadership is not as important as finding good followers.” Going forward, Tracey hopes to use what she has learned to work with See Accomplishment pg 7

He is probably one of the toughest kids I’ve ever been around.” Connor Zeamer pulled out an escape in the closing moments of his bout at 145 pounds to cut Garden Spot’s lead to 6-3. But Garden Spot won the next nine bouts for a commanding 48-3 advantage. Connor Beck at 113 pounds broke the scoring drought for the Barons, earning a fall at 1:02, making it 48-9. Senior Brandon Kheuangthirath gained a 7-4 decision at 120 pounds to cut the lead to 48-12 and Betancourt’s fall made it 48-18. SWIMMING On a good day, Heather Fittery fields a team with 10 boys and 10 girls swimming for Manheim Central. That’s a good day. Then there are days like Thursday, Jan. 16 when Fittery had nine boys and only six girls in the pool. The outcome was a 111-50 loss to Cocalico on the boys’ side and an 82-59 Cocalico victory on the girls’ side. But wins and losses is not how Fittery judges her squads. “Even though both teams lost we had many best times,” she said. “We had some personal bests from Max

Mentzer also won the 50 free (28.03). She and Redcay didn’t just achieve personal bests in the 100 backstroke and 500 free, respectively, they won the events. On the boys’ side, Gehman cashed in his personal best in the 100 free into a first place finish, as well as first in the 50 free (22.31). The boys also claimed the 400 freestyle relay with a team of Gehman, Shearn, Wyatt Kupres and Luke Weaver with a time of 3:57.17. On Tuesday, Jan. 14 the Barons lost 105-60 to the Lancaster Catholic boys and 105-49 to the LC girls. The Manheim faithful sat in New Holland waiting for the Barons to flip the switch and turn the tables on Garden Spot. In a battle of Section Two undefeated teams, the Spartans built a lead, but Manheim still had strong wrestlers coming up. Surely, the Barons would fight back. Unfortunately, injuries that caused four MC starters to miss the meet, allowed the Spartans to stay in control and roll to a 52-18 victory over the Barons Wednesday, Jan. 15. “They (Garden Spot) are a good team and they are senior-heavy and we still have four starters out, so I was actually really proud with how we did,” said head coach Billy Chamberlain. “Every guy fought. He made quick work of his opponent, earning a pin in 36 seconds. He broke the career mark of Jordan Enck. The record is a reward for his hard work, Betancourt said, but he still hasn’t reached is ultimate goal. “It means a lot to me, my family, my team and my coaches,” he said. “They know all the work I put into this, working day in and day out with the team. 17 advantage into intermission. After a low scoring third quarter where Solanco outscored the Barons 7-4, Manheim brought the game home from the free throw line, making 16-of-19. The Barons rode the momentum of this win for a 40-33 victory over Cocalico in Manheim Friday, Jan. 17. Knier had a game-high 13 points, including a 3-pointer. Mia Reed added two treys and Michael and Nolt each nailed 3-pointers. Manheim (6-2 Section Three, 12-4 overall) led 26-22 at halftime and outscored the Eagles 14-11 in the second half to hold off Cocalico. RIFLE The Barons remained undefeated at the beginning of last week, pulling out another close match, beating Manheim Township, 495-491 on Tuesday, Jan. 14. Sophomore Anna Haldeman shot a 100, the only perfect score for either team. Seniors Hunter Shoop Brayden Groff and Andrew Conrod fired 99s. Trent Groff, a sophomore, was right behind them with a 98. “Consistency and having a team that is there for each other,” Barons’ coach Steve Waddington said about the keys to the victory. “If someone has an off night, others have been there to back up the team’s score.” On Thursday, Jan. 16 Ephrata snapped Central from the ranks of unbeaten, in a match that became an instant classic.

The Mountaineers beat the Barons 793 to 792. These were two great teams and two great scores, Waddington said. The score was 497 to 497 after the top 5 shooters scores were added up. Then they went to the sixth highest shooter each for team - both 99s. Then the 7th... both 99s. Then 8th where Ephrata had a 98 and Manheim had a 97. “A match that came down to a millimeter difference between two great teams,” Waddington said. “Yep, what a match! Just wish we had one more point and we would have been on the winning side.” Brandon Groff and Conrod each had 100s. Gage McCabe, Shoop and Haldeman registered a 99s. Sophomore Tami Groff had a 97.

allowed the Eagles one last drive to the hoop as time expired. Cam Eberly had a team-high 15 points, including two treys. The Barons were down 12 in the first half and trailed 27-17 at halftime, but used a big third quarter where they outscored the Eagles 16-4 to get back in the game and take the lead. “Cam Eberly was great the entire game,” Barons’ coach Charlie Fisher said. “The key to the game was our defensive intensity in the second half. It allowed us to bring the intensity on offense as well. Cocalico got some offensive rebounds, which led to some key points for them.” GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Manheim defeated Solanco 46-41 on Tuesday, Jan. 14 in Quarryville. Freshman Maddie Knier had a gamehigh 23 points, including nine points in the second quarter. She hauled-in 12 rebounds and added a 3-pointer. “She’s a heck of a kid and a heck of a basketball player, and she only ever wants to get better,” Barons’ coach Tyson Hayes said. “She’s getting shots up any chance she can get, and it proves it when she goes out there and plays. She’s a really good piece to our puzzle.” Kassidy Michael added 10 points, including going 4-for-5 at the foul line in the fourth quarter. Knier was 8-for8 from the charity stripe in the final quarter The Barons forced 19 turnovers in the game. Rachel Nolt had two 3-pointers in the contest.

They are an awesome group of kids that have been dedicated coming in to practice later at night (8:30-10pm) and enjoy the sport!” BOWLING The Barons defeated LampeterStrasburg, 7-0, behind a team score of 2,661 to 1,628 in total pins. Senior Brandon Henry led all bowlers with a 644, rolling a 216, 224 and 204. “I feel the key to winning was that they bowled their game,” Barons’ coach Alan Sides said. “They did well making spares when they weren’t getting strikes.” Senior Austin Howard rolled a 216, 211, 182 for a 609. Notable performances went to Oren Martin, a senior, who had a 202 in his third game. Sides said that Catey Sides, even though she is on the junior varsity, posted the third highest score overall, including varsity, with 159, 176, 158 for a 493. Ethan Howard, also a JV bowler, rolled a consistent 158, 159 and 155 for a 472. Manheim suffered a tough loss to Cocalico at Dutch Lanes on Friday, Jan. 17, losing 7-0. The team totals were Cocalico 3,056 to 2,712. Henry was the Barons’ top bowler with a 665 on game scores of 244, 229 and 192. BOYS’ BASKETBALL The Barons used a big first-half scoring output to cruise to a 62-46 home triumph over Solanco on Tuesday, Jan. 14, putting the Barons record to 7-8 overall and giving them a three-game win streak. Freshman Trey Grube had a teamhigh 17 points, including three 3-pointers, Wyatt Becker and Griffin DiFrancesco chipped in 11. Central jumped out to a 19-7 first quarter lead and led 34-17 at halftime and led by as many as 17 in the second half. Solanco cut the lead to nine in the second half, but Judd Novak got a turnover and the Barons converted this into a basket to boost the lead to 11 points and soon the Barons’ lead was back to 16 points. Manheim dropped a heart-breaker Friday, Jan. 17 in Denver, as the Eagles scored on a drive at the buzzer to win 41-39. Insects To Highlight Annual Extension Meeting If asked whether they would be happy in a world without insects, some people might answer in the affirmative. However, such a scenario would be disastrous for Earth and its inhabitants, entomologists have said. “Insects are integral to the health of the planet and people,” explained Michael Skvarla, director of the Insect Identification Laboratory at Penn State University (PSU). “They pollinate our crops and feed on pests, help decompose dead animals, form the base of food webs, and stabilize natural environments.” PSU Department of Entomology graduate students Brooke Lawrence and Ginamaria Roman Echevarria will offer a

perspective on the worldwide decline of insects in their keynote presentation, “A World of Insects: The Good, the Bad, and the Changes,” at the Penn State Extension Lancaster County annual meeting and social event at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. In keeping with the family-friendly style of the evening, the presentation will be appropriate for people of all ages and will have an interactive component. Attendees will have an opportunity to view exhibits featuring stream macroinvertebrates and native plants for insects. The event will begin with a social hour, during which guests may enjoy foods and beverages provided by local

commodity groups and vendors. The program will follow. In addition to learning about the importance of insects’ roles in agriculture and the environment, attendees will be introduced to Brent Hales, the new director of Penn State Extension, who will share about Lancaster County Extension programs, including 4-H youth development and Master Gardeners. Guests will also hear the latest news regarding spotted lanternfly research and receive an overview of “Hemp: Lancaster County’s Heritage Crop.” In addition to his role as Extension director, Hales serves as an associate dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences at Penn State. He received a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Brigham Young

University, a master’s degree in sociology from Middle Tennessee State University, and a doctorate in rural sociology from Iowa State University. Hales previously served as the senior associate dean and CFO of the University of Minnesota Extension, an associate dean for the University of Minnesota Extension Center for Community Vitality, and the director of the University of Minnesota Crookston, Economic Development Authority University Center. Hales’ primary area of research is holistic community and economic development and entrepreneurship. He is the founder of the Southern Entrepreneurship Program, which teaches entrepreneurship skills to high school and community college students and to displaced workers

throughout the United States and around the globe. He is also a past president of the Community Development Society. Penn State Extension is an educational network that gives people in each of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties access to Penn State’s resources and expertise. It is funded through state and county governments, as well as the United States Department of Agriculture. Through this county-based partnership, Penn State Extension educators, faculty members, and local volunteers work together to share research-based information with local residents. There is no cost to attend the annual meeting, but registration is required. Readers must register by Monday, Jan. 27, by visiting http://extension.psu. edu/lancaster-county-extension -annual-meeting or calling 877345-0691. Penn State encourages disabled people to participate in its programs and activities. Readers who anticipate

Brent Hales needing any type of accommodation or who have questions about the physical access provided may call the Lancaster County Extension office at 717-3946851 before their visits.

A First Friday reception for “From Scribbles to More Refined Scribbles - A Journey of a Literal Lifetime,” an art exhibit featuring the work of Lancaster native Jenni Buffington, will be held at the Community Room on King, 106 W. King St., Lancaster, on Friday, Feb. 7, from 6 to 9 p.m. The event will include time to meet the artist, live music and food. During a stay at her mother’s house after an illness, the artist discovered that her mother had held on to every piece of artwork Buffington had ever created, which developed into the idea to hold a concept show. The upcoming exhibit will showcase Buffington’s progression as an artist. The reception will feature live music by Stephen Diehl, another Lancaster native, who will perform original acoustic melodies.
