February Donation Drive To Benefit Local Organizations By Sara D. Ulrich
Thanks to several projected snowstorms for Lancaster County in the last few weeks, many residents have visited their local grocery stores to stock up on essentials. The crew at Northwest Emergency Medical Services (NWEMS) hopes that shoppers will visit their local markets again soon, but for a charitable reason this time around. NWEMS is planning its annual February Food Drive, which will run the entire month of February and will benefit three local food bank organizations: the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown, the Manheim Central Food Pantry, and the East Donegal/Conoy Area Christian Food Bank. These three organizations are located within the NWEMS service area. Donations may be dropped off at

Colebrook St., or the Elizabethtown station, 380 W. Bainbridge St. A local business has loaned NWEMS a shopping cart that will be located in the
NWEMS Manheim lobby where donations will be collected. Community outreach manager Lori Shenk explained that when NWEMS was planning to organize its first
food drive six years ago, February seemed like a good time of year. “This seems like a time of year when there is more need but less emphasis on donating,” Shenk commented. See Food Drive pg 3

Bicyclists take part in the Covered Bridge Ride organized each August by the Lancaster Bicycle Club. The ride raises funds that the club uses to give out grants to area organizations for bicycles, bike racks, signage, and more. Applications for this year’s grant program are due by Feb. 15. By Ann Mead Ash
“We have given out $350,000,” said John Mullineaux of the Lancaster Bicycle Club (LBC). “The single biggest (amount) was for municipal and EMS (emergency medical services) bike
patrols. We’ve purchased bicycles and equipment (for those organizations).” Mullineaux added that Lancaster police and police stations in a number of county boroughs have received funds from the club to purchase bikes. See Bike Grants pg 4
Joanne Ranck Dirks, assistant manager for the Farm & Gardens at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, is looking forward to the interactive segment of the upcoming workshop focusing on traditional seeds and Pennsylvania Dutch foods. “All of us eat food, and many of (the attendees) will be gardeners,” shared Dirks. “When we make space for discussion, everyone can join in.” The winter workshop, which will be held at the museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, Feb. 23, will be broken into two parts. The 9 a.m. to noon session will include an interactive session on seeds native to the Americas and the Three Sisters garden method. The
William Woys Weaver second session, which will also take place on Feb. 23, will run from 1 to 4 p.m. It will feature a lecture on the Pennsylvania Dutch kitchen garden and its influence on the distinctive cuisine associated with this ethnic group. See Workshop pg 3

must be grown to keep the species alive. “When you talk about seed preservation, it means growing them in the garden on a rotating basis,” she explained. The morning session of the upcoming workshop will be divided into three parts. Part one will explore the impact of Native American seeds. “It’s amazing how many have origins in South and Central America,” said Dirks. “(The seeds) migrated north with the Native American peoples.” The workshop will include time for round table discussion and a presentation on Three Sisters gardening, which focuses on growing corn, beans, and squash.

Europe and then returned to America with Pennsylvania settlers. Another segment of the afternoon presentation will focus on the foods that are traditional among Pennsylvania Dutch families. “(The kitchen garden) was the woman’s garden close to the kitchen,” said Dirks, who noted that four-square gardens usually contained carrots, bush beans, and pole beans, with a border of medicinal herbs, along with cooking herbs. Potatoes, cabbages, and onions that were used in bulk were grown in large fields. According to Dirks, Weaver will also spend time discussing the distinctions between types of Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine. “In the third part (of the afternoon session, Weaver) will talk about Pennsylvania Dutch cooking and
Food drive organizers reached out to the local food banks to ascertain the greatest needs. In addition to nonperishable food items such as canned fruit, canned or instant potatoes, pasta sauce, crackers, canned tuna or chicken, jelly, ground coffee, and bottled water or juice, other donations that will be accepted include toiletry items, such as laundry detergent, shampoo, deodorant, and tissues. A full list of most-needed items can be found at www.man heimcentralfoodpantry.org or on the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown Facebook page.
According to Shenk, volunteers gather in the first few days of March to sort the donations and divide them up between the food banks according to their needs. After sorting, approximately two ambulance loads of food will be delivered to each food bank. “People have been very generous,” Shenk said of previous years’ donations. Shenk shared plans for a future program that NWEMS is working to create with Lancaster EMS. The program, still in its infancy, will strive to serve individuals with diagnosis-specific nutrition needs, specifically those with strict income limitations. Initial efforts will focus on developing the program in partnership with the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown. The service is slated to offer food items for individuals with diabetes, heart conditions, or other issues that require a specific diet. “Our hope is that we can develop a sustainable service that can be the model for expansion into other communities,” Shenk said. “This isn’t part of the February Food Drive, but we are starting to find ways to address these types of needs over the next year.” For more information on NWEMS and its service to the community, readers may visit www.nwems86.org.

Both sessions will be presented by William Woys Weaver, an internationally known food historian, who makes his home in Devon. He is the author of a number of cookbooks, including the award-winning “Pennsylvania Dutch Country Cooking.” According to Dirks, Weaver has donated seeds to the Landis Valley heirloom seed program. She shared that Weaver became interested in seeds when he discovered that his grandfather, an avid gardener, had been working to preserve seeds from traditional plants. “(Weaver) committed to growing (the seeds) and keeping them growing,” said Dirks, who added that heirloom seeds
Dirks said that the practice originated in South America. “(Three Sisters gardening) is a Native American term and a practice the early settlers would have learned from their Native American neighbors, and it still works,” she explained. During the afternoon workshop, Weaver will delve into the Pennsylvania Dutch kitchen garden and the foods that this type of garden brought to the tables of different regions of Pennsylvania. The four-part session will begin with the seeds the immigrants brought with them. “Some of those seeds had also come from South America,” said Dirks, explaining that Spanish and Italian explorers brought seeds back to their homelands and that those seeds moved north through

The ride, which dates back 40 years, was originally just for club members. “We expanded (the ride) to include visitors because of the great place Lancaster County is,” said Mullineaux. Originally, the intention of the ride was to raise funds to augment the club’s budget, but in the 1990s, Bicycling magazine listed the ride as the best in Pennsylvania. “Attendance exploded,” said Mullineaux. “One year, we hit 4,000 (riders).” The ride is now

“I pull all the applications together and do a presentation for the board, and they (usually) vote up or down,” said Mullineaux, who added that sometimes the amount of the grant request is modified by the group. Those receiving grants must initiate their projects during the 2019 calendar year. The grants were first given in 1990. Over the years, the types of requests that have been granted have varied. “We have spent money on bicycle advocacy,” recalled Mullineaux. “We have spent more than $30,000 on bicycle racks.” Mullineaux said many bicycle racks seen in

Manheim Christian Day School (MCDS), 686 Lebanon Road, Manheim, has announced that open enrollment time will begin in February. Families interested in a Christian education for their children from prekindergarten age through eighth grade are invited to the school’s upcoming open house, scheduled for Monday, Feb. 4, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again from 6 to 8 p.m. In the case of inclement weather, the event will be rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 11. Parents and their children are welcome to come during the daytime slot to see classes in action and tour the school. The evening time slot will provide another option for families’ convenience. Tours of the school will be offered, along with opportunities to meet classroom teachers.
One focus at the open house will be the school’s kindergarten program. Two fullday kindergarten options are offered each year: a five-day program and a three-day program. The five-day option is designed for families with working parents or for students needing extra enrichment prior to entering first grade. For families that prefer to ease their children into full-time school, the three-day program is offered as a separate class with a designated teacher. This class also works well for students who score high on their kindergarten testing. During the daytime open house, prospective kindergartners and their parents can participate in circle time at 10:30 a.m. Afterward, parents can learn more about the kindergarten program
while their children have an opportunity to explore the classroom and play. The evening open house will give prospective parents an opportunity to ask questions of the kindergarten teachers while their children enjoy free play and a craft. All grades are open to new students and will be represented during both open house events. MCDS began in 1952 and is a Christianbased school for prekindergartners through See MCDS Open House pg 7
Manheim Christian Day School kindergarten students participate in a STEM bridge-building project. The school will hold an open house for prekindergarten through eighth grade on Feb. 4 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Kindergarten will be one focus during the open house.

Barons’ Rifle Team Shoots Rare 500 Score improved. I’ve been blessed with a group of kids that want to improve, and It is like finding a needle in that makes a difference when the kids haystack. work hard and want to get better.” The Manheim Central rifle team Worth noting about the five shootshot a rare 500 score in its match ers to post a 500, four marksmen are Thursday, Jan. 24 against Governor juniors - Brayden Groff, Hunter Shoop, Mifflin. Andrew Cunrod and Gage McCabe and one is a sophomore, Olivia Stone. This bodes well for the future. The Barons have talent and depth. “I see, right now, I have a team of nine people in matches and all have shot a 100,” Waddington said. “So I knew a 500 score was possible, but it is a matter of doing it all at the same time. It doesn’t occur everyday.” It is the first time one of his squads has posted a 500 score since 2009. On Tuesday, Jan. 22 the Barons warmed up for perfection with an impressive 496-489 victory over Garden Spot. Against the Spartans, Stone continued her hot shooting with a 100, making it three matches in row with that score. Freshmen Kami Groff and Ellie McCabe and Brayden Groff and Cunrod all notched 99. Shooting 496 is a good score and got Waddington to start thinking. The week before his team lost two matches to two teams that shot 499 scores. He thought, how do we make our 99s turn into 100s? “We turned them into 100s Thursday,” he said. The Manheim rifle team poses with its targets after shooting a perfect 500 in its 500-485 LancasterSWIMMING Lebanon League victory over Governor Mifflin last Thursday in Manheim. McCaskey beat Manheim 80-69, By Eric G. Stark
That means the Barons top five shooters all posted the top perfect 100 scores. To put this in perspective, since the Lancaster-Lebanon League started using air rifles in 2000, this is only the third time a Steve Waddington led Barons’ squad has accomplished this feat and only the fifth
time in league history “Thursday was awesome because we shot 500,” said Waddington, in his 26th season as Barons coach, after Manheim defeated Governor Mifflin 500-485. “From the beginning of the season until now, these shooters have

but the Baron girls won several events and had strong performances. Senior Ashley Hartzler won the 200 freestyle with a time 2:26.49. The 200 medley relay team consisting of Mckayla Miller, Lily Redcay, Ellie Fittery and Olivia Faulhaber registered their best time at 2:14.86 Faulhaber, a freshman, won the 50 free in 27.89 while Fittery, a sophomore, placed 2nd in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:22.10. Redcay, a junior, won the 100 breaststroke, posting a 1:24.76 and Hartzler, a senior, was second with 1:25.15. The boys lost 107-52 to McCaskey, but also had several strong performances. The 200 medley consisting of Nathan Shearn, Luke Weaver, Josh Varner and Mason Nissley placed second with a time of 2:01.57. Other second place efforts included Ethan Harner with a 2:20.17 in the 200 free, and Weaver with a 1:14.94 in the 100 breaststroke. “The swimmers are all improving their times,” coach Heather Fittery said. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Lampeter-Strasburg defeated Manheim Central 55-31 on Tuesday, Jan. 22. The Barons battled and Manheim Coach Amanda Burns said she was proud of her team for playing consistent each quarter, but just not well enough against a good L-S squad. “We put up the same number of shot and had the same number of rebounds as L-S,” Burns said. “The difference is the L-S shots went in and our shots were not going in.” L-S also got to the free throw line 15 times and made 11. “We just have to play better, more
hands off,” Burns said. Summer Bates led the Barons with 10 points, including three 3-pointers and Kassidy Michael added eight points, including a trey. Manheim lost 45-24 to Northern Lebanon on Thursday, Jan. 24, in a game where several Barons were ill. Several players were not used to playing extended minutes. After being held scoreless in the first quarter, the Barons trailed 20-7 at halftime and were just a step slow, Burns said. Laura Good, who became sick during the game, had nine points. Paige Snyder added 10 rebounds. The Barons bounced back Saturday, Jan. 26 with a great showing in a 43-21 loss to Muhlenberg. Good had a team-high 14 points and Nolt added nine points and Michael dished out five assists. The key to the game: Muhlenberg hit 10 of 19 free throws. WRESTLING Going into the final day of the Lancaster-Lebanon League wrestling tournament this past Saturday at Garden Spot, everything had to go the Barons’ way for them to defend its league tournament title. The grapplers came through with wins and bonus points and pulled off a narrow 184.5 to 183.5 victory over Northern Lebanon to secure back-to-back league tourney titles. Heavyweight Tyler Dougherty’s pin at 2:49 brought home the crown for the Barons. Manheim entered the day in sixth place. The Barons had six wrestlers on the podium Saturday, but the real key to the win was Central having a 13-1 record Saturday with nine pins. “The kids that placed went for it and drove it home,” head coach Billy Chamberlain said. “We had to pretty

MERCHANDISER - Manheim Central Edition didn’t control our own destiny. Others had to lose and they did. Northern Lebanon placed 10 wrestlers and we placed six. “They showed a lot of grit. This sets the tone for sectionals, districts and
states. It lets us get set for the end of the year.” Besides Dougherty, other Barons winning gold included Will Betancourt, who earned a pin in the finals at 120 pounds with a time of 1:04. At 132, Cade Zeamer earned an 8-2 decision and Keegan McCord gained a 3-2 decision at 182 pounds. Conner Zeamer took third place at 138 pounds by gaining a fall at 3:41 and Austin Sauder placed fourth, losing 3-0 in the third place bout at 152 pounds. Several Manheim wrestlers had dominant performances. With a 4-0 record with four pins, Betancourt received the Kenneth Ober Outstanding Wrestler Award and the
Floyd “Shorty” Hitchcock Most Fall/Least Time Award with total time for his fall being 7:01. He now has 21 falls on the season. Dougherty was also 4-0, three of the wins by fall. His pin in the championship was key to the Barons getting teams honors. “If he just wins, we don’t win,” Chamberlain said. “He had to get the pin for the bonus points.” Cody Zeamer had a 6-1 record with six pins. His fall in the third place match came against a guy who beat him earlier in the tournament, Chamberlain said. This was a happy ending to a week that started off on a low note.

series. Austin Howard rolled a 618 series. Martin got his first 500 series with a 505 and Lauren Michael rolled a 518. “This was our best match of the year,” Sides said. BOYS’ BASKETBALL Lampeter-Strasburg beat Manheim Central 52-38 Tuesday, Jan. 22. Losing by 14 to the Pioneers, who are ranked seventh in the state, is nothing to be ashamed about. “Our goal was to stick to our game plan and control our possessions,” head coach Charlie Fisher said. “We kept it within seven for most of the game and just missed a couple shots down the stretch and they made their foul shots.” The Pioneers took a 21-14 lead after the first quarter and led by seven, 33-26, at halftime, after both teams scored 12 points in the second quarter. They were even in the third quarter as well, both scoring 11 points. L-S led 44-37 after the third. Senior forward Josh Young had a team-high 13 points. Cam Sell, a senior guard, added 12 points, including two 3-pointers. Fellow senior Carson Brenize added six points, hitting two 3-pointers. “Josh Young was great for us against L-S and Cam Sell controlled the game,” Fisher said. “Cam Eberly and Colton Book played valuable minutes, in addition to the other guys.” Thursday, Jan 24 was a different story. The Barons won a tight game, holding off Northern Lebanon, 36-33. Manheim trailed by as many as six in the third quarter. A couple big shots by Sell, Chase Marquette and Young led to the Barons getting the lead at the end of the third, 26-22. The fourth quarter went back-andforth and Central won it when the Vikings missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Evan Hosler came up with a huge rebound late and Sell made the free throws to win it. Judd Novak and Brenize also played key minutes for the Barons, Fisher said. Sell led the Barons with 18 points and Marquette added nine.

The Barons lost in a close bout to Lampeter-Strasburg 39-35 on Monday, Jan. 21, in a match that decided the Section Two Champions. The Barons were the two-time defending section champions, so the loss left a bitter taste. It was an even contest, as the teams split matches 7-7, but the Pioneers gained bonus points. “There were some close matches and it was a great atmosphere,” Chamberlain said. “It came down to the last match. The loss hurt, but we didn’t point fingers and we picked each other up. We knew we had Donegal and the league tournament.” Betancourt got things started at 120 with a technical fall (19-4) in 4:39, and in consecutive bouts, Cade and Conner Zeamer each gained pins at 2:32 and 30 seconds, respectively at 132 and 138 pounds. Clay Bedi gained a 12-6 decision at 152 pounds. Sauder (160) and McCord (182) gained falls in 1:26 and 5:16, respectively, and Dougherty (285) added a 9-3 decision to round out Manheim’s scoring. Coming off the tough loss to L-S, Josiah Lutz set the tone in the Barons’ first bout against Donegal, gaining a 9-3 major decision at 113 pounds. This set the tone and led to Manheim winning three of its next four matches as Bentancourt (120), Cade Zeamer (132) and Conner Zeamer (138) each earned pins. The Barons won six of their eight bouts by fall. After losing two bouts in a row, Sauder got the Barons back on track with a fall at 160. McCord collected the fastest pin at 23 seconds in the 195 pound weight class and Mitch Himelright earned a fall at 220 pounds in 2:51. BOWLING Manheim faced a hot team in Elizabethtown, which beat the Barons 7-0 in a non-league match on Tuesday, Jan. 22. In 11 out of 15 individual games the Bears bowled more than 200. The Barons were led by Brandon Henry, who rolled a 580 series. Oren Martin rolled a nice 190 third game, Barons coach Alan Sides said. On the Wednesday, Jan. 23 match, Manheim beat Lebanon Catholic 7-0. The Barons not only rolled their first 900 team game, but shot more than 900 all three games. Henry led the way with a 736

Next, Dr. Sara Place, senior director of sustainable beef production research at the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA), will discuss beef sustainability in her presentation “Beyond the Headlines and Toward the Facts.” Later, Dr. Tara Felix will give an update on Penn State’s CalfFed Project and talk about feed efficiency tools. The meeting will also serve as Beef Quality Assurance recertification for attendees who need to update their certificates. Program Will Offer Courses
R030023
Luther Acres, a Luthercare community, 600 E. Main St., Lititz, will offer a variety of courses through its winter 2019 “reDiscover a World of Possibilities program. All are open to the greater community. Most courses will be held on the Luther Acres campus. Varying fees have been set for campus residents and nonresidents, though some courses are free to attend. What in the World Is SquareFoot Gardening will be led by Luther Acres resident Ruth Lohmeyer on Tuesday, Feb. 19, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Chocolate! Chocolate! Chocolate! will be led by Mark Hoffman on Thursdays, Feb. 7 to 28, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Hoffman will create chocolate dishes. Participants will also receive recipes and enjoy samples. Ballroom Dancing for Beginners will be taught by Gregg and Amber Stief on Wednesdays, Feb. 6 to March 13, from 6 to 7 p.m. The course will cover the basics of the five major ballroom dances: waltz, foxtrot, rhumba, cha-cha and swing. Couples and singles of all ages and abilities are welcome. Ballroom Dancing: Beyond Basics will be taught by Gregg and Amber Stief on Wednesdays, Feb. 6 to March 13, from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. This course will move slightly faster than the beginner course and is geared toward those who have taken the beginner class or are comfortable with the basics of various ballroom dances. Watercolor Painting will be led by artist Andy Smith on Mondays, March 4 to April 8, from 10 a.m. to noon. The class is for beginners and experienced painters. Art supplies will be needed for this course and should be purchased in advance. A trip to the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center in Carlisle will be led by Jeff Hawks on Thursday, Feb. 7. Hawks will share about the center, and participants may explore the galleries on their own. A bus will depart Luther Acres at 8 a.m. and return at about 3:30 p.m. The trip will include a stop for breakfast. A Critical Look at the Role of Religion in Our History will be led by David Myers on Thursdays, Feb. 7 to 28, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Focuses for discussion will include how religion emerged, what impact the discoveries of science have on religious faith, and what impact the life and teachings of Jesus have on the world. Registration is required by Friday, Feb. 1, and space is limited. To register or for more information, including cost, readers may call Luther Acres wellness director Beth Bucher at 717-626-1171, ext. 1691.
