Change is happening at the Home on Ferdinand - both for the guests who stay there and for the people who support them. The transitional home for women and children recently underwent two staffing changes, said Corinna Harnly, board chair of Manheim Community Life Group, the organization that operates the home. Kaitlyn Hill became the home’s director at the beginning of 2024. “She’s been with us since we opened in 2021,” Harnly said, noting that Hill began as the live-in house manager. She’s joined by Regan Young, who just came on board to fill Hill’s former role with some expanded responsibilities. Young is the house and community connections coordinator, and she’ll work in the home to organize volunteers and oversee scheduling as well as connect with businesses, churches and other organizations in the community for fundraising and public relations opportunities. The Home on Ferdinand has also undergone renovations recently. “ We painted and freshened up our basement area to make a kids’ play area,” Harnly said. “We also just finished fundraising for a pantry renovation that will be taking place shortly as we expand and revamp our pantry.” The home can accommodate seven mothers and their children at a time. In 2023, the organization served 14 women and 18 children. “We received 267 calls last year for housing,” Harnly said. “There is a huge need for housing in the area. We averaged five calls a week.”

When tragedy struck, Frey had to decide if she would deny God or glorify Him. Frey attends the Encounter church in Bainbridge and is a mother and grandmother. In this modern version,

History from pg 1 classes, including AP U.S. History as well as History of Leaders and Leadership, participated in the program. The panelists spoke to the students as a whole and then shared personal memorabilia with students one-on-one or in smaller groups. After a brief introduction by each of the panelists, the group asked the students if any had been to Washington, D.C., to see the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Senior Geofferson Sites said he had been, and he recalled being struck by its size. “My first reaction to it was the sheer amount of names on it,” he said. “It was mind boggling. I hadn’t really thought about how many people died.” Junior Kaylee Dougherty asked a question about post-traumatic stress and whether anything triggers the veterans. Kunitsky, who served in the Brown Water Navy in the Mekong Delta, said he reacts to both the sound of helicopters and anytime the Susquehanna River turns brown after a storm. Students inquired about Agent Orange and wondered if any of the panel were tunnel rats, the term for soldiers who cleared and destroyed enemy tunnel complexes. Although much of the presentation was somber, one question did draw a laugh. When asked what he looked forward to most

It’s open to anyone who served on active duty in Vietnam between Nov. 1, 1955, and May 7, 1975, or in any duty location between Aug. 5, 1964, and May, 7, 1975. Preventing carbon monoxide poisoning anything that can burn, should be kept at least 3 feet away from open fires and space heaters. People should ensure their space heaters have been tested to the latest safety standards and certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory. Space heaters should be placed on a level, hard and nonflammable surface, such as ceramic tile floor, not on rugs or carpets or near bedding or drapes. Space heaters should always be plugged directly into electrical outlets; never

use power strips or extension cords, as these may overheat and cause a fire. A space heater should never be left turned on when the home’s occupants are sleeping, and space heaters should not be placed close to any sleeping person. People should always turn off space heaters when they leave the room. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the most common symptoms of CO poisoning are headache, nausea, vomiting,

fatigue, chest pain, weakness, dizziness and confusion. Symptoms mimic flu symptoms, but CO poisoning does not cause a fever. If anyone is experiencing similar symptoms at home, but the symptoms go away when they leave home, they may have CO poisoning; to ensure the person’s safety, 911 should be called.
