As part of Lititz’s monthly Second Friday observance, United Zion Retirement Community (UZRC) will hold regular artist receptions to celebrate the 12 or more artists whose work will be exhibited in the community’s art gallery during 2020. “ We’d like more people to come in and see us,” said Megan Weiss, director of marketing and development with UZRC. “It is a way to give back to the community, and let (area residents) know this art gallery is here for them,” said Weiss, who added that it is also a way to inform UZRC residents about local artists. Receptions will be held on the second Friday of each month at UZRC, 722 Furnace Hills Pike, Lititz, from 5 to 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. According to Alyssa Wojcik, who has been coordinating the gallery of periodically changing exhibits for five years, the Jan. 10 reception, which attracted area residents from outside the community as well as those who live at UZRC, was a success. “We had a resident come to meet (one of the) artists, and then we took her to see his artwork,” said Wojcik. “Things like that make it totally worth it.” Weiss agreed, recalling that the photos brought by the Lancaster Camera Club, which filled the gallery for January, were well received. “(Photographer) Lorraine Light was at the reception,” said Weiss. “It was fun to talk to her. The residents talked to her about composition and light.” Photographer Travis Boyd and artist Nancy Shelly were also at the reception. Boyd brought photos of vintage airplanes and trains, which inspired residents to recall memories of experiences involving those methods of transportation. In February, the artwork of UZRC team members Shelly and Chris Eby is featured in the gallery. Shelly, who has been a receptionist at UZRC for 40 years, is exhibiting paintings done in the fluid art style. Eby, who works in environmental services, is exhibiting illustrations and drawings. The reception will be held on

Friday, Feb. 14. The Friday, March 13, reception is scheduled to feature the fine art of Chris Gold, known for her landscapes, botanical wildlife, and paintings that include a surreal twist. On Friday, April 10, the art of Mary Kopola and the photography of Dave Adams will be displayed. The Friday, May 8, reception will be held for fine artist David Gibson, and on Friday, June 12, for returning artist Lillie Fernbeck. On Friday, July 10, the work of Jeremy Miller, liturgical artist, who draws inspiration from historic Christian symbolism, will be featured. On Friday, Aug. 14, the photography of Jennifer Cavalcante, whose work is so vividly hued, that it sometimes resembles a painting, will be displayed. On Friday, Sept. 11, Kathryn Reis, known mostly for working in pastels, will bring her creations to UZRC, and on Friday, Oct. 9, artist Suze Moll will share her creativity with reception attendees. On Friday, Nov. 13, Catherine Herbert, who likes to express the beauty of nature through art, will exhibit, and on Friday, Dec. 11, photographer Nick Wetzel, who is dedicated to capturing the beauty of animals in their natural habitats, will bring his work to display. The works of each artist will be in the UZRC gallery, which is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., throughout the designated month. Weiss noted that she hopes those who visit the receptions and the gallery will see how the facility has been updated recently. “We have been here 115 years, and we had so many changes last year with the renovations in our common spaces for residential living and personal care,” she said, noting that an upcoming construction project is due to begin on Wednesday, April 1. “We want people to know where we are and see how much we’ve changed,” shared Weiss, who noted that UZRC will hold its annual Chocolate Stroll on Saturday, Feb. 22, and an open house in the fall. More information about UZRC may be found by visiting www.uzrc.org.

maid working at the motel, interrupts to deliver his coffee. A conversation ensues examining King’s achievements, failures, and unfinished dreams. Patterson said “The Mountaintop” will likely challenge audience members’ preconceived ideas about King and who he was. “It’s going to be a mixture of how Katori Hall and (SSC director) Jim Johnson view him and an exploration between Pilisa and myself,” described Patterson. “If we’re doing our jobs right, people are going to leave wrestling with the work about (King) and his story.” That the timing of the play coincides with February being Black History Month is a mixed bag for Patterson. “It’s a blessing and a curse,” said Patterson. “It’s great to have the opportunity to take the month that is nationally recognized as Black History Month and participate in (a play) that recognizes something so historically relevant, but it’s also a thing where you go, ‘Had to be in February, huh?’ But it’s a great start.” “I celebrate Black History Month every month, but I definitely do really go a little more extra for February,” Mackey remarked. “I really like the idea that it’s written by a black playwright because I want to be about that. It does paint a really great picture of Martin Luther King that is not whitewashed.” As for the character of Camae, Mackey describes her as “unapologetically black.” “I love that. I relate to that 100%,” she shared. “I definitely identify with the pride and the dignity that she takes in being a black

woman, especially in a time that black women were treated like dirt.” “She really embodies the three different prevailing stereotypes of black women: the mammy, the jezebel, and the sapphire,” continued Mackey. “Camae has to be the caregiver and also she has that sensuality about her, but then at the same time she can be sassy and loud. I’m hoping I can incorporate all of those and then transcend into actual humanity.” “I like that she is not shy about each element of those stereotypes, but ultimately she doesn’t let them define all that she is,” Mackey stated. “It’s almost like she overcomes each of them as she plays into them, in a sense.” Mackey hopes that audiences will leave reminded of the importance of activism - regardless of how unglamorous taking a stand may be. “I think this show should be a reminder that activists are human,” said Mackey. “This work is not easy and it’s not quick, but it is ultimately worth it to take a stand for what you believe in for justice.” Interested individuals may purchase tickets at www.susque hannastageco.com or at the box office prior to each performance. Separate ticket prices have been set for adults and for students under age 18.

Theater To Provide Educational Program Gretna Theatre is producing and touring “No Easy Road to Freedom,” a one-hour play that celebrates the importance of diversity and inclusion in America’s history. During February, the educational show is being performed at local schools and retirement communities. Gretna Theatre is known for its summer productions, but it concentrates on educational outreach efforts during the offseason. Gretna Theatre tours four different social and curriculumbased productions each year. “No Easy Road to Freedom” is an educational show that uses

problems.” Countless examples of thriving social enterprises exist locally and globally, and Ciocirlan cited the Grameen Bank founded by social entrepreneur, banker, and economist Muhammad Yunus in Bangladesh as one of those. “That bank focused on giving small loans to female entrepreneurs in Bangladesh, and with those small loans they could build a business for themselves,” Ciocirlan explained. “The main difference between a social enterprise and a charity is that a charity gives away things without offering any compensation, but social enterprises actually charge a price for the good,” Ciocirlan described. “It’s the idea that (people) could use entrepreneurship to make the community or the environment better.” At camp, students will take a field trip to a local social enterprise to see the concept in action and ask questions. Another visit will be made to a local business accelerator and incubator to show campers first-hand about another avenue available for launching and growing a business. Ciocirlan noted that accelerators work with existing businesses to take their businesses to the next level, while incubators help entrepreneurs as they move from idea to launch. Campers will receive instruction on how to develop, refine, and test business ideas; how to create a business plan; how to market and finance an enterprise; and how to persuade people that their idea is worth pursuing. Students will form small teams to research

needs and develop an idea for a social enterprise. They will work toward presenting a live pitch on their projects to a team of judges in a friendlier “Shark Tank”-style format. Elizabethtown College offers both a minor and a concentration in entrepreneurship. Ciocirlan noted that the concept of social enterprise beautifully complements the college’s motto of “Educate for Service.” “Basically, this model says that we should use our knowledge and skills to benefit community,” summarized Ciocirlan. Lodging for the week will give students the opportunity to experience a taste of campus life as two students will be assigned to a room in the adult-chaperoned residence halls. Meals will be served in the all-you-can-eat college cafeteria. Evenings will allow time for recreation for campers with outdoor games, board games, movies, and more. The Bowers Center for Sports, Fitness, and Well-Being will be open for use, including the swimming pool. Registration for the camp is now open at www.etown.edu/ entrepreneur. An early bird discount rate with coupon code EARLYBIRD is available to anyone who applies by Sunday, March 1. Discounted rates are also available to children of Elizabethtown College alumni, faculty, and staff with coupon code BLUEJAY. Graduates of the camp will receive a $1,000 scholarship, renewable for four years, to attend Elizabethtown College.

The Northern Lancaster County Regional Police Department (NLCRPD) reminds drivers in remote areas to obey signs designating certain roadways as having no winter maintenance. Drivers of four-wheeldrive and regular vehicles may find themselves without assistance in the event of unexpected trouble if they disregard the signage and enter these areas when snow is forecast or is already covering the ground. The NLCRPD has several roadways in areas posted in this manner within the NLCRPD primary jurisdiction. These roadways are generally township-maintained roadways approaching or located within

funds for a number of local organizations. Admission buttons, which are necessary to attend the contest, may be purchased at the Lititz Stauffers of Kissel Hill, Bomberger’s, and Dosie Dough, as well as at the high school during the event. Buttons may also be purchased by searching for “Lititz Fire & Ice Chili Cook-off ” at www.eventbrite.com. Only 1,500 admission buttons will be sold. About 30 food trucks will offer a variety of foods for purchase, including burgers, barbecue, kettle corn, funnel cakes, and french fries. The trucks will line Broad Street all the way to Water Street. To alleviate congestion, organizers have designated shuttle locations at Grace Church on Lincoln Avenue, Victory Church on Newport Road, and Kissel Hill Elementary School on Landis Valley Road. There will be a nominal price per carload to ride the shuttle. Shuttles will run from 4:30 to 10 p.m. on Feb. 14 and from 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Feb. 15. MC Rifle Squad Captures League Tourney Crown By Eric G. Stark

The Barons’ sharpshooters picked a good time to get hot. Completing a 13-1 record last week with a 496-489 win against Conestoga Valley, Manheim won the Lancaster-Lebanon League’s regular season crown and took home the hardware from the league tournament as well with a team score of 993 with 14 centers. It was their first league tournament win since the 2015-16 season. In the past 17 seasons, this is their 10th regular season crown. They last won the regular season title in 20172018 and have won six times in the last nine years. That 2016 tourney champ had a team score of 992 with nine centers. The Barons placed first and second and had three of the top seven shooters in the tournament. A fourth Baron placed 11th. To say Manheim shot well is an understatement. Out of a possible 1,000 points, the Barons only dropped seven points. In the last three weeks, MC shooters have raised their game. “Honestly, it feels awesome, because they did their job,” Barons’ coach Steve Waddington said. “I’m thrilled.” Anna Haldeman continued her

white-hot shooting by capturing the individual title, beating out her teammate Gage McCabe, a senior, who thought he had the title locked up. McCabe posted a tremendous first round score - 200 with three centers. Late in his round of shooting, he pulled his eye back from his scope and reflected for a moment, “This is my last shot on the Manheim Central rifle team.” Then he refocused and finished firing off one of the best rounds in league tournament history. His name sat on top of the leader board all morning into the afternoon. Then Haldeman, one of last shooters slated, fired an historical round 200 with six centers. Each shooter had perfect scores and it came down to how many center bullseyes. The previous high mark in the tourney was a 200 with four centers. “I thought, great, he’ll (McCabe) be first place,” Waddington said. “And then Anna shoots. That’s insane.” Haldeman, a sophomore, was shooting 98s, 99s at the beginning of the season, but has been locked-in since the students returned to school in January. She shot four 100 scores in January and had a 100 in February. Last year she had three 100 scores and a 98.14 average. Last year she was the No. 6 shooter. This year she was No.1. “I told Gage you did your job today

and you tip your cap,” he said. “Anna shot extremely well.” Also shooting well was Hunter Shoop, who notched a 199 with one center. The senior placed seventh. Shoop missed one shot he wished he had back, Waddington said. Ellie McCabe registered a 198 with three centers to place 11th. Four Baron shooters made the top 10 L-L League All-Stars. Haldeman was named the top league all-star with a 99.42 average, highest in the league. Shoop was fifth on the AllStar team with a 99.17 average. Gage McCabe was sixth at 99.08 and Ellie McCabe was ninth in the league with a 98.292 average. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The Lady Barons lost a 63-62 heartbreaker Thursday, Feb. 6 in a Lancaster-Lebanon League tournament play-in game against Pequea Valley at Garden Spot High School. Manheim had the ball with a chance to take the lead late in the game, but turned the ball over on a traveling violation, allowing the Braves to run out the clock. Maddie Knier, who had a gamehigh 20 points, hit a 3-pointer just

before the end of the third quarter to put the Barons ahead 56-51. MC was leading 58-51 before the Braves mounted a comeback. Kassidy Michael’s jumper put the Barons back on top 62-61 with 1:31 remaining, but that was MC’s last basket of the game. Barons’ coach Tyson Hayes believes he and his team will learn from this loss. “I told them how much they mean to us and that I let them down with our defensive game plan,” Hayes said. “We still have district playoffs and we, as players and coaches, are going to get better.” Senior Laura Good, scored 15 points and Michael added 14. The District Three Tournament begins Tuesday, Feb. 18. On Tuesday, Feb. 4 Manheim lost 51-46 to Cocalico. The Eagles used a big third quarter, to outscore the Barons 13-3 to pull away. Photo by Vaughn Brown Knier led all scorers with 22 points. The Barons’ Maddie Knier hits a jumper over Cocalico’s Olivia Good chipped in with 10 points. was a leader in every facet. “Guys looked up to him,” he said. “He did all the little things, but what he gave us most was leadership, a big brother. Without him we don’t win 10 games, and that’s from a guy who averaged two points.” BOWLING On Senior Night Wednesday, Feb. 5 Manheim beat Lebanon Catholic 7-0. Senior Brandon Henry rolled a 621. Austin Howard, a senior, had a 212 game and a 568 series. Joey Noble had a nice 203 game. The junior varsity side, Ethan Howard rolled games of 201, 211, 145 for a 557 series. Jesse Hurst rolled a 197 game. Barons’ coach Alan Sides said Henry, a solid anchor and team captain, was the squad’s MVP. Henry, a two-year starter, had a 189 average and improved 26 pins from the end of last season. Noble was a first-year bowler and a pleasant surprise, Sides said. Noble had a 178 average as the Barons’ lead-off bowler. Oren Martin rolled a solid 161 average. He also had the team-high game for the year, 298.The last senior, John Greenwald, who as a second-year year bowler, averaged a 145 on varsity, bowled most of the year on JV, but was a more than capable fill in when called upon, Sides said. “I had a great group of seniors, and an awesome group of bowlers overall,” Sides said. “It was a great and successful season with a great group of kids.” The Lancaster-Lebanon League

ond off her personal best in the 100 breaststroke. BOYS’ BASKETBALL It was sweet revenge and a great way to end their season. Sensational freshman Trey Grube took a pass from Judd Novak and nailed a 3-pointer from the right wing as time expired for a 49-46 victory over Cocalico Tuesday, Feb. 4. On Jan. 17, the Eagles beat the Barons on a last second shot. With no timeouts and the game tied, Barons’ coach Charlie Fisher said he was confident in his guys getting a good shot. “It was not a set play. The guys just needed to do what they do,” Fisher said. “Judd knows to attack and Trey knows where to be. Trey moved to his right and hit it. They guys executed the play.” For Grube, who had four points, the basket was his league-leading 58th 3-pointer on the season. Cam Eberly led the Barons with 17 points. The Barons, who finished with a 10-12 record, missed the league and district playoffs by one game. Manheim battled in close games all season. In 16 of 22 games, the Barons had a lead in the fourth quarter. One game went to overtime and they lost. One game they lost with one second left and another was a buzzer beater loss. “It was crazy,” Fisher admits. “Six games where we had a chance.” But he said he is blown away by his players’ progress this season with only one senior. They started the season bringing back 50 points from last year’s team. Next year they will bring back 1,100 points. Seven Barons scored in double figures at least once this season. Grube led the team with a 12.3 average, followed by Eberly (9.6), Novak (7) and Wyatt Becker (6). The lone senior is Grube’s older brother, Jayce Grube, who Fisher said

personal best times at the LancasterLebanon League Tournament at Wilson High School on FridaySaturday, Feb. 7-8. Ten of her 20 swimmers were seniors and swam for her for the last time. They saved their best swims for the last time they’d swim for the Barons. “I am very proud of them,” Fittery said. “I’ve coached some of them since they were eight years old and younger in the summer program and now through high school. I had a great group of kids this year.” Senior Max Gehman earned a medal with his sixth place finish in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22:19. He also finished 10th overall in the 100 free (50.14). He qualified for districts Feb. 16-17 at Cumberland Valley in Class 2A in these events. Gehman, who swam as a sophomore but did not swim as a junior, uses his 6-foot-6 frame to his advantage in the pool. His long arms and legs help him in the sprint events, said Fitttery, who added that she’s glad to have him back this season. He was also a member of the 200 medley team that posted a 1:40.12, dropping a little more than a second off their best time. Their previous best swim was a 1:41.32. The team also consists of Luke Weaver, Ethan Harner and Wyatt Kupres. Harner, a senior, dropped a second for a new personal best in the 100 backstroke On the girls’ side, sophomore Olivia Faulhaber swam personal bests in the 50 and 100 freestyles. Her 50 free was a half second faster than her seeded time. Her 100 free broke the one minute mark at 59.11, helping her reach a goal she set before the season. Senior McKayla Miller took off three seconds in the 100 backstroke. Kaylin Jury, a senior, dropped a sec-

Working in food service involves much more than asking “Would you like fries with that? Food service workers may be employed in grocery stores, retirement communities, schools, office building cafeterias, restaurants, and anywhere else that qualifies as a retail food establishment as defined by law. One of the top priorities of all food service workers is to keep consumers safe. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has created a model food code, which is updated every four years, and states can create their own based on the model. According to Penn State Extension, the FDA Food Code provides updated science-based guidance and recommendations on how to handle food safely in order to reduce or prevent foodborne illnesses. Until recently, the FDA Food Code required that one person within a food service operation be a Certified Food Protection Manager. The new update, announced in February 2018, now requires that the person in charge of a facility be certified. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA), which oversees the state’s food code and the Food Employee Certification Act, adopted the update and declared the change in certified managers to go into effect in 2020. “We have research from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention that shows when we have a (certified) person on duty at all times, the risk of foodborne illness is reduced, said Stacy Reed, senior extension educator with Penn State Extension. “Prevention of foodborne

illness is a big deal. About 48 million people get sick (from a foodborne illness) each year, and that leads to over 128,000 being hospitalized. That means one out of every six people will get sick from a foodborne illness (annually). An estimated 3,000 people pass away from a foodborne illness every year. Until the latest change, retail food facilities were required to have a Certified Food Protection Manager available during inspection, even if it was just someone who could go to the facility when called. With the new requirement that the person in charge - for example, a shift manager be certified, more people will need to have their certifications. “We’re trying to be proactive and making people aware of these amendments so that we have plenty of people that are certified, Reed said. Certification must be renewed every five years. PDA recognizes manager certification programs offered by five organizations. Penn State Extension offers local classes for the PDA-approved ServSafe program from the National Restaurant Association (NRA). The classes are typically held in groups of two, with one week separating them. A proctored exam is offered at the end of the second day, and a score

of 75% or higher is required to receive a certificate. Exams may be taken four times in one year, but they must be spaced out according to the association’s guidelines. “Our food safety and quality professionals are highly educated in food safety, Reed remarked. “We can provide reallife information and update you on all the changes and regulations. We have advanced professional knowledge and experience; we are professional educators. The ServSafe course is also available online and may be completed at an individual’s convenience. The exam must be taken in person, however. Accommodations for people with disabilities are available through the NRA. Sometimes accommodations might include having more time to complete an exam or having the exam read aloud by someone without a food safety background. “There are ways (we) will work with individuals to help them succeed, Reed said. Exams are available in English as well as Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, French Canadian, and large-print English. Classes taught in Spanish are available in Kennett Square, although Reed noted that she has a bilingual program assistant who

can teach the class in Spanish in Lancaster. Anyone who is interested in food safety is welcome to take a ServSafe course. “We have a lot of individuals who take the class who are just interested in food safety, (as well as) volunteers or people interested in the possibility of a career change, Reed said. “I know a lot of employers do value certification, to the point that they will send large groups of employees to classes at one time. Along with potentially helping someone obtain a job in food service, the ServSafe program provides valuable knowledge for use in other contexts too. “It’s information that you can apply even at home so that (you can) make sure you are preparing food safely for your family or (when you are) volunteering in the community, Reed commented. Information about the ServSafe Food Safety Program and upcoming classes is available at https://extension.psu.edu/ servsafe. Individuals with questions may call the Penn State Extension office at 877-345-0691 on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition to seeking workers who display a commitment to food safety, employers are looking for food service workers with the following skills: - Communication skills - Ability to work in a team - Attention to detail - Friendly personality - Patience - Ability to multitask and solve problems

Participants are free to bring their own mat, but one is not necessary for the class. There will be five total sessions for the first round of this program.
