Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS) will hold its annual banquet at a new location this year. The fundraising gathering will take place at Landis Hall at WJTL’s Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim, on Friday, March 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. REYS’ executive director, Joel Hughes, explained that the growth of the annual event over the last several years indicated a need for a larger setting. “The Junction Center gives that opportunity for a new venue with updated facilities,” he said. Hughes anticipates that the Junction Center will have room for the many guests who will want to hear this year’s keynote speakers, Jay and Laura Laffoon. “Jay and Laura are well-known for their conferences and are experienced speakers for youthfocused organizations,” Hughes noted. He explained that last year’s keynote speaker successfully combined comedy and inspiration, so the Laffoons were an obvious choice for the 2019 banquet due to their experience in family ministry and ability to share in a humorous style. “We want everyone to have good fun!” Hughes said. The community is invited to

celebrate the ministry of REYS by joining the board, staff members, and volunteers at the banquet, which will include a familystyle dinner featuring local favorites of hamloaf, chicken, potatoes, vegetables, and dessert. Complimentary tickets for the event are available by calling the youth center at 717-653-9511 or emailing office@reys.org. Reservations are requested by Friday, March 15. The program will begin at 6 p.m. with dinner, testimonies, and a new ministry video designed to offer guests a snapshot of the ministry and needs of REYS. Hughes noted that his hopes for the event are that REYS’ mission to impact youths for life will be clearly communicated, that the REYS support base will expand as guests hear the annual ministry update from the board and staff, and that volunteers will be encouraged to continue to reach out in Christian love to local youths. The Laffoons will speak at 7 p.m. According to https://jayand laura.com, Jay and Laura met on a blind date 35 years ago and married shortly thereafter. Over the years they have gained insights into youths and marriage as they ministered with Youth for Christ and interviewed countless couples. They founded Celebrate

Plus Easing the Discomfort of Plantar Fasciitis Ten years ago, stabbing plantar fasciitis pain began in Brenda’s foot. She had physical therapy which helped a little, but the pain persisted. “I was limited on type of shoes I could wear,â€? she recalled, “and I couldn’t walk too long while out shopping.â€? To make matters worse, she developed a frozen shoulder. “It felt just like somebody punched me in the shoulder,â€? Brenda reported. She couldn’t use her shoulder without aggravating it, which meant no cooking and no lifting. “I needed to take over-the-counter pain relievers just to sleep,â€? she said. Brenda saw an ad in the Merchandiser for MLS Laser Therapy at Brennan Chiropractic and thought to herself, “That could work for me!â€? She attended Dr. Brennan’s free class. “MLS Laser Therapy is unique because it treats both pain and inammation simultaneously,â€? explained Dr. Brennan. “The MLS Laser works by sending photons of light deep into damaged tissue, which recharge and stimulate the cells. The cells of tendons, ligaments and muscles repair themselves faster, and ‘kickstart’ the healing process.â€? Brenda remarked, “That’s when I decided that I was getting this done.â€? Though lasers have been in use for over 35 years, MLS Laser Therapy is a noninvasive, drug-free, state-of-the-art breakthrough in restoring patient mobility, with no known side effects. In just one 15 minute comfortable treatment, patients suffering from a variety of musculoskeletal disorders, including degenerative joint conditions and sports injuries, are on their way to relief. “Dr. Brennan and his staff are wonderful and accommodating. We treated my shoulder ďŹ rst, and I purposely took no pain medication. After the ďŹ rst MLS Laser treatment, I thought it might be my imagination, but my shoulder felt pretty darn good. Each time I had a laser treatment I felt better and better. I no longer take over-the-counter pain medication!â€? Brenda exclaimed. “Now I don’t even think about my shoulder. For the ďŹ rst time in 10 years, I’m wearing sandals and I can even walk barefoot. It’s amazing!â€?

The choir will sing several selections, and during one song, the vocal group will be joined by alumna and soloist Julie Stone. Additionally, junior Joey Engle will deliver an oration, which he composed last year for a school competition. “My oration is (on the topic that) capitalism is the best economic system; it rewards individualism,” Joey said. “I’m pretty nervous (about speaking to a large group of people). The Train Guys - a group of local model railroad enthusiasts who set up the annual holiday train display in Elizabethtown Public Library recently presented library officials with a check for $11,750. The monies were donated during the train display in December. A record number of more than 4,600 people visited the exhibit. The Train Guys coordinated all aspects of the setup and ran the trains three or more days per week during December. In addition to collecting donations for the library, the Train Guys sold a limited number of custom model freight cars. “Over the last 16 years, (the train display) has brought joy to young and old alike who dream of trains while also helping us with our mission of increasing literacy in the community,” said Marian Fetter, chairperson of the library board. the Millport Conservancy for use in future projects. “We will have thousands of trees to plant (in buffers) in the next three or four years, Kutz said. “Even after all the flooding we had this year, the (creek banks) where we planted are still there. The others are blown out, fundraising committee chair Ruth Roulston reported. The group is thankful to have received grants to cover the costs of its work. However, there are expenses involved in operating the chapter. Fundraising committee co-chair Barry Witmer noted that when new members join, a portion of their membership dues stays local, while the remainder goes to the national organization. Thereafter, the entirety of a member’s dues is paid directly to Trout Unlimited. Exclusive of conservation projects, DTU’s yearly operating budget averages to $33,000. The budget includes facility rental fees, speakers’ fees, sponsorships for youths to attend conservation camps, training and supplies for the Trout in the Classroom program, tree nursery stock and planting supplies, printed materials, and costs associated with fundraising.

The annual banquet and auction is DTU’s largest fundraiser. This year’s affair will be held on Saturday, March 16, from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at the DoubleTree Resort by Hilton, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster. Hors d’oeuvres will be served, and the plated dinner will include a chicken entrÊe, salad, potatoes, vegetables, and dessert. Live and silent auctions will be held throughout the evening. Trips to Montana, Spring Creek, and the Potomac River, as well as tuna fishing and skiing, will be up for bids along with golf passes, themed baskets, dinners at two private homes, fishing gear, jewelry, artwork, perfume, and items for infants and children. Witmer will offer an apple pie for sale as well. Additionally, a collectible fly tied by Tom Herr in memory of soldiers killed in Afghanistan has been donated for the auction; the work is so intricate that it took 17 hours to complete. A cost has been set to attend the banquet, and tickets must be reserved by Tuesday, March 5, by contacting Witmer at b.witmer@ donegaltu.org or 717-380-0281. Donegal Trout Unlimited from pg 1 work the group is doing is necessary to the health of Lancaster County’s streams and waterways, as well as larger bodies of water like the Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay. “We’ve spent approximately $3.5 million in about seven years on stream restoration projects, said Bob Kutz, co-chair of DTU’s conservation committee, board member, and fundraising committee member. “Through these

projects, we’ve greatly reduced the sediment going into the Conowingo Pond. DTU is one of 53 chapters of Trout Unlimited in the state. The chapter was started in 1967 with about a dozen members and was named for its original meeting location. Now, more than 750 people are members of DTU, and the organization holds board meetings at the Millport Conservancy in Lititz and general meetings at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster. The group first worked on restoring Donegal Springs and Donegal Creek, and its work has spread throughout the county. The restoration completed on Lititz Run has become nationally known, said fundraising committee member Vicki Wilson. Currently, DTU has projects in process on Fishing Creek in southern Lancaster County. As a result of the group’s efforts, streambanks are holding their shape, water temperatures are dropping, and aquatic life is thriving. “A buffer of 100 feet filters out all pollutants, Kutz explained, adding that hardwood trees planted in riparian buffers even a few dozen feet wide make an impact on streambank stability. The play was chosen as this year’s spring musical by director Max Hunsicker. “I base my choice on the students I will have and try to play to their strengths, he explained. “It fit the group I was going to have this year. Also, it was more of a classic-style musical than our last several shows, ‘Les Mis’ and ‘Shrek.’ Hunsicker said that audiences might recognize several of the musical numbers, including “Hernando’s Hideaway, “Steam Heat and “Hey There, noting that the MCHS version is based on the original Broadway play, not the recent revival with Harry Connick Jr. The lead characters said they had never heard of the play before, so they arranged a viewing party to watch the 1950s movie version of “The Pajama Game that starred Doris Day and John Raitt.

“Watching the movie was helpful because it helped me relate to my character and pick up some of the quirks that she has that I incorporated into my acting skills to make the character seem more real, said Nina, who will portray Babe on March 14 and 16. “You can see some of the emotions (during the movie) and how they were played out, and it showed how the scenes were supposed to flow, added Paul, who will portray Sid on March 15 and 17. The male leads said the most challenging aspect of the play is some of the musical numbers. “The hardest part was learning the music and getting comfortable with some of the ranges, said Taylor, who will portray Sid on March 14 and 16. “For a male tenor some of the songs for Sid are in the upper range, so

it’s hard hitting those high notes. “For me, ‘Hey There’ is the most challenging, said Paul. “It’s a solo and there are a couple of challenging notes, but Taylor and I have been practicing, so we’ll be ready when the play comes around. Rehearsals began on Jan. 3 and are currently being held on weekdays, with the exception of Wednesdays. “Mondays and Tuesdays are dedicated to dance rehearsal, Taylor noted. “We had at least five (weatherrelated) cancellations, so we’ve been pushing through it. All seats are reserved, and there will be separate prices for students and adults. Tickets may be purchased at the door or during the advance ticket sales nights, which will be on Mondays, March 4 and 11, and Tuesday, March 12, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the high school lobby.

Betancourt Wins Third District 3 Crown By Eric G. Stark

In the great history of Manheim Central wrestling, Will Betancourt achieved something no other grappler had done in the storied past of the program. According to head Coach Billy Chamberlain, Betancourt, a talented junior, is the Barons’ first three-time District Three champion, after winning gold Saturday, Feb. 23 at HersheyPark Arena. Betancourt, a Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two All-Star, won the Class 3A District crown at 120 pounds, beating Northeastern’s Cole Wilson, 3-0 in the final. The wrestlers were scoreless after the first period, before Betancourt pulled away. “Will wrestled extremely well,” Chamberlain said. “He started as the aggressor and never stopped. He completely dominated his match. He didn’t give up a point the entire tournament.” The Barons ended districts in sixth place in the team standings out of 56 teams and placed five wrestlers. Besides Betancourt’s first place, Cade Zeamer took home a fourth place medal, Conner Zeamer earned a fifth place title and Keegan McCord and Tyler Dougherty fought back in the tourney for sixth place honors. The top four places move on to the PIAA Class 3A State Tournament.

Betancourt and Cade Zeamer advance for the Barons. It was a good showing for Manheim. At one point the Barons were four-for-four in the quarterfinals, capped by 285-pounder Doughtery winning 5-1 over Harrisburg’s Jeffery Chisholm-Wilkerson. Worth noting, Austin Sauder, who was one of Manheim’s hotter wrestler’s heading into districts, lost a wild 13-10 decision in the first round at 160 pounds. Conner Zeamer fought back from trailing 8-1 to pin Cumberland Valley’s Jake McKenzie in the 138 pound first round match. Cade Zeamer notched his 100th career victory when he won his 132 pound first round match, a 7-2 decision. “Everyone wrestled extremely tough,” Chamberlain said. “I thought we showed a lot of heart and grit.” Guys like Sauder, who didn’t medal, bounced back from an early loss and gained a 5-2 decision over Daniel Boone’s Quinn Foley in the 160 wrestlebacks. McCord, after suffering a tough semis loss, earned a pin in 23 seconds in the 182-pound wrestlebacks. Cade Zeamer reached the semifinals with a hard-fought 2-1 decision over Cumberland Valley’s Cade Reichart at 132 pounds. He lost his next match, but Chamberlain was impressed with the way his talented

senior wrestled. “Cade Zeamer stayed on his offense the entire tournament,” Chamberlain said. “He bounced back from a hard semis loss to punch his ticket for States. He kept a calm and collected mentality the entire tournament.” McCord lost his fifth place bout at 182 on a fall at 2:15 and Dougherty lost his fifth place bout, 2-1 at 285 pounds. Cade Zeamer lost a close 3-2 decision in his third place bout at 132. It was in the semifinals that several Barons got tripped up. Besides Betancourt, who continued his dominance with a pin 1:23 into his match, Cade Zeamer suffered an 8-2 loss, Conner Zeamer lost 4-0 at 138 and Dougherty took a technical fall (19-3) at 285. To their credit, the three grapplers that lost all fought back in wrestlebacks to take medals home. Manheim entered the weekend advancing six grapplers from District Three Class 3A Sectionals into districts. The top four places advanced to districts and Manheim finished second in the team standings. One of the most impressive showings was Sauder at 160. He was seeded seventh, but won his weight class. Senior Josiah Lutz and freshman

Dakoda Thomas both lost in matches that would have qualified them for the district tourney, but based on rankings, Chamberlain said, both exceeded expectations. Thomas finished fifth and Lutz sixth. “I thought we wrestled a real good sectional tournament,” Chamberlain said. “The goal is to survive to the next tournament. I’ve seen guys finish fourth in sectionals and win districts or win sectionals and lose early at districts.” Because of illness with two wrestlers, only 12 Baron wrestlers entered the Hempfield Sectional, making advancing six grapplers is even more impressive and Manheim crowned four champions. Eight out of 12 wrestlers took home medals. Betancourt, Cade Zeamer, Sauder and Dougherty won their weight classes. It was Betancourt’s third consecutive sectional title and he earned his 100th victory in the semifinals. Conner Zeamer earned a silver medal at 138 and McCord gained a third place finish with a pin that gained him his 100th career victory, which was split between Donegal and Manheim Central Schools Districts. “Conner is just a gamer,” Chamberlain said. “He just loves going out and having fun. He is just a crazy

wrestler. It is fun to watch him go out there and let loose.” The coach added that Dougherty’s finals win came by beating a wrestler who beat him last year. This year Dougherty pinned him. “It is neat to see the strides he’s made to beat a guy that beat him previously,” said Chamberlain, who was most impressed with the way Cade Zeamer wrestled. “He had the mentality that I’m here to win,” he said. “He was going to show you that this is my mat. He was very smooth. I like where his head is right now.” Chamberlain said he was looking

forward to the postseason and said even though the Barons had a lot of success last year, winning the section and league tournament, he believes he might be more proud of the kids this year. “The kids are starting to realize their potential, and not just as wrestlers,” Chamberlain said, “but as better men off the mat.” Manheim had a strong showing in the Junior Varsity District Tournament Feb. 9, where two Barons were runner’s up. Owen Von Stetton was second at 182 pounds and Brandon Kheuangthierrath was second at 120. Zac Melhorn was

MERCHANDISER - Manheim Central Edition fourth at 138. Post season accolades keep coming for Manheim, as five wrestlers Betancourt, Cade Zeamer, Sauder, McCord and Dougherty - earned Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two First Team All-Star honors. Conner Zeamer and Lutz were Second- and Third-Team, respectively. BOWLING Lauren Michael finished 28th out of 35 bowlers in the District Three Bowling championship Saturday, Feb. 23 at ABC Lanes North in Harrisburg. Michael, who had a six-game average of 975, started off strong and finished strong with a game six 181, but struggled in the middle games, rolling a 140 in game three, for example. “She finished well,” coach Alan Sides said about his talented junior. “Overall, I am very proud of how she did.” Michael and Brandon Henry, a junior, will compete in the Regional Tournament Friday, March 1. The girls’

tourney is at Clearview Lanes and the boys’ tourney is at Leisure Lanes. Henry and Michael have been busy bowlers. On Wednesday, Feb. 13 Michael competed in a five-game girls’ singles qualifier tournament at Clearview Lanes. Henry, Oren Martin and Austin Howard competed in the boys’ singles tourney at Leisure Lanes on Friday, Feb. 15. Michael performed well in her first game with a 166, hitting her mark, Sides said, but everything went down hill after that, rolling in the 130s and a last game 144, he said, adding that she struggled with lane conditions. Luckily, Michael qualified for districts because she ranked in the top 15 league bowlers. Unlike Michael, who tailed off after her first game, Henry took off after struggling in his first two games, highlighted by rolling a 212 in his fourth game to help elevate him into the second round of the tournament. In the next round he finished in the 190s, well off the mark to move on. Henry advanced to districts by ranking

24th with a 195 league average. Sides said Martin and Howard did well in their first two games and then both struggled and their seasons ended in the tourney. “Oren did better than I expected,” Sides said about Martin’s season. “Austin came on strong at the end of season.” Looking back on the regular season, Henry bowled 214-205-192 for a 611 series and Martin had a 489 series, way above his average, but it still wasn’t enough in a 5-2 loss to Lancaster Catholic on Tuesday, Feb. 5. Martin, a junior whose average game is a 127, had games of 145, 177 and 167. Howard, also a junior, had a 191 game and a 537 series. He averages a 167, so all three of his games were above his average.

On Thursday, Feb. 7 the Barons beat Conestoga Valley 5-2. Henry rolled a 547 and Howard had a 533, highlighted by his first game 244. “In reality, we bowled less than I expected,” Sides said. “We could have bowled better, but we did enough to win. The first two games we were over average, but the last game we struggled.” On Friday, Feb. 8 the Barons lost to Elco 7-0. Martin had a 473 series and Henry a 543 to lead the Barons. One Baron showing great improvement was John Greenwald, a junior who averages about 119, had a 363 Photo by Vaughn Brown series. Junior varsity bowler Cole Shontz, in the varsity match, rolled a Manheim’s Conner Carvell spins out to reverse Penn Manor’s 341, well above his average. Adrian Cole Shenk during a 170-pound, first-round bout in the sectional Ryan rolled a 360 series. He normally tournament at Hempfield on February 15. averages abut 100 per game.

When Emily Kline and Melissa Faller, the founders of Emme Dance Collective, work together to create a dance concert, they consider who might be in the audience. “When we create a show, we think of the dad in the audience who may not understand it,” said Kline. “We want them to leave entertained,” she added. “If they were entertained, we feel we have accomplished something.” With that goal in mind, Kline and Faller plan to present “Bring Into Being,” the debut dance concert that will showcase the style and aesthetic associated with their contemporary company. The pieces in the show, which will be presented on Saturday, March 2, at 7:30 p.m. at the Leffler Chapel

and Performance Center at Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown, will all be choreographed by Kline and Faller. The pieces will be performed by 10 company dancers, two apprentices, and a few students of Kline and Faller. According to Faller, “Bring Into Being” is designed to introduce Emme Dance Collective to the community. Kline noted, “We thought we’d create a show that (demonstrates to the audience) who we are … as artists and as choreographers.” The show will include a mixture of new pieces and those created in the recent past. Kline pointed out that the nine pieces that will be included in the show will be performed in the style of contemporary dance, which includes techniques that pull from

modern dance. “I would describe it as moving in the moment,” she said, adding that the music will be current and contemporary and even include lyrics. Faller added, “We try not to use music that is mainstream or recognizable because we’re trying to create something new, fresh, and different.” Kline noted that dances for the family-friendly show have been kept intentionally short so that the performance moves quickly. Costuming will include a variety of earth tones and jewel tones, and Faller described the dances as quick moving and engaging. “Our choreography could be described as colorful and upbeat,” said Kline. Faller and Kline, who first met when they attended school together in Manheim Township School District at the age of 6, both took lessons at a local dance studio and, following graduation, majored in dance at DeSales University in Center Valley. “In (college), we concentrated on different areas,” explained Kline, who noted that while she focused

on choreography, Faller was more interested in performance. When they returned to Lancaster, they decided to start a dance company together, launching it at the end of June 2018. Emme Dance Collective is sponsored fiscally through Fractured Atlas in New York. Kline explained that a goal of the collective is to contribute to other local organizations. “Another focal point is trying to get involved (to give) back to the community,” she said. “We aren’t just a performance group. We want to use our talents to give back.” On Feb. 2, the pair performed in Be the Change, an event that benefited S. June Smith Center. In addition to the taking part in the performance, Faller and Kline held two master dance classes in December and donated all the proceeds Be the Change. Tickets, which are necessary to attend the show, may be purchased at www.emmedance collective.com. Tickets should also be available at the door.
